BEST Workflow? MPEG-2 Cutting and preparing for DVD...

Hi all
I am in the process of putting together a showreel. The only way I can get my work on a DVD is to record the DVB-T Stream (its Swiss Television), which Quicktime says is "MPEG2 Muxed, 720 x 540 Pixel" - and it's with 25fps.
Now I'd love to cut those Files in FCP with as high quality as possible and export it for DVD-Studio. If I would not be cutting these files, as I already did last year, there is not much conversion but only demuxing needed to use them in DVD Studio.
But how can I cut those MPEG-2 in FC Studio 2 without much quality degredation?
Whats the best workflow for this?
I read somewhere here in that forum, that I have to convert this into DV, cut it in FCP, and then convert it again to MPEG-2 -- but that sounds like a lot of compression going on...

Thanks for your reply Shawn.
Im aware of the fact that a recompress is not the best way to go. But I don't have any other chance, since a broadcasted signal is already in MPEG-2 and there is nothing I can do about it, this is my only available source. There is no tape for me.
I was basically just wondering if there is something like a smart Compress..say, it only recompresses where there have been changes, between two I-Frames... and evrything els thats unchanged just get copied. that would be the way to go...

    Hi
iMovie'08 & 09 is not the best tools to do a DVD or a DiskImage (via iDVD) from.
You use iDVD to do the DiskImage - but that's when the movie is done.
You can't (at least I can't) do a diskimage first then put a movie into it.
The movie has to be encoded eg .mpeg2 and that's including the rest of the DVD structure too.
No body builds houses - roof first then the supporting walls to end with throwing
in a basement as a last action.
To do a Data-DVD (*not playable in a DVD-player*) is another story.
Just insert the DVD disk and when asked select format.
This makes a DVD-ROM and You can drop movies and other files into this but
when burned (taken out) it's done (one time burn)
Please elaborate on what You want to be the result.
iMovie HD 6 and iDVD'08 or 09 is a very nice combination.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Selling Macbook Pro - How do I safely clean and prepare for buyer?

    Hello!
I am selling my MacBook Pro, and have a few questions regarding that.  If it helps to know in the beginning, I am switching from a Mac to PC (it's a sad day, I know).
The primary one is, of course, how do I safely wipe/clean the hard drive and prepare it for the nest person?  I read something on another forum that I didn't quite understand - maybe it had something to do with the person who started the discussion also wanting to install other software to be included with his Mac (iLife), but the response was to "mount" such and such, replace this name with a generic "admin" or something, etc.  I'm not sure what that was all about.  Any clue?
My next question is, my MBP came with Snow Leopard (?), and I have since upgraded to Lion, and I would like to sell it with Lion installed.  What is the best way to do that without leaving any traces of my Apple ID?
Third and lastly, I think I've successfully transferred all the files I'll be wanting to the computer I'll be using, but any recommendations on other files I should transfer?  Things that aren't personal, obviously.
I've found responses to some of this on the Apple forums, but a lot of it dates back to 2007/2008, and I just want to be sure I'm getting current information.
    Thanks for any help!

The SLA does not permit you to sell the computer with Lion installed. If you do, you will be creating a huge bag of hurt for the buyer. Lion is forever tied to your Apple ID, & the buyer will never be able to update or restore unless they use your Apple ID & Password. You need to erase/format using the original install disk that shipped with your computer, then reinstall SL & deliver to the buyer that way.
Your computer came with two disks: An Install Disk that contains SL, & an Applications Disk that contains the iLife suite. Once you erase/format...Extended Journaled with a single GUID partition, reinstall SL. At the welcome screen, shut the computer down & deliver to the buyer. They can then setup & reinstall iLife.

  • Work-around for lack of cut and paste for files in finder

I am new to Mac and have observed some past but closed discussions about the annoying lack of cut and paste in Finder. I too find it very time-consuming to move a file into the folder where I want it to live - especially from downloads. Using a MacBook Pro 13", my open windows are naturally on top of each other and using drag and drop with a touch-pad for file organisation is very cumbersome. Four finger behaviour on touch pad only helps so far.
The approach I adopt is to use cmd c to copy the files or folders in question. cmd ` to flick between finder windows (usually more than one is open) and cmd v to place the files or folders where I want them after navigating through to the destination folder. Shift cmd N gives me a new folder if required. cmd ` takes me back to source folder (usually downloads) so I can cmd delete the files and keep things tidy. This is lengthy to write down. It is however reasonably quick if your fingers know the keyboard shortcuts.
Is there a more efficient way for me to work around this inhibitory feature of Finder? "Save as" is only good if you know you have a folder in your file structure already created and named and suitable to receive the file you want to file away (usually an attachment to an email).

This is in reply to your last paragraph...
This is the Mac OS default Save As... dialog:
Notice that there is a downward pointing disclosure triangle to the right of the Save As: field. If you click on the disclosure triangle, a full Finder window will be exposed, and this will enable you to place downloaded files wherever you like.
Notice, also, that in the bottom left hand corner of the exposed finder window, you are able to create a new folder (in any location on your system) to which you are able to download files.
This works the same way in any Save As situation, using any app, and the app you are in will remember where you last chose to save a file so that repetitive navigation in these dialog boxes is somewhat reduced.

  • Buy Final Cut Studio 2 for DVD Studio Pro? Pro & Cons of DVD Studio Pro?

I am thinking of buying Final Cut Studio 2 because it includes the DVD authoring software DVD Studio Pro. iDVD uses automatic settings that are hard if not impossible to alter and so some DVDs are authored with very poor bit rates.
    1. Is it possible to change the bit rate manually in DVD Studio Pro so the best Quality DVD can be authored?
    2. Is is possible to change the audio from PCM (which takes up a lot of DVD space) to AC-3 in DVD Studio Pro, so picture quality is improved?
    3. Is there a way to buy DVD Studio Pro as a separate software package and use it with Final Cut Express?
    4. Generally what other options for DVD authoring with Mac are there besides iDVD and DVD Studio Pro?
    5. Is DVD Studio Pro a good piece of software or are there any particular faults?

    1. Yes, but you would use Compressor for your encoding instead of DVDSP.
    2. DVDSP will only encode to AIFF, Compressor will allow you to encode audio to AC3.
    3. Negative. DVDSP is only available as part of Final Cut Studio 2.
    4. You could try using Roxio Toast.
    5. DVDSP gets the job done for me. I think it works quite well.
For a good explanation of how Compressor and DVDSP workflows work within Final Cut Studio, I'd recommend you take a look at DVD StepByStep

  • Best average bit rate & max bit rate for DVDs playing on laptops...

I encode and burn many DVDs for use in regular DVD players....usually in the half hour range and have been encoding with Compressor 3 using these specs:
    6.6 average bit rate
    7.8 max bit rate
Those same DVDs, which play flawlessly in the DVD players, can occasionally hiccup when played from a laptop. Should I change the max bit rate from 7.8 to 7.7. or lower? Is that the biggest part of the equasion that may affect a laptop's ability to play without choking?
    Many thanks,
    John

Thanks for all your help, David S, but the point is
that I have tried many different bit rates, from 4.0
to 7.0, and I don't have time to waste all day trying
different bit rates for an 8-minute project.
My main question is: Why would it work fine on all
of my other short projects, including the 8-minute
one, and then when I cut out 20 seconds of that same
    project, it starts screwing up!?!
I am going to try trashing my preferences. It is
starting to seem like a corrupt pref file to me.
It turned out to be a corrupt pref file, as I thought. Thanks for your many, many questions, David S.

  • Idvd project with video and slideshow for dvd-rom file access

working on an idvd project with both a video section and photos in a few photo galleries. its' a slightly more complex project, but still only 2gb on a 4gb disc. After we burn (with all dvd-rom contents checked, and advance>edit dvd-rom contents shows photo files all there) the finished disc doesn't have files available in the dvd-romcontents! its' driving us mad as simpler projects are burning properly, with both photo and video files available. Could there be some kind of conflict occurring? does anyone have any ideas?!

    Steve,
It sounds like Windows Movie Maker Live was used. The regular WMM will Export to DV-AVI Type I, which will Import into PrPro much better.
I would recommend converting the WMA/WMV to DV-AVI, and Importing that into a DV NTSC (if you are in NTSC-land) Project.
Then, you would use Encore to do the DVD authoring. There are several ways to get the material on your Sequence into Encore. ADL (Adobe Dynamic Link) is probably the easiest way to do this.
What is your exact workflow from PrPro, into Encore?
What brand of blank media are you burning the DVD to?
This ARTICLE will give you some tips.
Good luck, and let us know a bit more,
    Hunt
PS - Multiplexing is the function of combining the Audio and the Video into one file. There are usually two choices, "None" and then often "DVD." For None, you will get two separate files - one for the Audio and one for the Video. With "DVD" you should get a muxed (combined) file. Actually, the separate Audio and Video is the preferred way, if one is doing an Export from PrPro, and then an Import to Encore. One would Import the Video into Encore as a Timeline, and the Audio as an Asset. In Encore, just drag the Audio file from the Project Panel to the appropriate Timeline, where it will snap into place.

  • Unsuccessful at taking wma file and converting for DVD playback

So my wife made a slideshow using Microsoft Movie maker. This program only will save the project for playback on your computer or emailing. So we ended up with a wma file. I took this into Premier Pro then exported to the encoder. I picked NTSC high quality and MPG2-DVD format. I picked dvd for multriplexing although I don't know what that does, I took the mpg quality slider from 4 to 5, and finally changed the audio to dolby digital. I end up with 4 files one is an m2v which I try and burn to dvd using the window burn dvd window but it will only play via my computer DVD drive.

  • Mpeg-2 bitrates and specs for broadcast

Need some advice please for a new "ad server" system I wil be using soon..
    1.Spec preference is for 25Mbps .
Is that achieved via  Target Bit rate or Maximum Bit rate in the AME export settings?
    2. Spec preference is 50i Upper field dominant.
AME does not have that option.
Is 25 Progressive effectively the same?
    3. Spec preference is 4:2:2 (MPEG-2)
No option in AME for that... so what does one do?
    4. Any advice on other MPEG 2 settings GOP N /M frames etc...for best results?
BTW- will be doing a workflow and pipeline test with faciilty.  Just wanted a starting point.

Check this Apple Compressor help section - it contains quite good explanation of GOP.
In regard to best settings for M and N I don't have an unequivocal answer...
P- and B-frames require to store less data than I-frame. Hence, the longer the GOP, the higher the compression (the lesser the file size). That also implies that with the same overall bit rate you can get I-frame of a better quality, 'cos larger fraction of data will be allocated to each I-frame.
On the other hand, longer GOP is more sensitive to data damage, error propagation etc. Not to mention that P- and B-frames are of a slightly worse quality, which results in subtle flickering - have a look at e.g. this AVC-Intra vs H.264 blind test:
According to religious beliefs (see Apple help section above), GOP sequence duration equal to 1/2 second provides balanced compression/stability ratio. Hence Jim's suggestion about N=12. Also repeating P- every other frame with M=2 improves both resistance to data damage and picture quality. Therefore, choosing between Jim's and Joe's suggestion I'd be more inclined to M=2 and N=12 (sorry Joe... )
However, I can be completely wrong. So, happy confusion! (© Joe Bloe Premiere)

  • Avoiding duplicating movies and preparing for FCE

OK so I've approx 16 hours of video I just finished importing into iMovie
Being a ******* only now have I realised that iMovie 11 is very different from the iMovie I got familiar with years ago - v06 HD I think.
So being very familiar with Logic Pro (and knowing how important it is to be organised with hundreds of audio files) and having read lots of articles on the differences between iMovie and FCE I now also realise that if I'm going to bother to learn a new app then it makes much more sense to me to learn FCE than re-familiarise myself with a consumer app. I also remember that back in the day I reinstalled an older version of iMovie cos I loathed the new interface so much!
Anyhow, I have several hundred gigs of iMovie events that I want to use in FCE - though I haven't begun to do anything with them in iMovie
When I import will it copy the dv and audio to a new location so doubling the amount of space I need?
Or will it simply reference the data where it is?
If the latter can I just keep the .mov files and get shot of all the iMovie related stuff?
Essentially I'm looking for tips on how to prepare this large amount of video for most efficient use in FCE
btw Tom Wolsky's book is on order, just looking for some pointers til it gets here!
    cheers all

Hi Tom - many thanks - actually was just reading your FAQ and got to this.
    http://www.fcpbook.com/Video4.html
linked here for others to reference.
Thankfully (I think) the vast majority of the video I've imported into iMovie is HD and so saved/captured as .mov files
This is about 18 hours of movie of a three day seminar I attended and helped to film. I then naively volunteered to edit the video!
There's only about an hour or so of .dv taken with an older camcorder
The problem is (without at the time properly realising the implications) I used this older pre HD camcorder to take some close up shots of practical demonstrations with the intention of inserting sections of this footage with the main film - the other camera being left runnng.
Recapturing this into FCE won't be a problem, but I'm puzzled as to how I'd best  use the two very different formats together? Presumably its parallel to, but more complex than converting a 16bit 44.1kHz audio file to use it within a Logic project running at 24bit 96kHz?

  • The best way to connect wireless and wired for a WRT160N.

It took me about 4 hours to find out how to connect wireless and wired to a network using model WRT160N.  Here is what I have done.  First install the CD when it says there is not connection connect your PC, Modem and router Andy any wireless are wired products, after that do what the linksys advisor tells your which is default.  When it gives you the security key write it down because you will need it for your wireless and wired Products.  Under security mode  type your SDD name and where key 1 is type your security password with was given to you.   Remember all you wireless products have to have the same SDD Like Linsys and all your wired products have to have a different name like Linsys2 but your Key 1 numbers has to stay the same.  That is all you have to do.  Remember that wireless and wired has to be in sequence.  That should do it.

    Hi David Hamilton1;
I guess that all depends on how critical your data is in relation to how much time you want to spend doing the erasure. Those higher level erasure options can take a significant amount of time to complete. Personally I don't have anything on my Mac that I think is worth more time then a simple erasure even if that does leave it some what recoverable. To me it seems some people are going overboard on this issue.
