Thanks for your answer. I am now looking at an Asus RT AC 66U. **bleep** shame as the report I have seen on the EA 6700 are first class. Does anyone know if the ASUS will support VLan?

The Apple Routers "just work".
I also have a linksys. It takes a good bit of knowledge and aggravation getting it set up, but once working it does fine.
If you plan to use your router to share a printer, hook to your stereo, etc. definitely stick with Apple. It will save you much grief.

I'll have to get back to you on what card my wifes laptop is using. I think it's a 802.11a/g, but I will confirm. My Powerbook 1.67 has the built in wireless card and to be honest, I have never looked to see what it uses.
We have our D-Link router set up for WPA2.
Neither her or I have had any issues when we have had to connect anywhere to any other wireless network and when I come home, I can connect back to my router automatically since my network is set up on my Powerbook as my 1st network of choice in connecting.
As far as replacing the antenna, I really dont know. It's has 3 antennas on it and I get a great signal, so I never thought about replacing it.

Again. Apple (for whatever reason) doesn't make country specific devices generally with a few expections. Your MacBook in the UK is like my MacBook in the US. Same with Time Capsule. It's the same everywhere. I just don't think (and I'm speculating which is sort of a no-no) they want to open a can of worms and have multiple configurations of a device that can be handled locally from your ISP. Your ISP provides the modem, you plug it in to Time Capsule and that's that. However if you bought a Apple Time Capsule in the UK I certainly couldn't use it with the modem built in. One I don't need a modem and two it's unlikely to work.
You're correct though I guess it would be nice to have an all in one solution but I doubt you'll get a Time Capsule to do it.
Good luck anyway!! If I hadn't just bought an Airport Extreme I would've gotten Time Capsule as well.

What is the best Wireless Router for ichat

I wonder if anyone can give me any advice from all your experience as to the best Wireless Router I should get in order to use ichat with a minimal setup hassle. I have a G5 and iBook both using Mac OS X 10.4.3 with an external ichat camera. I am based in the UK and use AOL UK on a 2meg broadband connection. Is there a router out there that has easy software to configure?

I use A Linksys WRK54G which is Pack of the Wireless router and a laptop PCIAM (or what erver the name is ) card.
It give me UPnP, Port Triggering and of course good old Port Forwarding.
It gives me 4 ethernet ports as well as Wireless access.
It will handle PPPoE logins if the modem is in Bridge mode.
I have it set to have a Static Address Modem to Router and it is also not doing DHCP And therefore Static to the computer(s).
I would also look at what speed your Internet conection is likely to rise to in the next few years. Some devices can not handle the speeds offered in some places. So make sure it will handle the Uplink and Download speeds you want as well.

Need a new wireless router with switching

I would like to purchase a new wireless router with 4 port switch. I have an Intel iMac with 2 pc's and have spent hours trying to configure my existing Linksys router to work properly and need to make a change. I have not been able to use iChat with Powerbook users and have had other problems as well and have given up...
The recommended router list on the iChat website does not specifically mention wireless routers with 4 port switching...
Does anyone have any suggestions for a router which is easy to use and configure?

If you mean which method of opening the ports should you use for those computers it will be the UPnP setting found in the Adminstarion tab
Log on to the Linksys by typing 192.168.1.1 into a web browser
Type admin as User ID and Password.
Go to Administration
Enable UPnP

WRTP54G (wireless router with phone hookup) with Panasonic network camera BL-C30A (WEP only)

I would like to use this wireless router with WEP so I can access the camera wirelessly (camera only does WEP encryption).
The camera should be the only device allowed to connect to this router wirelessly.
I can dedicate channel 11 so only this wireless router uses it
I know WEP can be cracked but I'm thinking maybe I can setup the router so it doesn't matter, i.e.,
so only the camera can be accessed through this particular router
so my questions are:
1. can I setup the router so only outgoing local LAN http requests are allowed?
2. any other suggestions on router setup that will prevent access to my network?
(using MAC address filtering (for camera mac address only) is worth doing but I guess MAC address can be spoofed so not a complete solution)

Configure WRT54G Wireless Router with PUBLIC IP address and use DHCP for internal computers

Hi,I have an Internet online service with 5 public IP addresses. The router and the AP are connected to a switch. I would like to configure a WRT54G wireless router with one of this IP public Address and use DHCP (with private ip address) for the computers that will connect to the AP. As the AP is connected to the switch it is possible that other wired computers that are connected to the same switch can obtain an IP address from the DHCP ?

After connecte the equipments the way you suggestI setup a static IP address (The public IP) in the WRT54GI enable DHCP in the WRT54G with a range from 10.10.0.100 to 10.10.0.200 (as an example) The gateway is the Public IP address right ? How do I route the 10.10.0.x addresses to the public IP address. Thansk again

Best Wireless router for Macbook?

I currently have a linksys wireless router, which I'm beginning to find out will not support my Macbook in using the wireless airport network I have.
Has anyone used another wireless router (other than Airport/Airbase) that works well and is easy to install for wireless connections?

You asked which is the "best." That would be the Airport Extreme Base Station.
All third party routers should work, and they are all pretty easy to install if you read the user manuals.
You did not tell us what LinkSys model you have, but most of their routers have worked well with Macs. It's possible you may only need a firmware update for the router. Check with LinkSys. Also check with their tech support to see if they have a solution for you.

Wireless router with 3g

We are planning to prepare a demo lab for customer demonstration so that we will carry all these demo lab to customer premises and connect to our UC lab and will show the demo UC features. Equipments would be included in the demo are below:
1. Two video IP Phones
2. Two iPads and Two iPhones
3. One wireless Router (at least two PoE LAN port) with 3g connection.
Plan is, Router will be connected to internet through 3g connecton and configure VPN to our LAB to connect with UC solution. iPad and iPhone will be connected demo voice gateway through wireless and two video phones will be connected through PoE LAN port.
Need suggestion to select the Wireless Router, which model is appropiate for this setup.

Any Cisco ISR Router will do, provided you equip it with a 3G WIC such as :

Performances will depend on the quality of the mobile carrier.
Make sure the Router IOS does support VPN connection.

How do I connect my HP Laserjet 1102w directly to a Linksys AE3500 wireless router with USB option?

I am trying to connect an HP Laserjet 1102w directly to an HP desktop model a172n with Windows Vista Home Premium OS (32 bit) through a new Linksys AE3500 dual band wireless router which has a USB port for a direct connection. The desktop can see the wireless router but not the printer.
Is there a work around, a printer installer update, or some other solution that enables me to connect the desktop to the printer via the USB connection on the wireless router? I need to have one wireless laptop and one non-wireless desk computer able to use the one printer.

Wireless Router with USB + External Hard Drive = Time Capsule?

So I bought a TP-Link WR710N wireless router http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TL-WR710N which seems to support external storage in its USB port. I tried with various storage media and it kinda works. The bad thing is that it only sees NTFS drives. I tried an external hard drive formated for Windows and a USB stick, also formated for Windows and it discovered them. But when I tried my external hard drive which is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which I was using for Time Machine, it couldn't see it. Neither the TP-Link software, nor the Time Machine software.
Is there any way I could use this router with this hard drive for wireless backing up with Time Machine NOT buying extra equipment (NAS, AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule) ?

Take it back and get a Time Capsule or keep it and buy a regular external drive and connect it to the Mac directly.

Best wireless router for MacBook pro

I have a new MacBook pro. I've been online (wirelessly) for weeks but now I can't get online, or if I do, I get kicked off if I try to change pages. We have several iPads which I'm on now, several windows based laptops, and a windows pc. The wireless router is plugged into the pc. Everything but the pc has problems getting online and staying online but now the Mac is the only one that cant. I've reset the router, changed ports, restarted everything so many times I can do it in my sleep. We have D-link as the router. I'm thinking that's the problem but it's only 9ish months old and has been working until now. We have comcast. Help!

I asked one of the workers at Best Buy about wireless routers and he suggested this one or D-Link. As well, he mentioned that it didn't really matter on what brand it was but I trust Linksys since it is with Cisco. I had a Cisco computer before I got into college with a mac.
I ended up buying a Linksys E2000. I live in residence so it made sense for me to get that one. It was an easy set up and really fast. The E2000 is 1 level higher than the E1000. In the beginning the guy suggested the E2000 but I asked if I were to get a higher one, he suggested E2000. It took about maybe 5-10 mins to completely set it up.
