Better Range and Stability?

I am looking for people who have used the previous generation AirPort Extreme and the current Draft N generation. I am considering purchasing the new Draft N version to be used in a mixed N + G environment, but would like comments on the stability and usable range of the product. My current Extreme is the most stable, second only to Cisco Access Points, access points I have ever used, it requires restarting maybe once a year. What are peoples experience with the Draft N version is the OS stable in both router and access point mode, how often does it need to be reset? Finally range on my current model leaves something to be desired, do people find the range to be improved, same, or worse?
Thanks for all your help

Hello Jamie. I can really only comment on the wireless range in my limited setup. Other people may have different experiences. My new setup is a mixed G + N environment.
Anyway, I recently purchased the Airport Extreme N and I find that the wireless range is noticeably (if not dramatically) better to a difficult to reach spot on my second floor.
According to iStumbler, my wireless percentage to this trouble spot was 35-38% with my old Airport Express. After installing the Airport Extreme N, the wireless percentage jumped up to 49-54%. Not quite as good as some other spots on my second floor, but a pretty good improvement nonetheless.
Moving files around to different computers in my house seems to be snappier as well, but I haven't done any extensive testing on that.

  • Yoga 13 Wireless Fix - far better range and speed using 5G Linksys AE6000 .11ac usb nub

    $60 Linksys model AE6000 802.11ac USB hub has made my Yoga 13 a useful device.  Benefits are as follows, along with a quick "how to" tutorial.
    Far better range from my access point (80 feet with reasonable speed on Linksys vs. 30 feet using built-in Realtek WLAN card.
    Significantly faster speed 55 meg/sec using 5G, compared to stock Yoga/Realtek's 2.4 GHz-limited 14-16 meg/second download speeds - both tests done same day using Ookla Speedtest.net)
    No longer crashing after resume (I suspect the crashing that began with Win 8.1 is due to driver issue)
    Recognizes both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WLAN networks (Windows 8.1 failed to recognize 5GHz signal until I backdated the Linksys WLAN driver to use Windows 7 driver).
    TUTORIAL / STEPS:
    Turn off (or at a minimum - review before downloating) windows updates - otherwise Win8.1/Yoga will over-write the good driver you're about to install and revert you back to slow WLAN performance.  Give Microsoft 6-12 months & maybe they'll get the drivers right for their POS Win 8.1.
    Create a restore point.
    Download & the Windows 7 (yes, seven) drivers to a folder on your Yoga.
    Then open the following folder:
    C\Windows\System32\drivers
    Locate the file named "netr28ux.sys" and move it to a new folder you create on your desktop (for safe keeping)
    Download the Windows 7 x64 drivers for the Linksys AE6000 and the installation/setup program from the Linksys support pages here
    http://support.linksys.com/en-us/support/adapters/AE6000
    Extract those Win7 x64 files (including the netr28ux.sys file) into their own folder, then copy the extracted files to the
    C\Windows\System32\drivers  folder.
    Run the Linksys AE6000's little setup utility, insert the little nub into your USB port, complete running the setup utility, type in (or select) your network, type in your password & select your encryption type, and you should be in good shape.
    I turn my onboard "WLAN 1" card off using the right-swipe/charms, and the Linksys shows up as "WLAN 2" with the networks it's picking up.
    CAVEATS:
    The Linksys AE6000 occupies one your USB ports, but the Linksys AE6000 seems to have the smallest size (barely 1" sticking out) and was rated the fastest of its size by PC Magazine.  Very good performance for .11n and .11ac environments.
    This mod may not be for everyone.  I was able to barely tolerate the Yoga's wireless limitations since purchasing in May, but the Win 8.1 rollout (along with what must be craptastic drivers) was the last straw.  The system began behavng erratically, crashing after resume, and wireless was even worse (speed degraded to 1 meg/sec or less up and download, within an hour after a reboot).
    I have not checked the impact of this nub on battery life.  I suspect it may be a little worse than stock, but it may be a reasonable tradeoff for me to actually be able to travel more than 30 feet from my router/access point (and have YouTube stream in FHD without stutters/crashes).
    BACKGROUND:
    After Windows 8.1 update, my Yoga 13's wireless performance went from barely adequate to useless (crashed on resume, speed degradation an hour after fresh boot, etc.).
    I'm sharing this info because I've enjoyed this machine's other assets so much.  It's too bad we can't replace the Realtek WLAN card, and obviously Lenovo though enough of our issues suffered that they chose a different card for the Yoga 2 (although the antenna design still may be partly to blame for some of those performance issues as well).   Love the keyboard, display, etc. and can put up with the fan noise (if someone has a fix for fan noise though, please post to this thread or point me to the fix).
    Best of luck with this potential (relatively inexpensive) work-around.  It's not as ideal as switching out the internal card, but I'm pretty pleased so far.  If there are other wireless fixes, please share on this thread.
    Thanks,
    Stanford

    Having used this thing for a couple of weeks now, I'm still amazed at how great the network performance is and how it's transformed my Yoga 13 into a near-instant device around the house (incl range that extends to the garage and perimeters of front & back yards.  And traveling is pretty phenomenal too - great speeds at the hotels we've visited (instead of having to tether my 4G phone because Lenovo's weak-sauce wireless couldn't hang onto a 1-bar connection for 3 minutes).
    It's a small tradeoff in having a 1" by 1/8" inch "nub" stick out of a USB port, but one of the best $60 upgrades I've ever done.  Highly recommended.

  • EA3500 - Terrible range and internet connection drops

    Mainly disappointed in the range which was supposed to have been improved so was disappointed when it wasn't any better. My house isn't big at all and the 5ghz barely made it from one end of the house to the other. Also, the Cloud Connect firmware. When my Internet connection went down I was not able to log into the router to see what was up. I restored the non-Cloud Connect firmware which I was then able to access the router admin functions.
    I temporarily used my old WRT54GS until I got the Airport and that older router gave better range and was more solid than the EA3500. The Airport Extreme has great range and offers a solid connection without the need to reboot the router frequently.
    I appreciate you taking the time to ask. I am non-biased so just relaying my experience the way it was.
    PS - bring the WRT54 routers back and add a wireless-N radio and I think you'd have one heck of a product!

    Have you tried tweaking the wireless settings of the router? You may try that as a first workaround. For the 5Ghz wireless settings, you may change the channel on it and set the security to wpa2 personal. For the 2.4Ghz wireless settings, you may try the following: channel width: 20mhz only ; channel: 1,3,6,or 9, security: wpa2 personal. If tweaking the wireless settings won't work, I suggest that you reset the router and reconfigure the settings on it either using the cd or doing it manually. if you decide to do it manually, these links should help you: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=0ff4c94586a345d082828ec2161aaecf_3686.xml&pid=80&r... (Setting up a Linksys router with Cable Internet service) and http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=20ee1457387f40178cd5f41d4b585db4_3687.xml&pid=80&r...(Setting up a Linksys router for DSL Internet connection).

  • Which Apple product to use to get better range at home?

    I have several Macs at home; all but one is wired since my whole house is wired. however, I recently bought a Macbook Pro and have successfully used it in the house both wired and wireless.
    However, my office is situated at such an angle to the dsl modem that I have (from Qwest) which basically gives me no wireless signal in my house. This is true for other devices that I've tried to use there. There are multiple drywall walls "in the way" and given the angle and foundation in my house, there is likely some cement foundation also in the way.
    Is there a device (Apple or otherwise) that I can use as a wireless signal repeater that would get me a better connection in my office? If so, what is it, and if not, then I'll just run another RJ45 wire to my laptop. Just had hoped to avoid that.
    Thanks
    Dennis

    It is possible to use a second wireless access point to extend the first. But based on things I see on the web it looks like both access points have to be from the same vendor, and both must support this ability. It seems to be a fairly rare features. Apple's Extreme base station and Express appear to work this way, but it is unlikely that you could use an Apple product to extend your existing non-Apple base station.
    Some base stations have better range in difficult situations than others. I've had good luck with products using the Airgo True MIMO technology (currently I'm using Netgear Rangemax 240). But there's no way to know without trying whether that will be enough improvement. It took me from mostly working but slightly flaky to a solid connection. I'm less optimistic that it would take you from nothing at all to a good connection.
    There are also base stations that allow an external antenna. If you're concerned about a single remote location, a directional antenna could help.
    Clearly running a wire to a nearby location is the safest. (Either to connect directly or to put a base station near where you use your laptop.)

  • Diff. bet ABAP  and SAP Query

    HI
    Anybody can explain in detail about ABAP  and SAP Query.....
    And tell me what is the main diff. bet ABAP  and SAP Query...
    Regards
    S.Baskaran

    SAP Query
    Purpose
    The SAP Query application is used to create lists not already contained in the SAP standard system. It has been designed for users with little or no knowledge of the SAP programming language ABAP. SAP Query offers users a broad range of ways to define reporting programs and create different types of reports such as basic lists, statistics, and ranked lists.
    Features
    SAP Query's range of functions corresponds to the classical reporting functions available in the system. Requirements in this area such as list, statistic, or ranked list creation can be met using queries.
    All the data required by users for their lists can be selected from any SAP table created by the customer.
    To define a report, you first have to enter individual texts, such as titles, and select the fields and options which determine the report layout. Then you can edit list display in WYSIWYG mode whenever you want using drag and drop and the other toolbox functions available.
    ABAP Query, as far as I Believe, is the use of select statements in the ABAP Programming. This needs a knowledge of Open SQL commands like Select,UPdtae, Modify etc. This has to be done only by someone who has a little bit of ABAP experience.
    To sum up, SAP queries are readymade programs given by SAP, which the user can use making slight modification like the slection texts, the tables from which the data is to be retrieved and the format in which the data is to be displayed.ABAP queries become imperative when there is no such SAP query existing and also when there is a lot of customizing involved to use a SAP Query directly.

  • I have a new MBRP. On wired ethernet it can be used as a wireless hotspot. Since 802.11ac gets better range I'd like to use it with 802.11ac as a hotspot for my older 802.11g/ndevices. Can I do that ?

    I know that if I use wired ethernet then the  MBRP can be a wirelss hotspot for other devices. Since the MBRP supports 802.11ac and I have a new 802.11ac wireless router it gets much better range than my older 802.11/n devices.  There are places in teh house where the MBRP connects to the wireless but where older 802.11g/n devices lare out of range. In those rooms I'd like to use my MBRP connected to the network wirelessly using 802.11ac as a hotspot for the nearby 802.11 g/n devices. Anyone know if that can be done and how to do it ?

    Turn on Internet Sharing in Sharing preferences. Share the Ethernet connection to wireless.

  • Need JavaScript for Sharepoint Designer 2010, to show a Pop-up to all the users between date range and the redirect the site

    Dear all,
    I am very new to Sharepoint designer 2010. Its better to say, i am just stepping in.
    I have sharepoint site which is accessible for all the users to update few information. But i want this site not to be accessible during a date range, say from 15th to 20th of every month.
    I am planning to have something like this: If any user tries to access this sharepoint site between 15th to 20th date range of everymonth, then the browser must show an pop-up alert saying "This site is not accessible during this date range" and Redirect
    this sharepoint site to someother site (Say http:// somesitename.xx.com) immidiately.
    I know very little about how to add Javascript in sharepoint webpart.
    Please provide the Javascript or any best alternate solution to my concern.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    From your description, my understanding is that you want to redirect sharepoint site to another site between 15th and 20th every month.
    I agree with what Sudip says. If you still want to use JS code,You could try these steps
    below:
    Open your site with SharePoint Designer.
    Click Master Pages in left navigation.
    Find file v4.master, and backup it(it is very important).
    Right click your v4.master,
    choose "Edit File in Adavance Mode".
    Add the code below into the <head/> tag.
    <script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.11.1.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script><script
    type="text/javascript">
    $(document).ready(function(){
    var today = new Date();
    var day = today.getDate(); // get current day
    var id = _spPageContextInfo.userid; // get the id of current logon in user
    var boolFlg = false;
    $.ajax({
       url: _spPageContextInfo.webAbsoluteUrl + "/_api/web/SiteGroups/GetByName(\'"+"sharepoint Owners"+"\')/Users", //get users in a specified group can access the sharepoint site from 15th to 20th every
    month
       type: "GET",
       headers: {"accept": "application/json;odata=verbose"},
       success: function (data) {
          if (data.d.results) {
             var src = data.d.results;
             for(var i = 0; i < src.length; i++){
                if(src[i].userid==id){ //check the logon in user in  the specified group or not
                   boolFlg = false;
                   break;
             if(!boolFlg){
                if(day <= 20 && day >=15){
                    alert("This site is not accessible during this date range"); // alert the message
                    location.href = "http:// somesitename.xx.com"; // redirect to another site
       error: function (xhr) {
          alert(xhr.status + ': ' + xhr.statusText);
    })</script>

    I have an Ipad 2 that I use to view an IP camera over a Wifi network.  The Ipad is in a vehicle that leaves the Wifi range and then returns to the range.  Upon returning to the range, the Ipad has trouble connecting to the network. (30 seconds)  The Ipad will eventually connect to the network, but by this time the driver is frustrated.  I have moved the antenna to within 20' of where the vehicle comes to a stop.  My Iphone does not have a problem connecting or reconnecting when used side by side with the Ipad.  Both the Ipad and Iphone have Otter box covers.  Has anyone run into this problem or have any suggestions?

    30 seconds to reconnect to a WiFi network is not unusual, especially in an environment where other radio signals on similar frequencies are present.  Sorry about that.
    You might get better times by letting the WiFi base station pick another channel.  But you might not.

  • Better Range -  Express or Extreme?

    Hi
    I'm looking to add another airport to my house, so I get better range out in the garden (my office is cool!) but I don't know if theres a reason to go for an Extreme or get another Express?
    I don't need music streaming, I have a modem and it doesn't need to be portable; but a bit of extra "power" would be good - is there a difference in the range between Express or Extreme?

    Hello velo fellow
    I just had an airport express and an airport extreme (with Dr. Bott omni antenna attached) next to each other in the same room on different channels, so you would think I could tell you.
    What I found was that the signal strength from both fluctuated radically (as measured in iStumbler), for reasons that I could not discern. I have asked in a few threads what the reasons for this fluctuations could be, but haven't received any answers that helped.
    Wish I could help you, but there is a voodoo aspect to this that I don't really understand yet.

  • Actiontec Mi424WR Rev. I versus Rev. D -- range and connection drops and speed

    Hello. I'm trying to figure out why the Rev. I is so much worse than the Rev. D for range and maintaining persistent connections at 30'+ in my home (two-story, single family). I have two smart phones, one tablet and a Blu-ray player, all 802.11n capable. I used the Rev. D for a few years with not many Internet problems overall (wired or wireless).  I recently I got two Rev. I routers -the first was replaced after malfunctioning and overheating- but they both exhibited the same range problem. The Rev. D can usually keep a connection to the far reaches of my home - an upstairs bathroom about 60' away (straight line) through four obstructions (walls and floor).  In that bathroom the speed test was slow of course (~1.8 Mbps) but the connection persisted for several minutes without dropping and reconnecting to the router even once. But the Rev. I could not keep a consistent connection to the tablet in the kitchen at only 40' away through only 2 walls (around two bends).  So I had to move the tablet a little closer within the kitchen - 30' away to  stream video consistently well. On my cell phone at 30' away I had to turn off the auto network switch to 4G just to keep a persistent connection to the Rev. I. With the Rev. D I never had any dropped connection anywhere in the kitchen on the tablet or the phones. Here's what I've learned so far in my own tests and reading other people's experiences here and elsewhere on the web. Any additional insight would be helpful. -- I have read that the signal strength of the Rev. I was reduced for security concerns. I can verify with a Wi-Fi scanner app on my phone that the signal strength is about 2-3dB less (about half as strong) for the Rev. I starting at about 25' away. That shouldn't necessarily cause the connection to the Rev. I router to drop and reconnect so often after 40' of distance. Any ideas why the connection drops so easily and often?  The signal strength at 0 distance (the antenna touching the phone) was about identical for both revisions. -- I have read that the Rev. I wireless mode should be in either performance (n only) or mixed (b/g/n) to maintain better connections but either setting made little difference. I have always kept the Rev. D router in mixed mode (b/g). From the antenna signal strength test above, I discovered only one antenna on the Rev. I router sends a signal so I doesn't seem like there is any beamforming being done in performance (n only) mode which is disappointing. Any idea why beamforming is not enabled?  Is the second antenna even used on the Rev. I? -- I have read that the antennas are too small on the Rev. I and a bigger antenna will help. That part I know is false especially if the longer antenna's impedance doesn't match the router's antenna port.  The "ideal" antenna length at 2.4GHz is about 2.5 inches and the Rev. I antenna looks that long. It seems inside the Rev. D antenna is a cable or some waveguide (the thicker, bottom 5" of the antenna) which might help reduce interference by moving the actual antenna portion of the Rev. D away from the router housing, the power cable and the data cables.   -- Sitting 10 feet away from the router, I didn't notice any difference on speed tests.  It was topping out at about 15-18Mbps for either router revision. So the whole point of having an 802.11n router for faster speed is moot. And at greater distances (40'+) I can't get a reliable connection so the Rev. D wins by default. If anyone has any ideas to make the Rev. I better I would like to try them. Verizon didn't want the Rev. D router back so I have both revisions to use. Thanks!

    I finally got the Quantum Gateway router (FiOS-G1100 rev 1.03 firmware 0.17.52) and it works great on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. In most areas of my home and on both bands I tested about 42 Mbps up/down using the Ookla speedtest app (my internet speed is 50/50 Mbps and I test about 58 Mbps using a wired connection). Previously with the Rev. D I was getting about 18 Mbps up/down in most areas of my home. In the farthest place in my home from the router (an upstairs bathroom) I get 22 Mbps up and 42 down which is impressive considering I was only getting 2Mbps with the Rev. D. The Quantum router has a similar signal strength profile as the old Rev D - about -18 dBm right near the router and about -70dBm to -80 dBm in the bathroom furthest from the router (55 feet straight line that goes up one floor and through three walls).  I used the Wifi Analyzer app to see the signal strength. Not many of my neighbors have 5 GHz routers so there are still lots of free channels up there. I also noticed the Quantum router has a power setting so the power can be turned down if someone is in an apartment or condo. But for me the lots in my neighborhood are 1/2 acre so I'll leave the power setting at 100%. I like having good speed in the far reaches of my home without using a repeater or extender.

  • Dynamic Ranges and Dynamic SQL

    Hi,
    I have built a table of ranges and would like to use them in an sql query. Ive had a look but cannot think of a way to get this to work.
    I have a table of fieldnames and a table of ranges. Does abap have a way of selecting a element from a table so I can generate the following sql.
    select * from table
      into some_table
      where
        'FIELD0' IN range[0] AND
        'FIELD1' IN range[1] AND
        'FIELD2' IN range[2] AND
        'FIELD3' IN range[3] AND
    I know how to build dynamic sql thats the easy bit. The hard bit is inserting a reference to a table element dynamically into the sql :S
    Any help would be much appretiated,
    Thanks,
    James

    hi,
      Yes, We can make use of Subroutine pools.
      This is from F1 help about dynamic where..
      1. This variant is exclusively for use with SELECT. The
         internal table itab can only have one field which must be of
         type C and not be greater than 72 characters. itab must be
         specified in parentheses with no blanks between the
         parentheses and the table name. The condition specified in
         the internal table itab must have the same form as a
         condition in the ABAP/4 source code. The following
         restrictions apply:
    - You can only use literals as values, not variables.
    <b>     - The operator IN cannot be used in the form f1 IN itab1.    </b>

  • TOSHIBA Please Read - Beta Testing and Developer Community

    Hello Jim,
    I wanted to respond to your posting about the status of the update but the thread has been locked, so I started a new one. Anyway, I was wondering if there was a chance that we could get a beta test version of the software provided to experienced and brave individuals that can report back to the dev team with various issues and bugs to be fixed?
    The public beta will not only appease the people angry at Toshiba for missing the deadline for the update, but also provide necessary feedback to the development team that can be used to create a more feature complete update. As an Android developer myself, I would take every oppurtunity to report bugs and issues and even provide code to help implement fixes for various issues if said source is availible. I believe it would be a great idea for Toshiba to create an open source development community on these forums and to provide us with bleeding edge code for us to implement and mess around with.
    Such communities already exist on various sites like XDA Developers but not with vendor support, if Toshiba provided a vendor-supported developer community around the Thrive and other Android devices such as the Excite and Folio. With a vendor supported community, we would have a place where Toshiba can make better software for the devices and developers and brave regular users can participate in the process of getting updates for our various devices. I believe that moving away from such a closed development environment would not only help Toshiba develop better devices and software, but also give the company a leg up on its competitors who do not have such a community pitching in allowing for better software to be coded.
    I hope that this message is read by someone at Toshiba that can make this happen, as the benefits are truly mutual, since Toshiba would be getting better software for its devices and developers get the resources and code needed to turn Toshiba into one of the best supporters of this great open-source project.
    If anyone from Toshiba would like to contact me to help coordinate such an undertaking, I may be reached at [email protected]
    Thank You For Your Time,
    Rob Gries
    Android Developer

    Hi Rob,
    Thanks for the thoughtful message. Your points are well made and, while I don't disagree that there are mutual benefits, Toshiba has no current plans for directly building or supporting a developer community.
    On the other hand, private beta testing for the Thrive product line was first launched last summer and I expect it to be ongoing as major software updates reach reasonably usable states within the development process. However, you won't see discussion of beta testing in the message boards because beta testers are under NDA.
    Thanks again for the thoughts and for your interest in developing for Thrive!
    Jim

I'm finding it frusrtrating and annoying since I cannot use Firefox 4.0 Beta 6. It works on other accounts excluding mine - What is this crap rigged or something? I have to resort to crappy Google Chrome and Safari since it messed up on both of my computers... Here's what it says when I double-click the short-cut: " Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features. " Although, it says the way to help - Can you like, dumb it down for me?
    ALSO, here's what it says when I go onto http://runescape.com - It says: An error occurred during a connection to www.runescape.com:443.
    Can't connect securely because the SSL protocol has been disabled.
    (Error code: ssl_error_ssl_disabled)

    See [[Secure Connection Failed]]

  • After AVG PC Tune up, software update message for security and stability update is available FireFox 3.6.18. Should I Update?

    My Dell laptop (Operating on Windows XP) was hit with multiple viruses - I could not open Mozilla Firefox or any other applications for that matter. After much time and many attempts, I was finally able to install and run an AVG Scan and then an AVG PC Tune up. 4,559 problems found and repaired. After the repairs, I received the following message:
    "Software Update - A security and stability update for Firefox is available: Firefox 3.6.18 - It is strongly recommended that you apply this update for Firefox as soon as possible. - an underlined link reading, "View more information about this update" and then 2 choices - "Ask Later" or "Update Firefox." Since part of the problem was with Firefox and some error messages pointed to that, I'm hesitant to click on any of the three options above. Can you help me to get past this error message, please. I am sending this from my home computer. Thank you. Diane

    Sometimes the updater gets in a funny state - Go to http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ and download the full installer. Close Firefox and run the installer
