Best way to take songs on playlist from external drive to main system drive

consolidate?

It will copy everything not in iTunes, into the into the iTunes folder into Artist/Album/ folders.
also will the library then reference the files on the drive rather than the previous location of external drive?
Yes.
Anything you had in iTunes before you consolidate will get copied into the iTunes music folder location shown in iTunes prefs -> Advanced and iTune swill use that folder for everything.
The files on the external will not be used by iTunes.

  • How do I transfer library and playlists from external drive to PC?

My old PC with iTunes died for good. Luckily library and playlists were save on and external hard drive. How do I transfer my library and playlists from that drive to another PC (Windows XP) and are the arrangement of tracks within the playlists included?

Correction to my last post (in bold): I'll try to explain what I did originally, not knowing everything that would be required to transfer, so you can better understand my situation. Just before my first computer died I saved my Music folder containing iTunes, Library, and Playlists folders to an external drive, so I no longer have programs, sub-folders or other information rooted in my first computer. I then downloaded iTunes to my second computer (Dell Vostro 1520, WindowsXP). I then dragged my Music folder from the external drive to iTunes 11.1.5.5 music tab and near as I can tell the library was transferred because in the Songs tab, the tracks are there in duplicate, one with the exclamation at the left and one that functions playback. (However, my total song number is doubled and that can be addressed later if it doesn't impede anything). In individual playlists each track within has a “not connected” mark. I have an extensive playlist catalogue so I would rather not have to reconnect them one by one. Can you think of a solution where I don't have to do that? Would you like more info? Aragorn

  • Best way to copy large VM files from one drive to another?

Hi all, I am wondering what the best and fastest way there is to copy a large VM file from one drive to another (external drive to internal drive). Should the .pvm folder (in my case with Parallels) be zipped first? The files I need to copy range from 50 to 70gb. thx for any insight! ps. Even Bombich admits it's difficult for CCC to do...not clear why, but it does slow a full clone down to a crawl. I also have Chronosync at my disposal, but suspect the same is true there as well. Cheers!

I don't think it matters much which way you do the job. I use Parallels to compress by drives on a regular basis. If you want to copy a dynamic VM, which can grow to just about any size as required, to another drive you will use about the same amount of time zipping the VM - transfering the VM - unzipping the VM, as you would just moving the VM.
I've moved my VM files to a second partition that does not get cloned to my bootable backup that I create with SuperDuper. I've excluded my entire VM folder from Time Machine and just make zipped backups for each system after any large Service Pack Updates from Microsoft, or any intricate program installations. These get copied to a second partition on my Time Machine drive manually.
My VM's sizes are kept under control by using common Documents-Movies-Music folders for the Mac and the VM's. My VM's do not have the data files the programs use, they are on my Mac and get backed up every hour with Time Machine.
Reinstalling a VM just means deleting the broken copy, unzipping my latest backup, and putting into the same folder that Parallels knows to use. The data files are always accessible, even if they were created after my latest VM backup.

  • Best way to Import Rebuilt iPhoto Library from External HD to iMac HD

I recently bought a new iMac and transferred the data from my old Mac to the new one. In doing so - I now want to move my entire iPhoto library from an external hard drive to the new iMac internal hard drive. What is the best way to do this?
I had to rebuild my library with iPhoto Library Manager; so all my photos now reside on the external HD in the Rebuilt Library package. I do want to keep all my events, folder, etc. in tact.
Do I just drag and drop the entire package contents? Or should I use the import function? What is recommended?

Will this help: see MacWorld's online article Possibilities for overcoming Finder Error -36 in OS X .

  • Best way to set up partitions on 250GB external drive

    Hi all,
I've decided to go with an Iomega eGo 250-GB FireWire portable drive to back up my iBook's hard disk (30 GB) plus to store my photos and maybe hold a bootable copy of OS9.
This is my first time using an external drive, so I don't really know how to go about setting things up.
What would be the best way to set up the partitions on the external drive?
    1) I know I should create a 30GB partition for the iBook backup, but what about for the remaining volume? Is it best to leave it as a single large 200GB partition, or split it into two 100GB chunks? Other than the clone of my iBook, I'll mainly be storing photos (at the moment no more than around 10-12GB).
    2) I don't yet have a huge iTunes collection, but if I later want to store iTunes music that doesn't fit on my internal drive, is it fine to put it in the same partition as the photos, or would it be preferable to create a separate partition?
    3) If I want to install OS9 on the drive, how much space should I allot to it? Would this enable me to run legacy apps on my iBook?
    4) Does it matter how I name the partitions (i.e. should the name for my iBook back-up be the same as the original volume or should it be different?)
    5) As I still don't know exactly what I need, If today I decide to create only 30GB partition to backup the iBook, can I later partition the remaining space without having to start all over again?
    6) Also, the drive came out of the box with Mac OS Extended format. Is this the best format or is there another that would be better?
    Thanks for any advice

The answer to both question is that it's completely up to you. Partitioning or not partitioning won't affect operation significantly.
    3) If I want to install OS9 on the drive, how much space should I allot to it? Would this enable me to run legacy apps on my iBook?
The iBook G4 can not boot from OS 9 so you would only be able to run OS 9 in the "classic" environment.
    4) Does it matter how I name the partitions (i.e. should the name for my iBook back-up be the same as the original volume or should it be different?)
    No

There are a few tools which promise the ability to change the partitioning without destroying the data on the drive. But you should never do this without making a backup of the data on the drive. Data loss can easily happen and in a big way.
    6) Also, the drive came out of the box with Mac OS Extended format. Is this the best format or is there another that would be better?
    That is the best format.

  • Best way to copy 200GB of photos from external hard drive?

I have come from a PC where my photos are arranged in top folders with numerous folders within them, ie Holiday folder then multiple other folders inside this such as Photos1folder inside sub folder -   Holiday inside holiday folder sub folders such as - California, England etc. When I copied the top folder over all the photos came out into the separate folders and now I have just hundreds of folders everywhere? How do I stop this from happening? I am thinking I am going to have to delete all the photos from the imac and reorganise my external hard drive? Help please

If you are using iPhoto try importing the photos.

  • ITunes library gone bad; best way to rebuild and keep playlists?

As I outlines several months ago, iTunes has been generating hundreds of nonsensical files that have the same name as my music/song files, but end in .jpg or .png or .html, etc. I described the problem here, but have gotten no responses: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1088949&tstart=0
At this point, I am searching for the best way to "start fresh" on a new external drive with hopes that the problem is coming from the external that I am now using, and I would like to know your suggestions. I have approx. 170GB of media files, mostly music, and hope that I can keep my playlists intact. I have a backup of all my media files that I have scoured clean of all the phantom .jpg and .png files, and a backup of my library and .xml files.
My best guess is to uninstall iTunes, reinstall iTunes, then drag the "clean" backup of all my media files on to iTunes (with "keep iTunes organized" and "copy files" preferences checked), then import the .xml and library files. Don't know if this will work or not, especially for preserving the playlists/organization I have created over the past few years to keep 170GB of music organized.
Do you have a better solution? Am I forgetting some crucial step?

    Another thought. Might this work?
    1. Backup my iPhone to my MacBook (instead of iCloud)
    2. Sync my iPhone with my new iTunes library (it would now be associated with the MacBook)
    3. Restore my iPhone from the backup in step 1 (would this re-associate my phone with the old computer, or would it stay with the MacBook?)
    4. Do the restore a second time (to put the apps back in their proper order/arrangement)
    5. Sync my iPhone with the music library on the MacBook
    6. Set up the iPhone to backup to iCloud again, as it was originally
I don't want to just try it and lose my data. Is this a viable option?

  • What is the best way to create a database schema from XML

What is the best way to create a database schema from XML?
i have  a complex XML file that I want to create a database from and consistently import new XML files of the same schema type. Currently I have started off by mapping the XSD into Excel and using Mysql for Excel to push into MySQL.
There must be a more .net microsoft solution for this but I cannot locate the topic and tools by searching. What are the best tools and way to manage this?
    Taking my C# further

    Hi Saythj,
When mentioning "a database schema from XML", do you mean the
XML Schema Collections? If that is what you mean, when trying to import XML files of the same schema type, you may take the below approach.
Create an XML Schema Collection basing on your complex XML, you can find
many generating tools online to do that.
Create a Table with the above created schema typed XML column as below.
CREATE TABLE youTable( Col1 int, Col2 xml (yourXMLSchemaCollection))
Load your XML files and try to insert the xml content into the table above from C# or some other approaches. The XMLs that can't pass the validation fail inserting into that table.
If you have any question, feel free to let me know.

  • Best way to handle Christmas music - Playlist or separate Library?

Anyone have a suggestion about the "best" way to handle Christmas music?
After reading the article below I'm tempted to create a new library for Christmas music... that way I can keep it on an external drive or even DVD.
    http://www.allthingsmarked.com/2006/09/13/howto-manage-multiple-libraries-in-itu nes-7/

My solution to this is to add the tag "Xmas" to the "Grouping" field of each Christmas song.
This little tag stays tucked away out of sight until Christmastime. Then, I create a new Smart Playlist where Grouping contains "Xmas." Voila.
The Grouping field can be useful for non-genre distinctions you want to add to your music, likesay "live" or "remix" or "cover."

  • Best way to create a conact list from the user profile properties

We have a customer looking for a phone book utility, starting with a table showing main user information and with some search options. We would like o base it on the user profile properties and not to create an indipendent studion record browser porlet.
What is best way to create a conact list from the user profile properties ?

I did something like this using search.  It can get messy, so you need to take care with it.
    * Identify the properties you want to make accessible to search (ex: name, etc.)
            - add them to the user property map
            - flag them as searchable
    * I broke down and used the native server API.  I'd still suggest this approach.
    * Write some simple code to do vcard export if you like
(my code is all in vb.net)
I really believe this is the "right" approach, but honestly, this was a bit painful and has been
messy for us given some other business issues.  (to my chagrin we have users with 2-letter last
    names...)
I have code you're welcome to poke at, but it's more or less slapped together and has various
different search methods commented out so you can see how I tinkered w/ the remote vs. server
    API.
If you'd like it mail me at [email protected] and I'll send you a zipped copy w/ a
readme.  I hope it may be useful to you as both a starting reference.

  • Best way to move/copy iTunes library from PC to Mac

    Hi,
What's the best way to get my iTunes library from my PC to my new Mac?
The two computers are both networked.
    Thanks.

    Greetings David:
I have just completed this task... It took many attempts to get the two computers talking (windows xp pro, and new Imac g5). When I finally got them to talk to each other, the file transfer was brutallly slow. I used the ether-net cable to connect the two machines directly. The system was not very stable and crashed continuously. I would get one or two songs transferred and then the mac would lock up and require a restart (command option esc), via force quit of finder. Relaunch would not work, and I had to shut the machine off with the on off switch each time.
Today I finally burned the tunes on 2 CDs and simply dumped them into the music file. The PC burns a full ( ~ 800 megs) in about 10 minutes. Mac can down load the CD in ~ 6 minutes. This adds up to less than 20 minutes. Using the direct connection (indicated 100 Mbts/sec on the PC) the process was pathetically slow (hours restarting and horsing around).
One of my goals was to get the machines talking to each other, having accomplished this, it think it is not a worthwhile effort.
    Best of luck to you,
    Mike

  • A function to play offline / downloaded songs and playlists from Spotify on Sonos is missing!

A function to play offline / downloaded songs and playlists from Spotify on Sonos is missing!
Since my internet connection is a bit shaky at home I need to use my downloaded content and playlists with Spotify!
However this functionallity is not available together with Sonos which is a really big problem.
I hope you plan to work together with Sonos to introduce this functionallity really soon.
Also this is already available with Google Play Music together with Sonos and it would really be a shame to leave Spotify just to solve this problem.

Would be great to have some way of getting offline play lists on Sonos for when my internet connection dies, and also to reduce the amount of data i download repetatitivly... i must have streamed the same songs hundreds and hundreds of times over the last few years playing spotify over sonos, massive waste of bandwidth and download capacity. Maybe we could point spotify to a network drive for spotify on sonos to use for storage of offline playlists.

  • Is there a way to export an iTunes playlist from a windows XP pc and import on an iMac?

I have a PC running Windows XP that I've had for many years. I just got an iMac and want to make that my main music source for syncing iPods, playing, music in the house, etc. I have a lot of playlists on the old PC that I want to move over to the iMac and I don't have to rebuild them all by hand. Is there a way to export the original playlists from the Windows PC and import them to the iMac since the file systems are different? Thanks.

The problem really is that one person has InDesign and the other has Photoshop.
The workflow is images from photoshop are placed in Photoshop.
Not the layout from InDesign is placed in photoshop.
That's how the software is designed to work.
What people are saying is that Photoshop cannot work this way in dealing with layouts, it's a nightmare and will give you terrible results and cost you time and effort when updating things in Photoshop, it has all the makings of a Final Destination movie, particularly in the area of the later sequels.
But let's not get hung up on those franchises.
If the person needs to edit an Indesign file and can't afford the full cost of InDesign then there are other workarounds:
    1. If it's just text
If all they are doing is updating text then you can use File>Export>Rich Text Format from a selection of text, this will make a Word version of the text that they can edit. You can then use File>Import and import the RTF that is edited.
    2. You can use InCopy
This is a viable solution for editors that need to see the text in the Layout Format, but it hasn't got all the bells and whistles of InDesign, but it works in tangent with InDesign, it's not as pricey as InDesign and it also allows you to lock out editors from editing certain parts or moving things within the layout. And it can update your InDesign file on the fly.
    3. You can use Rorohikos Story Tweaker
    http://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/2009/03/25/storytweakertextedits/
There are workarounds that you can find for people that don't have InDesign. It's just that the Photoshop workflow isn't a viable solution in any sense.
For example, I have my layouts proofed in PDF format, where the proofreader adds Comments to the PDF. It works for our workflow as I'm the one editing the only file in existence.
But to go from InDesign to Photoshop is a complete  waste of time and effort on everyone's part. There is no need to go that route, there's no reason, there's no point.

  • What is the best way to transfer my iphoto library from old imac to new imac. both have iphoto 9.2.1

What is the best way to transfer my iphoto library from current imac to my new imac.  Both imacs have iphoto 9.2.1
os on old imac is 10.6.8.   os on new imac is 10.7.2.   I want the albums  and events to stay intact.  I have 4500 photos and 79 videos. 14.9 gb. looking for some advice here. Thanks so much.

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Iphone 4s coming friday, what is the best way to get the notes content from iphone 4 to 4s without doing a restore? i want the new phone to be totally new but not sure how to get notes content across.

What is the best way to get the notes content from iphone 4 to 4s without doing a restore? i want the new phone to be totally new but not sure how to get notes content across. If I do a restore as I have when previously from one iphone to another it has shown (in settings, usage) the cumulative usage from previous phones so all the hours of calls on all previous iphones will be displayed even though its brand new. Anyone know how I can get my notes (from standard iphone notes app) to my new iphone 4s without restoring from previous iphone 4. Thanks for any help offered.

First, if you haven't updated to iTunes 10.5, please update now as you will need it for the iPhone 4S and iOS 5.
Once you're done installing iTunes 10.5, open it. Connect your iPhone to iTunes using the USB cable. Once your iPhone pops up right click on it. For example: an iPhone will appear and it will say "Ryan's iPhone."
Right click on it and select "Backup" from the dropdown menu. It will start backing up. This should backup your notes.
Please tell me if you have any problems with backing up.
Once you backup and get your iPhone 4S, you must follow these steps. If you don't follow these steps, you will not be able to get your notes on your new iPhone 4S.
Open up iTunes again then right click on your device (iPhone 4S). Once you do you will see a dropdown menu. It will say "Restore from Backup..." Select this and it'll ask for a backup, select it from the dropdown menu. For example "Ryan's iPhone - October 12, 2011." Pick that and it will restore to your backup. Do this when you get your iPhone 4S so you will not lose anything. Even though you're restoring, you're getting back, since you're getting the previous settings, notes, contacts, mail and other settings from your old iPhone. You'll still have Siri though! So, restore when you first get it. Also frequently backup your device, as it will be worth it. You can restore from a backup if something goes wrong or save your data for a future update.
Once you do that, you should have your notes on your new iPhone 4S and iOS 5.
Please tell me if you need any help.
I hoped I answered your questions and solved your problem!
