Best way to spec a new Linux server from existing Windows 2003 server?

We are looking to upgrade our servers to 11.1.2 and I am looking for some documentation/suggestions on the best way to spec the new box on a Linux platform.
I do have the current documentation from ORACLE with regard to "Estimating Disk and Memory Requirements" but am looking for some processor suggestions as well..
Any thoughts or ideas would be welcomed.
Especially helpful would be anyone who is currently running in a Linux environment any pitfalls or issues you've been having with hardware or software.
Thanks in advance.
Adam,

I don't think it is possible to recommend you any hardware setup without knowing your environment, budget and expertise.
If you plan to install Enterprise Linux, like Oracle Linux, you should look into getting server hardware and not a desktop system. You may also want think about using Oracle VM virtualization products.
Are you looking for rackmount or blade systems? it might be possible to limit your hardware decision between HP, Dell and IBM. I would personally prefer HP, but that's a matter of experience.
You should probably find out your OS requirements. E-business products and installation instructions are usually designed for the OS version that existed at that time. If you install a newer version of the OS you may run into configuration or backward compatibility issues that may require to install additional software. You should check your OS requirements first before purchasing any hardware. The newest hardware may not support older versions of the OS.
The HP support side shows a Linux certification matrix at: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/linux/hplinuxcert.html which might be helpful should you decide to get HP equipment.
You might also want to check your current Oracle licensing if you upgrade to a faster or more CPU's.

We have Crystal Reports Server 2008 installed on Windows 2003 Server. Pretty standard install.
On the same Windows 2003 Server, we have IIS setup to host some other sites (data.mycompany.com, intranet.mycompany.com). Now since Crystal Reports Server 2008 is running through Apache Tomcat 5.5.20 that is installed with Crystal Reports Server 2008. I need to setup something like reports.mycompany.com for reporting server. Since it is not in IIS and it does not seem that this install of Tomcat allows you to set this up to point to reports.mycompany.com. I need some feedback on how to set this up.

    Hello Shannon,
I recommend to post this query to the [BusinessObjects Enterprise Administration|BI Platform; forum.
This forum is dedicated to topics related to administration and configuration of BusinessObjects Enterprise, BusinessObjects Edge, and Crystal Reports Server.
It is monitored by qualified technicians and you will get a faster response there.
Also, all BOE Administration queries remain in one place and thus can be easily searched in one place.

  • Server invontory of Windows 2003 serve

    Hello,
We have installed the ZFS invenrory agents on several Windows 2000 servers
    and 2 Windows 2003 servers.
The Windows 2000 servers invontory just fine. The Windows 2003 serves do
    not inventory at all.
The remote control on both 2000 and 2003 work just fine.
I think it may have something to do with the security enhacements in Windows
2003, but I;m not sure where to start.
I have attached a screen shot of the ZFS server screen in hopes it might
help. The IP address listed in one on the Windows 2003 servers in question.

  • How to completely remove an Exchange 5.5 Server from a Windows 2003 domain?

I have recently inherited an environment that had a legacy Exchange 5.5 server in it.    I have migrated all mailboxes over to Office365, so there is no need for the Exchange Server anymore, but I don't have the Exchange 5.5 install media
to perform the uninstall from the domain.
Is there a way to manually remove the Exchange Server off the domain, and remove all its AD objects?

I just realized that this Exchange 5.5 Server is running on Windows 2000 Server, with an Active Directory Connector installed tying it to a single Windows 2003 Standard Active Directory Server.   Therefore the Exchange Server shows up in Sites
and Services as an AD server within my single site and forest.   This is also keeping my AD forest level at a Windows 2000 level, rather than at Windows 2003 native.
If I simply uninstall the ADC from the Windows 2000 Server running Exchange 5.5, will that remove the server from the Sites and Services and allow me to promote the Forest Functional Level to Windows 2003, so that I can then migrate the entire AD domain
up to 2012 functional levels in the near future?

  • Oracle 10g Universe Connectivity From 64bit Windows 2003 Server

    Hi,
Have an existing BO XI 3.1 environment built on a 64 bit Windows 2003 server and
I'm having problems getting it to communicate with Oracle 10g universes.  Works fine
with its SQL Server 2005 repository and SQL Server 2005 relational/olap universes, but
cant seem to get it to work with Oracle.
Universes work fine on the 32 bit development environment talking to the same Oracle
database, but when move them to 64 bit testing environment they all fail with
    Oracle ora-12154 errors.
32 bit Oracle client is installed and can communicate fine with other products using ODBC
connections from the server - but BO refuses to communicate.
Any ideas other than reinstalling BO under 'Program Files' rather than 'Program Files (x86)'
as I've seen some references on the web about this possibly being a problem?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Oracle 32 bit and 64 bit connectivity work fine from the server.  The problem seems to
relate to bug 3807408 in Oracle 10g that cant handle parentheses in directory names.
So BO being installed in u2018C:\Program Files (x86)\Business Objectsu2019 causes it to get
    rather annoyed.
SAP Note 1202730 does cover this, but our DBA's aren't too keen on installing the
suggested patch.  I'm also not very keen on reinstalling BO in a different directory as
we've got working production sites that would have to be rebuilt.
So now investigating whether using the Oracle 11g client will resolve this.
MSDN forum topic http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/sqlintegrationservices/thread/ab662d63-6385-4f73-b27f-d526048f601f/  gives a pretty good overview of what people have been trying to resolve this.

  • Best way to Migrate to new RAZR MAXX from DX ?

I'll soon be upgrading from my Droid X to a Razr Maxx and was wondering the easiest method to move to the new phone so that ALL of my APPs migrate after activation.  e.g., After doing the *228 option 1  and logging into my GMAIL account, will all the APPS automatically get downloaded? Or should I use an APP like "AppList Backup" - it's RESTORE function.  How did you peeps do this when you switched phones?
    thanks in advance

When are you getting your new phone Cody: when you get an this is what i done when i took my out of the box i charged it first thing didn't even turn it on once it finished.  I then cut very carefully on the edges of the Sim Card with my X-Acto with No.11 blade then grabbed it by it's edges an it's had to do this Cody but i did an then i installed as it shows gold side Up Now pushing that little Turkey was a little hard for me an i did not have a Sim Card push Tool so I made One i used a Toothpick i Cut it to Ware it had a Blunt Face an by doing that Cody i was Able to push the Sim in all the Way. Cody Right before you turn it Do a Factory Reset on your X to take out all the stuff that will soon be on your Maxx then shut it Down that's the way i done on mine..
Now your can Power up your Maxx
Now when you Turn it ON you won't have to do a *228   Any longer as the phone programs it self Via the Sim Card.  An flowing thru the Instructions is basically like it was when you programed you X. If your contacts are saved thru Google like mine is as soon as enter your Account or Accounts those contacts an you Paid Apps will be on your Razr!  mine was on the my Maxx in just a few Seconds an No hang up at all.

  • IPod Shuffle (2nd Generation) Windows 2003 Server

    Hey All,
Having a hard time getting my iPod to sync. Getting this error. "The iPod cannot be synced. An unknown error occured (-48).
I have been researching these forums on a solution and its directing me to update the iTunes BUT, the latest version of iTunes
is not supported on my Windows 2003 Server.
Also, Tried to do a restore and hitting a deasd end there also, "The iPod software update server could not be contacted".
I guess at this point I am confused as to whether the problem is with my ITunes or iPod.
Yes I have an internet connection that works and have dis-abled the anti-virus.
Where do I go from here?
    Confused.
    Nate

Did this previously work (with this shuffle and computer), and it's not working now for some reason?  Or is this the first time you are trying to use this shuffle with this computer?
I ask because, according to the 2nd gen shuffle specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP27
Windows 2003 Server is not a supported version of Windows (unless it is considered "later" than Windows XP).  If that shuffle worked previously with the same OS, I guess it is supported...  Also, is the version of iTunes "7.4 or later" and does the PC have USB 2.0 (not 1.1) ports.
Tried to do a restore and hitting a deasd end there also, "The iPod software update server could not be contacted".
That seems to come up occasionally.  When you do a Restore, iTunes checks with a server at Apple over the Internet to get the latest version of software for the iPod.  Possible causes are (1) that server at Apple being unavailable at that moment, (2) a problem with your ISP Internet connection at that moment, or (3) a problem with your computer's Intenet connect at that moment.  To comfirm it's not (2) or (3), I would restart your computer and check some other apps that use the Internet (like a web browser or email app) to make sure everything it working properly.  Then, immediately try doing a Restore again.

  • Running Windows 2003 Server on Xserve Intel with BootCamp?

    Well...
This sounds like awfully bad idea, but one of our clients needs to run Windows 2003 Server for a certain project in their organisation. Fundings for the new hardware is available. Windows-compatible hardware!
The idea here is to get fundings for a new Xserve, run it with Windows 2003 Server in the project and then keep the delicious hardware for free when the project ends. A PC-server would be thrown out of a window in this 100% Mac-centric department.
Windows 2003 Server runs smoothly on a MacPro with Boot Camp and Parallels Desktop. What about the XServe Intel?

    Schuckert-
    Greetings.
Are you in a position to test the configuration for a while? If so then I vote do it. If not, you could buy a copy of OSX Server and install it on a Mac Pro and try running your software on the XServe platform.
However, depending on your relationship with this client, I would have them sign a release based upon the beta-ness of the software.
A lot of us here are not in a position to give such things a try-just yet. Too busy trying to make things transition smoothly on the accepted configurations.
Although I will say that I suppose a client will eventually pose the question to me (:>)

  • Microsoft windows 2003 server installation

    Hi All,
i have nearly 30 x6250 blade servers on 6000 chassie.
i am using external CD/DVD drive to install Microsoft OS mannually into servers.
is there any way to deploy the server image to all other blades?
or can i automate the OS installation ...?
    thanks in advance.

the only way i know is to set up a primary windows 2003 server and install the other blade with the windows remote installation services...look at microsoft man-pages...if you have loaded your image into your windows server and add an automated installation then you can boot the machines to install and let them boot from pxe the installation and install windows automatically.

  • New files and folders on a Linux client mounting a Windows 2012 Server for NFS share do not inherit Owner and Group when SetGID bit set

    Problem statement
When I mount a Windows NFS service file share using UUUA and set the Owner and Group, and set the SetGID bit on the parent folder in a hierarchy. New Files and folders inside and underneath the parent folder do not inherit the Owner and Group permissions
    of the parent.
I am given to understand from this Microsoft KnowledgeBase article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951716/en-gb) the problem is due to the Windows implmentation of NFS Services not supporting the Solaris SystemV or BSD grpid "Semantics"
However the article says the same functionality can acheived by using ACE Inheritance in conjunction with changing the Registry setting for "KeepInheritance" to enable Inheritance propagation of the Permissions by the Windows NFS Services.
    1. The Precise location of the "KeepInheritance" DWORD key appears to have "moved" in  Windows Server 2012 from a Services path to a Software path, is this documented somewhere? And after enabling it, (or creating it in the previous
location) the feature seems non-functional. Is there a method to file a Bug with Microsoft for this Feature?
    2. All of the references on demonstrating how to set an ACE to achieve the same result "currently" either lead to broken links on Microsoft technical websites, or are not explicit they are vague or circumreferential. There are no plain Examples.
    Can an Example be provided?
    3. Is UUUA compatible with the method of setting ACE to acheive this result, or must the Linux client mount be "Mapped" using an Authentication source. And could that be with the new Flat File passwd and group files in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
and is there an Example available.
    Scenario:
    Windows Server 2012 Standard
    File Server (Role)
+- Server for NFS (Role) << -- installed
    General --
    Folder path: F:\Shares\raid-6-array
    Remote path: fs4:/raid-6-array
    Protocol: NFS
    Authentication --
    No server authentication
    +- No server authentication (AUTH_SYS)
    ++- Enable unmapped user access
+++- Allow unmapped user access by UID/GID
    Share Permissions --
    Name: linux_nfs_client.host.edu
    Permissions: Read/Write
    Root Access: Allowed
    Encoding: ANSI
    NTFS Permissions --
    Type: Allow
    Principal: BUILTIN\Administrators
    Access: Full Control
    Applies to: This folder only
    Type: Allow
    Principal: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
    Access: Full Control
    Applies to: This folder only
    -- John Willis, Facebook: John-Willis, Skype: john.willis7416

I'm making some "major" progress on this problem.
    1. Apparently the "semantics" issue to honor SGID or grpid in NFS on the server side or the client side has been debated for some time. It also existed as of 2009 between Solaris nfs server and Linux nfs clients. The Linux community defaulted to declaring
it a "Server" side issue to avoid "Race" conditions between simultaneous access users and the local file system daemons. The client would have to "check" for the SGID and reformulate its CREATE request to specify the Secondary group it would have to "notice"
by which time it could have changed on the server. SUN declined to fix it.. even though there were reports it did not behave the same between nfs3 vs nfs4 daemons.. which might be because nfs4 servers have local ACL or ACE entries to process.. and a new local/nfs
"inheritance" scheme to worry about honoring.. that could place it in conflict with remote access.. and push the responsibility "outwards" to the nfs client.. introducing a race condition, necessitating "locking" semantics.
This article covers that discovery and no resolution - http://thr3ads.net/zfs-discuss/2009/10/569334-CR6894234-improved-sgid-directory-compatibility-with-non-Solaris-NFS-clients
    2. A much Older Microsoft Knowledge Based article had explicit examples of using Windows ACEs and Inheritance to "mitigate" the issue.. basically the nfs client "cannot" update an ACE to make it "Inheritable" [-but-] a Windows side Admin or Windows User
[-can-] update or promote an existing ACE to "Inheritable"
Here are the pertinent statements -
"In Windows Services for UNIX 2.3, you can use the KeepInheritance registry value to set inheritable ACEs and to make sure that these ACEs apply to newly created files and folders on NFS shares."
"Note About the Permissions That Are Set by NFS Clients
The KeepInheritance option only applies ACEs that have inheritance enabled. Any permissions that are set by an NFS client will
only apply to that file or folder, so the resulting ACEs created by an NFS client will
    not have inheritance set."
    "So
If you want a folder's permissions to be inherited to new subfolders and files, you must set its permissions from the Windows NFS server because the permissions that are set by NFS clients only apply to the folder itself."
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321049
    3. I have set up a Windows 2008r2 NFS server and mounted it with a Redhat Enteprise Linux 5 release 10 x86_64 server [Oct 31, 2013] and so far this does appear to be the case.
    4. In order to mount and then switch user to a non-root user to create subdirectories and files, I had to mount the NFS share (after enabling Anonymous AUTH_SYS mapping) this is not a good thing, but it was because I have been using UUUA - Unmapped Unix
User Access Mapping, which makes no attempt to "map" a Unix UID/GID set by the NFS client to a Windows User account.
To verify the Inheritance of additional ACEs on new subdirectories and files created by a non-root Unix user, on the Windows NFS server I used the right click properties, security tab context menu, then Advanced to list all the ACEs and looked at the far
Column reflecting if it applied to [This folder only, or This folder and Subdirectories, or This folder and subdirectories and files]
    5. All new Subdirectories and files createdby the non-root user had a [Non-Inheritance] ACE created for them.
    6. I turned a [Non-Inheritance] ACE into an [Inheritance] ACE by selecting it then clicking [Edit] and using the Drop down to select [This folder, subdirs and files] then I went back to the NFS client and created more subdirs and files. Then back to the
Windows NFS server and checked the new subdirs and folders and they did Inherit the Windows NFS server ACE! - However the UID/GID of the subdirs and folders remained unchanged, they did not reflect the new "Effective" ownership or group membership.
    7. I "believe" because I was using UUUA and working "behind" the UID/GID presentation layer for the NFS client, it did not update that presentation layer. It might do that "if" I were using a Mapping mechanism and mapped UID/GID to Windows User SIDs and
Group SIDs. Windows 2008r2 no longer has a "simple" Mapping server, it does not accept flat text files and requires a Schema extension to Active Directory just to MAP a windows account to a UID/GID.. a lot of overhead. Windows Server 2012 accepts flat text
files like /etc/passwd and /etc/group to perform this function and is next on my list of things to see if that will update the UID/GID based on the Windows ACE entries. Since the Local ACE take precedence "over" Inherited ACEs there could be a problem. The
Inheritance appears to be intended [only] to retain Administrative rights over user created subdirs and files by adding an additional ACE at the time of creation.
    8. I did verify from the NFS client side in Linux that "Even though" the UID/GID seem to reflect the local non-root user should not have the ability to traverse or create new files, the "phantom" NFS Server ACEs are in place and do permit the function..
reconciling the "view" with "reality" appears problematic, unless the User Mapping will update "effective" rights and ownership in the "view"

Because the new iPhone will most likely have 4 g data will I loose the unlimited plan?
