Better to Consolidate Library or Import all songs again?

I can't Consolidate my iTunes Library on my internal HD because there is not enough HD space to copy all files again.
I believe I have two main choices.
1) Delete all music files on the internal HD (I have multiple backup copies of everything) and create a new iTune Library (hold down Option key when launching iTunes) and copy all music files from the multiple HD locations, (this music is in iTunes Media folders) into the new iTunes Library ( home > Music > iTunes > iTunes Media > Music ) by opening the newly created iTunes and use File > "Add to Library" command.
OR
2) Delete all music files on the internal HD ( I have multiple backup copies of everything) and go to File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Library
Questions:
A) Will using method #1 produce different results than using method #2?
B) How do I manage or in some way control the way iTunes will operate if I choose to Consolidate Library?
I like the concept of method #1 because it feels like a clean install, something I try to do as much as possible when I'm having problems or want to make significant changes.
The reason I want to do this in the first place is my iTunes has become sluggish, taking many seconds to respond to click commands. I was told I should Consolidate Library and this will improve my iTunes performance by better organizing the music in the iTunes Library.
Concerns:
#1 I assume if I use method #1 I will loose all my Playlists, Plays and Ratings type of data. This is the downside. I can export my Playlist as XML files and reimport them to the new iTunes Library yes? That doesn't take care of my ratings info, which is probably my second most important concern.
#2 I'm leary of leaving iTunes to "Consolidate Libray" because I'm not sure exactly how iTunes will handle the 80k songs I have taken so long to load, organize, classify, re-name, add lyrics and countless other info presumably contained in the meta data. What could go missing or get mixed up?
Thanks for any advice.

You are trying to get all your music into one location on external?
Do this...
Quit iTunes.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes folder to external drive.
Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
Go to iTunes prefs > Advanced. Make sure iTunes media folder location is set to the current iTunes folder you are using on the external.
Tick Keep iTunes media folder organized.
Tick Copy files ot iTunes media folder when adding to libary.
iTunes menu File > LIbrary > Organize library. Tick Consolidate.
Let it finishand everything in iTunes is on in the iTunes folder on the external.
You can delete Music/iTunes/ on the interanl.

I am using a Dell and can't import the CD I need because the window doesn't automatically pop up. How do I fix this? Any thoughts?

You could try my script ConvertFormat and see if you like the results. Would be easier than inserting the CDs and correcting the tag info again. Just be aware this is a one-way trip. Once you've thrown away some quality to shrink the files you can't get it back without going back to the source. You may better off investing in a bigger drive.
If you just want to squeeze more on the iPod you can use the built-in iTunes option to convert files to a lower bitrate as they are added to the device.

  • How do you import all songs from a shared library?

I have 862 songs in my iTunes library on the family computer, and i would like to transfer them to my iTunes on my laptop. I already have home sharing on, and I can see the shared library on the iTunes on my laptop, but is there a way i can transfer all the songs from the shared library to the iTunes on my laptop without having to import each song on its own? Thank you in advance.

what you want to see in iTunes is this (view from my iMac's iTunes seeing the library on my Mini)
once the homeshared library has loaded, two buttons will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes window, being settings and import.
now you should be able to import any content from any shared library by selecting (highlighting) it and clicking the import button.
via settings, you can select which newly purchased content is transferred automatically to homeshared libraries

  • Can not import all songs from computer HD

only some of my songs import from my HD to Itunes library. How can I get all of the to import. they are all mp3 files.
      Windows XP

I have the same problem but I have some more info onwhat happens with my songs. First of all I want to say that all the songs I am talking about are in MP3 format with all the tags completed correctly.
I have two computers and iTunes on both of them and I had noticed this behaviour when importing miscellaneous songs into my main computer's iTunes library. So before I tried importing my collection of 2800 songs from full albums into my existing iTunes library I used my second computer to verify that all the songs would be imported into an empty library, and they were. However, when I went back to my main computer and imported the same songs, from the same folder structure, iTunes skipped several of the songs.
Can somebody please tell me if iTunes has some kind of integrated filter for removing duplicate entries when importing MP3 files.
    Thanks

  • ITunes will not import all songs!

On every CD that I've tried to import songs from, iTunes won't import every song. It just freezes up. I know that it isn't the CD drive because all of the songs were ripped into Windows Media Player. I have even tried to import just one song, but still the same problem. Some songs will be in the Library before the freeze, but will disappear after it. On a few CDs, only half of the tracks were imported. Please help me!

First look at the CD and see if its protected.
Secondly goto the PC makers site (If the CD Burner came witht he PC when you bought it) and look for updates for your model, like Firmware updates for the CD ROM and BIOs/chipset updates for the system.

  • Itunes freezing and having to sync ALL songs again !!

    1. I sync 3200 songs from iTunes
    2. I listen on iPod
    3. I download 10 more songs into iTunes
    4. When I reconnect iPod it freezes iTunes and iTunes has to be shutdown
    5. Reopen iTunes
    6. Ipod is empty and ALL songs have to be synced again when all I want is to update with 10 new songs???
Any help is MUCH appreciated !!!

Quite possibly when iTunes got shutdown during sync is messed up files on iPod so that it looked empty. iTunes seeing an empty iPod proceeded to fill it up again.

  • Moved Library and Lost All Songs

I have a Windows XP laptop and an external HD. The goal is to have my whole CD library imported to the external HD using ITunes. However, I import the CD's at work to my laptop HD because I can't carry the external around. So, when I copy and then move the location from laptop to external, then delete the original copy from my laptop, it doesn't get mapped, and then I would have to go through song by song to edit info and find change where it's newly located. Can I do it differently so that this doesn't happen (maybe MOVE in Windows Explorer instead of COPY)? If there is a way to prevent this in the future, is there anything I can do about the stuff that's already misplaced? Thanks. B

    Hi Benjamin -
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You may have better luck in the iTunes for Windows area, but in the Mac version, in the file menu, there is an option for "Add to Library" If you chose the music folder on your external hard drive, it would find all of the files located there and add them to your music library. You could continue to do this each time you copy music to that folder without having duplicate entries in the library.
Also, if you try to play a song and it can't be found, I believe iTunes will prompt you to find the location. If this happens, it might find the rest of the files that are associated with that file. (Try the suggestion above first, though) if the file has already been imported, but can't be found, and you add a file that is identical to the missing file, it will recognize it as that song and change the link.
    Good luck!

  • Why can't I import all songs? The computer is authorized but the error message says that it isn't to play some songs...HELP!

I have turned on Home Sharing and Imported most of the orginal library but certain songs won't import. The Itunes tell me that the computer isn't authorized but when I log in it says that it is already authorized. This is very frustrating, please help.

You need to select what you want to import first.

  • How 2 import all songs already on ur comp.

I had a bunch of songs, like 5000, on my comp.....w/ itunes....most of them were in AAC format. I dont know much about comps but i imported them from cds and itunes converted them to AAC format upon importing. My comp got messed up like a couple months ago and those songs were lost and i had 2 re-import them....I finally got done and my comp messed up again....and i opened itunes and the songs werent there. And the first time i opened itunes after the second mess up it offered 2 search for any songs stored on my comp.....and i clicked no....but now i realize that the songs are still on my comp....just not in itunes....and i could send them 2 itunes without a problem but i have 2 do it song by song which will take 4ever......is there any quick way 2 do this....I looked in itunes and couldnt find anything 2 click on that suggests doing what i want but maybe i missed it.....and help would be appreciated

In iTunes, go to the taskbar, click on File and Add Folder To Library. Find your music folders and so forth. It will put them back into iTunes.

  • 80gb Ipod not importing all songs

    Hi all
I am having a problem with my 80gb 5th gen ipod
I have had it since january this year and it has been working fine till yesterday when it froze so i reset it and plugged it into itunes and it lost all the songs of the pod so i synced it up but it only imports up to letter M and doesnt import anymore then that
I have installed the new version of Itunes 7.3 and made sure i am on the correct software for the ipod 1.2.1 but it still isnt importing
Is it a problem with the ipod does anyone think or does anyone know how to correct this?

    Hi kel524uk,
Is your iTunes upgraded to the latest version, 7.3.1? (there are two versions: 7.3 and 7.3.1).
To download the latest version of iTunes, go to this page:
    Download iTunes - 7.3.1.3
Also, have you tried fully restoring your iPod in iTunes? For instructions on how to restore an iPod, see this article:

  • Ipod does not import all songs in itunes

Does anyone know why when I plug in my ipod it will import a few of the songs then a message pops up that says attempting to copy to the disk failed. The disk could not be read from or written to, please help!!!

Another thing to be aware of is what format your files are in. If you have an Ipod Photo like mine it won't play .mp4 file format so when I first got my ipod it would only load the first 70 some songs, those songs were already .m4a, then it would give the same error message you discribed. I thought my ipod was hosed until I finally went through with a program I got of the internet that was a file extention converter tool and renamed all my files from .mp4 to .m4a then everything worked fine.

  • Can you rebuild a library to include all songs in your music folder?

    Hey good people,
My copy of iTunes was running on an iBook with my library on an external hard drive. Since the drive was often unlugged, I routinely got excalamtion point signs by files that iTunes thought were missing.
They weren't missing. The drive was just unplugged.
Well, over the years, I got many "faux-missing" files confused with actually missing files, and deleted a number of songs from my library that actually existed safe and sound on my hard drive.
Now I want to make my library right. I want to have an accurate list of everything that's on the drive, only I don't know how to do that.
I made the mistake of dragging the entire library back into iTunes, and succeded it duplicating my entire library. There must be some way to fix this that I'm just not seeing yet.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I made the mistake of dragging the entire library back into iTunes, and succeded it duplicating my entire library.
By "library", do you mean the' iTunes Music folder location' as set in the preferences?
When dragging (or adding by the File menu) this folder to iTunes, recent versions of iTunes don't create duplicate entries in the Library or duplicate files.
What kind of duplicates do you have? Duplicate files or duplicate entries in the Library.

  • After Every Restart, Mail Imports All Mail Again

Every time I restart my IMac, and turn on Mail (I use an AOL account), the Inbox shows Incoming Messages, and a Status Bar.  It is showing thousands on incoming mail items.  It only takes 5 minutes or so, but why is it doing this?  Is there something to do to prevent this?

I would leave out the "goodies" until
    A. it works
    B. it is backed up to another hard drive
    C. then try the hard drive as well as SSD
    D. not everything out there works with 10.6.5
    E. not everything works in 64-bit kernel mode
    F. None of the Above ( but something else at work )

  • New 6th generation ipod - loaded my library onto the iPod  all songs are greyed out and I cannot add a playlist.

I have purchased a new 6th generation ipod and registered it with Apple- it has loaded all my library onto the iPod but when the library is displayed all songs are greyed out and I cannot add a playlist. Can anyone help me ?

The content that you are viewing on your Nano via iTunes is grayed out since your iPod is set up for automatic syncing with your iTunes library.  If you want to be able to manually manage your contents (which is sounds like you are trying to do), you must enable the Manually manage music option from under your iPod's Summary tab in iTunes.

  • PLEASE HELP ME! ( all songs erased on pod, will not update)

Hello, here is the deal. I plugged my ipod mini into my labtop to update some songs i purchased from i tunes. Instead of updating it erased all the songs on my i pod. My software is up to date and my library is intact but it won't tranfer onto my pod. My pod is completely empty and will not upload my library
Message reads: songs for i pod "lazybones" can not be updated because all of playlists selected for updating no longer exist
I would really appreciate some help here. I have tried everything i can think of, short of erasing my entire library and importing all my CD's back into i tunes.

    Check this out.
