Best way to video chat while I'm military-deployed?

I'm deploying soon for 7 months, but I'm going to an area where I'll have constant connectivity. I'd like to be able to video chat with my wife while I'm gone.
My MBP (coming with me), of course has an iSight built into it.
My wife has an iMac PowerPC G5 running Tiger. Unfortunately, she has the hardware version from just before when they modified it to include an iSight.
What's the best way to get her hooked up for video chat? I don't mind upgrading her to Leopard if necessary (and yes, her hardware can handle it), and I don't mind paying a REASONABLE amount of money for a webcam she can use. But buying a new computer is not an option, and unfortunately I know nothing about external cameras -- or if they can even be used with iChat.
Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated ASAP. I leave soon, and would like to get her hooked up before I go.

You're welcome, Dan.

... if I'm reading the system requirements correctly, we could only use a USB webcam if she's running Tiger 10.4.9 or Leopard; otherwise it must be Firewire, right?
Not so.
First: the "10.4.9 or later" includes Snow Leopard (10.6.x), too, but the requirement is for a specific subset of USB webcams that comply with UVC standards. Not all USB webcams are UVC webcams, although most currently-produced major brands are UVC.
Check the packaging, documentation, or technical specifications to be sure any USB webcam you buy offers UVC support. If you are buying a new USB webcam, I strongly suggest you buy the current (UVC) standards for maximum compatibility for future applications.
Second: you could use certain USB webcams (perhaps you already have one?) with this add-on software
  http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iusbcam/configs.html
plus any required additional driver software. Known USB camera compatibility is shown in that link.
However, neither the iUSBCam add-on software, which only helps iChat and does not work with Snow Leopard, nor the additional webcam drivers are unnecessary if you use 10.4.9 or later with a UVC webcam.
My suggestion: if you need to buy a camera for your G5 iMac, get a new UVC webcam that is compatible with your system and offers a manufacturers warranty.
I'm thinking it's time to upgrade her to Leopard anyway...I haven't done it anyway because I find it ludicrous and annoying that I have to pay full freight $129 to get her a Leopard upgrade when you can buy Snow Leopard for $29 (which, unfortunately, won't run on a G5 PPC, of course). At any rate, we can use a USB camera only if she has 10.4.9 or Leopard.
Upgrade if you like, but you can update your iMac to the latest Tiger version (10.4.11) for free with the following process:
Use your iMac's Disk Utility to repair permissions.  Then download and apply the 10.4.11 COMBO update:
  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL170
Repair permissions IMMEDIATELY again after the restart that finishes the installation.
Your new UVC webcam will work for all Apple (and many other) video apps using 10.4.11 as installed with the above Combo Update process. No other software addition would be required for iChat video.
Unfortunately, we'll probably be stuck at the low/Good quality since she has the older PowerPC processor, but it's better than nothing. At least until later this year when we get a new MacBook for her.
My *G4* PowerBook runs Tiger (10.4.11), and it handles video chat just fine. It is a fast G4, but your wife's G5 iMac will have NO shortage of power so long as she is not concurrently running multiple other applications and the iMac is not experiencing problems with other apps. All that is required is that it meet the system requirements for the app in use, such as iChat's which I linked earlier.
Lastly, Apple has Apple ever sold an external iSight?
Yes. I have two of them.
... I can't find one on their store, but if they used to sell it, I'd be willing to dig deeper to find an Apple camera to use for her.
I would not.
External iSight is a great camera, but they are getting old as electronics go, and you have no idea how the one you buy now has been used or treated by its previous owner(s).
I suggest that you buy locally and test any external iSight you are considering on your iMac before you pay for it. That way you know whether it will work, and a local seller may be able to answer questions, if any, about connecting and using iSight before you buy. If you need help with how to make sure an external iSight works, see "How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional."
Even if the external iSight you are considering is advertised as an NOS (new, old-stock) iSight, it is not likely covered by Apple Warranty. If the seller does not provide you written service guarantees or warranty, you may be want to check Apple's iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions, especially if you cannot test the iSight before you buy to be sure it is working.
Moreover, if you buy an external iSight now, verify whether all connectors, cables, and iSight mounts that you need are included. If some items you need are missing but you still want to buy the iSight, this info may be of interest. (Note that Apple no longer offers the "iSight Accessory Kit, Part Number: M9314G/B" that is mentioned there.)
If you needs parts from the discontinued Kit or some part those listed in the iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions page and cannot locate them in your area, the kind people at http://www.synaptech.com will help users obtain those that are still available.
If you consider buying an untested external iSight via an on-line auction or other internet seller, I strongly suggest that you (try to) get a written guarantee that you can have the iSight examined by your Apple Authorized Service Provider and can have a refund or exchange if the iSight doesn't pass his checks.
Once again, my sincerest thanks.
Dan
If you have other questions, Dan, Defcom (one of the three who taught me to video chat) and I will be happy to try to respond to your specifics.

  • Best Way to Video Chat iMac-to- PC

What is the best way to video chat between my wife's iMac and her mom's Vista PC? I was going to use Windows Live on the PC and Messenger on the iMac, but after installing Messenger and setting up a personal account, discovered that Messenger for Mac with a personal account does not support video; IM only! Crap. So, before I start installing other applications on either computer, and setting up accounts all over the place, I am hoping for some solid advice on the best way to go. My preference is to install the least applications on either computer, so anything we can do with what's already there is preferred.
Option 1 is to use Windows Live on the PC (it's ready to go) and put something on the iMac that will work with that. But, I can't find anything that will.
Option 2 is use iChat on the iMac, and install something on the PC. What works? What is best?
Option 3 is install Skype on both. Looks like that will work, but will it??
    Thanks!!

iChat can use a GoogleMail ID as a an Jabber ID in iChat and then it will Video chat to other iChat users that are also using a GoogleMail ID.
iChat uses just one set of Video and Audio codecs whether you are starting from the AIM Buddy List (the ones that login to the AIM server even if the Screen Name is from Apple) or a Jabber one or the Bonjour one.
Jabber servers on the whole (if they are doing Video and Audio) are using their own codecs called Jingle.
GoogleMail Video form their web page does something different in that it uses Flash to control your Camera and mic via the Web Browser.
It appears that this will however connect to PC users using the GoogleTalk App.
The TokBox site allows you to at least link your current MSN, Yahoo, AIM or Jabber IDs (Shows you separate Buddy Lists) and uses Flash like the GoogleMail web page.
I have not used it enough to see if it will Video form the Web Page to an App or if the other person also has to use a Web Browser.

  • What is the best way to video/chat

Hello, Have a mini, want to video chat and find there is no mic? What are your suggestions to solve this? Brands, Headphones, etc,, thanks

What camera are you using for the video chat? If the monitor has a camera for video chat, then it should have a mic in it. The web cam itself should have a mic. But to answer your question, any headphone that works with iPhones (like the Apple one with mic) will do the job.

  • What is best way to video an application for tutorial?

What is the best way to create a video tutorial of an application from the IPAD or Mac Notebook to be used for educational purposes - showing all detail of the application would be a must,

pretty sure there is no way for the ipad can record what goes on on the screen and make it a video
not even sure if 3th party apps would be allowed that level of hardware control as to record what other apps display

  • What is the best way watch video streamed to my iMac on my TV?

    Hi,
I'm trying to figure out the best way to watch video streamed to my iMac on my TV.  Or to watch a dvd inserted in my iMac on my TV.
My iMac has a Thunderbolt port (among other things).
My TV has HDMI inputs as well as a digital optical sound input.
I'd like to know the best way to do this both wired and wirelessly.  (And if it would make sense to use an Apple TV
    Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
An option is to buy a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a HDMI adapter, or a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4241
Apart from that, you can get an Apple TV and stream the computer to the Apple TV through AirPlay Mirroring > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404

  • 3 way iChat video chat

I can connect in video chat with one person, and then when I invite the third, it never works. It says "the person did not respond" or "can't connect." Any ideas on how to fix this?

Is the 3rd person you are trying to add a known user that has successful video chats?
You can try testing 3 or 4 way video chats with the apple test servers to see if the error is with your buddy or not.
    (Apple test servers are appleu3test01, appleu3test02, appleu3test03)
Lastly, are you meeting the internet connection requirments as found here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/ichat/

  • Best Camera for Video Chat?

First off I apologize if this question has come up before.
I'm thinking about purchasing the iSight for my Power Mac G4 (OS 10.3.9). I mainly need it for video chatting with relatives out of state (who are Windows users). They use Skype because its free, so before I spend the money I want to know if there are any compatibility problems from going with this particular webcam?
I'd appreciate as much detail/info as you can provide. Let me know if you know of any problems of video chatting between Mac & Windows Skype users in general.
    Thanks in advance!
P.S. if you strongly feel that I should consider another brand of webcam I'd appreciate it if you reply with a link (or at least the brand name and model number).
    Power Mac G4, 1 GHz Dual-Processor   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Macu,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
Apple have had to remove the External iSights from sale in Europe due to regulations about the content of the components used. The European Commission have had one of their moments and deemed how much of soemthing that is considered toxic should be in a device.
It also effect Airport Base Stations.
    I would try Resellers.
In Britain the new ruling allowed for older stocks to be sold off.

  • Any way to video chat between Messages and older Mac via iChat?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion yesterday and am beginning to regret it - I discovered that I will no longer be able to help my parents troubleshoot their MacBook as they have an older MacBook with Leopard 10.5.8, and their MacBook is not upgradeable to Mountain Lion given its heritage (too old). Prior to my upgrade to Mountain Lion, when they needed help we would both launch iChat and I would ask to take control of their screen.  Their account setup on iChat was through an AOL AIM username.
I looked into whether I could still launch a video sharing session with them using Messages from my end and they using iChat from their end (still with their AOL AIM username) but can find no evidence that that will work.
I am hoping that someone has figured out how to make all this work.  I researched FaceTime and it doesn't appear that it supports video chatting/screen sharing.
My last ditch option will be to see if I can gain access to their machine via internet remote access - but I'd rather steer clear of that.
Anybody know how to make this work - video chat and remote screen control between my Mac running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and remote Mac running Leopard 10.5.8?

Apologies if this is what you linked to... I cannot open the link on my office PC.
Have you tried the ReelPortal app?  This should be able to cover both of your needs: it allows video chat between Playbook and PC, and essentially broadcasts the video chat to a site.  (I have not attempted to capture the broadcast).  It's not the prettiest app out there, but does what you're looking for.

  • Best way for videos?

what is the best/easiest way to have videos put on your ipod?

Hopefully in answer to the many posts on “how to get various video formats onto your iPod” I have put together a summary of applications I use. I have tried a few others with varying amounts of success (some of which are free) - I have finally plumped for the software produced by Xilisoft as providing good quality video relatively affordable cost for use withPC’s and numerous MS operating systems. The link below takes you to their site which not only allows you to download trail versions of their software but also has a comprehensive set of tutorials and FAQ's for their iPod video conversion software.
I have regularly used these applications to convert various file formats to iPod friendly video. They are simple to use although frequently processor and RAM hungry:
Use Xilisoft iPod Video Converter if you want to:
[*]Convert various video file formats to MP4
[*]Convert most audio file formats to MP3
[*]Extract audio from video file and save to MP3
    [*]Encode several files simultaneously
[*]Pause encoding process to run other CPU time consuming programs at any time
    Supported file formats:
    Video:
    [*]MPEG(mpg, mpeg, dat, vob); WMV; ASF; AVI; QuichTime(mov, qt); MPEG4(mp4); 3GP; DV(dv,
    dif); Real Video(rm); Animated GIF(gif - decoding only); Macromedia Flash(swf - decoding
    audio only);
    Audio:
[*]MPEG Audio(mp2, mp3); WMA; WAV; AU; MPEG4 Audio(m4a); Real Audio(ra); OGG; AAC; Raw
    AC3(ac3); NUT Open Container Format(nut);
To convert DVD's to an iPod friendly video format:
Use Xilisoft DVD to iPod V4:
[*]Just pop the DVD in your drive select compression variables (default settings work well) and sit back!
All these products are available on a "try before you buy basis", yes there are applications for XP which are free but and may work just as well but I have converted many hours of video for my iPod without hassle using the Xilisoft products (no I don't work for them!). Check there web site HERE

  • Encrypted video chat only generates 'lock' icon on the originating side?

So, I just tried this out with 3 seperate systems, different .mac accounts and can't quite explain what's happening:
All systems have iChat encryption enabled. If I originate a call to someone else, the call gets established - but while during the establishing phase the lock icon is in both windows, once the chat is active, the lock is ONLY ever on the originating side.
However, all sides are capable of 'lock' - they just have to be the ones starting the chat.
Is this a common bug or does anyone have any suggestions? I disabled and re-enabled encryption, but to no avail.
I didn't even thing it was possible for ONE side only to be encrypted - that wouldn't make sense, would it?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi,
Anyone got an answer for this question yet?? I'm running 10.5.2 on both machines, both using different full .mac accounts and I'm having exactly the same problem, encryption works both ways with text chat and only one way with video chat!
    Cheers!
    James.

  • Video Chat: bad wifi connection after OS2.0 update

Hi, I have 4 playbooks, one for myself and three for my family living oversea. I bought three playbooks for my family for video chat. It worked fine (except huge e-mail problems=another issue) until I updated to OS2.0 one month ago. I have following problems after OS2.0 1) Video chat program cannot always on to wi-fi and to receptible the incoming calls. When I know I am receiving or calling, I have to restart playbook or / disconnect wifi and connect again to establish the wi-fi connection for the Video chat. (while I am having this problem I can use internet without problem) 2) When I was in the older OS before OS2.0 it did not have this problem. Once established the wifi connection, it does not disconnect wi-fi so soon like this new OS2.0. I need help for 1) Is there any way to solve this problem? for 2) I'd rather go back to my old OS system. I searched every where for the old OS (OS1?) but I could not find it. Please let me know how to go back to the old OS system. I appreciate your help. Thank you!

You can't, not without hacking it anyway and we don't go there.
There's just over a million playbooks working fine on 2.1 so I would look elsewhere for your problem. Try reinstalling 2.1 latest vis desktop.

  • Fring video chat on E5-00

    hi there,
i tried every possible way but video chat in fring is not working.
    1) i received other party video but it is dividing into two parts. by which i can't see them properly.
    2) other party can't see me at all.
please provide me any solution or at least tell me the problem.
    kindly reply soon.
    Regards
    Rehan

Since you have an E5 which is a model, you should have downloaded and installed the current version of Fring. Just in case you haven't you may also check to ensure that the other phone also has the latest version installed.
I have used Fring many time over wifi only. It works fine but image quality is not the best and is choppy. It s possible that the bandwidth on either end is not high enough to transmit th video properly

  • Share Screens with Video Chat?

Is there any way to continue video chat while sharing screens? I hate it when it closes it out automatically.

The Screen Share includes a Audio chat at the same time.
You can not have two A/V chats at the same time in the manner you describe.
It would be useful for classrooms though to be able to talk several students trough the same lesson/demo of a a Shared Screen.
But there again a Audio Multichat and a Second screen/projector would also do that.
