Better Cooling for STOCK Intel i7 930

The Intel i7 930 comes with cooling http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115225 which is probably OK
But, even though I am NOT going to overclock, I am going to use PPro CS5 which is CPU intensive for AVCHD, so want better cooling
I don't think I need (nor can my miniscule budget afford) a "monster" $100 CPU cooler... but I can manage one for $50 or less
So... has anyone used any of these... and comments?

Again... NO overclocking

John,
I have similar setup: i7-930 and Cooler Master case (mine is CM 690series).
I used originally the Intel's stock heatsink. It is ok for work with .avi files
but you will run into high temps (80C) when you start working with AVCHD content.
The CPU comes under heavy load during encoding of avchd files in progs like Cineform, for example.
All 8 cours run at 100% in such applications and the temps go up. Although Intel say that the CPU
can sustain up to 120C it is not recommended to run it for prolong intervals of time above 75C as this will shorten its life.
In short, after reading tons of CPU coolers' reviews I ended up installing XIGMATEK S1283V http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233029(which is on your list).
This is a German engineered cooler produced in Taiwan. I'm very satisfied: well manufactured, solid,
silent (compared to Intel stock cooler) and easy to install. My idle temps remained the same (around 40C) but
my temps under max load dropped to 68-70C.
I used Arctic Silver 5 paste.
Hope this helps.

  • Better?? Stock chipset cooler or Vantec IceBerg on Neo 2 Plat

In your experience as I am hoping not to have to remove my mobo to try this and find out my stock msi chipset cooler cools better than my vantec iceberg.
What do you ppl think is a better cooler??

Yeah I know it will fit and is just marginally larger.  I test fitted it when I first got the mobo from newegg.  And its not like its alot of trouble getting the mobo out of the case.  I am just lazy.  All I do all day long is work on other ppls computers.  I kinda like just coming home and having a computer that works.  But lately my computer room has been getting warmer and if I restart my computer I will get bsod's in x64 v1433 with error "Page fault in non paged area"  And I go into bios and the chipset temp is 42'C  To me that is just way to hot.  I have pleny of cooling inside the case and ie; 6 80mm fans and a Arctic Cooling freezer 64 on the 3200+.  But I am wondering if maybe it is due to memory overheating.
I did just take my memory down from 2.85v to 2.55 and it works just fine.  So maybe that is my trick.
Also I did remove the stock hs and put some as5 under it and that lowered my temps by about 2'C

  • Overclocking an Intel i7 930

In the search for better performance I am interested in overclocking my Intel i7 930 processor. I would very much appreciate any guidance as to the process and steps which need to be taken to increase the speed while still being stable.
    My System:
    MB: Asus P6X58D-E
    CPU: Intel Core i7 930 2.8GHz
CPU FAN: Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler
    RAM: 12GB (6 x 2GB) Corsair Dominator DDR
    Graphics: 1.28GB Asus GTX 470 3.3GHz
    Case: Coolermaster ATCS 840
    Many thanks.

Thanks Harm.  I read that thread and several other guides.  I'm still trying to get my head around what needs to be changed.  There are so many options and many of them have different names, so following them through the different guides is difficult.
I did find someone who had posted the details of what BIOS items they'd changed for the same MB and CPU, which I tried.  I did boot into Windows and run the Prime95 TortureTest for about 5 mins before I decided that although it was working and the temperatures were fine, I really felt that I needed to find out more about what settings I need before committing to keeping it overclocked.  It was running at 3.5GHz.
I'd like to get the CPU close to 4GHz, however as I won't be using the full power of the processor all the time I'd like to keep some power saving features, like SpeedStep.
If anyone has the same motherboard, processor and memory that I do and would like to share their overclocking settings or experience, I'd very much appreciate it.

  • After market chipset cooler for NEO (PLAT)

o as im typing this im runing 44c CPU and 45c chipset dose any ond else have this prob one this borad and i dont what to wast money if the chipset cooler dont clear my 9800 card and HSF and ive got a Artec cooling After market cooler so it is realy close to the chipset cooler... so has anyone put an after market HSF on there chipset

I just posted this in the other Northbridge fan thread but I'll post it again:
Well I just recently built a new pc with an MSI K8N Neo Platinum and have been browsing these forums for awhile... I've also been looking into actively cooling the NB because from previous experience with my Xbox, Nvidia NB's run fairly hot... I was thinking about getting one of those Vantec coolers but I dont really like the hole thing where the fan is built into the heatsink (personally I don't think it is very efficient)... So I was trying to find some other ways to cool the chip and found that any 40mm fan will fit on the heatsink, but the stock gold heatsink was too tall and if I put a fan on it would interfere with my Radeon 9800Pro with an Arctic Silencer cooler... So I came across this:
    http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=291975&pfp=srch1
The heatsink is shorter plus it comes with a 40mm fan so I think it would fit perfectly on the NB (I have one of these chipset coolers in my Xbox and am very pleased with it)... I think that combined with some Arctic Silver 5 will definately perform a lot better than the stock gold POS... I will be picking one of these up shortly at CompUSA and will let all you guys know how it goes along with some pictures... Hope this helps...
Here are some pics of the kit and of it placed on the NB in my Xbox:
As you can see the heatsink that comes with it is indeed a little shorter and should help those of you with larger video cards that have problems fitting an NB cooler... I also have an arctic silencer on my vid card and I'm almost 100% sure this would fit as I was able to fit my finger inbetween the card and the NB heatsink and the fan is about the same width as my finger...

  • Logic needs a better integration for hardware sinthesizers like Emagic - SoundDiver was!

I work with a community of about 50 logic users in Germany and nearly all of them love to use some of the old hardware machines from Roland, Korg, Akai and so on.
In the past there was a program from Emagic called "SoundDiver". Sound Diver was a program who integrated all well known hardware synthesizers in to logic that a logic user was able to edit (with read, write, automation!!) the programs and sounds in SoundDiver and Logic.
SoundDiver was the bridge between Logic and the hardware synthesizers. Especially for the old hardware with midi function was SoundDiver the best program on the market to integrate your hardware in to logic.
The most important point was that SoundDiver did all this great work by saving time for us as Logic user.
Our Logic User community agrees that Logic Studio 10 needs a better integration for hardware Synthesizers and especially for the old ones. SoundDiver was the best feature for this.
Apple: Please integrate the Sound Diver in to Logic 10!!! You will see, all professional and semi professional users will love it and you will have a big benefit in comparison to Cubase and ProTools.
The current way to work with logic and hardware synthesizers needs to much time and it is not ideal.

Sound diver was really cool, but it's not working in modern OS. If Apple will try to add it's functionallity , it has to rewrite this soft completely. But even in this case they could not support a big variety of old hardware. I would be happy if I have a little bit more functions in external midi instrument track. I also tried to replace Sound Diver with MIDI Quest AU plugin, but it does not work well with my old Virus.

  • Recommended workflow-way to manage exports for stock sites

    Dear All,
Is there an efficient workflow - way that someone came up with, that could recomend to manage exports for stock site photography easily?
The main problem, is that if you upload 10 images for instance, to 3 different sites you most propably will face different accepted images and different rejected from each site.
Then you have to modify adjustments to reupload the rejected images for a second try, or even a third one.
And this is the exact point where the problem occures.
There must be an efficient way to have in different folders (or smart albums or whatever)  the same images with different status (rejected or accepted for instance, or red or green or whatever) and at the same time those images with differenet settings (those you had to make in order to get images accepted) keep also in mind that the images may also have different keywords aswell (in case an image gets rejected due to keywording).
Its important to  mention that in the end, the folders must match the real status of the images at the stocksite submitted, regarding state (accepted or not) and of course settings.(its important in the end to know that in  site ''A'' you have exactly those images and in site ''B'' the others, and so on.)
Its more than sure that those 3 different folders (or smart albums or whatever) will eventually have the same images, but most of them will have different status, settings and keywords.
The only way i found to manage it, is by creating export folders using virtual copies at the publish services section of LR. Note that for publish services i used my hard drive.
But the drawbacks of this way are:
    1. You double - triple (depending the stock site number) files (at least they are virtual ones)
    2. When an image is rejected from a stock site and you mark the coresponding image as ''marked for republish'' even thow in lr it is clear which files were rejected and should be edited and republished, in the export folder you cant track them, you must export to a new folder evry time creating double - triple jpg files. I think it would be better if LR could sync automaticaly  the folder showing somehow images marked for repubplish.
Sorry for long post, but how could it be smaller????
    Thanks in advanced.
    Vasilis

The point of Publish is not that the image disappears afterwards, but that it remains there afterwards, after moving between the categories into which the publish window is divided. IIRC you can collapse the parts you are not interested in... (?) I don't have LR in front of me just now. Pictures then move categories again, the moment you make further changes. It's an ongoing relationship between the Catalog and the publish location, and you use Publish when this is what you want.
It is not very easy AFAICT to terminate this relationship, using the built-in Publish function, without also marking the externally published file for removal. However some 3rd-party LR plugins offering a Publish facility, can do this for you cleanly.
Personally, I have concluded that the standard one-off (but repeatable, via named preset) Export inherently meets my needs better than Publish does, for this very reason - and have therefore ducked fully dealing with this Publish life-cycle issue. So often, a change is made to an image which is not really substantive and does not justify re-publishing.
But I definitely suggest looking into plugins, if you like the idea of Publish but find it restrictive currently, including (in no particular order and not comprehensive)

  • LP2475 - best colour calibration settings for stock photography

Hi - I have just purchased the LP2475 and am new at colour calibration.  The general colour seems very over saturated.
I am mainly using the monitor it to do 2 main things :
    1) using lightroom / pshop and adjusting photos that will be available online for stock photography purchasing.
    2) using lightroom /pshop and adjusting panos to print via 2 out-of-house print companies.
I understand that I have to buy a colour calibration device and I will make up custom printer profiles for the 2 different companies where I get my photos printed (one is a canvas & one is a photo printing company).
However, the issue lies in what general calibration settings I should have in lightroom / pshop for my stock photos - because once sold, they will be printed on all various types of printers, and viewed through various types of monitors - most not calibrated.  So what are good general settings.     It seems very over saturated with colour, and I cannot actually seem to adjust the saturation in the button menu on the monitor as this setting is greyed out.
    Thanks
    Lucy

    I recently bought a Spyder2Pro, which was
    recommended
by Scott Kelby, Editor of Photoshop User Magazine,
and am very happy with it. The main difference
between Spyder2Pro and Spyder2 are multiple
    monitor
support and more choices for monitor gamma and
tempereature settings. Since I use multiple
monitors, I went for Spyder2Pro, although it was a
bit more pricy (got it for $189 at JR.com). All
    my
monitors were calibrated very quickly and I was
amazed how much difference the tool made. If you
have one monitor to calibrate, I think Spyder2
    would
be fine (it was $89 at JR.com a few days ago).
One hint with the multiple monitor thing is that on
the Mac, all of these tools just end up generating an
ICC profile that gets assigned to your monitor.
What that means is that they all actually support
multiple monitors, just not all automatically... for
the ones that do not know how to select displays, you
can just move the menu bar to whatever screen you
wish to profile and the software should create a
    profile for that screen.
I use the EyeOne and like it a lot. But any hardware
    calibrator is better than none.
As a side note, I think using a color temperature of
65k for the monitor and a gamma of 2.2 is really a
good setting to use with any calibrator.
    Svendo,
I fully support the comments in this post but still prefer the GM Eye 1. Dont try to do the job with your eye. 99 times out of 100 you will be way off the mark.

  • Additional Cooling for QS 2002

Sometimes a friend of mine, who manages an Apple reseller, will get old Macs handed to him that are bound for the recycler. I have an arrangement with him that he'll email me if he gets anything that he thinks I might be interested in/be wanting a chance to scavenge before he recycles them. The other day the emailed me saying he had two G4 towers that I might be interested in so I went down to his store to check them out.
When I got there I discovered they were both QuickSilvers, one a 2001 867MHz single processor and the other a 2002 933MHz single processor. The thing that caught my eye on the 933 was that the video card didn't have an ADC port, but it did have DVI, VGA and an S-video port. Not a stock card, I thought and the S-video port was intriguing enough to warrant further investigation. I opened the case, wishing for a Radeon 9800 Pro, and when I eyeballed the card I still couldn't tell what it was, though I knew it was far too big to be a 9800 Pro; in fact it was the biggest video card I had ever seen inside a G4. So I popped the card out of the AGP slot and found that it was a BFG GeForce 6800GT OC. I also found I had a big grin on my face.
Since the card was resident inside a Mac QuickSilver 2002 I was ready to assume it had already been flashed for a Mac, but just to firm up my assumption I grabbed a magnifying glass and started to closely examine the pins. Sure enough, #3 and #11 pins were taped and my grin was even bigger…
An hour later I had both QuickSilvers home and was busily removing the 933MHz processor from the 2002 and replacing it with an OWC 1.5GHz Mercury Extreme processor which, up till then, resided in my GigaBit Ethernet G4. After transplanting the HDs from the GigaE and resetting the cuda switch I was ready to fire up the QS 2002.
The startup chime was music to my ears and shortly after I had video…the 6800GT worked/works like a charm with absolutely none of the pain, anxiety and neuroses that are associated with acquiring, flashing and taping PC video cards for use in a Mac…
My question is, what with the Mercury Extreme processor upgrade (the 7455 G4 is not exactly a cool running processor) and the 6800GT together in fairly close proximity, should I be concerned about/consider additional cooling for the QuickSilver and if so, how would I go about doing that as expeditiously (and cheaply) as possible?
    Happy happy, joy joy…
    Bill

    Thanks for your response, Japamac.

    Hi-
Did you remove the old CPU fan?
I did and have it here sitting in front of me though for the life of me I can't remember what I did with the screws…no worries, I'll find them…
I kept mine, with a 2 GHz processor in a 2002 QS, turning it around so as to exhaust hot air.
    It helps a bit.
    Great idea…never thought of that.
I was toying with the idea of replacing the 867MHz processor in the 2001 QuickSilver with the 933… Maybe not though…seems like too much work for such a small gain in processor speed and the CPU fan on the 867 may not be the same.
I'd like to install OS 9.2.2 on the 2001 QuickSilver and use it to play all the old Classic games that I've collected over the years. I have a Radeon 9000 Pro that I scavenged out a MDD with a bad mobo that I could put in the 867 QS. I'm reasonably sure the 9000 Pro is the fastest video card that will still support 3D Graphic Acceleration in OS 9.
Keep the 6800 clean. That's the most important thing with that card.
I examined the 6800 closely before I put it back in the QS 2002. It was in very good shape and looked like it was brand new out of the box. And clean enough that I would consider eating a meal off of it…maybe…

Thanks OSXFreak, that's also a great looking case.
The case I bought is the Otterbox Defender.  It was about a toss up between the Otterbox and the Case-Mate Tough Case that I saw using the link from OSXFreak and I can't say one is better than the other.  I bought the Otterbox mainly because I found it in a store locally and I'd read good reviews on it so I grabbed it.  I work on the water and on steel decks, another reason for buying the Otterbox however I think I'd like the Tough Case as well.
    Thanks for the help guys.

  • Encoder optimized for mac intel?

Flash 8 video encoder on current mac machines with intel

Has anyone done perfomance tests with the new encoder? mac
intel for now is not mentioned anywhere on Flash CS3 product

I've just downloaded the flash cs3 trial to try out the new
    encoder.
Although it looks like it is intel (you can use flv.component
with intel quicktime pro/final cut export) it is only using one
    core.
I did a quick test of a 2 min 720p hd file and it took more
than 15 minutes to encode. CPU was only showing 1 core active, that
was on 2ghz core 2 duo. Ill try it later on a G5 but if its not
using the other cores I cant see it being much better.
I was hoping it would be faster, i've tried ffmpeg &
    thats no better.
Anyone tried through parallels - is windows quicker?

  • Need extra cooling for Qosmio x875! Surprised?

I'm looking for a laptop cooler and/or vacuum cooler for my Qosmio x875. I am currently considering the CM SF-19 and the CM Notepal X3. Which one is better for the Qosmio x875? I couldn't find exact specs on the Qosmio airflow, so I am loathe to simply make a judgement based on what I can guess.  I've already reapplied thermal paste and that brought my motherboard and CPU down from 100°C down to 75°C during maxed out gaming. A significant improvement, but still a bit too hot for my tastes, which is why I'm looking for extra coolers.  Any suggestions?

    Hello Tom
Maybe you should simple clean up your notebook, or be sure your notebook is placed properly on the desk.
You can also put something under back side to make more distance between the desk and your laptop. I have placed two small books (about 1 cm) to allow better air circulation.
