Better to convert from H.264 or mpeg4 AVC H.264?

I've read the threads related to the need to convert video shot in both H.264 and mpeg4 AVC H.264 before editing in FCE. But I am wondering if there are any pros or cons on which would result in the better quality.
Do you experts think it makes a difference? Once you use Mpeg Streamslip is it all the same?
I am asking this because those seems to be the available formats for shooting video with the point and shoot cameras currently available. The Canon format is H.264. Nikon s6000 uses the mpeg4 AVC H.264. With the Canon the workflow involves importing the video from the camera using the supplied Canon software, then converting it with Mpeg SS, before importing it into FCE. Log and transfer doesn't work. When I converted the video straight from the SD card with Mpeg SS, the resulting video when imported into Final Cut required rendering. Using the same setting after importing it with the Canon software, does not require rendering.
I just bought the Canon and I am wondering if I exchanged it with the Nikon if I could avoid the intermediate step or if the quality would be any different. Any thoughts?

Yes, sorry, FTR is For The Record, just like FYI is For Your Information. (and that is a smile.)
It must be so frustration for you folks to have to keep explaining this to newbies. I was thinking perhaps this forum needs one of those sticky, permanent answers called "Codec for Dummies." Or Tom you could add a primer to your next edition of the book.
So the proper terminology when referring to H.264 is codec not format? Unfortunately the manufacturers don't help us much. This from the Nikon website:
Movie Modes
Video file format: MPEG-4 AVC H.264
Audio file format: AAC stereo
HD: 1280 x 720p / 30fps
Standard TV: 640 x 480 / 30fps
Small Size: 320 x 240 / 30fps
HDMI output: mini-connector Type C
HDMI cable not included
Now I understand why our techs at work would always say not all Quicktime .mov files are the same whenever I asked what format people should use when sending us digital video!
FTR or FYI, I did an experiment and shot a bit of video at the camera store using the Nikon s6000 on my SD card and just converted it with MPEG streamclip then imported it into FCE directly. It comes in fine with no need to render it, unlike the Canon file where I have to use the Canon software to import it and then, MPEG streamclip and then import it to FCE. Saves a step.
So I am going to take the Canon back and exchange it for the Nikon. (Another reason for me to be a Nikon shooter!
Thanks for your patience.

  • Converting from H.264 to DV

I need to convert some .MOVs that are H.264 to DV, because they need to output on Canopus Video output device that requires DV.
The .MOV looks great. The DV output from Quicktime Pro looks pretty crappy, even though the file is nine times bigger. There are not a lot of settings for me to try . . . I have the setting on BEST and have tried various combinations of interlacing etc . . .
Is this just how it is? Is there a way for the DV to look as good as the H.264?
    (alternatively, is there a way to send H.264 movies to a TV/projector without using a Canopus-type DV/Firewire device?) (except I'm out of PCI slots . . . )
    Quicktime Pro 7.62

Another bit of information. If I export from iMovie using the same exact settings on the same video files I don't get the flashing colors.

  • Which is "better" when converting from VOB: MPG, AVI or DV or ???

    Hi,
I am not a techie, but following the advice of posted by Steve Grisette, I was able to download the software from Squared5, which allows me to convert my old VOB's into other formats. For some reason, I chose the MPEG conversion and they do play in my 9.0. I have other choices. I think Steve suggested the AVI format.
Can someone succinctly me tell me what is the bottom line for someone who wants to import VOB files and edit them eventually and restore them because the color on the 1950's film had washed out. Which is best?
    Many thanks!
    Rod

Thank you Steve and Hunt......one more clarifier (please):
I do the conversion and the file property is:
    VTS_01_1.avi
How do I know if this is type 1 AVI or Type 2 AVI, which, as you say, is best?
    Thanks,

  • Does converting from dvd to mpeg4 reduce file size?

Ive searched over and over and cant find the answer to this.
I ripped the DVD Bruce Almighty onto my computer using DVD decrypter. I then converted it using Videora Ipod converter. The ripped file was something like 6.5 gigs. The converted file is only 660MBs. Is this normal ?
Also I have seen it happen opposite, where I downloaded a clip of a diamond store robbery and it started as a 9,791KB Windows Media Audio/Video file and after i converted it, it became a 40,990KB Mpeg-4 Movie file.
Any help or explanation is greatly apreciated
Oh and I watched bruce almight and it worked great, im definately not complaining that it took up less space, just curious of why and if the videora default settings are possibly converting to a smaller bit rate or something that is going to reduce quality when watching on ipod or itunes.

yes thats compleatly normal. You're looking at 3 differant video formats that all compress differantly and efficiantly. The ipod uses Mpeg4 and h.264 which is a more efficiant version of mpeg4. What you have to rememver is when converting from other formats, the video becomes that new format and losses its old compression bit rate (how much data is prossesed per second) and format and gets a new bit rate and new format. Like when I edit video, its done in a format called DV on which 10 minutes of video takes 2 gigs. But the finished product becomes a dvd whichi can fit 1 hour of comparable video in the same space. Let me explain more.
Mpeg2 is the video format of dvds. Mpeg2 is a pretty effiant codec but requires a pretty high but rate to be acceptable. Mpeg4 can do with less data and achieve around the same quality. Also you have to remember that vidora is resizing the video to a lower resolution making the video even smaller.
As for a video getting bigger, thats normal as well. As I said is that the new file will achieve a new bit rate. Mpeg or wmv may need to be reencoded at a higher mpeg 4 bit rate to keep around the same quality of the original video. If you encoded the video at the same bit rate as the old video, youll loose alot of quaity form being double compressed.
All this is hard to explain if you know nothing about video formats and how convertion works. Hope some of this makes sence

    You are welcome.
    convert and store externally?
What versions of iPhoto and Aperture is your wife using? With both iPhoto 9.3 or later and Aperture 3.3 or later she simply could open her iPhoto library in Aperture and be done, since these versions are using a unified library format.

  • Sony -  HDR-XR350V  - HD: MPEG4 AVC/H.264; SD: MPEG2

    Considering a Sony - HDR-XR350V - HD: MPEG4 AVC/H.264; SD: MPEG2
Please help - I have been using search and spent about 45 min with a Sony sales person on the phone today, but would love to hear from someone using this camera or an expert who can interpret the specs.
Is this camera a true AVCHD camera and will it work seamlessly with FCE?
I understand, if it is compatible, that I would have to use Log and Transfer and the files would be converted to Apple Intermediate Codec (fairly large file size) I would plan to use an external drive as scratch disk for any large projects.
Here is the link to the spec page for the camera.
    http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=1055 1&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666073203#specifications
My ultimate use for camera is editing, using iDVD to create DVD for use on TV, or being able to upload short video projects to Facebook or You tube.
For these shorter projects will this camera also work well with iMovie 09
I am so frustrated trying to find a good camera that will work well with FCE - my old Sony (only two years old has died) I had to use Mpeg Streamclip to convert its files - large learning curve but mastered it. I don't want to go through another complicated process to begin editing again with a new camera ($271 for repair and 90 day warranty doesn't make sense to fix the old one).

Tom - thank you so much - so if for any reason I would want to use SD I could convert with Mpeg streamclip like I did for my old camera. Not sure why I would do that, but just wondered.
I believe the Sony - HDR-XR350V camera has several different settings for filming - are you able to tell me how to set the camera or should I just cross that bridge when I get it. I would like to use the highest quality setting. The Sony sales guy said it has Progressive and Interlace settings - That is over my head. For going to iDVD for play on a TV what would I use. I will be ordering the camera on Monday.
You were the patient one who got me going in the right direction with my old camera - so glad you responded. I have your book and have attended a lot of One to One sessions. Love FCE and just want to get going again.

  • How do I convert from PAL to NTSC in compressor?

I have a project I converted from mp4 file to Apple Pro Res to edit it in FCP.  I exported using Compressor and tried to import the files to DVD Studio Pro.  It said it can't put PAL files into an NTSC project.  I didn't even realize it was filmed in PAL (yes, I have the rights to use the footage).  How do I convert the files from PAL to put it into FCP...in Compressor?  If so, how?  Thanks for any help!

To  convert the 25fps PAL file to a 29.97fps file staying within the ProRes codec:
    • Open up compressor. In the Settings window select: Apple>Formats>Quicktime>ProRes 422
    • Select the "Duplicate Selected Setting" icon in the upper left of the Settings window
    • This creates duplicate of the preset that you can edit
    • Select the preset copy and, in Inspector, give it a new name (something like ProRes PAL>NTSC)
    • In Encoder>Video Settings>Frame rate - and change the frame rate to 29.97
    • In Frame Controls> turn them on and set Resize Filter and Rate Conversion to BETTER.  (If so set them to BEST, be prepared for a long wait)
    • In the Geometry tab, set the Frame Size to 720x480 (you don't say if the file is 16:9 or 4:3)
    • Submit the file and go have dinner. Depending on the length of the file, it may take hours.
    Have fun.

  • What is better when converting analog video for FCE, Canopus100/110/300/or5

    All,
What is better when converting analog video for FCE, Canopus100/110/300/or500? I have a new MACPRO with FCE HD and I wanted to convert some of my older video that was recorded on a HI8 Camcorder... Thanks.

I have the ADVC-100 (older model) and ADVC-110. They are identical except that the ADVC-110 does not come with an AC power adapter. Currently sells for about $220USD. If all you need to do is convert from HI8 tapes, the ADVC100/110 will do the job quite nicely.
The ADVC300 adds some enhancements for video signal cleanup, but at a higher price. Currently sells for about $450USD. The ADVC500 is overkill for home use.

  • Convert from PSE10 to Lightroom - metadata concerns

After one too many frustrations with PSE, I've been looking for an alternative program.  I don't care about editing - metadata (Organizer type features) are my focus.  I looked at a few non-Adobe programs - a big problem with them is I can't import my PSE10 catalog, with 12,000 photos.  On the PSE forum, the most common advice was to go to Lightroom, so I was holding out hope for that.  However, I've played with the LR 5 trial for half a day now, and as far as I can tell, it doesn't make good use of the PSE catalog either!  This is very disappointing for me, but I'm wondering if some of you folks can show me things I'm missing.
I'm looking into to converting from PSE10 to LR 5 on a Windows 7 machine.  I have about 12,000, half TIFs from scanned images and half JPGs from digital cameras.  As I said, I only care about metadata management.  My focus is genealogy, so getting the original dates of scanned pictures captured is very important, and these often are only roughly known.
My main issue is that it seems to me that LR is taking the metadata from the photo files, not the catalog.  I used the LR feature "Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog".  The reason I say this is for two reasons:
    (1) When PSE10 writes tags to files, it adds to any tags that are already there.  So although PSE10 shows only the updated set of tags in the GUI, the photo files have both old and new tags.  After doing the LR Upgrade PSE Catalog, I'm seeing old and new tags.  It appears to be ignoring what is in the catalog and looking at the file.  (As far as I know, the old tags are not present in the PSE catalog anymore, so it can't be looking at the converted catalog.)
    (2) PSE10 allow you to tag photos with incomplete dates (e.g. no time, no day and/or no month).  But if PSE10 has an incomplete date, it won't write it to the file (very annoying for working with historical photos).  But LR does not show these partial dates, it only shows complete dates.  In this case, I'm not sure if LR is showing the metadata in the photo files, or if it dropped the PSE10 catalog date info during the "Upgrade".
So my main question is, am I missing something with regards to the import, or am I correct in my impression that this "Upgrade PSE Catalog" isn't doing much of anything?  (ExifTool shows all the metadata in the photo files -- much more complete than LR for that matter -- so what am I gaining by importing the PSE catalog into LR?)
A couple other miscellaneous questions if I may:
-- In PSE10, there is a notes field in the metadata, which goes into XMP-album in the photo files.  Does LR not support this?  As far as I can tell, LR supports only a few XMP namespaces, with no support for others.
-- In LR in the Folder pane, I have no scroll bar, so I can only see the first few entries.  This seems to be a serious bug to me.  Or am I missing something?
-- It appears in LR that one cannot show your entire catalog in the main pane sorted by folder then by file name.  Is this correct?  (This also seems to be a major drawback to me!)
-- When I try to change the date of a photo (Edit Capture Time in LR), it forces you to enter a complete date/time, unlike PSE10.  Overall, it is much easier to manage these dates in PSE, it seems.  Does LR handle incomplete dates to any level?
-- When I did my PSE import/"Upgrade", it assigned the wrong file names to some of my photos (it used file names from other photos in the catalog).  Is this a known issue?
I imagine I have a very unusual vantage point, but at this point it seems that PSE is far superior to LR!  And I'm not happy with PSE10!!  Anyways, thanks in advance for your input.  Sorry about the long post - wasn't sure if I should divide it up or not.
    Bill

This is a reply to the post from John R. Ellis...
You mentioned "Adobe has never bothered to fix...".  Note that the last post by Michel B in this thread
    http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78779&page=2
indicates that PSE11 can handle this.
You say "After importing.... I used ExifTool to append..."  Did you do this file by file, or with a script?  A Perl script?  (The reason I ask is that I would have to learn Perl, so I would have to decide how much this means to me...)
Regarding your suggestion to use fake dates
    "(e.g. "1970" => "1/1/1970 00:00:00")"
I've been aware of this since I read it in your psedbtool material a year or two ago, but I've resisted making such changes.  When dealing with historical photos, you want the ambiguity.  In fact, you'd like to use things like "About 1970" and such.  I wish the photo metadata community would get on board with that.
Regarding your point about catalog conversion, for me it sounds like it would be just as good to import the photo files directly.  (Better for me, I think, since converting the catalog seems to lose the folder hierarchy in the LR Folder view for some reason.  However, if I'm going to import the photo files directly, then LR has no advantage for me over any other program that I can see.  The ExifTool GUI utility does a much better job with the metadata in general - the key drawback for me being the fact that you have to type out the keywords each time you want to add one to photo.  Looking at the ACDSee Pro trial, that appears to handle metadata better than any of the Adobe products - the critical drawback being that it uses its proprietary XMP namespaces, meaning interoperability issues.  LR has drawbacks for me, such as not being able to sort by folder than filename in the main view pane and the lack of support for other XMP namespaces (and the Folder pane scrollbar thing).  So at this point I'm in a state of depression.  As far as I can tell, I only have a partial solution to my problems - upgrade from PSE10 to PSE11.  Truly a depressing notion!!

  • Hypertext links are not always preserved from Word to PDF, using Aperçu or Adobe, depending on OS 10 or Lion. Why? This generally works perfectly in Windows. Why are Apple and Adobe unable to correctly handle links when converting from Word to PDF?

Hypertext links are not always preserved from Word to PDF, using Aperçu or Adobe, depending on OS 10 or Lion. Why? This generally works perfectly in Windows. Why are Apple and Adobe unable to correctly handle links when converting from Word to PDF?
Depending on the system version, and Office Word version:
    - a pure URL link starting with http or even www sometimes works in PDF, either produced by Aperçu or Adobe, sometimes does not work;
    - other kind of links where the text under display is not a URL, never work!
I like everything with Apple computers and software, except PDF generation. Output files are usually bigger in size, and no better quality, than under Windows. Furthermore, it is weird that something as common as hyperlinks does not work correctly!
I related this question with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, but the problem is still there with Mac OS Lion.
This problem seems to have been around for years, without any proper solution from Apple and/or Adobe! To me, this is very embarrassing!

    Greetings NoNameGiven,
If I understand the problem correctly (I’m not sure I do) you would prefer ‘iii’ to be read as “eye eye eye” rather than “three”? The alt text property is the only way that I know of to make this happen. Hope this helps.

  • How do I maintain column formatting when converting from PDF to Excel?

How do I maintain column formatting when converting from PDF to Excel? All info is no longer on the lines or in the columns they started out being in? Any help would be appreciated.

    Sara,
Perhaps I am expecting too much from Adobe ExportPDF. The reason I subscribed to this service, for which I pay a yearly fee, was that I need a way to  convert scanned and digital documents to Word &/or Excel. I read the link you included but to be candid the more I tried to understand what was written the more confused I got. The process should not be this difficult. Currently I am using a NEAT scanner to create PDF documents of whatever I scan. After I changed the OCR setting on Adobe ExportPDF the output was much better but not to the point it was usable as it was. Information that appears to be lines and columns are sometimes not recognizing two columns and just putting them together in one. Obviously not usable. The other thing it does is bunch numbers that appear in a column that are just a bunch of numbers that I have no way of fixing.
Please let me speak to someone who can help me. Right now I not getting anything of value in my paid subscription.
