Better playback of  Canon 5D Mark 2 footage in 4.1?

Hi,
since the update installations gives me errors all the time (my post here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/439764?tstart=0 ), I can't verify this myself:
The readme of the PPro update say, that h.264 playback/handling is improved. So I was wondering, if the playback of native Canon 5D mark 2 files falls into this section also.
I'm not talking about proxies or cineform's neo etc. I mean the raw quicktime footage from the camera...native...
Since Canon annaunced yesterday that FULL MANUAL control (aperture, ISO, shutter) will be availible on june 2nd, this is pretty much the last (and 25p support in the cam) hurdle for editing the 5DII footage.
Please let us know!
Martin

I would try it out right away, but I'm not able to update my Production Premium for about 4 hours now. Well, I can download it, but the instalation quits with 3 errors. I made an extra post about it, but so far nobody seems to have the same issue.
I read that somebody had some other issues with instalation, so maybe the uploded files aren't that "perfect" because adobe wanted it up by the end of may (like they said the would
I've seen a few comments on installation errors already. Hope that that gets solved. It would be tough finally getting the long-awaited 4.1, only to find that it would not install, and may even mess things up. Fingers X'ed here. I also hope that Adobe was 100% satisfied with their efforts, and there was no Midnight-coding, as it was headed out the door.
As for the footage from the Canon - I've only heard great things about it. Some of the after-market folk have already gotten on the bandwagon with all sorts of add-ons for it on the video side. There were a couple of interesting ads in last month's American Cinematographer. Apparently some companies feel that there will definitely be a market for "stuff" to use this camera and its lenses for doing some serious video work. Time will tell. Though I'm a Nikon-guy* on the still-side of life, this Canon does look sweet. Hope that 4.1 is all that users could ask for. Again, the fingers are X'ed.
Good luck,
Hunt
* since my wife went digital, all of her point-n-shoot still cameras have been Canon. Now, I do not store these in the same room with my Nikons, but I do like their choices better than what Nikon offers.

    Let's see:
5 Minutes of research would have told you about 5DMKIII support availabitliy but that is too much time to spend additionally researching a 15K purchase.
You paid 79.00 for the LR Upgrade and 14,000 plus for the rest of the package.
You bought a camera that was released after the 79.00 software.
You are using a Public Beta for the other software (no cost to you)
A Camera Raw release candidate with support is availabe. I(again no cost to you
    Yet you say:
"Come on Adobe, where's the release? After a few grand you'd think we'd get a better response time. "
    So far, you've paid 79.00

  • Canon 5D Mark II footage in FCP

Does anybody edit Canon 5D Mark II footage with FCP? My playback stops at every blade cut or in the end of the clip for a second before resumes the next clip ... pretty annoying. All the other HD camera footage plays just fine.
    Help!
    Jarmo

I can only covet your camera, but I happen to have a FCP tutorial for the Mark II. It says do this:
    1. Make sure you have latest MacOS (10.5.6 or highter), Quicktime (7.6 or higher), and FCP (6.0.5 or higher). And of course an Intel-based Mac (2.8 Ghz recommended). You may still get some stutter during playback with multiple layers of video, audio, and transitions/filters. But output will be OK.
    2. Make a Mark II pre-set as follows (one day FCP will include one, sigh):
    Select Audio/Video Settings.
select Sequence Presets. Select this one to duplicate and modify: DV NTSC 48 kHz.
Pull down Aspect Ratio and select HDTV 1080 i (16:9). that is is really correct but 1080p is not a choice but you will not convert to interlaced anyway.
Change *Pixel Aspect Ratio* to SQUARE. Do NOT check Anamorphic 16:9
    Select *Field Dominance* Upper(Odd)
    *Editing Time base*: select 30
    *Timecode Path*: 30 Non-Drop Frame
    Compressor: H.264
    *Audio Settings*:
Rate: 44 kHz, Depth: 16-bit, Config: Cannel Grouped
Under SUMMARY tab in Audio/Video Settings:
(make sure Sequence Preset shows name of the one you just made)
    Capture Preset: Generic Capture Template
    Device Control: Non-controllable device
    Video Playback: none
    Audio Playback: default
Click Create Easy Setup (put in your Mark II name) and click Create
    Enable verification tab: checked
NOW when you begin a new project, go to Easy Setup and pull down your newly-created Mark II preset. The tutorial I got this from said to be sure you create a NEW project or some default presets may still be in play.
You may need TRANSCODING if your system still struggles with the above.
Convert H.264 to a managable HD codec (Apple ProRes 422 or 422 (HQ) or DVCPRO HD 1080p30)
I assume you would know the steps doing this, but if not, let me know.
Would really like to know if this works for you. Have the Mark II on a short list of possibilities for a new camera.
    Good luck!

  • Can Canon 5D Mark II footage be edited in FCE at 1080p?

Can Canon 5D Mark II footage be edited and outputted in FCE at 1080p?
I am converting the raw 5D footage to Apple intermediate Codec using MPEG Stream Clip and then importing into FCE. Playback during editing is fine. Then I notice that in the easy set up options there doesn't seem to be an option to choose 1080p. Does that mean that FCE cannot edit/output 1080p files, or does it just mean that there is no easy setup for 1080p? What should my easy setup settings be for editing these files in FCE?
    Thanks for your help

I converted to apple intermediate codec using MPEG streamclip to make it easier to edit in imovie (plays back smoother) so assumed it was best to do the same with FCE. Not necessary?
    The converted file data is
    H.264, 1920x1080, AIC, 16 bit, big endian, FPS30, 64.62 mb/s
    The original file data is
    H.264, 1920x1080, 16 bit, little endian, FPS30, 39.77 mb/s
    Thanks

  • Exporting Canon 5D Mark ii footage..

I'm fairly new to final cut, im running a Mac Pro, 2 X 3 Ghz processor, 10GB memory, 10.6.2 snow leopard... and i still find myself having to render at every edit in the timeline, and now im having trouble figuring out how to export correctly to get the highest possible quality on youtube and/or vimeo
here's what i have done and researched so far:
i took my original canon 5d footage into MPEG streamclip and converted the files into Apple ProRes 422 (LT) at 30fp, i then created a custom setup in final cut 7 with the following presets:
SEQUENCE PRESET: Canon 5D Mark ii footage (duplicated an Apple ProRes 422 (LT) 1920X1080 30p 44.1ghz audio)
CAPTURE PRESET: DVCPRO HD 1080p30 48kHz (i won't be capturing in fcp since i've been using MPEG streamclip
    DEVICE CONTROL PRESET: FIREWIRE NTSC
VIDEO PLAYBACK: (sometimes i have this set at Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Full Screen so that i can take advantage of my other monitor, but it tends to drop frames faster in playback, so i usually have it set to "none")
    AUDIO PLAYBACK: Default
now my question is, how do i correctly export this? i tried a couple different ways, some had skipped frames... others the audio was off... another setting made the colors way too contrasty after exporting...
also how can i solve this "rendering" issue... did i make a mistake in the beginning in setting up the timeline (btw , the sequence matches the same settings as the footage... ) i'm also playing back at "safe RT, medium quality, half frame rate..." not sure if that matters..
so yeah, my two main questions are, correct export for this file, and any help with render issues?
    thank you..

    oops.sorry...
here is a link to what i uploaded using Quicktime X directly to youtube..
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3q19YDSdWE
it doesn't look as good as i think it could...and it has a HQ option instead of HD? i don't have quicktime pro so i couldn't export with exact settings, just directly to youtube... how can i export w/ final cut .. when i export using quicktime conversion and using Apple Pro Res, it ends up being a 1.34gb file and its only 1 minute... would i then need to compress it?
and yes i need to get rid of all the layers i have in the timeline.. maybe that might help but it was giving me the rendering "RED" color even in the beginning when i had 1 layer..
i changed audio to 44.1 because i read it somewhere online i believe it was under phillip bloom.. suggesting to change from 48 to 44.1 for all canon 5d footage.. ? im not sure why though..

  • Canon 5d Mark ii not logging any footage

    Howdy-
I have a Canon 5d Mark ii using FCP7. I always use the Log and Transfer plugin (The E1 that you obtain from Canon's website) to import footage, however when I went to use it the other day, and I clicked it, it did not read any files like it normally should. I click the external card that it is located on and nothing happens. Please help! I have a large project due soon! Thanks!

Reading at your first post it sounds like you are logging and transferring direct from the card in the camera. If so, whilst it can be done, this is wrong. You need to make a copy of the entire contents to a hard drive on or connect to your computer.
From the message you are getting you don't have all the data needed for log and transfer to import, its some how corrupted, or do you have still images on the card as well? Sometimes this causes a problem.

  • Canon 5D Mark II Footage and Final Cut 5

I recently received some footage shot with a Canon 5D Mark II that I will be needing to edit. It seems as though the ideal codec to use is ProRes but unfortunately I am working with Final Cut 5 and this is not an option. I was told that I could use Apple Intermediate Codec but that I would need to adjust the project settings to 1080/30 fps not interlaced. Can someone please confirm this and tell me how I can make those adjustments to my project settings. Also, will the clips require rendering when i place them on my timeline. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, you did mention the AIC.
    Frame size-1920x1080
    P.A.R. - square
    Field Dominance - None
Editing Timebase - same as your source clips. Check that in the Browser or in MPEG Streamclip. If you left it at 30 in Streamclip, stay with 30. If you changed it to 29.97 in Streamclip, make your sequence 29.97 also. If you bring in titles, make sure the clips are set to Field Dominance of None. I find that Final Cut wants to assume all 1080 is interlaced so it sets FD to Upper.

  • Problem with using Canon 5D Mark II footage with FCPX

    Looking for advice ,
Avid have AMA link so you don't need to wast hard drive space, it conect directly to your raw footage and you can edit you don't need to transcode footage in order to edit. Does FCPX have that option ? The footage that I am using is Canon 5D mark II  after import i am ending up with raw footage and transcode footage Dubuling use of my space on HD . I would like to be able to dump my Canon 5D footage on hard drive conect with FCP(without dubuling footage) and start editing. I am doing someting wrong ? Need advice .
    Thanks
    A

    That is great thanks
    My steps are these:
    1. From my card I add DCIM folder to FCP Events folder.
    2. Then I go to FCP X and import but then he is creating original media folder with (id) so then I guess I can delite DCIM since I can use for future editing that (id) raw footage .Is that corect? My hard drive is backing up everytime I add new footage to HD.

  • Working with footage from Canon 5D Mark ii

    Hi
I have recently started working with video taken on a Canon 5D Mark ii.
Should I always convert all my footage into Apple Pro Res 422 (HQ) when I want to edit HD 1920x1080 footage?
Also I have just finished a project not knowing that this might have to be done, and when I added colour correction the exported quick time conversion looked terrible.
Is there any way to save this edit, or should I just convert the origional footage and start again?!
    Thanks

This is a topic that gets discussed a lot, and i'm curious if anyone has any more insight into it. From what i understand, ProRes HQ is 10-bit codec, while normal ProRes is 8-bit. The footage coming off of your h.264 camera is in 8-bit space, so if you encode it to 10-bit, you're just getting filling in a bunch of extra space. it's like building a 3-car garage for your motorcycle.
One of the reasons the files get so much larger going from H.264 to APR is that H.264 is an inter-frame codec, meaning that it uses information from more than one frame and evaluates the changes from frame to frame to calculate what any individual frame should look like. This means you don't need to store as much raw data for each frame, but it's more processing intensive to calculate the image from what's there. Final cut doesn't like to do this kind of calculation, at least in its current incarnation. So you convert it to APR 422, which is an Intra-frame codec, which stores all of the information for each frame individually in one place, even if it's a relatively unchanging shot. this means a lot more raw data, but it also means final cut can just look in one place for each frame and not have to figure out how to build it out of the surrounding frames. larger files, but easier on the program.
premiere is supposedly kicking *** right now with dealing with this kind of stuff. and they are integrating h.264 specific chipsets in some of the newer computers, so it may become less of an issue in the future. from what i understand anyway.
anyway. if anyone has any other shades of clarification about what's going on with the technical sides of that stuff, i'm trying to get more clear myself.

  • Which one has better AF system Canon 550D or Canon 1D mark II N

    Hi,
I curently using canon 550D for bird photography and often misses the moments due to low FPS on Canon 550D.
My friend suggested me to trade in Canon 550d for good Canon 1D mark II N which has good AF system and high FPS. Yes I may loose some pixels but is it really a worth to give a shot?
    Please suggest me.
    Thanks,
    Mohan

Almost any newer camera than your T2i will do everything better including the 1D Mk IIn.  I still use mine on very limited occasions.  If you have EF-S lenses, none of them will work on a Mk IIn.
Bob from Boston, aka The Snowman, hits on an important point. The Mk IIn is dated and not likely going to be computer friendly for you.  You will not be able to change any of the Personal Custom Settings for instance.  It does not have lithium batteries either.
Have you considered the 1D Mk III ?  A much better and way more advanced camera and computer friendly.  If you are on the fence about a 1 series, the 1D Mk II (not the 'n' version) can be had in great shape for a couple hundred bucks.  Not a lot of money to see if it is for you or not.  That way you will know if a better and more expensive Mk III or even the fantastic Mk IV is in order.

  • Is anyone using iMovie 08 for editing footage from a Canon 5D Mark 11?

I'm interested to converse with anyone that is using iMovie 08 to edit Movie files from the Canon 5D Mark 11.

    HI Stephen,
I have iMovie 09 on order hoping that it would alleviate this issue - sounds like it does not. Similarly to you, my footage imports fine, but the application crashes when the curser is moving over the video. I am lead to believe that iMovie just cannot cope with the high resolution of the 5D Mark 11.
I have tried the same files on other Macs and the same issue occurs, so it is not my machine or software issues on my machine. All of my software is up to date - except for Quicktime. I am running 7.5.5, so don't bother trying to roll back from 7.6 because it will not help.
I have also tried the footage on Final Cut Express and it crashes that application as well. I understand the Final Cut Pro can work with the files. At this stage I presume that Canon 5D mark11 users cannot edit footage on iMovie or FCE and possibly some other applications.
Let us hope and pray that Apple and Canon can sort this out!
    Scott

  • Can Premiere Pro smart render footage from a Canon 5D mark III ?

I already read that Premiere Pro can smart render certain codecs. But I want to know exactly: Can it smart render the video from a Canon 5D mark III?
In case smart render is not very specific: I'm asking if it can export the footage after cutting without rencoding it by just saving the individual frames into a new video container with the same codec. This should increase export time alot.
I'm asking because I have Premiere Elements and this feature would be the only reason for me to switch to Pro. I currently need 40 Minutes to render 10 Minutes. As a journalist I need to be faster.

Do you have any other tips how to boost export speed? I don't need the video to be small. I only do a raw edit where I cut out the junk. Quality loss should be minimal and speed ist most important.
Its hard to know if your export speed is normal or otherwise without some detail from you for comparison.
Hardware, system, OS and current export settings and times etc..
Generally the system and set up will determine the speed and editing experience.
5D footage should be no problem at all to a decent system ( and setup)
If you do a test export for us...tell us how long the export takes for how much footage .  eg 1 minute footage = X export time.
    No Effects.

  • (Windows) Premiere cs4 with Canon 5D Mark II

I'm seriously considering buying Adobe's Production Premium, but I am extremely concerned about Premiere's support for the files outputted by my Canon 5D Mark II, h264 .mov 1920x1080p 30fps.
I've done a lot of research and it seems as if a lot of folks with a lot more experience, better hardware components and 3rd party software packages haven't been able to find a workflow that is reasonable in terms of effort and time required just to get a project going.
Can anyone give me a reason why I shouldn't seriously consider moving to an Apple solution with FCP Studio over production premium cs4 with premiere and after effects?
    Thanks for your honest opinions!

If you want to stay on PC, would be the main reason.
I dont know how well FCP handles it; but typically fcp converts everything to an intermediate format (pro res)
I am definitely cringing at the thought of ditching all of my PC components (well, I suppose I can re-use the hard-drives at least in the Mac Pro if that's what I get). I do like a lot about windows, and being able to upgrade my stuff to my own liking rather than being stuck in a closed ecosystem. I also game a lot so that's a consideration too.
The way FCP converts the video to Pro Res sounds pretty smart and definitely take the guesswork out.
    Jim Simon
Best one I can think of is that it would be an Apple solution.
The better solution would be to get a real video camera for video production.  While the world of DSMC is rapidly approaching, we're not quite there yet.
    Thanks for your reply, Jim!
I agree making the switch to Apple and Final Cut Studio might not be the best solution.
I cannot really speak to getting a "real" video camera just because Premiere cs4 can't seem to play nicely with the camera I currently have.
I am able to drag and drop 5D Mark II .mov files straight into imovie 6 HD, have it import (40 gb of movies in 4-5 hrs) and then edit away with no delays on a Macbook (non-pro) with no problems whatsoever. Playback, cutting, transitions, effects are silky smooth. Imovie 6 HD came with my Macbook when I bought it in December 2006. Premiere Pro came out last year didn't it? What gives?
There are people making some "real" good stuff out there with this camera and I love its ability to use all of my Canon lenses (four), high capacity memory cards (ranging from 8gb to 32gb) and camera batteries that I already have. Buying a new, but "real", camera would mean learning a whole new camera system not to mention having to buy all of the accessories, lenses, batteries, memory cards (a Panasonic P2 16gb alone is $800 USD) and carrying all that extra stuff around. If I'm on vacation for instance every morning I would have to make the decision of carting around either the still camera or the video camera instead of just bringing something that could do it both, and potentially miss either a once in a lifetime still or video.
I'm a photographer by trade but I'm getting into video production because I feel like I will need video editing/production skills in the future or I'll be left in the dust. That isn't the only reason of course - I've always wanted to shoot video but couldn't afford or justify a quality camera until now.
Jim why do you prefer Premiere to Final Cut Pro on the Mac?
    Thanks again for replying.
    Matt.

  • PE 7 with Canon 5D Mark II - bad slowmotion quality

    Hi,
I've used the trial version for some days now to set up a video with shots from my Canon 5D Mark II.
I want the video clips to play in slowmotion so I've set the speed to 50%.
When I render the video I get bad quite quality (jagged playing) and I want it to be smooth.
Does anyone know if this is a know problem and could be solved in any way in PE 7?
If not, will it be the same problem in Premiere Pro version or does this version have a lot better render quality?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum.
There are a couple of articles on this forum on "Canon 5D MK II" footage, and many more on the PrPro forum. Pay special attention to links to other articles and also comments from Jeff Bellune, a noted author and Community Expert. While I do not recall "slow motion" being discussed, there is much discussion on the .MOV files from that camera.
The Adobe fora allow one to search by both Subject and by People.
If I find some of the links, I will post them here.
Good luck, and have you done a Render (hit the Enter key) to Preview in the best form possible?
