Best ways to cool down my mdd

i am looking for tips and or tricks to help keep my mdd cool... anything short of sitting it in front of the air condidtioner. the older this mac gets, and the more intense the apps get with each new version, this machine seems to keep getting hotter and hotter. i have this mac maxed out at 2gb ram. i have removed both superdrives as they were both dead anyways. i figured remove these and less power would be drawn through the system. i have 3 of the 4 hd slots filled. my main use of this machine now is to browse the web, check mail and be a repository for files, photos and music. i recently acquired a 2 ghz macbook and i do most of my photo work with this machine and use the mdd to store everything. i have the hardware preference pane installed from the developer tools that allows me to switch on the NAP function. if i didnt use this, my fans would run high 24/7. if i go to video intense sites like you tube, or my duaghter gets on her webkinz page, the fans then run high. can i different fans? should i uninstall apps i dont use?.....

thanks everyone for all yr suggestions....years ago, i removed the clear plastic piece behind the bottom front foot to allow more air in. that seemed to help in the beginning. every year i notice this mac keeps getting warmer. i have temp monitor installed which helps me keep an eye on things. i do keep this machine cleaned out, although on an irregular basis. i just added a third hd and it wasnt really dirty. i will pick up some canned air and give this a good blow. i cant remember at the moment if i put that new drive in the from or the back. seeing as its a 500 gb drive i should check and make sure its pushed to the back of the machine. i will look into putting in more fans. i dont have much room for anything like that on my desk at the moment.
my current temp is is 114f / 455c, and thats with the NAP function turned on. when i switch this off my temp jumps to 138f / 59c. the only apps i am using while typing this are firefox and temp monitor. and dashboard with two widgets....and the fans are running at a medium speed with nap off. though there have been several occasions where the fans have ran much higher, but thats only been if the power is knocked off, the mac restarts, sits for a spell and the NAP function isnt on.
i even looked into tracking down a script or have automator turn this NAP function on when restarts like that happen. but no luck. my daughter and girlfriend can never seem to remember to turn on Nap when needed...
anyways, thanks to all.....

  • Best way to cool MacBook Pro

I've been looking at ways to cool my MacBook Pro down when gaming. I've come across two in particular: Targus Chill Mat for Mac [AWE41US] and ThermaPak HeatShift Pad. Any suggestions on which would work better or other options?

Found this post while doing my own search for similar reasons. It is hard to find a cooler that will have much effect on that upper left area that gets really warm. Most seem to be designed to blow air up into the middle/bottom of the machine and  exhaust from the sides. That is little help.  If I play an mmorpg like swtor, the machine runs very hot even over a short period of time. Here is where I am starting.
I am waiting on a Cooler Master notepal U3. It is aluminum and has 3-80mm fans that can be placed where you want them to blow. If I am able to get the result I am looking for I will probably replace the fans with something a little more robust and quieter.

  • Best way to break down a string?

    Hi.
I am wondering, what is the best way to get all the substrings with a patten from a string.
    Here is an example.
    String str = "|hello|123456|a,b,c,d,e,|"
i want to get all the substrings between 2 consecutive "|" symbols.
    hello
    123456
    a,b,c,d,e,
is there a build in method to achieve it? Read it char by char is the only way?

what do you think is most efficient way of doing it?i would use the substring command and look for the index's of the characters you wan't it saves a lot of space compared to the charAt command.. something kinda like this(you prob need to fix it up some)
    )String str = "|hello|123456|a,b,c,d,e,|"
    int index = 0
    while (front < str.LastindexOf("|")

  • What is the best way to shut down an iMac that has frozen during a data transfer? The disk I was writing to will not eject. Stopping "copy items to" doesn't work either_ it is frozen as well. Is there a way to force eject the disk so I can shut down?

Some more information on the above: OS: 7.2
    1. None of the shutdown commands would work so I held the power button down and received a prompt that asked if I wished to force eject the drive, I selected
the force eject and then shut down.
    2. Just recently I installed an eSATA _ Thunderbolt_ port multiplier compliant PCIe card (Seritek Q6G) into a thunderbolt external chassis (OWC Helios) (seritek Q6G).
This freeze data transfer also happened when I connected a Firmtek 5PM external tower to the iMac via thunderbolt cable.
The driver for the seritek Q6G was installed in the iMac previous to connection of any of the devices.
Both external towers mount ok on the iMac but have frozen during data transfer.
The initial freeze was with the Firmtek 5PM which is (JBOD)_ I thought that might have had something to do with the freeze_ it being JBOD_ so next I tried the Mercury Elite AL Pro Q2- which is formated in RAID 5. But then froze too.
Anybody have any experience with this?
    Maybe I need another driver?
Or maybe some update to my OS?
    Any suggestions welcomed.
    Thank you

Hello BDAqua, thanx for the suggestions. Before I saw this reply I tried to first quit the finder and then to relaunch the Finder but that resulted was a blank gray screen.
In the end I ended up having to power down the iMac.
Fortunately the RAID array that was "active" seems to be fine and also has a firewire 800 connection so I can use it_ just not with thunderbolt until this issue is solved.
I'm going to check in the Applications>Utilities>system log to see if any clues are evident_ thank you for the suggestion.
PS: Nothing of note was obvious as a root cause in the Activity Monitor though.
hmmm....I was told that the Helios and seritek card were compatable and that the Helios didn't require any drivers..it will be a drag if there isn't an easy fix for this since this new PCIe card from seritek is the first to offer port multiplier compatibility for eSATA to thunderbolt...since they are both new I'm hoping that an OS upgrade will be the fix (presently7.2)...we shall see.

  • Best way to power down modem and router

At the start of this year I had a steady 63Mbps.  By July it had fallen to 50Mbps due to a series of power cuts, Hub auto resets and a BT service failure over a weekend.
Since then it has risen slowly back to 59Mbp as the system sees a steady line.
I need to do some work in the house and will need to switch off the power to the sockets for a few hours.
Is there a preferred sequence to powering off the hub and modem ( ie.one before the other or together) and then bringing them back on-line to avoid the system thinking I have an unsteady line and drop my speed again.

  • Best way to handle when Production XI is in outrage/down

    Hi All,
My production box is running smoothly now.If we want to go for any outrage and still we will be receiving many messages through internet from many partners.
So we are expecting how to receive the messages when production XI is in outrage. My client is thinking of putting one more instance with the replica of Production box. So that when the main production is in outrage then immediately they can switch back to this replica version and they can process the messages untill the main one get ready.
Now I am very much concern what are the implication will be if we go like this.
    1. which is the best way to handle XI box to maintain when the system is outrage/down?
    2. Is it a good idea of creating replica of production instance and maintaing this when the main one is in outrage?
Kindly suggest what you guys are doing for your implementations.
    Thanks
    Seema

XI Box - Outrage -Should be a robotic XI Box. Now I know that you are thinking what to do when cops come and handcuff it. -- Just kidding..
Ok, here's the logic, you want to replace a piece of water pipe that gets water to your faucet. What do you do without the water leaking or disrupting the water supply... you either turn off the valve or add a temp pipe to keep the water flowing..
So check into your sys landscape for Fail safe or High Availability, may be one of those can save you money and time.

  • I use my I mac every day what is the best way to shut it down?

I use my imac every day. What is the best way to shut it down? Do I let it sleep or manually shut it down?

That can start a lot of debate...some say shutdown, others sleep.  I am in the same camp as Niel...let it sleep.  I only shutdown if I am going to be away from the computer for more than a few days.  Sleeping keeps a constant temperature and does not thermal cycle like shutdown and startup.

  • What's the best way to transfer files from dead MDD G4 PowerMac to new iMac desktop?

My Mirrored Drive Door 1 ghz G4 Power Mac recently stopped powering on. I have just purchased a new iMac with 2.5 ghz intel core i5. What is the best way for me to transfer the files to the new machine?
Someone on another thread recommended buying a converter cable like this one: http://www.newertech.com/products/usb2_adaptv2.php
Will I need to use transfer software too? I'd like to bring my playlists along to the new machine but don't need any of the software.
    Thanks!

That will work. You could also remove the hard drive from the MDD and put it in an external enclosure so you would have it for backup.
You can use the utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, to transfer files - MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.

  • Best way to to display tables with a select drop down

I have created many SQL query report portlets, but I need a way for the users to select a specific acct nbr in a drop down list and then update a table on the same page. What is the best way to do this? I had created a Frame Driver, but I can not find a way to publish it to a page. Any ideas would be great, thanks.

    Hi,
You can use a form based on table to do this. Build the form and publish it on the same page. The form can have a combination of various form items like textbox, textarea and drop down list etc. The form allows to query on the table and update the table.
    Thanks,

  • The best way to apply Themal Grease

In your opinions, what is the best way to apply thermal grease when using an aftermarket heat sink for CPU cooling?
Is it best to apply the grease to the heat sink (taking a chance of it smearing across the CPU) or apply directly to the CPU in the correct area and then placing the heat sink on the CPU?
I ask because I have never tried an aftermarket heat sink before and don't want to screw things up
Thanks guys for all the help

well the reason ask is because the last time i tried it on the heat sink and stuck the heat sink on the cpu, the grease gooped over to the other parts of the cpu it's not supposed to be on.  so i removed the heat sink, cleaned everything up and then applied to the cpu on the die, smoother it out and stuck the heat sink on and clamped it down.  when i removed the heat sink, it look all nice and pretty and not sloppy.
didn't know if you guys had any other ideas.  of course, i didn't know how much actually needed to be applied.  so i'm thinking i might have put too much on in the first place

  • What is the best way to burn full hd movie to dvd

Hi i need to find the best way to burn full hd movie from panasonic camcorder to dvd thanks

    Hi
    There is NON !
as DVD is as Standard (Whatever program used) - only Interlaced SD-Video Quality
So if You need better then
    • Use Blu-Ray (Roxio Toast™ + BD-Burner and Disks)
    • or Save out to an USB-Memory stick and play this
What's worse is that iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - Can not deliver even DVD-Standard but degrades the quality by discarding every second line in the picture. This happens when going from Eventy's to Project's - Ther is no way around this but to use another program that can deliver as
    • iMovie up to HD6 - or -
    • FinalCut any version
If iMovie 08-11 are only option then do not
    • Share to iDVD - as this also degrades the final DVD - but -
    • Share to Media Browser - and as MEDIUM (or ev. as Large) - NOT HD or other resolution as this too degrades the final DVD due to BAD downscaling in iDVD program.
    My notes on DVD quality:
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
    • Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices
    • No other process running in background as - ScreenSaver, EnergySaver OR TIMEMACHINE etc
    • and I'm very careful on what kind of video-codecs, audio file format and photo file formats I use
    • and I consider the iDVD Bug - never go back to video-editor to change/up-date - if so Start  a brand new iDVD project
    • Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
Try to break the process up into two stages
    • Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
    • Burn from this .img file (burning stage)
To isolate where the problem starts.
Another thing is - Playing it onto a Blu-Ray Player. My PlayStation3 can play BD-disks but not all of my home made DVDs so to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
    • Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices

    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
    • No File Vault on - Important
    • NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
    • Lot's of icons on DeaskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
    • Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
    • And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

  • Whats the best way to clean an imac?

Hi, I've had my iMac for about five years, the white 20-inch iMac. I've noticed some flickring on the screen when I change window; looks like static for just a mili-second on screen. Also, sometimes I see dots and lines in the dropshadow of active windows... I've heard this is due to dust in the fan. What would be the best way of cleaning it out?

Could also just be an accumulation of dust on the botton grill work and small air intake behind the stand that is causing the iMac and graphics to run hot.
Every few months I shut down (stopping the fans) and vigorously vacuum the bottom grill work and small intake of my 2006 Early Core Duo to keep it running cool.
Check your current tempuratures with iStat Pro, vacuum the air intakes and check again. Apple - Downloads - Dashboard Widgets - iStat Pro
Unfortunatly if however the Graphic's chip is damaged from repeated overheating, then really the only fix is a very expensive repair or a new iMac.

  • What is the best way to work with Word documents in The InDesign CS4???

I work in Microsoft Word 2007 and all my documents have *.doc format.
What is the best way to work with Word documents in InDesign CS4???
David Blatner says to avoid copying and pasting text from Word instead of placing it (Ctrl+D).
How about pasting RTF or Text Document???
I want to make book's layout in ID CS4 and its main feature is that there is the left page with text and the right - with graphics.
So, as I understand to place the text on each page I must create for example 70 Word documents and place each item on 70 left pages???
It loks like wasting time. I sthere another way of making such layout???  What kind????

It's best to place any text.
You can have all of your text in one file and use auto-flow to add threaded text frames and pages as required (Hold down the Shift key when you click the loaded text cursor), but it's a little non-standard to have the thread only on one side of the spread from the auto-flow perspective, so you'll have to set up properly.
This is one case where a master text frame will work to your advantage. On your master page spread, add a text frame to the left page, but not to the right (or at least not threaded to one on the right -- for some other project you might actually want two independent text threads). Hold the loaded cursor over a frame on the left side of a document page and auto-flow. ID will add new spreads as necessary, but only put the text on the left side.

  • What is the best way to import and edit a large amount of footage?

    Hello Apple world,
As a newbie to Final Cut 10 I have a question regarding best ways to import footage. I'll give you a quick run down.
I have a 150 gig of gopro footage that I just hit 'import' to recently (from my external HD), it took around 10 hours to process it all.
Its all under one event, but then somewhat organised into dates etc. But it is very slow. I imported it all at once because it was all footage from the last 6 months of my Whistler/states/fiji trip and want to make a movie out of it, using clips from all over the time, not just in chronological order.
I have the latest mac book pro, 4 gig ram,2.4 GHz i7, 750 hard drive, with nothing else on the computer.
Ive read about creating proxy media, after ive imported, but am still somewhat confused as to the benefit. Does it create duplicates? that will fill up my pretty large HD as it is!
Can you suggest any ways that might make my laptop run a bit faster? Should i delete and work directly from external HD etc etc?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

    Hello,
I've just finished shooting what I am considering to be my directorial masterpiece.  Shot it on the Canon 5D (1080p, 24fps), and the footage looks amazing.  Now I am ready to start editing and have been using premiere lately, but I have yet to figure out the proper pipeline.  I want to know the best way to retain resolution before I delve into this project.
    My questions:
    1)  What is the best way to start a new project and import the footage without having to render whilst editing, so as to retain all resolution and originality of the source footage?
    2)  What is the best way/ codec/ format to export this same footage once editing is complete so as to retain that crisp 1080p for which the 5D is so recognized?
    3)  What is the best way/ codec/ format to import and export/ render between premiere and after effects?  I am speaking mostly of vfx and color correction.  I also have some 30fps footage that I intend to slow down in AE and then import into premiere.
I know this is pretty broad, but as a solo filmmaker I really need someone's guidance.  I rarely ever finish my films with the same, crisp look as the footage.  I need pipeline help, and really appreciate it!
    1. Follow the advice above. Also use the Media Browser to import the footage in case you have spanned media files. Import files with the Media Browser.
    2. It largely depends on what you wish to ouput to: Blu-ray, web, etc. This FAQ gives the best answer: What are the best export settings?
    3. Use the Replace with Adobe After Effects Composition function.
