What's the best way to upgrade iTunes? I have an older version right now and I want to upgrade to 9.2. Do I simply install 9.2 over the same directory as my 9.1.1? Do I lose the library and settings?

No, but as when installing or updating any application, you should make a backup.
You can backup the \Music\iTunes\ folder to keep everything (playlists, music. ratings, videos, etc.) that is important.

I'm currently running iTunes 8.0.2.20 to work with my iPod Touch 2G and Nano 4G. All is working quite well so I'm rather hesitant about upgrading. But more and more content is requiring an upgrade to the latest iTunes version. If I decide to take the leap, what is the best route for upgrading, ensuring that my music is not lost and that I can revert back to my current version if something goes wrong? It is a good idea to back up the library files, iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music library.xml before upgrading. It shouldn't be necessary but your never know... You may be glad of it if you want to downgrade.
If you want easy downgrading, save the last iTunes set up file if you have it, maybe rename it iTunesseteup8.exe so it isn't overwritten by the new installer.
It is safest not to upgrade from in iTunes.
Download the installer from the Apple site and save it on your PC, then run it from you PC.

I have read some people say the best way up upgrade to iOS 4 is to start fresh and set up as a new phone, then sync content back from iTunes. I have also heard other people say to do a backup of the phone, upgrade, then restore from backup.
So far today I've heard of LOTS of people having problems with the new OS, and some people say they need to set up the phone as new to avoid having problems. But then what about all your data like text messages, contacts, etc? I do not use MS Outlook at home so I don't really have anything to sync my contacts to, other than just doing the normal backup.

I updated itunes and then synced mine this morning (UK time) downloaded it as soon as it came out (6pm UK time) and I've not had a problem.

Best Way to Manage iTunes Match for Family?

So what's going to be the best way to handle iTunes Match with multiple iThing users in the family? I've got an iPhone (with an associated AppleID), my wife has an iPhone (with her own AppleID) and is getting an iPad for Christmas. The kids both have hand-me-down previous generation iPhones (currently set to Airplane mode for use as iPods, but perhaps with their own AppleIDs in the future).
All of our music (about 10,000 songs) is ripped and stored in iTunes, under my AppleID, but I'd like for all family members to be able to access the family's music collection. How am I supposed to handle this? Do I have to associate all of the iThings with my AppleID? If so, what are the other consequences of that going to be?

Mine is still uploading/matching; so far, I am able to see the song list with the little cloud icon indicating (I guess) that that song is available on Match. I can also see the same list on another computer running iTunes and logged into Match.
However, I can't figure out how to access the service from my iPhone. Never mind; just found the "Use iTunes Match" option in System Settings. Signed in, agreed to the "your music will be replaced" warning....and nothing happens. I'm going to assume for the time being that it's because my library isn't finished updating.

I cannot get itunes to work/install on myPC. I am running windows 8 in a 64 bit machine. I also want to purchase books via itunes for my Nook. Are you deliberately excluding PC owners so we cannot use ituens on our computers???? I have selected a community but have no idea what community I should be working with. Can somone explai these communities to me? Also. you don't allow much time to go thru the sign up process. I had to start over SEVERAL times as you kept timing me out. Jesus...when people are signing up for the first time, we have no idea of the questions that will be asked. Give us a break and give us time to sign up. Read the install guide - but do a full export first.
I remeber something about a new install overwriting a shell script that you should backup first. (It's in the manual.)
Beyond that, if you install to a NEW Oracle_home, you should be fine.

Apple is currently only making Lion available for download. You'll have to accquire a copy of Snow Leopard first and upgrade to it. Once you are on Snow Leopard, update your Mac with all of the current updates, which will then give you the App Store. From the App Store you'll be able to download and install Lion. I strongly advise backing up your system first prior to the update.

Best way to sync iTunes on 2 computers?

Can anyone suggest the best way to sync iTunes between 3 macs Mac Pro & 2 Macbook pros.
I edit and rate the music on the desktop so it's not as much about the mp3 files as much as it is not having to reinput the metadata 3x.
Also the iTunes folder on the desktop is on a secondary drive not the HOME folder.
When I DJ on Traktor it looks for the location of the mp3 files and if they are listed as being on another drive then it can't find them.
I used iTunes Ranger about 5 years ago and although it was slow it worked fairly well across 3 DESKTOPS but their website only lists up to Mac OSX 10.6.

You can also do this:
Launch the programs you know and love on your Snow Leopard Mac.
Utilities --> Activity Monitor
Under the "Kind" tab it will identify the programs running PowerPC, Intel and Intel 64.
No PowerPC apps will run under Lion.
Don't worry about Apple's system stuff like Mail, iCal, Safari.
Don't worry about the system processes, like fontd and launchd, those will be replaced if you go to Lion.
Just look for the programs that you need.

Best way to upgrade an old EDD

Hello All
I have a DITA EDD that dates back to FM7 and is therefore based on DITA 1.1 (or maybe DITA 1.0!). It allows creation of composite document made up of concepts,references, tasks, and topics, and also contains lots of formatting information and so on.
Now that I am using FrameMaker 11, I'm thinking about upgrading this EDD to accommodate the DITA 1.2 Technical Content structures. I've been doing some reading about DITA 1.2 DTDs and EDDs, and understand the modularity that is involved.
So my question is: What is the best way to upgrade this EDD so that the new structures are included, without losing my formatting information? Do I need to copy/paste format rules, etc. into a new EDD, or can I somehow import the DITA 1.2 structures into my old EDD? (Or does my question betray some basic ignorance on my part?)

I hate to say it .. but I don't think there's an "easy" way to do this. I think you'll have to individually copy/paste the context rules into the corresponding element definitions .. taking care to not break things. You'll notice that the general rules for some element definitions will have changed, which may affect the context rules.
Yes the DITA 1.2 apps with FM11 (and FM10) are largely modularized as text insets in a fashion similar to the way the DTDs are broken up. There's also separate apps for each topic type, rather then relying on ditabase to provide one app for all topic types. Conceptually, this makes good sense, but from a practical standpoint, it's really complicated to maintain. It also requires a system with loads of RAM to properly resolve these insets .. even then, it may take lots of time to manage. The idea behind the modularization is that you can update context rules for certain elements that are shared between the various apps .. although it's very possible that you want things to render differently in each topic type, which would require you to add more logic to the context rules to determine which topic type is in use.
Personally, for the DITA 1.2 apps that I'm developing, I'm going back to a single ditabase app for all topic types with no insets. It is much easier to manage and maintain. The drawback to this approach is that the context rules map differ for certain elements depending on the root topic type. This is specifically an issue with task and strictTask. For that I will need separate apps. Also, I'll need separate apps for the learning topic types. But I think that for the basic task, concept, reference, and topic .. they can happily live together in one app .. making maintenance much easier. For the separate apps, I'll just copy/paste the elements definitions rather than relying on insets.
The catch with all of this is when it comes time for book publishing, you'll need a single app that includes support for *all* of the topic types. Since it's possible that all of them may exist in a single chapter (assuming you're building merged chapter FM files rather than the nested chapter files, the FM default). The "Book" app doesn't need to be valid DITA so it's OK if the general rules allow more elements than they do in the authoring apps, so this is completely doable .. it just means that you have to maintain multiple apps.
I hope this is helpful .. it's not a simple task by any means. An alternative option is to just rely on the shipping apps for authoring, and focus on customizing the Book app for publishing.

Best way to upgrade an application?

Hi,
This is a newbie question.
We created, & tested a new application. Then exported it from the dev env. and imported into the production env. That all went smoothly and the app is working well.
The application id in production is different than in dev.
We have now made enhancements to the development copy and are ready to deploy those into the production env.
We will need to upgrade shared components and the application. The table upgrades are being handled outside APEX.
I can see where to create upgrade scripts, but I'm not sure what needs to go into them.
I've also seen in the forum where it looks like you can import over an existing application. The caveat with that seems to be that the application ids have to be the same.
Can someone direct me on the best way to upgrade our shared components and the application.

If you are using the Apache driven app server, I believ there would be a way to do that, if you are using the internal web server, I don't believe so...
(This might be a good time to coordinate the app ID's in development & production to cut down on these issues..)
