Better option than array[][]?

Is there a better(faster) option, I'm thinking something from Collections, for working with multideminsional problems where a double array is typically used? Or should I stick with imbedded for loops and double arrays.

  • Better options than DAVE for Win NT connection?

    I work for a small Mac design group in a large business environment. We store Quark, InDesign, Photoshop files on the companies Win NT Server. To do this they have installed DAVE because they said just using OS X's PC connect ability was causing the documents to be looked at as .exe or unrecognizable files by the Mac. Lately some files are giving I/O errors on the server and getting corrupted. Is there a better option for communicating with a PC server than DAVE?

    For just using OS X, I've never heard of any problems like that; I'm wondering if they're just confused? Or are they using a fairly fancy, unusual setup of some sort? Has anyone tried just connecting with the standard Mac feature?; I would be curious to hear what breaks (since if something does break, it probably implies that someone either misconfigured the Macs or misconfigured the server).
    For the files in question: Are you able to access these files from a Windows computer?; can you read them there? I'm wondering if the IO error was a network problem (that DAVE might have a connection to), or just that their server's hard disk is failing.

    Hi Guys
    I'm still reasonably new to Macs, and I am really more of a music person than a computer person (which is frustrating at times!!).
    I am looking at selling my iMac 2.4GHz (4GB RAM) and replacing it with a current iMac 2.66GHz, because the new iMacs can handle 8GB of RAM, which would really help me run BFD2 with less problems.
    But I noticed this on eBay:
    APPLE POWERMAC G5 2.3 GHZ DUAL CHIP-240gb HD-1.5 gb RAM (eBay item 230346540784) - would this be a better choice than going with a new iMac?
    I don't even know if this one is Quad Core. My knowledge of Mac Pros is zero! But I do know a lot of people go for them over iMacs, and even suggest getting a second hand Mac Pro in preference to a new iMac if it's for music.
    Could someone help out and tell me if the above machine is a better bet than going for a new iMac?

    i dont have any evidence to prove this, but i would think that your iMac would run circles around the much older power mac G5 system.
    a mac pro would be a diff story. mac pros are the 'new' version of the power macs now running intel chips.

  • Is there a better option than spark VideoDisplay with AV syncing capabilities

    We have developed an AIR application that involves syncing multiple audio tracks with a video track.  We are using the Spark VideoDisplay component for video and the Flash SoundChannel object for audio.  We are having trouble keeping the audio synced with the video.  Is there a better component to use for this?  Is there some technique to keeping audio and video synced in Flash/AIR?

    Your sample does not look like being »foot-intensive«, I only find two footnotes. And those will not be a problem for FrameMaker.
    For 2-column text layout FrameMaker (as InDesign) gives you the option to create one text frame set to have two columns, or create two connected text frames, each of them one column. To keep the footnote in the original column, you would use the latter method. More information can be found in the online help:

    Regarding other elements of the sample pages I don’t see any stumbling blocks. Just be aware that the general approach to layout, and especially when using XML-structured documents, is completely different from InDesign. With InDesign you just move all the frames wherever and whenever you want. With FrameMaker you plan ahead, create master pages and paragraph styles and then follow this original design. Creating layout changes »on the fly« is just not the way you work in FrameMaker. But this limitation is the reason for a higher layout consistency.

  • Is Framemaker a better option than InDesign for footnote-intensive reports?

    We currently used InDesign to layout our reports and briefings, and are exploring it's XML capabilities with a view to output in multiple formats: high-res PDFs, web pages within our CMS, and e-Pubs. We are unable to tag our hyperlinked footnotes for XML output in InDesign, and wondered if Framemaker would be a better tool. Our layouts are in colour, in a 2-column format, contain charts and tables and occasional exhibits, and we adhere to a strict template with both paragraph and character styles.
    Any direction or insights would be appreciated!

    Used to have a macbook, bought it back in '07, had to sell it shortly thereafter.
    Don't have a computer now and need one.
    Looking over the macbook pro, I am wondering if it is too much computer for me.
    I use a computer for emails, surfing the web and twitter.
    I'm wondering if the ipad would be a better fit, or if I should be looking for a computer.

    MacBook air just perfect i have an iPad 2 ( I know it's an old one but it is almost same ) i mostly need pc for stuff and normally I like to download movies for that I need a good memory which you won't get on an iPad best choice for you is a 11 or 13 inch MacBook air iPad is bettween comp and a phone it is good but not enought ( altleast for me ) if you take an iPad u won't the benefits of downloading zip files and many other files but with a MacBook you can do it as it supports all iPad is good for presenting stuff good for reading books , web pages are good too ( flash is not there so some sites are not good ) editing word docs or slidshows are nice and easy but not fully usefull ( simple editing options) if you convert the files say into doc it gets messy on a comp to see , plus doc files with lots of stuff like photos and tables gets messed up but if we convert to PDF then you get a nice experience , MacBook has many options in pages , numbers , keynote , you will like an iPad even I like it but like u even I am looking for a MacBook right now as I need to back up files and download movies anyways it decides unto u so go to the apple shop he will help u choice the right choice a person here will only tell good stuff and suggest what he likes but if you go to the apple store he will give you the perfect choice for u

  • Is XHTML better option than BSP extensions?

    for some strange reason my project team wants to use XHTML for layout rather than any of the existing BSP extensions...the reason being the HTMLB does not generate XHTML in the back-end or something like that. Is anyone aware of any such lackings in BSP extensions that we have? Are there any alternatives with in BSP extensions? I want to convince the team to use standard BSP extensions...

    but I dont think it is going to have what you are looking for. I have had some experience with itegrating output from BSP into a Websphere portal and it wasnt that much fun. We used iframes to host the bsp application in portal which wasnt ideal. This was only for a prototype of a large application and the full blown applicaion would have probably used websphere making bapi calls to get the info from sap. One option was using EP between BSP and WebSphere but this is probably not an option due to budget  constraints.
    This isn't a great deal of help but hopefully it is food for thought.

    i wrote a for.. loop and im checking one bye one from ticket master table using select count(*) from ticket_master where ticket_no = var, which is time consuming and server becoming slow when i issue this query. my ticket master ticket_no is indexed.
    any better idea advise please..

    This might be of interest, seems apple are encouraging the record companies to improve their source files for submission to the itunes store. Any improvement in audio quality is to be welcomed.

    The mastered for itunes document in the first link contains a comment about keeping the highest quality masters in our systems will allow for future improvements to your music.
    Was reading a couple of online blogs abut this and most people appear to be positive about the improvements, I had a listen and compared some previous CD against the same track in the mastered for itunes list and its appears to be an improvement (using Grado Labs SR80 phones not white ear buds), more open sounding.
    Some CDs mastered years ago are very poor and even some recent ones are poorly mastered (loudness, bright) suppose it depends on the care put in at source that counts.

    OS X cannot natively write to a drive formatted as NTFS, nor can it format a drive as NTFS. There are third-party NTFS drivers available on the market.
    Just out of curiosity: Even with NTFS, how is your TV going to access the external hard drive? Does the TV have a USB port?

  • Which is the better option?

    Hey, I'm looking at getting a new mac but I'm not sure what's the better option. My choice right now is between the base 21.5 inch iMac or the Mac mini ( $799 model), and my main use for it would be recording instruments, music production, and movies / netflix. The 21.5 inch Mac would only give me 8gb of ram, whereas the Mac mini I'd instantly be able to upgrade to 16gb. Another bonus to the mac mini is that I can hook it up to whatever screen I want including my TV for movies.Also, the firewire on the mac mini would be extremely useful as some of the higher quality recording interfaces use firewire. And from what I understand I can also add a SSD to the mac mini? For these reasons I'm leaning towards the Mac mini but I've been recommended by representatives at apple to get the iMac as it's more powerful supposedly, so I'm not sure which one would be better. I know the iMac has a dedicated graphics card vs the integrated hd 4000 on the Mac mini, but I'm not exactly sure how that affects me for what I plan on using the computer for. I'd have to buy a monitor and mouse + keyboard for the mac mini, so it ends up costing me the same as the base model iMac. Any suggestions/ opinions would be appreciated, thanks.

    I would recommend getting the 16GB iMac. If money is an issue then consider using Apples refurbished store, there is no downside to buying from it as they sell current machine, the products have the same warranty as a new machine, and are eligible for AppleCare.

  • IPhoto 09 Gives Better Results than Aperture 2.0 on RAW

    I wanted to compare the results of Aperture 2.0 to iPhoto '09 on a RAW photo. To my chagrin, iPhoto had done a better job on the photo just by using the instant fix wizard and then one click on the color saturation effect.
    With Aperture, I imported the iPhoto library and made sure I was working on the "Original" RAW photo from that library. My workflow started with autoexposure, then the two auto levels (Luminance & RGB) by the histogram. I maxed the Sharpening in the RAW fine tuning.
    I tried tweaking the contrast, saturation, exposure and recovery. Nothing I can seem to do in Aperture can get the photo to look have the details as sharp and the colors as vibrant. iPhoto's automatic algorithms appear to be far superior to Aperture's auto exposure and auto levels of Luminance and RGB. Plus, it appears to do a better job than all the other controls will allow me to do manually.
    Has anyone else compared the two products side by side on the same photo and experienced the same?

    Hmmmm,
    This is a meaningless comparison - If you cannot get the results you want in Ap then just use iPhoto and it's auto everything button and be happy. There is nothing magic going on in iPhoto, it uses the same CoreImage subroutines as Aperture for RAW interpretation prior to applying any of it's adjustments. One thing that the iPhoto auto functions will do is it will sacrifice more highlights and shadows detail than the Aperture auto levels will, you can set that in prefs if you like more contrast.

    Ps. the raw fine tuning sharpen slider will make virtually no visual difference, it is NOT for final output sharpening.

    I have a valid example data file attached to this thread.
    If you open BEXTEST.bin in a hex-editor of your choice, you'll see the BEXUS as 42 45 58 55 53 and then the time as 00 28 09 etc.
    I couldn't get Joe Guo's VI to work. It doesn't count packages correctly, and the time is not displayed correctly either.
    The file was saved using a straight save to file VI.
    The data is from actual launching area tests performed a few mintues ago. The time displayed is "On time" e.g. how long the gondola has been powered up.
    I have a spare T-junction, so I can hook into the balloon real-time data as we fly, in case anyone care to see if they can figure out why the latest version of Joe Guo's program is not displaying correctly.
    I will monitor this
    thread during and after flight to see if anyone can make it in time!
