Best ways to boost my Z61p?

New to the forum, so hi all!
Got myself a ~3 yrs old Z61p; love this marvel of engineering, but I'm starting to find it a bit slow. Asking for a few tips and experience of upgrading some of the hardware to prolong the life of the laptop before I have to get a new one. New Thinkpads with high-res screens aren't exactly cheap...
The model I've got is Z61p 0674-KSG with the following specs: T7200(2GHz), 2GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 15.4in 1920x1200 LCD, 256MB ATI FireGL V5200
Got a fresh install of W7, 32-bit, working really nice with Lenovo's latest drivers and utilities.
What I'm thinking about upgrading is
- Install a SSD instead of the HDD. About $100 for a 40-60 GB model. How much would I gain from this?
- Upgrade to 3 or 4 GB of RAM(?). $100 tops, worth the buck?
- I'm suspecting a CPU upgrade is not even worth considering...
- New graphics? Any other tips?
BTW, not using any "really" demanding apps (no CAD, no gaming, etc), just alot of firefox'ing, plus other similar office/web_connected-like apps. Usually quite a lot of them at the same time. Also the occasional photoshop'ing and similar.
Thanks!
Jonas

1. SSD may increase your data access speed, which will boost the speed of laptop if you have programs that requires lot of data access.
2. 3->4 gigs won't produce any difference, since the chipset is capped at 3 gigs of ram. So don't waste money on this.
3. CPU upgrade may produce a slight difference, but it would also produce more heat, which in my opinion is not worth the effort.
4. New graphics card is not possible, since the GPU is soldered to the motherboard.

  • Best way to Boost Signal from a Time Capsule is?

Is the best way to boost my wifi signal from the time capsule an Airport Express?
Is there anything out there better, faster?
    Thanks!

There's a good step by step in the Designing AirPort Networks guide, pages 43-44.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Apple_AirPort_NetworksEarly2009.pdf
When you are configuring an AirPort Express with AirPort Utility, it will usually help to temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the Express. Once you have it configured and updated, you can remove the cable and move the Express back to the desired location.
The key things to keep in mind are that both the base station and the extending device must be configured. All you will need to do on the base station is open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup and Click the Wireless tab. Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended" and update to save changes. If you have a dual band base station, only the main network can be extended.
On the Express, the Wireless Mode is set to "Extend a Wireless Network". When you do this, the wireless network created by the base station will appear so you can select that network to "extend". You will need to enter the password for your wireless etc. It's important to remember to click the check box next to "Allow wireless clients".
By the way, the ethernet port is also active when you setup the Express to extend, so if you need to get ethernet to a device like a DVR, DVD player, etc., this is a nice way to do so.

  • Best way to boost wifi signal?

    Hello,
I just got a new imacG5 with the wireless integrated. I can connect to my wireless network at home, but the signal I get where I have my computer is very low, close to none. I was wondering if anyone could recomend the best way to boost my wireless signal (relays, boosters, bridges, etc.).
    Thanks
    imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I use Airport Express. Signal is strong within 50 feet of my computer (54 mps). I'm able to use my iBook anywhere in the house (we live on one-floor). Device was very easy to set up. Very reliable piece of equipment.
You can find a good price on Amazon (usually around $100), including free shipping, although not sure about the "free" part for shipments to Puerto Rico.

  • What is the best way to amplify a wifi signal in your home?

i run my wifi on an Airport Extreme  and added an Express in an effort to boost my wifi signal throughout the house but it doesn't seem to have helped much.  Pretty expensive solution for not really solving my problem.  Any idea's??

Can you tell us if the AirPort Express is connected to the AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection (this is the best way to extend a wireless network).....or.....is the AirPort Express communicating to the AirPort Extreme using only a wireless signal?
Do you have a Mac laptop handy to check some settings?  If yes, what operating system is the Mac using?
If you are not sure, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the Mac's screen, then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.

  • Best Way to Liven a Slightly Dull Recording

I'm starting to notice that most of my mixes are actually a little too "warm", they seem to be missing some high frequency energy. Many of the tunes sound better in my car when i bump the treble up a notch or two.
My guess is that I'm losing high frequencies due to imbalanced absorbtion in the studio. I'm constructing new panels this week that will be far superior to the current eggshell foam (yikes!), but would love some input on the best way to correct this after the fact.
Should I attempt to add some highs back in on individual tracks first, or just treat this in mastering, as all of the instruments that were recorded live are likely to have similar frequencies missing? Linear phase eq on the master output, multi band compression, or download and try out Ozone? Thanks everybody.
Once I get the band's permission I'm going to post some of the songs, I would love some constructive criticism as well.

OK, so the ( inexistent ) SRC won't hurt your track.
POW-r algos were optimized for signals in ( what I've heard )
    #1 Speech
    #2 Pop
    #3 Classical
That's signal dynamics and frequency not the intent, very generalized examples and nothing near a rule of thumb. 3 may work best for a Pop track and any variations. If you are going to pick one without comparing you could try #2... but it is best to compare when you have time. An easy way to compare is to reduce the input amplitude, then boost the post dither output ( in effect, amplifying the noise/dither )..
By amplitude practices, I just meant your gain structures in the mix/mastering stages. An example would be how high is the peak sample of the bounce... since you say your mixes have dynamic range you'll have less to worry about there too.
That old thread... I can actually guess the one. The closest measurement I have made so far has been -188 dB Signal/error ratio induced by rounding, which of course accumulates.
Usually, the value off the fader is anything bit 0 ( makes perfect sense, different fader settings normally just apply different degrees of DC Offset or around -188 dB. If you really listen and demand excellence, you can hear it. I have since come up with a wokaround which should be lossless so I can continue in my merry way with less compromise while recording.
    re: Fooling with tight mixes
yeah, you could try moving all that automation around but usually it doesn't end up quite the same.
    Cheers,
    J

  • Any way to boost audio input when recording?

Hi; I have been recording speech interviews with Audio-Technica mics on a ProTools set-up and they've sounded great.
I've recently tried recording using the mics in Garageband using a M-Audio Mobile Pre USB, but the audio levels are always too low unless the subject is an inch or two from the mic, which isn't the best way to get quality audio.
Is there any way to boost the audio input when recording in GB or any other tricks people know of?
    thx, Charlie

I'm actually having the same problem, except I'm recording straight into the computer (no interface).
I tried using an MBox, but the computer won't even recognize it...(if anyone's got suggestions for why that is, I'll gladly take them...).
My main question is the same as Charles's, however - how come the input level is so soft when recording using the "Built-In Input" (where I can use a mic, and have mobility) as opposed to the "Built-In Microphone"?

  • Best way to increase wifi range

I am accessing a router that is a good distance away ~50feet or so. I've never had a big problem with conectivity in the past, but recently I'm lucky just to connect. I'm wondering if there is a good way to boost the chip strength in the computer or if I can hookup a stronger external antenna to help. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

50 feet shouldnt really be much of an issue, unless its going through really thick walls, or lead or water etc.
the best bet would be to invest in an access point for the area.
in relation to the macbook pro, no you cant add an antenna to it.

  • Best way to get 3/4 inch tape material into FCP?

I have several 3/4 inch tapes I would like to edit on my FCP system.
I can only Capture through firewire.
Is it better to transfer the 3/4 material to DVD or create QT files?
(I can create the QT files on an Avid Adrenaline)
I need to keep the material at the best quality.
    Thanks.

OK, I'm back now. Let's get to the first part of your question... and some tips.
To start with let me clear up some semantic errors that I may have inadvertently created. When I say "up-rez" I'm not talking about it the way you would use the term in print production and Photoshop. I was using the term "up-rez" as a more generic term meaning a general improvement in picture quality and upgrade of color space.
Now, to the improvement I have seen by taking my DV source material into a sequence using PhotoJPEG 75% or DVCPRO50 codecs with a 4:2:2 color space.
First, as a baseline, to all of my DV clips in the timeline I add the "4:1:1 Color Smoothing" filter as the first in line, and the final filter is always "Broadcast Safe" set to the lowest preset of "100" or "Extremely Conservative." If I use any color correction filter I always use it after the color smoothing and before "Broadcast Safe." Unless it works better using a different order, but this is where I start. However "Color Smoothing" is almost always the first filter.
It is the "Color Smoothing" filter that provides the extra chroma data that is used by the 4:2:2 codec to "improve" the color after rendering. Now understand, this is an interpolation process. The computer is guessing at what the extra color data should be. But in most cases where my goal is to provide "pleasing color" the computer usually makes some pretty good guesses.
Especially if you use color correction to remove any exising color casts from the clips in question. If you have a definite color cast in your original clip, you may find it necessary to color correct that cast out, then add the Color Smoothing, and then do your "primary" or "balancing" color correction by adding that filter a second time in the list to get things to look right. Confused yet? Don't be - if you have a good calibrated video monitor, then you can really trust your eyes a lot more than you might think. The point is, if you present the "Color Smoothing" filter with reasonably good color when it looks at the DV clip, then it will do a good job of "enhancing" your color after you render with a 4:2:2 codec.
Oh yeah, make sure your rendering quality level in the "Video Processing" tab of the sequence "Settings" is set to the best you have. FCP 4.5 and FCP 5.x differ slightly in how they word this setting, but the intent is the same.
So that's how I "improve" the color of a DV clip by taking it into a sequence with a 4:2:2 color space. I hope I explained it clearly enough.
BTW - Nattress suggests using PhotoJPEG 75% over DVCPRO50 for content that comes from an analog capture. He says that an unintended but positive consequence of the "lossy" compression in the PhotoJPEG codec is to remove some of the latent analog noise from the video during final rendering and encoding. I had my doubts about this at first since the specs would suggest that DVCPRO50 is the best way to go. But after trying it out I must say that Graeme is dead-on with this. A lot of the minor video noise in the luminence and chroma that comes in with the analog video is removed pretty cleanly when you look at your final rendered digital video. So once again we learn that Graeme Nattress is "The Man."
The truly scary thing is that among his peers in the community of this forum, Nattress is only one of several similar intellects. This forum is a gold mine for all of us FCP users. Nattress, Shane, Sheffield, and all the rest who I am probably making mad because I forgot to mention them -- wow! We couldn't afford to take classes from all these guys, and here they give it all for free. I hope everyone appreciates the value of the resource we have in this forum. I certainly do. Belated and future thanks to all you gurus out there.
Anyway, back to your analog capture issues. Here's some tips from my own experience. When doing my initial capture from analog via the A-to-D converter...
    1) I always find I need to boost the saturation levels a bit. Use a vectorscope to keep track of this, but my analog source material always seems to come in 20 to 25% light in the chroma value. Boosting the saturation setting a little bit in the convertor fixes this.
    2) I know I'll get some arguments about this one. In my ADVC-300 I have a "Sharpening" setting, with "0" being no enhancement, "-100" being totally blurred, and "+100" being totally sharpened. I find that adding a significant amount of "sharpening" to my capture settings really improves the quality of the analog input without leaving a lot of visible and unpleasant artifacts in the picture. So I always add between +15 and +35 of sharpening. Usually +25 works best so that's where I start.
Now, understand that I find this completely counter-intuitive after my years of experience with digital image editors and scanning software like "Photoshop" and "Scantastic," and the generally complete uselessness of the vanilla "sharpen" tools for sophisticated image enhancement. But for some reason, with these tools in this environment, "sharpening" works wonders.
The way it looks to me when I compare the "before" and "after" by switching the inputs on my video monitor is that the "after" picture looks like someone properly backlit the scene. The entire effect is to give that look of 3D depth to the picture that still photographers call "snap," and that I was taught to try to achieve by the guys who taught me TV lighting. When used in a subtle and appropriate fashion, the effect of this "sharpening" filter is stunning. But this is a matter of personal taste. To my eye the sharpened picture looks better, but you may disagree. Like I said, it's a matter of taste.
I must add that I am unable to duplicate these results by adding FCP's sharpening filter to an already digitized clip. This says to me that either you need to sharpen before digitizing, or the sharpening algorithm in my Canopus ADVC-300 is way better than the FCP filter. I don't know which it is, but I really don't need to know, practically speaking. It's practical results we are after here, so I can live with the mystery.
    3) Always go back to the earliest generation of analog source tapes you can find. If this means re-editing the program, then be prepared to do it if max quality is your goal.
In 3/4-inch U-matic format (and especially with 1/2-inch S-VHS or lesser formats) the difference in picture quality between a third-generation dub and a second-generation edit master is immense. Look at the degradation of edge definition and the increase in noise between the generations. It's huge. It's even more striking if you compare the first-generation master tapes with a distribution dub or duplication master.
Conversely, don't even waste your time if you have a fourth-gen or later distribution dub. If you are dealing with a late generation tape source, then none of our digital and computer editing or enhancement wizardry will matter a hoot. Garbage in equals garbage out. So if you really care about quality, be prepared to go back to the earliest generation tape you can find, even if that means re-editing the program from the first-gen shooting masters.
OK, that's all I have for you right now. Please post any additional questions or any comments you have on my missives and I'll be glad to get into this further - at least until you suck me dry of usable info.
Let me leave you with this. It's funny how viewers don't seem to mind poor video quality when watching a late-gen dub on a VHS player. But when you offer them a DVD, they expect to see feature film or broadcast TV quality, and if they don't see something close they won't watch the program with the same degree of receptivity.
In my experience, picture quality really matters in its effect on the communication process, and that's why we should all take it seriously. Worrying about quality is not a purely technical exercise important only to technicians. Poor audio and poor video quality will negatively impact the communication process. That's why we care about quality.
After all, it's our business - the COMMUNICATION business. That's the perspective I try to maintain in my work.
Good Luck in your endeavor. Please let me know how it works out. My e-mail address is in my posted profile.

  • Is there any way to boost a signal.

The television signal to each unit gets lost every hour for about 5 minutes, and the tech can't come back for 5 days according to the 800-Comcast. Is there any way to boost the signal in the mean time?

  • What is the best way to set up iTunes on our home network so all family members have access to all of our itunes library, even music we don't have on the cloud?

I have five different people using 10 different apple devices on one itunes account in our family.  We have had trouble sharing.  What is the best way to set up itunes on our home network?  We have purchased music that sits on icloud, but we also have music we have imported from our previous cd library.  Our itunes program keeps crashing and dumping everyone's playlists.  So far we have all been using just the one desktop computer to sync to because we can't figure out how to share the same librarly and playlists on multiple computers in our home so devices can be synced at any location as well as playlists and purchases be made.

What is the best way to set up itunes on our home network?
One iTunes library per person.  One iTunes account per person.
If people wish to share songs, they can make copies.
When the inevitable day comes when the kids get older, you will not have to come back here and post asking how all that stuff can get separated!

  • When I send a webpage via email, some of my recipients are unable to see it properly. The website was made with iWeb, and a Mac person advised me this was the best way to do an email campaign with iWeb, but it's not working for a lot of my customers - why

I have recently created a website for my family's business. When we bought the Macbook the guy in Apple said the best way to send an email campaign to our mailing list was to publish a hidden page, find it in the browser on Safari, then share it via email, so that is what I do. For most of my customers this works fine, however I have a number of people each month who cannot see any of the content of the email. I have added an 'If you can't see this email properly...' link at the top of the page, with no shapes or images etc near it, but even that does not appear for them.
I am a self-taught novice unfortunately, so haven't a clue what the problem is. I'm not sure of the operating system, but we bought the Macbook in May and it has all the recent updates installed. I have just had a new baby so can't get into the store fdor a one-to-one, so if anyone could explain why this happens / what I can do about it, I would be very grateful! Thanks!

If you think getting your web pages to appear OK in all the major browsers is tricky then dealing with email clients is way worse. There are so many of them.
If you want to bulk email yourself, there are apps for it and their templates will work in most cases...

This one will create the form, database and send out the emails...

The alternative is to use a marketing service if your business can justify the cost. Their templates are tested in all the common email clients...

  • Best way to refresh page after returning from task flow?

    Hello -
    (Using jdev 11g release 1)
What is the best way to refresh data in a page after navigating to and returning from a task flow with an isolated data control scope where that data is changed and commited to the database?
    I have 2 bounded task flows: list-records-tf and edit-record-tf
    Both use page fragments
    list-records-tf has a list.jsff fragment and a task flow call to edit-record-tf
The list.jsff page has a table of records that a user can click on and a button which, when pressed, will pass control to the edit-record-tf call. (There are also set property listeners on the button to set values in the request that are used as parameters to edit-record-tf.)
The edit-record-tf always begins a new transaction and does not share data controls with the calling task flow. It consists of an application module call to set up the model according to the parameters passed in (edit record X or create new record Y or...etc.), a page fragment with a form to allow users to edit the record, and 2 different task flow returns for saving/cancelling the transaction.
Back to the question - when I change a record in the edit page, the changes do not show up on the list page until I requery the data set. What is the best way to get the list page to refresh itself automatically upon return from the edit-record-tf?
(If I ran the edit task flow in a popup dialog I could just use the return listener on the command component that launched the popup. But I don't want to run this in a dialog.)
Thank you for reading my question.

What if you have the bean which has refresh method as TF param? Call that method after you save the data. or use contextual event.

  • Best way to use return values in a webservices

    Hi all,
Scenario: We have three web services. What is the best way to do this acitivity or is it possible?
    webservice1
    webservice2
    webservice3
Call invoke webservice1 & 2 (they need to their work do be done parallely and will return a value eg "string")and call webservices3 with input values as the returned value from webservice 1 & 2.
    Thanks,
    Shashi
    Edited by: Shashi_sr on Sep 17, 2010 1:46 PM

    Hi Shashi,
The way to achieve your desired functionality is as follows:
Create a flow activity, and within that flow activity, you will call web services (using an invoke activity) webservice1 and webservice2.
After the flow activity, you will then use another invoke activity to call the 3rd webservice using the output given by the first 2 webservices.

  • Which is Best way to pool DB connections on Server no-J2EE???

I have a applicatio, which run on very different app servers (WebSpere, JRun and i-Planet)... the db conncetion problems existe whit server no-J2EE compliant, like as i-Planet.
On J2EE servers I cant use Server DataSource to pooled connection, and server make this work transparently and good.
But, if have to manually manage to pool connection, which is the best way?
Befor use Poolman package... by CodeStudio, but is not effective for me...
Now, are studying the Jackarta-Commons DBCP...
Which is the best ?... there is other solution for this problem ?.
    thx !

App in I'm work, make exhaustive use of db connection,
only on startup, use a average of 130 connection
    request on less 10 secconds.
All connection requested, when finish to use, there
are closed, supposeddly, the closed connction are
returned to pool, but this no happend it quickl, How do you know it doesn't happen quickly?
Normally a returned connection would just be inserted into a list with a possible state change. That would be very quick in java. It might check the state of the connection and that is going to take longer Another pool manager might do the same though.
    then,
if pool is able to create emmergency connections (up
num max) always returned new connection, any one
else, if pool can't create emmergency connection
objects, app wait for free connection of pool... long
delay !Of course, but any pool is going to do that.

Find My iPhone is good for misplaced iPhone but not good for thief and it was never meant to be.
You chance of getting it back is very small.
There are a few things you can try.
Try remote lock/wipe your iPhone through Find My iPhone.

You can report to the police, cell carrier (expensive cell charges for international calls, roaming etc)
Change all the passwords used in iPhone: Apple ID, E-mail, Bank Account ....
