Better to transcode in Final Cut or Compressor?

Hi All! I'm transcoding to a 30,000 KB sec H.264 for a film festival screening. They sent specs that match the Quicktime conversion dialogue box out of Final Cut. I usually use compressor to make H.264s, assuming that it was better quality and/or faster than FC. IS that the case? Or is it just as good to convert out of Final Cut? Asside from being slightly easier because I've got Final Cut specs, using FC would also save me the extra step of exporting a QT and then sending the QT to compressor.
Thanks!

What Rat Vega siad…you want your film to be dispayed at its best. So saving a few minutes here and there is less important than achieving the best quality.
Use Compressor. Take some short, representative sections from your film and test different setttings in Compressor to see which produces the best results.
Good luck at the festival.

Take a look at this section; it's pretty clear.
Compressor offers settings for each of the output formats you want. (For example, the m4v sttings for Apple Devices.)

  • Gaining better resolution from my final cut hd express films

Hey, can anyone help my on going conundrum once and for all. I've asked editors, all be it avid based, apple technicians and i've still yet to have a definite answer. I've been editing on my macbook using imovie 08 HD, which has been fairly adequate. However, I also have a g5 powermac with th final cut express HD software. I'm not too fussed about livetype and other beneficial FX that final cut express can offer, but what i do want is a better resolution for the finished product, as the final result tends to be a bit blocky. I used to work in TV as director and so have sat in on many an edits. I guess what i'm after is the amateur version of onlining, if this exists??? with AVID suites, in simple, this basically involves re-entering all the rushes, but i've got a funy feeling that it's not that simple sat at home, as the kit in an online suite, would set me back a couple of 100K!
I guess in short what i'm asking asking is A) will i gain a better resolution from using final cut HD express and B) how do you gain the highest possible resolution on either pieces of software. My camera is the Sony Z1 and i'm currently using iDVD.
If anyone can help I'd be hugely grateful!!

thanks for the hospitality! i only wish i'd used the forum earlier...it's nice to there are still decent people out there, willing to share their knowledge..!
my macbook is the 2GHz core duo, but not sure about the G5, it's circa 2004 (i know that's no real help!)
the 'blockyness' in imovie has been there from day 1 and always appears after i have burned the movie off in idvd or merely exported it to an mpeg4 file or likewise and on sequences where i have applied an effect, especially raised the exposure levels the 'blockyness; is almost lego like! but as a general rule of thumb, when editing the rushes look great. once they've been exported its as if they have become 2nd/3rd generation. I've imported stuff to final cut express 2 (recently got the upgrade software to HD express) the rushes look fine, but i'm presuming once i export the same will apply. The quicktime software i'm using is the 7.4.5 version, can this have an effect on the quality? and whether or not the movie is viewed back on the mac or through an external video monitor, the same quality is apparent. I am capturing straight from the camera, but not sure if im using cinemode, this isn't a feature i'm aware of in the menu of the Z1.
I'm no steve jobs, but I'm pretty sure the problem lies around the exporting stage of my movie making. for example, when with imovie, when i produce a title. the edges of the lettering are perfect. once it's been exported, the edges of all the letters are very soft. I've had a look at some other discussion group pages to see if anyone shares the same problem. somebody proposed changing the expert settings in imovie8 which i did but to no avail.
I have toast software that i have not yet used, would this make any difference?
Many thanks again for your guidance.

  • Can I use Final Cut During Compressor Export?

    Hi,
This is my first time using compressor and I'v read that you can use Final Cut while Compressor exports. When I start to export from Compressor, I get a message on Final Cut that says Frame X (what ever frame the export is on) and I can't use Final Cut when Compressor is exporting. I have rendered everything in Final Cut's timeline. Can I use Final Cut while compressor exports?
    Thanks,
    Zevie

    Zevie,
You would not lose any quality. You will speed things up considerably.
To set up compressor to use all your free cpu, you need to enable sharing with qmaster. On your system preferences, there should be a qmaster item.
There are lots of posts about how to set it up. Do a search on it. I think even apple has instructions on how to do it. You can read the compressor manual as well.
It is called distributed processing, and you will want to set up a quick cluster.
Here is an article about it. The only thing that I know is different is on Snow Leopard, you may have to select "Managed" in the services box for compressor. This will allow you to select the number of instances.

  • Does GPU speed transcoding by Final Cut Studio?

Does GPU ( NVIDIA QUADRO 4000 for Mac ) speeds transcoding  by Final Cut Studio?

Motion can make some use of the GPU as can a few FCP effects. However only ATI cards were supported, not nVidia and the acceleration was only on playback, not rendering.
The Quadro 4000 will be a benefit if you are running Adobe CS5.5 apps (Premiere, AE, Photoshop). It will not aid FCS.
I just wish it had support for 3 monitors.

  • G5 Power PC vs Imac...which is better for editing with final cut studio 2?

    This is my present computer:
    iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (2008 model)
4 gigs of 800 mhz ddr2 sdram (this is the max ram for this computer! )
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB
Hard drive: 465 gig (I use mainly external drives for editing)
I use this mainly for video editing with final cut studio 2.
    Rendering in compressor takes forever!!!
A friend suggested I pick up a used G5 Power PC.
I found this one, here are the specs:
APPLE POWER MAC G5 PowerPC DUAL CORE (2 x 2 GHZ)
    System Mac OSX 10.5.8
    RAM 12 GB
1 Hard drive of 160 Gb
    Superdrive 16x CD/DVD/DL DVD (32x)
Video card NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (VRAM 256 Mb)
    3 open PCI-Express expansion slots.
    1x FireWire 800
    3x FireWire 400
    4x USB 1 and 2
    2x Ethernet Port
    2x Displays ports
Is this insanity or a smart move to move over to the older G5.
According to my friend, the older G5s are much better at processing video.
Is a dual 2 GHZ processor enough or would I need a 2.3 or 2.5?
OR is there another option that someone might be able to suggest?
I would be so appreciative of any opinions regarding this issue.
    Thanks in advance.
    Bill

Save your pennies and look for a refurbished or used MacPro. Early 2008 or newer 8 core machines w/8GB of RAM running 4 instances in QMaster will chew through material.
Beyond running compressor, it is just a better all round machine for editing video.
    • it has multiple internal drive bays which run via SATA connections - much faster than the FW800 limits of the iMac for external drives
    • it has 3 slots which give you the option of an i/o card from AJA, Blackmagic or Matrox so that you can actually monitor your video properly as well as ingest high end formats
    • the slots give you the ability to connect esata raids for even higher data speeds
    • you have much greater flexibility with computer monitors
    • you have much greater RAM capacity
    and so on ...

  • Final Cut 5 & Compressor

Does compressor 2 come with a Final Cut 5 upgrade? After I upgraded from 4.5 to 5, compressor all of sudden stopped working.
    does anyone have any ideas?
    thanks.
    --sbf

    thanks 4 responding. . .
When I started to install FCP5 update, the Compressor checkbox was greyed out and "skipped" was in the status field.
I didn't think much about it until I tried to export out of FCP. Everytime I "export using compressor," the compressor registration tab comes up -- indicating that I haven't registered compressor. After I submit the registration, Compressor 1 launches-- then just sits there. . . The sequence does not come over from FCP.
How can I get Compressor 2 into my system? FCP5 obviously doesn't like Compressor 1.
thanks for any help you can offer.

  • DNxHD footage transcode in Final Cut Server?

I'm looking at setting up a directory watcher which will automatically transcode footage from HDV to Avid DNxHD.
Is this possible at all within Final Cut Server? It seems Final Cut support all of the codecs I have installed except that one.

The codec doesn't show up as a valid codec in the list when I try to make the custom transcode setting.
    I'm doing the following:
SysPrefs -> Final Cut Server -> Automations -> "plus" -> File System Watcher -> Set up the watcher filter -> Responses -> "plus" -> Copy Response -> Transcode source to -> NO AVID CODEC in list.
Am I in the right place to be setting this up, or is there somewhere else I can make sure the codec appears?
We have set the threadsafe bit to see if that made a difference but there is still nothing from Avid in the list.
It shows up just fine in the other apps on the mac, is it an incompatibility with FCS and that codec?
    Your help is greatly appreciated,
    Chris.

  • HELP HELP with Final Cut and Compressor

    Hello
Hope there is somebody out there which can help figuring that problem out without telling me reinstall because I did that and it did not work. Here is the problem. I want to export my timeline to compressor and compress to DVD90 quality but nothing really happens. I am getting an annoying screen asking if I allow Batch Monitor share (deny or allow) regardless what I do it always comes up. But compressor does not do anything . Final cut does create a separate Tab with a long number but that disappears. Anyway I have discovered when I am sending it to compressor at work and I am connected to the Network there, I am still getting the annoying questions but compressor starts compressing. (that was also before the 6.0.3 update) I had 6.0.2, but here at home I do not have a network. I created a different Network place for home but that did not help.
Has anybody an Idea how to fix, Apple seems to ignore it, I never had the problem with that in FCP5

    thanks for the answers
i actually did that and it did work and was actually faster then using compressor the way i did.
I still got the deny and allow screen but it started to compress it, I had to restart first though the first time the same thing happened nothing at all but after the restart it started to compress.

  • Final Cut Pro, Compressor,  and strobed video...

Recently I have started doing projects on Final Cut Studio 2. I have been taking footage of a local pro wrestling outfit, taking my ringside roaming cam and taking the school's hard cam and doing a 2 camera output with Multiclip. I have a Mac G5 1.6 GHz Tower, and am using a Sony SR-47 Hard Drive Camera for my roaming cam shots. I have noticed that the footage on the playback on the camera, as well as when I import it into FCP is fine. But when I output the footage through compressor, the fast action footage (which there is quite a bit of) seems to be very strobed. When the action slows down it's fine, but when it picks back up, there it is again.
I asked my Apple Store teacher about this, his suggestion was to mark where ALL of the actions shots are in FCP and mark them to be "less compressed". That will take way too long, and there is no guarantee that will work. So I come to everybody here, is there a way that I can stop this from happening? I don't think the length of the entire show has much to do with it, since it was only 90 mins or so, which I know can easily fit onto a 4.7 GB DVD. (My teacher said try using dual layer DVD's...have had nothing but problems using dual layer DVD's for anything else but data.)
The footage on the cam is MPEG 2, and I have been exporting it via Streamclip to make a .dv file, which is then imported into FCP. The footage is then edited, and exported through compressor to DVD.
So, any help? Thanks in advance!
    Tom

I spoke to a FCP rep at Apple yesterday, what he said was that FCP is by default set on lower field dominance, and that my Sony cam is set on upper field dominance, which would cause those strobed video problems. Also, he said try de-interlacing the video, that could also be a problem. Well my next project is in 2 weeks so I will try that and see how it goes...

  • Export to Apple TV straight from Final Cut (QTP/Compressor)

In preperation for my Apple TV, I needed to know how I can "export to apple TV" from Final Cut Pro. I can import my 1080i HDV footage (from a Sony HC7) into iMovie, go to share, Quicktime, Expert Setting and simply click "Export to Apple TV" (which is obviously built into Quicktime now. But when I have the same footage in FCP and go to "Export"...I can't find "to Apple Tv" ANYWHERE! Not in "quicktime movie", "quicktime conversion" or "using compressor". Am I missing something? We can we not export to Apple TV with in FCP?
I've posted this in the Quicktime, FCP & Compressor boards incase it's another issue.
    Thanks!

    yes....absoultely.
here is my response from my same QT thread:
i know. i have that (QT 7.1.5)...and QTP. in my original post...i said i can do this in iMovie very easily (i explained the process)...but when i try to export from FCP..."export to Apple TV" is not an option.
if you have FCP...you might want to try. i know in theory you think you would...but unless you have FCP...you won't know. can someone post a confirmation that has FCP so people on here don't think i'm loony.
and if you have FCP and can do this...please explain how.
    thanks!

  • Final Cut to Compressor to DVD Studio issues

I am editing HD footage into a project....when I export to Compressor, FC shuts down 9 out of 10 times. When the file does make it thru, and I push to DVD Studio, I get text that is half out of the field of view (although it looks fine in the FC timeline) and in areas where I have multiple clips flying in (motn file) the video is replaced with a red and white checkboard pattern (again, in the FC timeline, it looks perfect)
    Thoughts?

I'm not sure what would cause the text to be out of frame other than some mis-match on aspect ratio settings. Just don't know there.
I've had a lot of problems with .motn files in FCP and elsewhere since FCP6. Have you tried exporting the motion files as QT movies then bringing them into FCP? I've had to do that a lot lately due to some rendering issue with FCP6 and Motion.

  • Final cut and compressor don't work! Please help!!

Hi, I am having serious problems with my mac and it is not the first ime this has happened when I work to a deadline. Surely this is not some cruel twist of fate, rather mismanagement on my part? But how, why?
I am running FCP 5.1.4 and Compressor 2. FCP will not load at all at the moment and I have tried using Onyx to clean up the system, FCP Rescue to delete preferences. I have freed up additional space on my start up drive, which was admittedly low before I did so. I have accidentally erased some scratch files, but have managed to get so far on start up as to reset them. I really do not know what to do here and am desperate to get to work. I can not get beyond the serial registration window, and Activity Monitor comes up FCP not responding, every time after about 30 seconds.
As for Compressor, well it seems to quit whenever it feels like it, and the batch monitor function crashes immediately up launch.
I am really deperate here for input, and have experienced these sorts of problems in the past when running decompressing to HD quality in FCP, simultaneously running Compressor and or DVD Studio Pro.
My machine should be powerful enough though with 4 x dual 2.5 processors and gigs of ram, or so I thought...
Thoughts very welcome. Thanks in advance!

also try running the FCS apps installer (no additional content), sometimes this fixes the problem, it doesn't take too long and is similar to a refresh of the apps, especially if you are having problems starting apps, or serializing them and you have a valid serial! After you install, don't start the apps, run disk utility, repair permissions, reboot and then start up FCP and serialize.

  • Final Cut Pro Compressor: Pro Res to H.264

Hi, I'm a business / startup guy ramping up a knowledge base of all things digital video. We'll be receiving a good number of Pro Res files, all of which we'll need to compress to H.264. My question is about time. I'm looking at the Mac Pro four core. Here are my thoughts:
    1. How long should it take to compress a two hour film from Pro Res to H.264 (high)
    2. If we were to run four instances of Compressor, one for each core, would there be an increase in compression time
    That's all, thanks in advance

The first question is one with too many variables for a single answer. Here is an article that discusses H.264 compression speeds on a MP compared to an iMac and which takes into account some of those variables.
To the second question, again, it all depends. Here is an article by the same author on that subject as well as an Apple support doc. that should be helpful.
