Best way to switch to new laptop?

Hi all. I have a 2 year old MacBook Pro that I'm experiencing a lot of lag with (iTunes stuttering, mouse delays, etc.). I've spent a fair amount of time troubleshooting and haven't come up with anything that has helped. I'm about due for a new laptop anyway and with the release of the new MacBooks I figure it's probably time to pull the trigger.
I've spent a good deal of time configuring my system and setting up Quicksilver and everything. I'd prefer to not have to do that all over again. I have a Time Machine backup and would like to use that, if possible, to move everything over to the new machine.
Given the issue with the lag, part of me thinks a clean operating system install would be best. However, unless I'm missing something, I think that would mean having to go in and install all my apps, re-config prefs, etc. I really want to avoid that.
My thought was to try to just move everything over from the Time Machine backup and see if the new hardware fixes things. Then if not, either spend more time trying to fix the issue or do a clean reinstall and bite the bullet on reconfiguring everything.
Does that sound like the best way to proceed?
P.S. Is it as easy as it seems like it might be to move all data, apps, prefs from one machine to another using Time Machine or is it more complicated?

The best way is to use Migration Assistant. When you start up your new machine you will be asked whether you want to migrate data from another machine. This involves connecting them by Firewire cable and starting the source machine in FireWire Target Disk Mode. (New updates may allow doing this via USB, but I don't know how this works).
You should do this before setting up any user accounts on the new Mac, and should choose to import the user(s) from the old one. You can choose whether to bring applications over: if it's the same version of Leopard this would probably be OK, but many people feel it's better to reinstall. In any event it won't over-write the included Apple applications such as Safari.
When you have done this you will find your Home Folder there intact, and registered programs will still be registered (unless the registration depends on the particular computer); all your data will be there, including bookmarks and contacts etc.

What is the best way to connect my new MBP to a computer monitor?  DVI, VGA or HDMI?  Thanks

I recommend the Apple MiniDisplay Port to DVI adaptor.  I would avoid VGA.  MiniDisplay Port to HDMI will work as well (3rd party).

  • Best way to start a new catalog for 2009 ?

    Hi,
What's the best way to start a new catalog for the new year, with all the keywords and all the presets of the modules (without having to export all the folders) of previous catalog 2008 ?
    Thanks,
    Dominique

Well there is a cost too in not being able to find all your images in a single step, and inconsistencies soon develop - eg a keyword is plural in one catalogue, singular in another. Speed or stability issues are not simply related to catalogue size, and I've seen decently-performing catalogues 50% bigger than yours (as well as slow ones of a few hundred images). Have you optimized the catalogue recently?
But if you think it's a good idea to fragment control of your picture collection.... Presets will be carried over to a new catalogue as they belong to the machine (unless you have the save with catalogue preference turned on). Keywords can be moved via the Metadata > Export and Import Keywords command. If you have lots of collections and smart collections, then maybe make a copy of your existing catalogue and then remove all the items from it - making sure you don't trash them of course.

  • Best way to add a new section in the middle of a tune?

    hi,
what's best way to add a new section in the middle of a tune? I think I came up with an interesting transition to a tune... what's the best way to try it out?
please be specific. if it's just select all and cut and move - I already know that one. somehow, I bet there's a better way.
    thanks in advance...

You should be able to enter the "in" and out" points in the transport bar. And then under the Region menu, choose "Cut/Insert time."
So if, for instance, you go up to bar 32, and want to add 8 bars, enter 32 1 1 1 in the top transport place, and 40 1 1 1 in the second. Then select "Cut/Insert Time", and an 8 bar whole will be added to your song.
Be aware that if there are overlapping MIDI notes found at that cut point, Logic will warn you about it, and give you some options. In this case, I think "Keep" would be what you'd want, but every situation is different...
    Hope that helps....

  • What is the best way to switch off Daylight Saving Time?

What is the best way to switch off Daylight Saving Time for a DST enabled timezone?

I've been looking through the related classes and can't seem to find a way to disable DST in any timezone. Probably because they couldn't think of a good reason to want to know what the non-DST time was during DST.
However, you could easily compute the time without DST if that's what you need.

  • Best way to spec a new Linux server from existing Windows 2003 server?

We are looking to upgrade our servers to 11.1.2 and I am looking for some documentation/suggestions on the best way to spec the new box on a Linux platform.
I do have the current documentation from ORACLE with regard to "Estimating Disk and Memory Requirements" but am looking for some processor suggestions as well..
Any thoughts or ideas would be welcomed.
Especially helpful would be anyone who is currently running in a Linux environment any pitfalls or issues you've been having with hardware or software.
    Thanks in advance.
    Adam,

I don't think it is possible to recommend you any hardware setup without knowing your environment, budget and expertise.
If you plan to install Enterprise Linux, like Oracle Linux, you should look into getting server hardware and not a desktop system. You may also want think about using Oracle VM virtualization products.
Are you looking for rackmount or blade systems? it might be possible to limit your hardware decision between HP, Dell and IBM. I would personally prefer HP, but that's a matter of experience.
You should probably find out your OS requirements. E-business products and installation instructions are usually designed for the OS version that existed at that time. If you install a newer version of the OS you may run into configuration or backward compatibility issues that may require to install additional software. You should check your OS requirements first before purchasing any hardware. The newest hardware may not support older versions of the OS.
The HP support side shows a Linux certification matrix at: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/linux/hplinuxcert.html which might be helpful should you decide to get HP equipment.
You might also want to check your current Oracle licensing if you upgrade to a faster or more CPU's.

  • Best way to install a new hard drive into a laptop?

what's the proper way to install a new hard drive into a laptop? i've heard that cloning can result in very slow boot up and shut down times, and that the proper method is install the new hard drive, install OSX, and restore data from time machine. comments? thanks very much

Cloning doesn't cause the resulting system to slow down in and of itself, but it does retain any previous problems, which can build up over time and result in poor performance. (The same can be said of installing new system versions on top of old versions.)
A clean OS X installation will give you a clean base to start from. Mass-restoring data and applications will undo some of that benefit, but by no means all.

  • What's the best way to set up new imac for logic etc?

    In brief:
Getting new imac (27", 3.4 i7, 8-16GB ram, 1TB HD). Will be using it mainly to run Logic Studio (loads of plugins) and Final Cut Express. I also have 2 external Hard drives one 500G one 1TB.
The last imac I bought was my first and just went ahead and threw everything at it not really knowing where things should go. This time I want to set things up correctly.
Basically, with what I've got, what is the best way to set things up. I.e where do I put logic files, samples, BFD2, Amplitube etc. Where do I put videos for use in FCE. Storing projects and backups for use with Time Machine.
Also noticed the new imac will only have 1 firewire port. I will need to plug in the Hard drives (daisy chained), camera and RME Fireface 800. Was thinking of getting a Thunderbolt Hard drive but they are expensive and hard to find.
Would really appreciate any help before I get the new machine and start messing things up again.
    Thanks.

Adding to babowa, enable the system firewall in System Preferences>Security>Firewall tab. Click Advanced and check Stealth Mode.
Lion is a pretty steady and secure operating system, and as there really aren't MANY Mac viruses, there ARE viruses out there still. OS X is pretty good about letting you know if you do accidently download a virus, and it will help you throw it away if it detects one, such as the MACDefender virus. OS X has built in security features such as sandboxing that doesn't allow viruses in as easily as a Windows PC. As for hackers, as long as you have the firewall enabled and a secure password (for your computer and email accounts), then you should be fine.
It's the user that lets the virus in, not the computer (unless there's some untold serious vulnerability in OS X, which is highly unlikely). Keep your apps up to date, don't download pirated software, and be street smart on the internet. Don't download things or visit websites that you don't think are real. Safari includes a Phishing feature that automatically detects known phishing sites, protecting you from that big problem. Keep your passwords secure and you should be fine.
There are antivirus solutions out there, one notable one available in the AppStore is Intego's VirusBarrier (free and plus versions), if you feel you still need one.
I wouldn't worry about it. Windows users who switch to Mac are always asking these questions.
Here's some good reading as well

  • What is best way to move pictures from laptop to EHD pse10

I have gotten differing views on the best way to move my pictures from my laptop (to free up space) to an EHD while keeping PSE10 on my computer.  When I want to do something in PSE10 I would connect my EHD.
It has been suggested to follow the pse10 "back up" procedure but there are no directions on how to get the program to read the EHD after the back up is made (so pse10 can find my pictures on the EHD).
It has been suggested to do a "drag and drop" procedure but I have not been able to get step by step directions for this for pse10.
Can someone please assist me in this task with good directions.  I am marginally literate in these things, probably enough to make a big mess if I tried this without consult.
If no one can answer this is there a next level that one can go to?
I have tried chat with Adobe help and they won't help me because I do not have the newest version of pse.

    One more thing...
I have a MacBook pro that I'm using to connect to the thunderbolt drives. I believe I should be able to just connect my pc to the Mac via an Ethernet cable and network them, yes? Well, I tried that and could not get it to work. My pc never saw the new network.
You see, part of the problem actually has nothing to do with the transfer process at all. The movie comes with 12tb of footage files. That's ALL the footage shot during their 18 day schedule. However, only certain shots, about 4tb worth, made it into the final cut of the film, and the editor did not separate those shots out for me. So now, I am responsible for manually sifting through all the footage and copying over just the shots that made the final cut. I have a list of the shots needed, and I have an exfat formatted 500gb usb2 drive that so far is performing as well as out can, but it's an incredibly slow process that is compounded by the slow, usb2, copy speeds I'm currently getting.
Would a network connection handling such large amounts of transfers be faster than usb 2?
And also, I tried a free pc utility that allows my pc to read and write to Mac drives, but the transfer speed was so slow that I abandoned that strategy. Would Paragon have faster speeds?

  • Suggestions on best way to switch b/t Analog and Digit

I Just finally got myself the Logitech 5450's Speaker which support analog and digital 5. but Im a bit of a novice when it comes to audio stuff and Im just realizing that as great as digital sound is for movies (which support it of course), that unless a games specifically supports Dolby or dts digital output (which most do not), Ive got to switch back to using an analog connection.
The two annoyances Im left with whenever I need to switch from analog to digital (or vice versa) is swap cable on the sound card (between a coax digital and the "Sub/Center channel" plug of the analog 3-set plug) and Ive got to change the output setting on my sound card to enable/disable the "Digital Output Only" setting.
Im wondering if anyone has any suggestions on the easiest way to manage these settings so that i can swap between these two modes as easily as possible.
    Thanks in advance!!

The best way is to use Migration Assistant. When you start up your new machine you will be asked whether you want to migrate data from another machine. This involves connecting them by Firewire cable and starting the source machine in FireWire Target Disk Mode. (New updates may allow doing this via USB, but I don't know how this works).

  • What is the best way to protect my new Macbook Pro?

I finally have a shinny new 13" Macbook Pro Rentina and I'm wondering what is the best way to protect it? I am considering either a hard case or a sleeve but which one is the best? This thing is worth more than my car and I can't afford for anything to happen to it! Hard case? Sleeve? Both?

Congratulations on your MBPR! I had the exact same question when I bought mine. I ended up using a hard case and a sleeve. For the case I went with the Kuzy Hard Case and an Incase Deluxe Sleeve. Using a sleeve and case is great and I feel like my Macbook is very well protected and I am no longer scared of breaking it with this setup! Best of luck!

  • Best Way To Set Up New HD on MacBook Pro ?

I am wondering what you feel is the best way to accomplish the following:
I am using a macbook pro with a 5400rpm HD that is just way to slow,
I bought a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB Solid State Hybrid
I need to have all my info and data transferred to my new drive, I am not sure how to do it as I only have one mac, there cant use the migration assistant program.
Will timemachine work if I restore from it (have never done that before)
I am looking for the quickest and most reliable method available.
    Thank you..

Yes. See #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
If you already have Time Machine backups, that will be quickest.
But if those are your only backups, I'd recommend also making a bootable clone, with DiskUtility, CCC, or SD, just in case.
It's rare, but on occasion a backup drive fails while restoring, and everything is lost.

  • Best way to migrate to new server?

We're moving from a G5 XSERVE with an old RAID to a new one with the Promise. Will all the permissions (we're bound to Active Directory) carry over without an issue or will we have to go through Workgroup Admin and re-do everything (which would take hours)? Just trying to find out the best way to do this migration with minimal headaches. The new server is already set up and running, bound to AD, etc. I'm just worried about the permissions being hosed.
What other issues should I be aware of? Is there an Apple document that covers migrating/upgrading XSERVES?

  • Best way to display archived news stories?

I'm using the content editor web part to display a news story and then at the bottom of the story I have a link to archived stories. That takes you to a custom list with the remaining stories, but the view is the title on the left and the body on the right.
I'd like to have that list display the title on the top  with a few lines of the story below it and have the remaining stories below that with the newest first.
Is a custom list the best way to do this? If so, how can I change the view so the title is on top of the story with just a couple of lines of the story displaying and remaining stories below that?

Oops, sorry. I am doing a copy/paste into the Content Editor web part. Then when I have a new story I'll copy that content into the custom list for the archive.
If I do content query for the archives. I'm just going to query the custom list?
Is there some way to have the "live" story write to the custom list automatically so I don't have to copy/paste it when a new story needs to be posted?
