Best way to transport MacPro?

I'm going to be driving on the interstate highways for a couple of thousand miles carrying my MacPro 2 x 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. How would you suggest the computer be positioned for transport? Upright, like it is when in use, or laid flat on one side or the other? I'm gonna wrap it in heavy-duty bubble wrap. There's no room in the trunk for the original box with foam and all.
Thanks,
Greg

The only legitimate directional restrictions that I have ever seen here have to do with two issues:
Cooling while running, since warm air is subject to the "chimney effect". Don't try to RUN your Mac on its side.
An older drive that has been used most of its life in a particular orientation should continue to be run in that orientation -- putting very different stresses on a heavily used bearing may cause trouble.
The manufacturers all say you can run a drive pointing any which way, as long as you move enough air over it to keep it cool. Transporting it standing on its head is not an issue.

  • Best Way to Transport Area Menu

In this case its S000, main menu. I created a manual transport and included it (selecting freely by dev class) and saved the object entry directory for it in the transport. The Object List of request says "General storage structure: Definition of a structure".
My concern is I want to be sure everything is in this transport that is included on the area menu, texts, transactions, etc. I selected it at its object directory entry level so I am hoping I have everything included in the transport.
I also see a transport button directly in the toolbar in SE43N with S000 i the Area Menu field.
What is the best approach so that all elements are included on the transport?
                Thanks.

Another developer has added a sub report tree to one of the subnodes of this main tree in dev(transport A). We did not see it displayed in the main menu, so I inserted her changes (sub tree revision) into the main tree and they are now there(tansport B) (structure definition only).
    You mention below:
    Table Contents     R3TR     TABU     TMENU01
    Table Contents     R3TR     TABU     TMENU01R
    Table Contents     R3TR     TABU     TMENU01T
These are in her transport for the added sub report tree(transport A). All the other components of the main menu are already in the target system. So, if I am thinking correctly, the main menu's original objects for the main report tree(TMENU01 - TMENU01R - TMENU01T) do not have to be included (transport B)since they are existing in the target system. Only the new stuff must be transported. So she should send her transport first, then I should send mine?.....It would be great if you can confirm this for me.......Thank-You

  • Best way to remove dust from a MacPro

what is the best way to clean the inside of a Macpro. When I go inside to remove or update components there is considerable dust. In the past I have grounded my self and gently wipe some of the areas with a light cloth to remove dust. There are areas on the mother board I would like to clean off also would canned air be ok.
    Thank you

My guess though is any thing that was loose or can be loosened (cable connection somewhere?) can be, would be the only thing to watch out for. Less on Mac Pro than on my PCs with fans and clips for power or an SATA cable that could slide off.
I don't know what mac model you have but DIMMs do have a tendency like any electronic part to attract and hold onto dust.
The old G5s were notorious for how much dust could build up down inside those systems and get empacked. And somehow still work but not as well.
If you see temperature sensors that don't look normal, or the fans seem to be working when you aren't doing anything, that would then be a reason to take action. Otherwise, not sure if more harm than needed good.

  • What's the best way to transfer just my photos from my MacPro(10.6.8) to my new 27inch retina display iMac

I have just purchased a new 27inch IMac and am cleaning out files etc from my MacBook Pro (circa 2010) with 10.6.8 OS. But the photos I want to keep in tact. Whats the best way to upload the photos onto the IMac - using time machine? or drag them over album by album?

I assume you have a home network. Connect both computers to your network. If possible do this using Ethernet for faster speed and better reliability. Configure your MBP for File Sharing. Use a copy program such as Carbon Copy Cloner 4.0.2 to transfer your entire folder of photos to your new machine.

  • Best way to re-install OSX for resale after hard drive wipe

Just got a new MacPro and having transferred everything from my early 2008, I have a buyer for that machine. I want to only give him OSX Mavericks and some legally transferrable applications. What is the best way to do this?

Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps mentioned in this support article, take these steps:
Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted.
If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
Erase the data partition(s) with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by booting into Internet Recovery (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer with the machine.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

  • Best way to activate WM in a storage location

    Hi all.
We want to activate warehouse management in a certain warehouse (0001) where stock is currently available.
What is the best way to make the begin using WM in this warehouse?
    We thought to:
    1. transfer all the stock (unrestricted/ quality/ blocked...) from 0001 into another warehouse
    2. transport all customizing related to WM for that warehouse (0001)
    3. create master data in the new warehouse number/ storage type
    4. transfer the stock into the warehouse 0001 again to include the storage bins
Is this flow correct or maybe is there any one better?
Apart from this, I had a question about how to manage storage type and storage sections?
We have clearly different areas in this warehouse:
    reception area
    production area with repetitive manufacturing
    storage for consumibles
storage for pallets (where have been previously produced in production area)
    storage for aftermarket
The mandatory requirement is to make goods receipt in a common area for all materials in this warehouse and, although there is no bin determination because operator will decide the bin to keep the material, he should know at least the type of material or the area where materials should be kept. For example, in reception area the operator is going to pick a consumible, he should know in which part of the warehouse it should be kept.
My idea is to create one storage type with different storage sections (one per *) but maybe it is better organized if different storage types are created. What is the best criteria to do it?
May thanks in advance and best regards.

  • Best way to add a new section in the middle of a tune?

    hi,
what's best way to add a new section in the middle of a tune? I think I came up with an interesting transition to a tune... what's the best way to try it out?
please be specific. if it's just select all and cut and move - I already know that one. somehow, I bet there's a better way.
    thanks in advance...

You should be able to enter the "in" and out" points in the transport bar. And then under the Region menu, choose "Cut/Insert time."
So if, for instance, you go up to bar 32, and want to add 8 bars, enter 32 1 1 1 in the top transport place, and 40 1 1 1 in the second. Then select "Cut/Insert Time", and an 8 bar whole will be added to your song.
Be aware that if there are overlapping MIDI notes found at that cut point, Logic will warn you about it, and give you some options. In this case, I think "Keep" would be what you'd want, but every situation is different...
    Hope that helps....

  • Version Management for classes ; Best way to restore a class and methods

I have a question about the best way to actually restore a class to its previous version.
There is a class that contains about 60 to 80 methods. Now the task it to revert the class back to some previous state.
The desired versions of the class are spread across several transport - so there is no single transport that holds all the right versions.
What is the best and easiest way to proceed from here?
Do we have to revert back each method individually? Or is there a better method?
The desired version are in a another system - having a transport complied in that system does not to seem an option here.
Any tip? Is there any aux. report etc. that might help out?
    Thanks for your input,
    C.N

Excellent answer - of which I was afraid of. Maybe I can press the matter and get them to initiate a transport of copies from the target system to the source system - which indeed would be the best solution.
But just imagine it is done - the well needed fix applied - what is the best way to revert back to the new version in the source system?
What would the transport of copies do to the transport history?
There seems to be just the manual way...or is it doable to store the current state of the class in a transport having it released but not imported into any other system?
After the fix is applied can that transport be imported back to restore the current version (for which the fix needs to be applied again of course...)
Thanks for you thoughts and input

    hi,
what will be the best process to create the request for the query.
1.go to rsa1-> transport connection -> select query -> select  BEx bus-> create the request, then change the query and save
                                                                                    OR
    2. change the query first and assign the request in the transport connection

    Hi,
You would get problems when you transport it by the second method, like the Variable might get missed out when you edit the query and save it to the request.
First method through Transport connection is the best way to do it, to make sure all the objects are collected.

  • Best way to do a 4:3 pan & scan in terms of resolution?

    Brethren,
I need to deliver a broadcast quality version of my project in 4:3 pan-and-scan. The project is made up of five 20 minute long pieces, usually holding about 1 or 2 layers of video, sometimes 3 or 4.
I've read a few other threads on this topic but I don't know that these solutions are ideal. Here are the possible methods I can imagine:
option a) apply a matte to each clip in the entire project
option b) change the overall settings of the project to ____?_____
option c) export the movie to a quicktime file and re-import it and then alter the settings
option d) take the entire timeline and "nest" it back into a new timeline and apply a single overall matte to that new nested timeline
    *MAIN QUESTION*
*Which method is the best way to whittle things down to 4:3 and yet preserve image quality? I'm concerned that some of these strategies present issues of resolution loss. I want to avoid as much loss as possible. Is there a good method that I may have missed on my list?*
    *SECONDARY QUESTION*
*Although I won't be "panning" too many clips, there will be a few clips that need to be scooted right or left. In such cases, what is the best method of "panning" while preserving image quality? (I think option "D" is unusable here because you can't pan individually if you've applied the matte to the whole enchilada.)*
    MY SPECS
--The project exclusively uses footage from the Sony EX-1, shot at 24p, true 16:9.
--I edited the project using the XDCAM 1080p 24 VBR 35mbs codec. But I exported it to QuickTime using the ProRes 422 (HQ) codec. The resultant exported QuickTime files are 25 gigs each, which is a bit too bulky for my system's 16gigs of RAM to re-import and re-tinker.
    thanks so much,
    Shanked

    A couple of things -
    • it makes no sense to go to ProResHQ with your source material. It is way overkill. ProRes standard would have been plenty and would have much more reasonable data rates
    • your work flow "bulky" problems have nothing to do with the RAM in the machine and everything to do with disk through put. If you are having hesitation issues, see the comment above re ProResHQ.
    • Why did you shoot 24p if you knew you were headed to broadcast?
I need to deliver a broadcast quality version of my project in 4:3 pan-and-scan.
What format/codec is the broadcaster requesting? Does it need to be delivered on tape?
These are the issues that your solution will need to address -
generating a broadcast 4:3 version, you'll need to:
    a) reduce the resolution to 720x486
    b) allow for some image location manipulation while cropping the sides
    c) add pull down to generate a 29.97 frame rate
If you didn't want to move the image around, the easiest way to do this would have been to simply drop the exported version of each segment of your project into Compressor and let Compressor do everything in one step and in a batch process. With the MacPro set up to run as a quick cluster, Qmaster will allow Compressor to access all cores of the machine and will speed the process along markedly.
Given the need to manipulate image position, you'll need an additional step before the files land in Compressor.
Create a duplicate sequence for each segment and, with the 4:3 ratio crop marks on the screen, manipulate the image locations as nec to maintain framing. Then export a reference version using current settings. (You could do this as a nest as well. I tend to stay away from nests as they can lead to other hard to trace down problems.)
Open up Compressor, bring in the manipulated files, apply the ProRes (standard quality) 720x486 preset, make sure frame controls are on better or best to smooth out the resizing and retiming. Frame controls gives you access to optical flow technology which will do a much better job than FCP alone can generate. Please note: You'll want to run some time vs quality tests. Frame controls set to "best" will dramatically increase rendering times.
Then launch the whole shebang as a batch process and let it run.
If you have something like a Kona 3 and you need to deliver on tape, the card will do the down conversion and add the pull down on the fly on playout to tape. This eliminates the whole Compressor step.
    Good luck.

  • Best way to put system and apps (home directory?) on new SSD?

I just installed a new 115 GB SSD in slot 2 of my MacPro (early 2008). I have not initialized yet.  I want to make that my Boot Drive.  I have Carbon Cloner and have cloned my entire old HD onto an external so far.  What is the best way to get my system and apps onto the SSD. I'm guessing Carbon Cloner will let me clone parts of my HD and not make me clone all of it but I don't yet know how to do that.  Do I just clone my apps folder and then my system folder one at a time?   What do I do with the Library? I cannot clone my entire HD onto the SSD first because it will not fit and I do not want my data on there anyway.  I have read that I should also put my home directory on the boot but this is now confusing me.  I plan on partioning the erased HD into fast and slow, then putting my User folder from the external back on there.  I am the only one using the computer so I do not have issues with Users and all my apps are in the main hard drive app folder but I have noticed that I have things in both my Library folders (main HD and my home).  Should I put all items in one of them, main or home? before I do this?  I never understood why I have items in both folders since I am the only user and all the apps are on main. Thanks.

    Dear Experts,
there was additional information introduced in R/3, with respect to a certain currency (this currecy got a second abbreviation, whereas the first abbreviation was set as the primary ISO code).
Can you please help me understand, what is the best way to get this additional information updated in SRM 7.0 (Classic)?
    - Do we replicate via the DNL_CUS_BASIS3 object?...and if yes, do we replicate from Development R/3 system to development SRM system and than transport it to SRM Quality and Production...or do we replicate level by level, i.e. from R/3 development to SRM development and than from R/3 Quality to SRM Quality and so on...
    OR
    - Do we update this change manually in SRM Development and than transport it to SRM Quality and Production?
    Thank you very much.

Please elabotate what additional information regarding currency you need to update.
As per std. SRM we may use "BBP_GET_CURRENCY" that will update currency details from ECC to SRM.
But always you may add on required fields as required using enhancements.

Most time you need to spend on the operation is copying files at OS level on storage. So it won't take days to copy the files unless your storage is terribly slow.
