Better cpu for Premiere?

Hello - I'm upgrading computers and have a tough choice to make on CPU. A friend has access to a crazy sale where his job is selling "last years" workstations off at a huge discount.
I can afford either the somewhat "base" model in the 8 core HP's - an 8 core xeon based setup with dual e5405's @ 2.0ghz, 1333 fsb & 12mb cache. Or I can go another route that would get me a Dell workstation with the core 2 duo q6850 in it now, which is 1333 fsb/4mb cache @ 3.0ghz.
I'm wondering which of those 2 would be better for HD editing in Premiere. I'm having a hard time finding benchmarks that compare the two, and what really threw me were the sys requirements for Premiere - they mention "2GHz or faster processor for DV; 3.4GHz for HDV; dual 2.8GHz for HD"
hard to tell where an 8 core xeon @ 2ghz falls within this.

My main question is more the classic ghz vs ghz argument, where I know well and good all chips are not created equal. Does anyone have any experience with the 8 core 2ghz system and editing HD content? Does it perform ok and have enough throughput to keep up with higher clock speed cpus?

I would be wary of Dell. Just the other day - in another thread - someone found out that the Bios in the Dell he has is crippled and does not allow overclocking. His only way to improve speed is to get a faster processor at enormous cost.
A quad core is not enough if you want to edit AVCHD. A dual Xeon E5405 HP was an entry level workstation.
My guess is that for around the same amount you can build your own i7 system, that will blow both systems out of the water.

Look specifically at positions 10 and 11 and at positions 18 and 19. That will show you clearly that a good i7 system can be better or equal to a dual Xeon.

Limited comparison between an i7 and a dual 5410 shows the i7 to be significantly faster (depending on the test between 1.5 - 3 times).

What is the best cpu for Premiere Pro and autocad?

I am considering these three cpu's. My build has to run Premiere Pro CS6 and the latest Autocad (I know this a Adobe forum, but if any out there also run Autocad in addition to PP...let me hear from you and what your build is).
I am PP hobby enthusiast/student/want to eventually have video postproduction company in future. Right now autocad is 'bread and butter' part-time.
These three are in my price range...which would you choose for PP and why? (side comments about autocad suitability also appreciated)

Note that AutoCad is not an avanced software, it only uses one cpu thread (so if you have a fast solo processor that's all AutoCad makes use of) but the cpus mentioned above are the fastest cpus per single core. I don't know about the Premiere Pro i.e. what this program does in the regard of utilizing all cores and threads, but AutoCad for sure does not. So an AutoCad machine only needs a fast CPU, good memory and a graphics card that AutoCad knows how to make use of in 3D (if you are using AutoCad for 3D) but AutoCad is definitely not the program to consider for use in 3D modeling. AutoCad is still vector based program (and probably will continue to be in future, since there will always be some need for vector based design software) but Autodesk does have software that is not vector based like Inventor.

Apple, Mac Pro, Amd vs Nvidia with cuda? Why, and what to buy for Premiere Pro?

Mac Pro has dual Amd video cards installed, and does not offer Nvidia cards with Cuda in this line up, as far as I can tell. The iMacs offer nvidia cards which seem a better choice for Premiere Pro which uses the cuda rendering capabilities. Which would be best for Premiere Pro? The quad Mac Pro, or the top of the line iMac with double the ram, say 32gigs vs 16 in the Mac Pro? Why did Apple put AMD cards in the Mac Pro line?

CPU requirement for Premiere Elements 10?

Hi there,
Unfortunately, I think I know the answer to this already, but thought I'd toss this out there to see if anyone has gotten it to work.
On a Windows XP sp3 PC with a 1.86ghz Core2 6300 CPU with 2gb RAM, I'm unable to install Adobe Premiere Elements 10. When I run setup.exe I get "This installation package is not supported by this processor type. Contact your product vendor."
The system requirements for Premiere Elements 10 do list a 2ghz CPU with SSe2 support. The Core2 6300 does support SSe2, but runs at 1.86ghz not 2ghz.
Just haven't seen a program actually refuse to install based on CPU speed before. Guess I've been lucky. But can anyone confirm that the installer actually won't install on a slower processor speed. Not sure what else the error could be than this.

I know about the min specs. The reason I'm asking if it really checks the CPU speed is I have a school that *is* running Premiere Elements 10 on the exact same hardware. Same CPU. The only difference is the new version I'm trying to install is the volume license version, part of the Adobe Digital School collection. The school that already has it running is using Premiere Elements 10 with either separate licenses or some other license setup. So it doesn't make sense why it worked but doesn't now.
Testing today. On my test PC, a Core 2 6300 XPsp3, the setup would start up OK using the non-VL installer, but fail when I tried to use the setup.exe from the new installer. As far as I know the program is the same, but I don't think I can do the XML customizations needed to do a silent installer on the non volume licensed version of Premiere Elements 10. In short, why does one version of PE 10 install but not the other?

I tried doing a google search and a forum search and came up empty. The presets that come with elements are nice, but really basic when compared to the competition (corel for example). I was wondering if there are more presets available from adobe, fellow forum members, or freeware websites. Any one else have any suggestions?

I'd like the letters to "explode" away. As in each letter individually flies into the screen as if there was an explosion behind it.
I'd also like the letters to roll in on screen then roll out.
It would be super nice if there was a true way to edit the text. Heck there might even be and I'm just missing it.
It would be nice if there was a section on adobe's website that offered downloadable text animation presets, audio, and video effects. I see a lot for photoshop elements but none for premiere elements (unless I happen to be looking in the wrong place).

Mac vs. PC for Premiere Pro CC with a budget of...

$3300.00 ... That's what I'm budgeting.

I know any post of Mac vs. PC can spark a lively debate and I sense much of this forum's base are PC users but hopefully I'll get some honest and sound advice/purchase options.
Purpose:
I'm a current Mac user not wanting really to go back to PC but I'm about to make a purchase so I wanna be open to the idea if it's gonna make life better for me while editing. As crazy/stupid as it sounds...my fear of returning to the PC world is mostly because of my memory of the years of having to deal with the need for Virus Protection on a PC. I have bad memories from having to renew/pay for that every year and it slowing things down and ultimately my last PC was infected and crashed. But my editing is what I do 6 days a week on this computer for work. I used to be a FCP user so Macs made sense but now I'm all in on Premiere Pro CC so maybe a PC would be best...or maybe I should just stay with Mac. Who knows?! Bottom line: I use Premiere, Audition, Encore and Photoshop with 90% of it on Premiere (using basic cuts, cross dissolves, extensive use of Warp Stabilizer, and the occasional gaussian blur). I also use this computer to go online. That's about it. Mostly.
Current State:
I have a 2011 iMac with a 27" screen. Love that size. It has 3.4 GHz i7, 16GB 1333 RAM, AMD 6970M 1GB VRAM GPU, 120GB SSD (OWC 6G) running the OS and apps, and I also have a Elite Pro Dual eSata HDD + Thunderbolt adapter (RAID 0) from MacSales.com that I currently use as my scratch drive.
Option #1:
I was just about to purchase the newest iMac with most of the upgrades for what would be $3300. The upcoming 2013 Mac Pro looks nice and I love the idea of being able to upgrade as I go, but it doesn't come with a screen and I can't necessarily afford it when you add that in. Plus it doesn't come out for a couple months and honestly I have a great offer in right now on my iMac that I'm about to sell.

I truly have been out of the PC world sooo long and I know that each "side" has their advantages. I love Mac but I'm just wanting to get the best machine for Premiere for my budget. I've been a loyal mac user for years but I'm no fan boy (eg. I happily own a Galaxy S3 by choice) I was excited to get the newest iMac released just a couple weeks ago but then tonight I saw this site (http://pcpartpicker.com/) and started thinking about my options.
I will be selling my 2011 iMac to help pay for the new one so I can't keep this one. That money has factored into my budget. It's been great but I feel like it drags and hangs with MPE enabled sometimes so I figured a newer computer would help.
Also...SSD. I have read great things from various posts about the Samsung 840 Pro SSD's so I may pick one or two up eventually to supplement or replace my current scratch drive.
I'd love someone to toss out if I should go option #1 or if there's a better Option #2 out there.

I'm just picking things that sound nice outside of what you had for your "Low-End Warrior Setup". Like I said before, I totally guessed on the type of RAM (brand? 1600 vs 1866? etc), the Case (all I knew was to get a Full Tower), the OS (8 vs 8.1 vs. 32bit vs 64bit), and the monitor (comparible to iMac's 27" monitor?) and other things like sound cards and wireless network adapters (of which I may not need apparently). Also, I switched the GPU to the GTX 770 because it's listed on Adobe's supported cards list. Not that the 760 wouldn't work but maybe this one "future proofs" it a bit more and plus most of the footage we handle is 60fps edited and exported at 24fps so according to that Tweaker's link above, a great GPU help. It does have 4GB VRAM instead of 2gb so I don't know what difference that makes but I figure its better. As for "brand" I took a wild guess and went with Gigabyte, not sure if that's good or not. FYI: By comparison the iMac I'm debating has a GTX 780M GPU with 4GB VRAM. You tell me if this was smart. Still under budget.
So many questions remain. cc_merchant, feel free to lay out your wisdom and help me shape my purchase based on what you know. I like hearing things like "don't need that" or switch it out for "this one" instead. If it goes over $3300 by a touch (not too much), that's okay as long as it's gonna be THAT much better than the spec'd out 2013 iMac listed above.

New System Build For Premiere 5.5 Looking For Advice

Hi there, this is my first time on here and it looks like this is the best place for advice.
So I've been tasked to build a new computer for a client for Premiere 5.5. He's running a very basic studio setup and his main complaint is how it takes
such a long time to render video. He told me it takes him about 6 hours to render a 40 minute sequence to MPEG2 standard(this is what he mostly renders as). I did some playing around and it turns out that his current system is relatively good but it uses a HD 6990 as its GPU(which can't even take advantage of Premier's hardware rendering capability!)
Now initially I was going to go the all SSD route with a a budget of about $2500 or so. However, after doing some reading on here, I've decided that this
isn't necessarily the best way. So I will only run the OS of an SSD. Here is what I have so far:

Now if there are any suggestions, PLEASE let me know how I can improve this build. I really don't want to disappoint the guy, especially if he isn't going to get a great performance boost in terms of rendering time. Considering he can't use GPU acceleartion right now on his $600+ card, I would imagine this should be a better build.
Also, will there be a problem if I run four hard drives in RAID 0 mode using the motherboards onboard RAID capability?

I think you are on the right track to speed up this guys system (2600k w/ OC, dual RAID 0) and I second Harm's comment about large 7200 drives being better than the prev. generation VR 300GB drives (HLFS series).
Be aware however that "rendering" does mean different things, and if you are thinking that MPE will increase AME rendering to MPEG2-DVD by 10x you will be very disappointed! Here is the rest of the story...
Timeline rendering, as benchmarked in PPBM5, will indeed speed up on the order of 10x with the addition of MPE using the appropriate nVidia hardware. PPBM5 is a test carefully constructed test that represents how long it takes for Adobe Premiere Pro to prepare (render) a timeline for playback. In actual use, your results will vary. Some timelines may only be sped up by 2x (i.e. very complex and/or using non-MPE effects, filters, etc.) to more than 1,000,000x faster for the case where a non-MPE system requires rendering, whereas the MPE system can play back the timeline without ANY rendering (i.e. simple SD timelines with MPE compliant effects).
Next, full timeline rendering and "exporting" from a Premiere Pro timeline to MPEG2-DVD format are both sped up, but more on the order of 2x. On my fast quad-core system, I'm getting about a 1.8x improvement from MPE assistance using the PPBM5 project for testing.
Finally, using Adobe Media Encoder (AME), and I can only speak for CS5, the MPE hardware does not even come into play and does not speed things up at all. On a positive note, Harm has reported that AME ver. 5.5 ran just over 2x as fast as ver 5.0.3; possibly the newer version is in fact tapping the MPE hardware for this gain?

Want to build a video editing machine for Premiere Pro CC

I will only be using this machine for Premiere pro CC.I would like you guys to have a look at the specs I have chosen,give your suggestions:

The new Haswell E CPU is out now. THAT is what you want for a new editing machine. ESPECIALLY for heading into the future, which will involve 4K and other, maybe more DEMANDING codecs. SEE Eric Bowen's posting here on this forum regarding the test results for video editing using the Haswell E...vs. the older CPUs.
The Haswell E now has a new chipset,( X99), that brings MANY new features, AND, the Haswell E NOW features "quad channel" memory...to handle large amounts of data FASTER. The new motherboards have TEN SATA III ports, for a variety of HIGH SPEED storage options !! The OLDER motherboards are LIMITED to TWO SATA III ports.....PREVENTING creating FAST onboard RAID setups. The Haswell E is available with EIGHT,or, SIX cores...you choose !! Use at least 32 GB of system memory. Soon, Eric will post the results of the new Nvidia 970 and 980 video cards. in his video editing test. The 980 is ALREADY the top card in GAMING...BEATING the 780ti, DESPITE having LESS data throughput. The 980 MAY be the card you want....it is MUCH cheaper than the 780ti......down in the $500 plus range.
Use the new Samsung 850 Pro SSDs in your new system...or, the cheaper Crucial M550 series SSDs. The SSDs are now WAY more reliable than HDDs and are WAY FASTER, in many ways.

Intel 2011 - 3930k - Great choice for premiere ?

Hi guys,
I'm planning on upgrading my system, and am looking at the Intel 2011 chips, specifically the 3930K.
Does anyone have any experience with this cpu chip ? and do you recommend it ? Also, I'm not even sure if Adobe Premiere, AE, etc,
utilize 6 cores at the moment, this could play into my decision also.
I won't be upgrading my sytem for some time, after upgrading to this chip, etc. I plan on putting 32 gb of memory onto the
new motherboard too which should help greatly over my current 8 gb of ram on my current system.
video card will be the Nvidia 680.
Is this a good, intelligent choice for Premiere ? or am I wasting my money, and a less expensive chip would be better suited ?
something that uses the Z77 motherboard.
I have conflicting info from vendors I talked with yesterday, at a few stores I was visiting, and thought I should just ask here,

I use it more as a reference for msyelf, so the downloaded pdf is fine for that. But when I need to help others it's EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. I was literally almost in tears earlier today (hence me revisiting today.... to complain some more).
Sorry for your frustration. The new Help system takes some getting used to, as there are no page numbers or indices, only search and a Help and Tutorials page. I would suggest using the html version of the Help when dealing with others, as you can refer your clients to specific URLs.

Is there no User Guide for Premiere Pro CS6?

I am a FCP7 refugee trying to decide between Avid and PP CS6. After waiting for a few weeks for it to be available, I have been lookiig through the PP CS6 Help PDF. I was surprised to see that it is not a complete reference guide documenting the features of the application, but instead a mish-mash of short descriptions, with numerous links to videos, documents from earlier versions, and other external locations where one has to go to get the actual information--not very helpful as a guide to the application. Is there actually no comprehensive user guide from Adobe in a single document or PDF? Or is the only way to get information about the application to navigate through all these disjointed materials?
If there is such a user guide, I would very much like to know where I can find it. If there isn't, I would have to count this as a very big factor in favor of deciding to go with Avid. This is particularly true given the absence of any current third-party books on PPro CS6, although such books are hardly a substitute for a well written and comprehensive user guide, something which is also true of the help PDF.

Yes, for CS6, new information was added to the CS5/CS5.5 documentation. We had to go this route because we are working with brand new documentation software. There simply was not enough time to integrate the software and complete a whole new set of documentation. Believe me, it was enough of a challenge integrating the old system with the new one--in addition to creating the articles for new features, and the connective tissue between them.
There is only one person that does the docs for Premiere Pro, and that is me. I have limitations and guidelines I must follow, so I hope you understand.

No, this is the Help. It has BOTH the comprehensive details about the software and community content where you can see how people are actually using the software. If the Help is lacking details about any feature, please alert me and I will include those details. I work directly from the engineering documentation and include every detail I can about any feature.
Since my time is limited, I don't always have time to make supplemental materials like video tutorials, or articles. That's why I link to them. The crucial info is included in the docs, the community content is material that I personally approve as helpful and supportive to the documentation.

None of the community content is irrelevant. I sort through it all very carefully. Community content is supportive and helpful to users. It should not be necessary to sort through these tutorials as the info should be right in the docs. Community content is supplemental. If you don't find the information you were looking for in the docs themselves, create a comment right on the Help page and I'll see to it that it gets fixed ASAP.

It is a real user guide. I'm sorry you don't feel that way. If you want a doc with only Premiere Pro CS6 info in it, I can understand that request. Unfortunately, that was impossible for this round.
If you have any suggestions for the next round of Help documentation, a better place than here would be the Community Help forum. Please voice your concerns there, as the people that actually make decisions about Help are hanging out there.

How to search for Premiere Pro Help, tutorials, and so on

Use a custom-made search engine when searching for Premiere Pro information.
I'm always accepting input for how to make the custom search better.

Maybe this thread (or similar) should be a "sticky" ?
PS! I haven't looked "all over the place" so maybe it is in some kind of way??, at least I hope so...

Optimal Hard Drive Configuration for Premiere Pro CS5 and Pro Tools

I am in the process of upgrading a workstation that is used primarily for multi-track audio recording in Pro Tools to use the following Adobe CS5 products for production of promotional videos in HDV (and AVCHD for the web) as well as printed marketing materials for bands and musicians: Premiere Pro, Encore, Photoshop, Illustrator and Soundbooth.
Since Premiere Pro is probably the most demanding application of the group, I have been studying the suggested hardware configurations on this forum with great interest, particularly HARM's suggestions (including his Generic Guideline for Disk Setup) to determine which hard drives to purchase and the optimal manner in which to configure them.
I am upgrading an HP Z800 with dual quad core 2.44 GhZ processors with hyperthreading (16 virtual cores), 12 GB of memory and an overclocked GeForce GTX 470. Without setting up a RAID configuration (which I cannot afford at the moment), I would like to use the 4 available HDD bays in the Z800 in the optimal manner for Premier Pro, using currently available drives. I am currently considering purchasing a 300GB VelociRaptor to use as my C drive because of the extended load times and demands placed on the drive by ProTools and the associated Waves plug-ins.
I would appreciate suggestions to improve my following plan: C (300GB WD VelociRaptor) for OS and Programs; D (1 TB WD Black Caviar) for Media and Projects; E (1 250 GB WD Black Caviar) for Pagefile (approx. 18 GB) and Media Cache; and E (2 TB WD Black Caviar) for Previews, Exports and Pro Tools audio files.
I have great respect for the knowledge of the members of this forum and eagerly await your suggestions.

I very much appreciate the responses to my email because I know that all of your time is valuable and that you have chosen to use some of that valuable time to help an unknown individual. This forum is remarkable because of the wealth of knowledge available and the willingness of so many to assist others.
I now wish to narrow my questions to save you time and so that I can get specific advice. I may not have not been clear that I have already upgraded to the HP Z800 with dual quad core processors and overclocked GTX 470, primarily for the improved performance it will provide in ProTools. My question now is how to optimize its performance for Premiere Pro CS5. Based upon my research, I am considering the following two upgrades, but I am open to other suggestions if they would provide better results at a similar cost
1. I am considering purchasing a 600GB WD VelociRaptor ( WD6000HLXH) for my C drive on which I would place OS (Windows 7, 64 Bit) and programs in an effort to reduce loading times of large programs. I have two questions: (1) Are members of the forum seeing a significant improvment in program loading times with the VelociRaptor because I am still not convinced that the price performance of SSD's justifies their use; and (2) There are so many models of VelociRaptors now that I want to be certain that I am purchasing the best version for my needs. In addition to the usual 10000 RPM speed, this model has 32MB Cache and a 3.5" form factor as well as a SATA 6.0GB/s interface (which I doubt my motherboard can take advantage of but it might extend the useful life of the drive with future configurations).
2. I currently have available for installation in the Z800 the following drives: (1) WD 2TB Black Caviar; (1) WD 1TB Black Caviar; (2) Hitachi 1TB. I believe that the Z800 can accept up to 5 SATA hard drives which I will have if I purchase the Velociraptor. Although I am reasonably knowledeable when it comes to hardware, I have never set up a RAID configuration. Therefore, it would be helpful if someone could recommend one of the various RAID configurations and brieflyexplain why it would seem to be best for my needs. I can then focus my research on understanding that one configuration.
I was planning to follow Scott's suggestion for my current 3 drives: OS and programs on C (WD 600 GBVelociRaptor), media and projects on D (WD 1TB Black Caviar), export files and Pro Tools files (all live musician tracks, no samples) on E (WD 2TB Black Caviar). However, I have been reading about the benefits of a RAID configuration so I am interested in further suggestions now that I have clarified my questions.

Background:
* just trying to decide what to go for re video editing app with more features than iMovie
* last time I'd tried Adobe Premiere Elements on my MacBook (but it was before I had an SSD) the performance was not good - it was sluggish to the point I really didn't want to use it
* so this question is just about whether in general FCP X performs better on a Mac (you'd think it would no, as it's made/optimized for a Mac)
My MacBook:
Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Elements is essentially an amateur app and Premiere a professional one similar to the discontinued Final Cut Pro 7.
FCP X is a radical new approach to editing which like Marmite, you either love or hate.
It is probably between the 2 in capabitlity but much closer to Premiere.
Some might say it was better than Premiere, whilst other long standing broadcast editors would disagree.
It all depends on your standpoint and I am trying to give an unbiased appraisal.
Some of the techniques it uses are way ahead of all other apps and this is what worries people who have an established way of working, though as I mentioned in another post, there are a few omissions which have upset those editors.
Some might say (echoes of Jeremy Clarkson) that FCP X is the most advanced editing app on the planet albeit with a few teething troubles.
