Better to buy EXS or Kontact samples?

Hi,
I don't have Kontact - don't even know if it works with Logic... been searching... looks like it's not an easy fit.
Anyhow - thinking of buying some Indian sounds for the EXS - the company makes EXS and Kontact versions.
Seems Kontact comes with a GUI for these Indian Instruments - which looks cool - but I don't know how useful in the big picture...
Asking Logic users who use these things all the time if there's one format I should go for over the other.
Thanks in advance...

Kontakt works fantastic with Logic.  EXS is a decent sampler, but at this point it very much lags in features compared with other sample playback plugins.
Kontakt is also cross platform and works with any audio software so if you ever switch from Logic you'll still be able to use those samples.  I know some guys are huge EXS fans but for me going Kontakt would be a no brainer.
You do have to buy the Kontakt plugin for many libraries (some work with a free version of Kontakt).  This month they have upgrades and crossgrades on sale for half price, there are lots of third party Kontakt libraries that are eligible for the Kontakt crossgrade.

  • Is it worthy to buy a Zen with 2Gb and a SD card of 4 or is it better to buy a Zen with 4

    Hi.
I'm thinking on buying a Zen, but i'm a bit confused on the issue of if is it better to buy a Zen with 4Gb or a Zen with 2Gb and a SD card with 4Gb, because the diference on the pricefrom the 2Gb to the 4Gb fits a SD card with 4Gb, and will result in a Zen with 6Gb...
Does the zen works fine with the reading times of the SD cards? Or does the performance drops when reading from the card?
I would apreciate your experience/knowing opinions.
    Thanks

  • Is is better to buy an external Hard drive or an external CD RW Burner?

I am shopping to buy an external hard drive, too, to back up all my important data.....but could I buy a external CD RW Burner to burn back-up disc and it will do the same job. Or is is better to buy an external Hard drive to save the data? Will I be able to burn CD Back-ups from my external hard drive?
In other words, I am a little confused on whether to buy an external hard drive or external CD RW Burner? What is the best route?
Thanks for any body that can help with this issue.

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I suggest getting a external hard drive over getting an external CD-RW or DVD-RW. One of the major reason is that its great for backing up your internal hard drive; you can do it all in one place. One should always backup their hard drive just incase anything happens to your computer. One can't predict the day when a friend trips over their own feet; knocking your iBook on the floor with a huge crash. The most annoying thing to carry around when traveling is the Mac OS X install discs. I hate bringing them with me because I am in constant fear that I will loose them. The reason I bring them with me is because if something happens while I am away, I can troubleshoot my problem. I can startup from the install disc and then run Disk Utility, Archive and Install, Erase, and partition my hard drive. Once someone has a problem on the road; they will never leave their house without the discs. Instead of carrying around those discs, I partitioned one of my external hard drives into three sections, one for backup (140Gb), one for Mac OS X Tiger (10Gb), and the last one is for Panther (10Gb. I gave my girlfriend an iBook and she has Panther on it). This means I am equipped to startup my computer without using my internal drive.
Have you ever lost your iTunes library or your TurboTax data? Well, by backing up your hard drive (internal to external), you can save all your vital data incase something happens. You will find it a life saver if anything ever happens.
If you are looking into external hard drives, I suggest anything from LaCie, SmartDisk, or Western Digital
I recommend the LaCie D2 Hard Drive Extreme w/ Triple Interface, SmartDisk CrossFire, or the WD Dual Option.
I use a SmartDisk CrossFire for both my iTunes library as well as my iPhoto library. If you need help moving your iTunes library you might want to look at Knowledge Base Document #301748 explains How to Move Your iTunes Library.
I don't think you want an external burner of any kind for backing files because it will cost you a lot more in the end. You will have to use multiple discs for one big folder like iTunes. It is a pain and is also expensive. You can easily loose a disc or scratch it up.

  • EXS 'send to sampler' question.

OK so I've started doing remixes where I'm bringing all the audio into a project and using the new logic 9 'send to sampler' to chop up the beats etc.
This is all great, but I also want these new sampler instruments to appear in my main EXS library so I can use them on other projects, but when you pull up a new project they don't appear, they only appear within the project they were created for.
I mean I could transfer them all manually, but it's a bit long winded. Therefore has anybody found a way of shifting these temporary EXS files to their main library permanently within logic itself?

    Bill,
not sure but you might find the below info illuminating; picked this up at the Digital Village Blog http://blog.dv247.com/logic-9-review-convert-sampler-instrument/2842/
"A few important things to note here:
When converting to a Sampler Instrument, there are two choices: By Transient Markers or by Regions. The behaviour is significantly different for each method.
Transient markers are automatically created when Flex mode is enabled, converting to Sampler Instrument by transients, or enabling Transient Editing mode in the Sample Editor. These transient markers may not be exactly where you want them. The only way to adjust this is through the Sample Editor.
The Sampler Instrument produced does not make individual samples (slices), it merely creates zones which have the Start time offset to produce the desired effect. These zones reference the original audio file, which is probably stored in with your project (assuming that you have ’saved with assets’). More on this later.
If no Project folder has previously been created, the resulting Sample Instrument (.exs) file is stored in the default Logic directory (users:Music:logic), and the EXS file merely references the original audio file, wherever it may be stored. If the Project has been saved “with assets”, but not with ‘Copy exs instruments or samples to Project Folder’ ticked, the EXS instrument file is still created, but the audio sample is still referencing the audio file in the project folder, not any separate sample file. Saving the project with ‘Copy Exs inst. & Samples’ ticked does indeed copy the audio (sample) and the exs instrument to new directories within the project folder.
If you slice the region by transients (by first enabling Flex mode, then using the contectual menu to “Slice by Transients” (or the old Strip Silence method), and then convert to a Sampler Instrument using the ‘by regions’ function, the individual regions are converted to new audio files which are separately referenced by the EXS instrument produced. The above comments regarding the resulting audio files, sampler instruments and any samples still apply.
The crucial issue with all of this is that the exs instrument is not added to your main sampler library, and the samples remain in the project folder. One could easily lose these Instruments and samples! To be of more general use, it is necessary to open the EXS Instrument Editor for the relevant sampler instruments, and use the ‘Export Sampler Instrument and Sample files’ function to save them into your main sample library.
    Hope this helps

  • I am thinking of being a new macbook pro with retina but after reading the problems with overheating would i be better of buying a dell ??

i am thinking of buying a macbook pro retina 15 but after reading reports of this overheating am i better of buying a dell ?? i already have a imac that has started to overheat when put to sleep unless i close safari down.

Good grief no. I've just done a consulting job that involved Dells, and if you think there are some issues with Apple, wait until you try to deal with Dell. The tech support is awful, they transfer you 4 times then hang up. The product is marginal at best. Google that if you want confirmation.
While Apple machines have had some issues on specific models, for the most part my experience has been very favorable. Especially if you have Applecare. Take the computer in if you have a problem and let the Genius Bar fix it for you.
Your "overheating" issues are probably due to something like Flash running in the background, which just continues to grow in size and suck up machine resources the longer it's on.

  • Is it better to buy an iPhone5 at an Apple store or thru a retailer like Verizone?

Is it better to buy an iPhone5 at an Apple store or a retail store like Verizon?

FYI, this is the iPad forum, iPhone forum is here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/iphone/using_iphone
With that said, it depends.  If you are going to buy an unlocked iPhone, only Apple sells those. If you are going to buy one with a plan attached to a carrier, it would make sense to go to the carrier and see what kinds of plans they offer. Rather than buying one from Apple with a predfined plan.

  • Is it better to buy or pay a subscription to InDesign for one user?

I have a client who wishes to buy InDesign. There will only be one user. Is it better to buy it outright or pay a monthly subscription?

Unless your client wants to use 3+ year old Creative Suite 6 for a one time purchase, the only option is a subscription

If I'm flying overseas and I want to watch a movie on my Ipad is it better to buy or rent?

You can pause it as many times as you want. You can also replay it if within the allowed time period
How long do I have to watch a rented movie?
You have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and 24 hours (in the US) or 48 hours (elsewhere) after you've started viewing to finish it. Once the rental period expires, the movie will disappear from your iTunes library

  • Better to buy refurb or use education discount for new?

I have a 4 year old 15 inch macbook pro, and would like to sell it and get a new one.
I can get the education pricing, as I teach at a university.  So, I am comparing 2 options:
New (July 2014) 15 in Macbook pro, 2.5 GHz quad-core i7, 16 GB RAM, NVIDIA 2 GB card, 1 TB flash drive - $3199 new, but $2949 with education pricing (Canadian dollars), and also get $110 Apple gift card (so essentially costing $2839)
or there is an Oct. 2013 15 inch model w/ these specs: 2.6 GHz quad-core i7, 16 GB RAM, NVIDIA 2 GB card, 1 TB flash drive - $2719 Canadian
so the refurbished model is $120 less, and slightly faster processor.
But are there any advantages to the new one?  Eg. is the processor different (and better)?  Is the battery life better on the newer one?
I gather the case, and the components are mostly the same, but for the little extra cost, should I get the new one?
Would the newer one have better resale value 4-5 years down the road?

  • I want to update my macbook from 10.5.8 to mountain lion. Is it better to buy a new laptop or buy the updates as i cant find the 10.6.8 software DVD anywhere?

I need to update my macbook to the latest mountain lion. At the moment i have 10.5.8. I am considering buying a new Macbook pro just so that i can get the new software, but is it better to simply just buy the updates? The thing is it that i can not find the 10.6.8 software on the apple store and a lot of places have said to look on the mac app store but i dont have it as i have 10.5.8...
    Thank you

SL is a DVD that you can purchase by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE.  $19 for single use disk, $29 for 5-user license disk.
Whether or not you *need* ML features (SL will give you AppStore as a icon, and the AppStroe lets you buy ML) depends on you.  Go to the TechSpec page from ML link on apple.com.

  • EXS send to sampler warning.

    OK, *LARGE WARNING*
For those of you using the new "send to sampler option" a lot, make sure when saving that you have the assets/ *copy EXS instruments to project folder* and *copy EXS samples to project folder* selected.
I've just pulled up two projects from last week and the "*send to sampler*" instruments samples have completely disappeared, including a six hour cutting up old breaks for my library session which I hadn't transferred to my main EXS library yet.
    Good lord.
Those options have since been selected and it seem to be OK.
But we will see... said the blind man.

Well yeah, I know I can do it this way, but that's loads of steps.
What I thought, or rather what I though would have been possible as a "Send to sampler" option, would have been an auto convert transients to individual regions and save as individual regions in a designated file, before automatically loading those sample back to the EXS.
Then I could have saved and indexed those instruments in my main library, not some useless virtual nonsense that is impossible to keep track of. Like I would do with a real physical sampler.
I though that's what the transient feature would have been.
I guess my expectations of this feature were just too good to be true.
Never mind, maybe next year eh.
I give you 5 brownie point for the sentiment though.

  • Exs and loading samples.

installed L9 last week. all seems o.k but just tried to load multiple samples with problems.
1stly, i choose contiguous zones with a start note from C1 yet the samples are laid out the entire keyboard from C-2 and not the space of 1 note.
any ideas?. is this a bug in 9??
    Thanks

iv seen from some other posts that this is a bug. also, the samples i loaded, which are a set of arabic style drums and percussion, as i played them they seem to get quite in volume about 1 bar in and then come up in volume. the EXS is set to 64 voices. i never had a problem like that in the past.
anyway, iv loaded them up in battery 3 and no problem.
these problems and the stuffing around renders the exs useless for creating your own samples apple... sorry, i mean banana.
