Best way to use Migration assistant?

Hi, will be setting up a new 24" soon and need some advice. Of course, I'll want to transfer data from my old machine, G3 600. Waht is the best way to go about this?
1. Is there some prep work I should do on my old mac first?
2. I've heard that is was not a good idea to copy apps(maybe other components, too) from the old machine to make sure the machine stays as clean as possible. Is this true?
3. If true, then I of course still want to transfer all my files, music, photos, etc. Does this mean I just choose to transfer my user file? What are the advantages of this?
4. What about internet, mail accounts and configurations. Are these transferred from the user account, or, where are these?
5. If I don't transfer apps, I'm assuming I then have to go back and make sure all the apps I want are there, and update all of them as well. In this case, do i drag and drop them?
Would appreciate any thoughts on the subject. Perhaps I should just transfer everything, although people have told me it's not the best method to keep our new machine as clean as possible. Hope this makes sense. Many thanks for your assistance and expertise in this area.

sorry,
but i dont remeber them, as i am pretty new to mac os myself :P
i would try, if u dont find any informations about it.
- connect both pcs using a firewire cable
- boot the new mac and continue until the question appears:
"use data from old mac ?"
- reboot the old mac, pressing T while booting to get into the firewire target mode
- continue on the new intel mac....
- the 4 categories should be shown
AFAIK: you can still abort there.
BUT:
take some time before, i bet you will find more detailed informations in this forum regarding those categories and migration itself
best regards

  • Best way to do Migration assistant?

Hey I will be migrating to the retinaMBP tomorrow.
From peoples experience is it better to do migration from the recently updated Time machine via USB 3 or Old mac (Lion) to new mac (Mountain lion) via ethernet?
I have seen that people have had problems with migration but it has never been clear why..........
If any pitfalls can be avoided that would be great!
    Thanks

And only way I have of connecting the old drive is by USB. Bet not.
Guess I'll just create a partition from unused space on the HD, clone the old HD over and Migrate from there.

  • Best way to transfer files without using migration assistant

upgrading from snow leopard to mavericks goes ok, but migrating files hangs with "less than a minute to go". What is the best way to transfer user files without using migration assistant?

I keep backups of essential documents in Dropbox, and then the files can sync when I reinstall Dropbox.
For larger collections of files, for example, my Documents folder, or iTunes or iPhoto libraries, I transfer them from a Time Machine Backup- just by going into the backup manually and restoring the folders.
If you have files that can fit on a flash drive, then you can use that, which is very fast.

  • What is the best method for moving to a new Retina MacBook Pro from an Early 2011 15-inch MacBook Pro using Migration Assistant?

I'd like to transfer all data to the new MacBook as seamless as possible. Don't want to reinstall software. Using Migration Assistant in past was successful, but I always used Firewire or Ethernet.
Apple's Thunderbolt cable is too expensive at $49. Wifi is way too slow. (Transfering my 500GBs was going to take over 100 hours.) Do I need to get a Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit Ethernet adapter and cable? That's about the same price as the Thunderbolt cable. Is transfer over USB 2 possible? Would I be better off restoring from my Carbon Copy Clone on my USB 2 external drive?
I do not use Time Machine.

Stephen Coles wrote:... Do I need to get a Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit Ethernet adapter and cable?
That's what I used, although I already had the ethernet cable. Just directly connected both machines (after turning off Airport on the old one), no router or anything else, and ran Migration Assistant on both ends. Transfered a user account with about 30Gb data, nothing else.

See this -> Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support
"If two user accounts have the same name
If your new Mac already has a user account with the same name as one you're trying to transfer, Migration Assistant lets you decide what to do. You can either replace the existing user on your new Mac, or give the user you're migrating a new account name.
Selecting the option to replace an existing user overwrites that user's Home folder on your new Mac. This can be convenient if you just set up your new Mac using the same account name and of your important data is still on your original Mac. Don't select the option to replace the existing user unless you're certain you don't have any important files stored in this user's Home folder on your new Mac."
I create an new account named Admin, then log into this account to run Migration Assistant.

  • What's best: restore using migration assistant or time machine back up?

    Hi,
here's the scoops, wondering what to do:
1-tech support at apple store did a clean install of os lion on my macbook.
2-I have a back up from time machine
3-I want to restore everything but applications
4-Problem is: "I think" it's better to use the back up rather than install one certain program (quickbooks) again
5-Should I just use migration assistant to restore everything after setting the computer as a new one; or restore using time machine, without the applications, and restore quickbooks from the back up by itself later on?
Sorry for the sillyness of this question..
    Thanks

  • Can I change the way that I connect my two computers using migration assistant whithout interrupting the process

I am in the process of using Migration Assistant to transfer my 2008 MacBook Pro to my MacBook Pro with Retina.  I am currently using USB to transfer and it is taking a long time (as expected).  I am trying to increase the speed of this process.  Am I able to connect ethernet to thunderbolt without stopping the process? Can I just plug in the cable and not have the hault the process, but speed it up? Thanks!!!

Since you're just sending data, it won't "mess" things up, but you "may" have some cleanup on your hands, depending on what's been transferred. If you want to stop: Command + Q on both machines.

  • HT4889 I have accidentally created another account when using Migration Assistant to a new MBA. How do I now 'migrate' all the files from both accounts into one to save myself having two accounts, both of which are me? Help?

I have accidentally created another account when using Migration Assistant to a new MBA. I have read that I probably should not have skipped migration in the initial set up and the problem would have been avoided but, alas, here I am. Does anyone know how I can 'migrate' all the files from one of the accounts that has been created to the other, so then I can delete it and have a single user on the computer seeing as I am the only person using it? I have read starting again, if this is the way to go, where is the best place to start 'starting again'?

Yes definitely should see it but its not coming up (I don't think) when I log out of 2nd user and into the main account. Opening finder in the 2nd account, I can obviously find the public folder because thats where I dropped all the files, but when in the main account, it can't be found. The only public folder that comes up is the folder for that account (main account) and it does not display files I'm looking for. Frustrating....
EDIT: Have found it through a round-about way but all music and photo and movie etc files have a red stop sign disallowing them from being transferred. Can you guess what the next question will be?

  • Has anyone used Migration Assistant to move services from one system running Server to a new system?

So, I've purchased a Mac mini to replace my aging Mid 2009 mini on which I've been running Mavericks Server.  In trying to answer the question of how best to move services from the old machine to the new, I've stumbled into the fact that Migration Assistant can apparently migrate not just user data for workstations and laptops, but also service data for servers.  The problem is there isn't much detail in the docs about how good a job it does when going from one machine to another without changing OS releases.  There's a very detailed document in the KB about going from older versions of Server to new (OS X Server: Upgrade and migration from Lion Server or Snow Leopard Server) and a general doc on migrating from another Mac under Mavericks (OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks) but that has no details about Server.
Has anyone used Migration Assistant to move services from one system running Server to a new system?  Are there any details that are particularly important to get right?  Are there things that require manual steps after Migration Assistant is done?
There are other ways I could tackle the problem, of course.  I could simply swap drives between the systems, but the new system has two drives that are bigger, faster, and I intend to mirror them.  That would complicate such an approach.  I'd really like to keep the conversation constrained to a discussion of Migration Assistant as the primary method.

yes. I migrated a server frm lion to mavericks following these notes a while back:
OS X Server: Upgrade and migration from Mountain Lion
i do not recall having any problems with it.

  • Problems using Migration Assistant from Tiger to Snow Leopard

I want to scavenge files and apps from a Power Mac G4 (PowerMac3,5) running Tiger 10.4.11 before I turn it out to pasture. Most of them were migrated years ago to another system and have been updated and upgraded over the years, but a few apps have no modern equivalent. Now I want to do one last "pull" to pick up anything left behind all those years ago, particularly apps for which the install discs are in deep storage at best and possibly discarded.
I'm trying to use Migration Assistant in a nearly virgin Snow Leopard 10.6.8 system (installed fresh from 10.6.3 retail optical disc, updated over the network, lightly tested). It has a single admin account, no other user accounts.
Possible complicating factors: the Snow Leopard system is Server running under Parallels 10.1.4 on Yosemite 10.10.2 on an Early 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro3,1) with  third-party USB3 controller in a PCI slot.
At present, I'm using a portable drive with both FW and USB interfaces as an intermediate storage (FW on the G4 to clone the system drive, USB on the Mac Pro to connect it to the virtual machine). SL sees the drive just fine, can copy files from it, and can even run apps from it. Migration Assistant sees the drive and offers to migrate from it.
    Two problems:
    1. No matter what user(s) I select for migration, Migration Assistant tells me it is a duplicate account. Proposing an account name never used before does not help. As a result, no user files can be migrated. (Obviously, I could copy them in other ways, but I think MA should do a more thorough job.)
    2. Migration Assistant offers to migrate absolutely no applications. Even applications that SL will run from the drive cannot be migrated. (Some are PPC apps, but SL will run them via Rosetta. Others are Universal apps.)
Am I expecting too much of Migration Assistant?
Is the Migration Assistant shipped with SL Server (and updated through Software Update) not capable of running under SL Server?
Should SL MA refuse to migrate any applications from a Power Mac, even Universal applications?
    Am I missing something obvious?
Is there key information I have omitted?

...It's not the twenty bucks, it's the principle of the thing.
Not sure what you meant by that statement.  Although this "principle" may be more important to you than the twenty bucks, I know that my time is worth more to me than your twenty bucks!
    What apps are you using?
    markwmsn wrote:
I was able to install Snow Leopard (client) in a partition, and it was able to migrate users and many applications from the G4 clone on the portable drive. Some of the apps even run.
Then I went back to my SL Server virtual machine and tried to migrate FROM the SL client partition. Migration Assistant showed the same symptoms as importing from the clone directly (no apps offered, bogus "dup user" errors). I am forced to conclude that either (a) Migration Assistant 3.0.4/1.1 is broken when run on SL Server or (b) my new SL Server installation is broken. I'm either going to have to boot back and forth to run the old apps or find their installation media and reinstall them in my SL Server virtual machine.
Even worse, I realized that one of the antique programs I still haven't dug everything out of is a Classic application that had to be kludged to survive Y2K!

With the newer Intel Macs, you have to run a Classic emulator such as SheepShaver, which requires you to extract the Mac ROMs from your older Classic Mac and then install Mac OS 9.
A related program is Chubby Bunny, which comes bundled with all of that included (google the term "Classic-On-Intel v 4.0.1 chubby bunny").

  • What to do AFTER using Migration Assistant??

So I used migration assistant to transfer from my old macbook to the one I got this past summer. To be clear, I used it twice, once to transfer the apps (about 2 months ago) and again to transfer everything else. Now this meant transferring the users so that the music and pictures would go with it (I hope that that was the best way to do that).
Now what do I do? When I transferred the apps they were there all nice and ready to be used. I want my old stuff blended in with my new stuff (pics and music all together from both computers) in itunes and iphoto, but that didn't happen. Also, most of the folders in the old user folder (including music, etc) have a little red symbol that won't let me access them.
    Please help! Thanks.

How do I set up a new Mac from an old one, its backups, or a PC?
But since you already did it, this Transferring files from one account to another might be better suited for you.
