Beta SP to DVCAM tape transfer - time code

hello all,
I work for a small media training organisation and we've had a production job come in.
Some BETA Sp tapes from a feature will need to be transferred to DVCAM for what I assume is an offline edit. We have a BETA deck and I normally dub to DVCAM using S-Video and Phono Cables.
My question is whether the time code will be carried via the S-Video cable or whether I need an independent BNC cable to carry it.
I did some tests today and the DSR-45 deck seemed to take the time code via the S lead. I set up a BNC cable but couldn't verify whether it made any difference. I imported the captured footage into Canopus Edius and the time code seemed fine but I am worried that the editor may not find it using their as yet unspecified edit software.
Sorry if this seems vague - I have limited information about the job at the moment.
Best wishes,
Paul

Time code does not travel over s-video. You'll need to go tc out of the beta to tc in on the dsr. Make sure the dsrt is set to take external code, or your dubs won't match-- and wrecking any chance of an easy on-line.

  • Capture tape with time code recognition

Hey guys I have a DV footage with alot of cuts that someone put out to DV tape for me. I have to capture it into my FCP. Can I capture and have FCP see the cuts and create clips for each?
I usually capture now or Batch, but would prefer to have FCP see the cuts and save me time.

If they wrote the video in one continuous session, you are out of luck.
FCP uses the time of day difference in the meta data to figure out scene breaks. Video streams written in one chunk (even though they involve lots of scenes) are essentially one scene.
Time to get down and get funky with log and capture.

  • WAITING FOR TIME CODE....again

Hi, when I try to capture from DV device, the capture window appears "PREVIEW DISABLED" I can remote the dv device, mark time code in or out, play tape, pause tape, the time code in the capture window run and is the same taht the tape, but when I do batch capture, cpture clip or capture now, the preview window of catpure says : "WAITING FOR TIME CODE" "DEVICE MUST IN VTR MODE WHEN DEVICE CONTROL IS ENABLED" and when I abort the capture this message apperas: "THIS OPERATION COULD NOT BE COMPLETED AS THERE IS NO VIDEO", Quicktime pro is unabled to capture too, but IMOVIE capture without this problem. I download the firewire sdk from developer connection of apple and use AVCVideo Cap, and no problem for cature, so , my Firewire or dv devices are ok, with DVHSCap I capture PRO HD JVC very well.
Resume , I think there is a problem with quicktime and DV format, My Ibook G4 with FCP 5.0.1 capture from DV devices OK, without problem. If anybody resolved this please comment with us. I work to day with FCP 6.0.4 and quicktime 7.5 and Mac os 10.4.11 and 10.5.4 the problem is afected my PowerPC G5 and my powerbook intel. Another point of interest is that this problem is RANDOM, some times I can capture from DV devices in the first time, some times I can't capture.

    Hey AL
    How ya doin buddy?
"Either way, try an Easy Setup>DV Converter, to match your video standard (Pal or NTSC)."
    Yep - did that
Yes actually my older Sony TVR-310 camcorder IS a digital unit which can also play back analog tapes.
As I'm getting my way around now in FCE, I'm coming to some conclusions in regard to FCE's capture capability.
First let me say that I've also tried capturing some footage in FCE with my other Sony TVR-950, and have had dropped frames, and also breaks in time code.
I thought dropped frames were strictly a PC issue?
Anyway, it appears to me that FCE is VERY sensitive to time code issues NO matter which camera is in the chain.
In fact, I've also read here where folks have a lot of trouble with their Canon GL2's as well. Some of you have even suggested to do your captures in a cheaper Mini DV, or a clam-shell playback machine. This conserves the heads on your GL2 as well.
But why would FCE do better in regard to capturing and time code, with a cheaper Mini DV Camcorder? Perhaps I'm missing something here?
Perhaps iMovie doesn't care about the same issue?
    Now my main question is:
Ok I'll use iMovie6 HD (tried and true), to capture ALL my footage and just save the DV files to be edited later (imported) into FCE.
Does this sound like a viable solution to FCE's time code issues?
Will my iMovie captures be JUST AS GOOD as if they were done in FCE?
    Thanx so much guys!

  • Time code concerns

I want to capture video from mini dv to my external hard drive. I am unable to batch capture because the tape has time code breaks. If I capture the entire one hour tape with capture settings set for non-controllable device (under device control) will it create a new time code.. or will I end up with a quicktime file that has time code breaks in it? If I want to split the one hour tape up into segments divided by date and maintain time code settings so that I can use the tape as a backup if the hard drive crashes... what is the best way to do this? Will splitting one big one hour quicktime file into several smaller ones cause any problems? I'm thinking that the smaller clips will be easier to keyword and find the clip I'm looking for in future projects.
    Thanks!

I'm having difficulty capturing that way from the beginning.. working with tape seems very slow for finding the in and out points as it winds/rewinds .. Batch capturing also isnt working due to inadequate pre-clip time code and/or breaks.. I'm thinking that just setting the tape to run for an hour. and then splitting it up into further clips in quicktime or fcp after is a bit easier to do from the quicktime files..
    1. Im not sure why my transferred tapes comes up with a few breaks.. the tape timecode starts at 0 and ends at 60 so even if I captured with non controllable device and it takes it from 0 to 60 my time code should be correct? If I dont use non-controllable.. where do I set the settings to record a new clip upon finding time code break automatically?
    2. Does assembling a new edited clip by cutting and pasting pieces of larger clips together in either quicktime or fcp maintain the original timecode of the clip from the tape?
    3. Is there a place to locate the date encoded on the film.. I press a button on the camera and it brings up the date, but the date doesnt show on the film, where does fcp record this encoded date info?
    thanks!

  • Time code flicker on DVCAM deck

After setting up a G5 with the previous DVCAM deck that I was using with a G4, I now find that the time code readout on the deck flickers (so badly it's impossible to read) when connected to the firewire port. It appears that the firewire connection with the Mac 'interferes' with the display. It didn't do this with a G4 and FCP 3, but now does with the G5 and FCP HD.
The timecode coming in on capture seems to be ok, as does the time code written to tape when anything is recorded.
Has anyone else seen anything like this and have you discovered a remedy?
My deck is a DVCAM DSR 20.
    Thanks

  • Can't find time code from original footage (captured from mini-DV tape)

Hi. I'm Old to mac, new to FCE, good at iMovieHD ('06). Just got FCE (4.0.1).
Imported some footage (a few random practice clips) from a mini-DV tape I shot, but I can only see the time coding for each clip, not where that clip begins and ends in terms of the entire one hour mini-DV tape.
My log is for the entire mini-DV. So this is a problem.
I suppose I could re-import the entire 60 minute mini-DV tape from the start, but shouldn't the time code be embedded into each frame?
    Help much appreciated.

You can try the free filter FCE Timecode Display with its default settings to display the original timecode of each clip.

  • How to output a file showing visible time code from the source tape

Can someone tell me which settings to use to output a file that has a visible time code readout from the source tape.  I shot an interview and now I want to make a video file for a transcriber so they can include the time code reference numbers from the source video on the written transcript.  Also, does the file need to be output from the timeline, or can this be done directly from a clip in the project.
    Thanks.

    PC with Windows Vista
    Premier Pro CS4

    Hi,
You could try maybe selecting all your clips on the timeline and drag the "timecode" video effect onto it ( type the word timecode at the top of effect panel on left to find it fast )...
Then you can change it from smpte if you want -----to source or media ...something like that...or to 'generate'...use what you like best..
you can also change the codes position in the clip...

  • Capturing Time Code from Beta SP

    Hello,
I am beginning a large project which was filmed in Beta SP. Though I've worked with Beta SP in the past, I've never had to capture time code, so it's never been an issue. I've simply routed the Beta deck's (Sony BetacamSP UVW-1800)video and audio signals through my DV deck (JVC BR-DV600U), which then firewires the video into my edit system. Pretty simple, pretty efficient, but as you know, no time code.
With this new project, I need to record time code, and am unsure as to what the best methods are. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    thanks for the tips, guys.
I'm hoping you may clarify this for me, however (from Shane's link):
"You out from the beta deck via s-video for the video signal, and buy XLR->RCA cabling and go XLR out from the deck to RCA in on the deck or converter, then firewire from the converter to the computer."
    so far so good...
"And if you plug the Keyspan Adaptor to your computer (it is a USB device) then the Mac serial RS422 to that, then to the deck."
plug the Max serial RS422 to my DV deck, or to my Beta deck?
"You also need to be sure that you have a black burst signal being sent to the beta deck into the REF IN port."
I'm not sure what this means.
Again, thanks for the help. I've become so used to working with digital formats that I feel a little lost when older formats come into the picture.

  • Can FCP7 Regen Time Code when capturing from tape to allow for TC Breaks?

Can FCP7 Regen Time Code when capturing from tape to allow for TC Breaks? Or does it start capturing with time code from the tape and then just keeps rolling regardless of TC breaks on the tape, thus not matching code after the first TC break?  I don't see any preferences where you can ask it to regenerate the code  it is writing based on the code it's receiving from the tape (i.e. continuous jam). I'm guessing it just keeps on going with the code it started with. Anyone know different?
    Thanks!

It is not clear from your post what you want FCP to do when it encounters the timecode break on the tape that it is ingesting.
    You have three choices:
If you choose "Make New Clip" then FCP will stop, roll the tape forward to legitimate code, and then attempt a pre-roll and start capturing again. The new clip will have timecode that corresponds to the timecode on the tape.
If you choose "Warn After Capture", FCP will keep ingesting and the timecode will continue contiguously from the source code of your starting clip, meaning it won't match the tape after the point of the break.

  • Dealing with time code breaks on the source tape

Some of my source tapes have broken time code, because of "empty space" between recordings. What's the best way to deal with that if you want to be able to automatically recapture video from a tape?
    Thanks.

There are a few possible solutions depending on what you need from the tapes.
You can dupe the whole tape onto another camera or deck (via firewire), or use capture now to grab the whole tape. You'll need to edit the preferences to only warn on timecode breaks, and not create new clips at breaks.
You could also set the FCP capture controls to be a 'non-controllable device', this means you need to hit play on the deck and use 'capture now' in the log and capture window. The only problem with this is that the timecode is not from the tapes, it is generated by FCP to fix the breaks, so batch re-capturing won't work (bad news if the breaks mash up the audio etc).
Duping the tapes can be done by using just one camera and your mac. Capture via the 'non controllable' device method above. Then drop the footage into a sequence and then print that to tape. Then use this tape to capture from & you have footage that will recapture at a later date if needed.
Timecode is a real pain if you have many breaks, duping is often the easiest solution.

  • Time code slowly drifting when printing to tape

I have noticed that my time code is drifting a bit when I print to tape, it gets more noticeable the longer the video i need to print is. Why would it do that?

Well, both should be set to drop frame then....by default. Go to the SEQUENCE>SETTINGS and see if DROP FRAME is checked next to the STARTING TC in the TIMELINE OPTIONS tab.

  • .Cannot write rc time code on recorded tape CCD-TRV81

I tried to write the rc time code on a recorded tape (p.54 in manual) as the engineers took away this feature of date stamping, & it did not work. What is the purpose of this? Is it supposed to automatically ff to the next day?
I pressed time code write & let it play to the end of the tape.
Rewinded & played when done, & nothing was there.
Sonys browser would only let me post this on tablet, would not go to camcorder forum

  • Smpte time code off in FCP X - LPX xml transfer

    Hi Folks
I noticed that, having exported an xml file from FCPX, that if I open the xml file in Logic the smpte time code reads 00:50:03:00 no matter what the video clip or project I export. IF I open one of my personal Logic templates then import the xml, the timecode is correct, starting at 00:00:00:00. Huh.
I reported this to logic feedback and am offering this observation for other users who may have the problem.

    Hi Tom
29.97 in FCPX and Logic asks me if I want to change it from 25 to 29.97... that's kinda odd too. The work around is just open xml file from FCPX after opening a new project. Only is a problem when Logic starts up and I choose OPEN and go directly to the xml file and open.

  • Source Tape Time Code Capture

Is Final Cut Express HD 3.5 capable of capturing the source time code over firewire?

No, but you can reveal it with Piero's Time Code plugin which you can find here along with some other goodies:-

  • Edirol r44 time code import

    Hello
I just bought an Edirol r44 recorder because it has the time code option or as mention time of the day option. I made sure to use BWF in the system setup which seems to record these information as far as some tips I read online. I tried to import it to Premiere, but the time code didn't show and I only got the default time which is zeros. I tried Avid Media Composer and it showed under start time instead of Avid default time which is 01:00:00:00.
Is there's any option or plugin I'm missing here?
    Thanks

Your best bet would to transfer all that non-timecoded footage to a source that is timecoded. So if you are working with DV, transfer all your VHS and DVD and other formats to DV tape, then use THAT as your master.
Because if you lose a drive and you have a lot of non-timecoded footage in your edit, then your work is gone. You'll have to recut. I transfer everything that needs TC.
