Better to upgrade or start clean?

Any thoughts on whether it's better, when upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5, to wipe the boot HD clean and install a fresh copy of 10.5, or just upgrade directly (after backing up and running Disk Utility/DiskWarrior)? I know that it'd be faster to just do the latter, but are there any advantages to doing it the other way?
Thanks in advance.

If you are having trouble with your system now, it won't be solved by upgrading. And unless you are certain the issue is with software, an erase won't help you. So let's troubleshoot the reasons you desire to erase first.

    Hey Grimeymouse,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iPod classic is only playing sound in mono when using multiple headphones.
Since you've likely isolated this behavior to the iPod by trying multiple headphones, see this advice from the "The headphones don't work" section of the iPod troubleshooting basics and service FAQ:
If the issue appears to be with the iPod, try resetting it. If that doesn't work, then restore iPod with the latest iPod software using iTunes 7 or later.
    All the best,

OK...then reload that one...the key is reloading the OS, whatever version it is. As for the version info, what is offered to you is controlled by others (normally your carrier)...you won't receive an offer via the official methods for anything newer until they approve it. The most common thing to do after an update that results in issues is to perform an OS reload. Sometimes, the update processes have errors and such...with a reload often curing the issues. The official methods, which will be controlled as to what exact OS versions you are offered:http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-10-Functions-and/How-to-Reload-your-Blackberry10-O...The unofficial methods, which are cleaner, and allow you to choose an OS version that perhaps your carrier (or whoever it is controlling your offers) has been slow to approve:http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-10-OS-Device-Software/Upgrading-OS10-devices-using...http://forums.crackberry.com/bb10-leaked-beta-os-f395/bb10-os-archive-943672/Of course, before you start any of this you will want a good backup via LINK, a manual copy of your Device Memory to your PC, and full documentation of your configuration (account credentials, added apps, configurations, etc.). Sometimes, restoring from a backup returns to the device the very corruption one needs to eliminate, and reconfiguring from scratch can resolve that. Good luck!

  • Windows 7 upgrade: discs will include the option for a 32 to 64-bit upgrade via a clean install?

I would like to know whether the Lenovo Windows 7 upgrade discs will include the option for a 32 to 64-bit upgrade via a clean install?  I called Mentor today and was told the answer is no, but I was hoping someone here could tell me differently.
If "no" is truly the answer, I would like to voice my complaint: The upgrade discs from Microsoft (i.e. the retail upgrade discs) include both the 32 and 64-bit versions, so I don't completely understand why Lenovo's upgrade program doesn't offer the same thing.  I purchased my T500 in August, and back then Vista Ultimate 64 was not offered, so I chose Vista Ultimate 32 thinking that I could later upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate 64.  This assumption was based off of the info. on Microsoft's website indicating that all upgrades would contain the 32 and 64-bit versions.  I even customized my computer with 4 gigs of RAM thinking that I could take advantage of the extra gig once I installed Windows 7 64.
I don't understand what Lenovo or Mentor Media have to gain by restricting a 32 to 64-bit install.  I voiced this opinion to Mentor Media over the phone, who responded by saying that I should be happy since I am receiving a "free" upgrade.  I don't think this is an accurate assessment for two reasons: (1) I had to pay $17.03 for shipping, and I still haven't received the upgrade and (2) The total cost of my computer was almost $3,000, and the purchase was made a mere few weeks before Windows 7 was released.  $3,000 is a lot of money.  I waited for the details of the Windows 7 Upgrade Program to be announced BEFORE purchasing my machine.  When I finally bought my computer I accounted Windows 7 into the price I was paying.  In addition, when I bought this computer I did so expecting good customer service as a given.  Not providing a 64-bit upgrade without a rational explanation as to why does not qualify as appropriate customer service.
As most of you know, 4 gigs of RAM is useless with a 32-bit OS.  Also, NOW Lenovo is building new T500s with the option of having Windows 7 Ultimate 64 (why wasn't Vista Ultimate 64 offered when I bought my computer???).  And the price for choosing Windows 7 Ultimate 32 is EQUAL to the price for choosing Windows 7 Ultimate 64, which proves that there is no cost difference.  I just want to know what Lenovo has to gain by denying customers a 64-bit upgrade?  There would really be no additional cost since as I mentioned before, Microsoft's retail upgrade includes the 32 and 64-bit OS on one disc.  If anything I would think that it's costing Lenovo money to strip the 64-bit install from the upgrade discs.
Can anyone please address my problems?  Do you think there is anyone at Lenovo I could contact to voice my opinions?  I have been a loyal Thinkpad customer for over 5 years now, and I expect better from Lenovo.  Thank you for reading!

Is there any way to request a 64-bit OEM?  Why should Lenovo care whether I want a 32-bit or 64-bit as long as it's the same edition (Ultimate edition)?
if your system shipped with a 32-bit version of vista then you will be sent 32-bit windows 7 upgrade media.   the reason for this is two-fold.
first, because this is upgrade media, it's impossible to install a 64-bit version of windows over a 32-bit version.   doing so would require a clean installation and upgrade media simply won't allow this.   this is the case with retail media, too.   if you had 32-bit vista installed and wanted to upgrade it to 64-bit using retail media, you'd have to wipe your system or set up a dual-boot.
second, the COA (certificate of authenticity) on the bottom of your system is for vista.   because of this, your new license is of an upgrade from vista to 7.   this is how microsoft licenses it and it is their policy, not lenovo's.   microsoft's policy with OEMs is that you must install vista first, then upgrade to 7 (unless, of course, you purchased your system native with 7 on or after the 22nd).   since your original lenovo preload is of a 32-bit OS, the issue becomes circular and you'll have to refer again to the first reason.
i understand your frustration and wish this stuff were made easier for everyone.   it's repetative reading post after post of people with 4GB installed who don't understand the limitations of a 32-bit environment.   i wish both manufacturers and users switched to 64-bit OSes sooner.   the same thing happened when the industry went from 16-bit windows 3.11 to 32-bit windows NT4/95 and limitations went from 16KB all the way up to 4GB (which, in 1995, no one thought we'd ever exceed).   the difference is that people were complaining on BBSes over 14.4k modems instead of on GUI-based forums using broadband connections.   times sure have changed.

Is your iPhone not showing up in iTunes sidebar, or is iTunes not just launching automatically?
The things that you can check are:
    1) Launch iTunes manually
    2) Restart or reset your iPhone (http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3281)
    3) Check your cable including disconnecting and reconnecting it on bot the phone end and the computer USB end.
    4) Reboot your computer
    5) As a last resort, take it to the Apple Store so they can check the hardware

I mistakenly deleted all browsers from my laptop in an attempt to start clean with the newest version of Firefox. I still have Firefox on my desktop. How can I copy it to my laptop?

Re-installing the Firefox browser is fairly easy. For most users the important part is the information held in the [[profiles|profile]] including bookmarks and passwords.
If you remove personal settings it is almost impossible to get them back. You can however [[what is firefox sync?|sync]] between computers, and that effectively clones your bookmarks etc.
If you have not already removed setting do not do so now, some of that info may be recoverable.

  • Upgrading from Starter 7 to Home Premium

Just looking for thoughts about this. Is it worth it? Any slowdown as a result?

I think the major limitation, depending on what you're using the computer for, is there's a limit to the number of applications you can have open simultaneously. It's 4 or 6? I'm not sure since I've never run into the limit.
I'm a bit surprised by what you've said.  I know that Microsoft originally had intended there to be a 3-app limit to the number of programs that could be open simultaneously in Starter, but they eliminated that limit.  I'm not aware of their replacing that limit with another one.  I'm pretty sure that I have had four or five programs open at the same time with no problem; I don't recall whether I've had six or more.  I tend not to open huge numbers of programs at once on the netbook, simply because I bought it for certain fairly limited uses (email, web browsing, etc.), not for the full-scale use (web creation, photo editing, etc.) that I do on the desktop.  At any rate, I've never run into a limit.
Like you, sevenless, I had originally thought that I'd upgrade from Starter to something else, but I am finding that Starter meets my needs quite well, and I can't think of anything I want to do that Home Premium would make possible that Starter does not.  When I finally buy a new desktop, I will very likely choose something like Win7 Professional and the ability to run XP compatibility mode, but that requires a lot more than the 2 GB RAM possible on the netbook.

  • Audio background for menus and submenus does not start cleanly

I have a main menu with several submenus. I am not using any menu transitions or anything fancy here for this particular experiment/issue, I just want the audio behind the menus to start cleanly.
So far, it works perfectly in simulator or Apple's DVD Player, or Windows Media Player.
But in a set top box, it often chops off the beginning of the audio - it goes to the submenu, but then I miss the first beat of audio or something. It's not always consistent.
At this point, I have padded the beginning of each piece of BG audio with a full 2 seconds of silence, and it still doesn't start cleanly half the time. It's almost like the padding has no effect, although I can see that the clips I've assigned are 2 seconds longer. I've run out of ideas....thanks...

It's difficult for me to tell what it's doing with store-bought DVDs. In fact, this may be a common issue, because the few I tried all seemed to fade-in the audio clips.
So I tried that with mine, I put a little bit of a low bass note fade-in at the head of each audio clip - and it works! I don't know why.... it's like there's some audio threshold that has to be exceeded for the DVD player to actually start playing the audio.
Previously, my clips (which have drum beats) started right on the downbeat with a full groove. The first beat or so would get cut off. Now, with a little bit of a fade-in right before the downbeat, they play. I don't understand it, but it works....

  • Is a clean install with target mode better than upgrade?

Hi, is it better to do a clean install of Leopard and then transfer my files through an external fw drive or do just doing a plain upgrade? I ask because I know how much smoother and snappier a system is with a clean install but I do need to transfer all my files somehow. Thanks

I haven't gone to Leopard yet (my copy is allegedly due here sometime today or tomorrow) but I did an upgrade install on my home Macs for every new version of the OS since, well, forever. In the past there have been times when there was a problem, but few of them, and all cured by an archive install. I have never done an erase install.
    YMMV.

  • Upgrading Hard Drive - Wanting to start clean - No Windows CD [Thinkpad T60]

    Hello,
I would like the buy a larger hard drive for my laptop. I understand that I will need to go through the windows reinstall, but I dont have a windows cd. I do have the license # on the bottom of the machine. Can I just download the software?
Also, where do I get driver info and the IBM software? Can I just d/l system update and let that do all the work?
    Thanks.

Use the ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery utility that came installed on your ThinkPad to burn a set of recovery CD/DVDs. You can then use these to create a clean install on your new hard disk. If you've deleted R&R from your system you can purchase a set of recovery media from Lenovo.
As for System Update, Lenovo killed it on April 1st. And no, that's not an April Fool's Day joke
So for the time being you'll have to go to the Support page fot T60 on Lenovo's website, locate the Driver Matrix and manually determine what needs updating then manually download and install it. And yes, that is a cruel joke.
    Cheers... Dorian Hausman

  • Better option, Upgrade or fresh implementation?

    Hi,
I have a prospective client that is using BW 3.1. My team wants to know if we would be better of with an upgrade or fresh implementation to BI 7.0.
I wanted to know if they are any steps or pointers that will allow me to make this decision.
Are there any specific things that I should ask the client?
Would it depend on the hardware available?
    Any comments will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Sam

    Sam,
The client is always initerested in reducing the TCO (total cost of owenership). And the value addition happens only when one can reduce the TCO. Now if you gor for fresh implemenattaion you will have to maintain theexisting till the new one gets stabilised. Whereas if you upgrade, you will have the existing functionality till you migrate the objects  to the new version.
Also, depending upon the business requirement, you can migrate most of the critical objects after migration and start building new requiements i new version instead of starting from scratch. Plenty of documenst are available in Wiki. Please search for relevant ones and take advantage of upgrading instead of going for fresh implementation.

  • How to purge Workflow queue after R12 upgrade before starting WF Mailer?

    Hi,
We are about to upgrade to R12.1.3 from R11.5.9.
As part of the testing, I configured and started the Workflow Mailer in the new system. As soon as I did that, the system started sending a ton of notifications regarding past Requisition approvals apparently queued in the system. WF Mailer has been down since I did the last upgrade test.
We plan to approve all requisitions before the cutover in the old system, so there should be no email notifications pending. Is there a way of updating msg_state of those notifications in the wf_notification_out table with a value of "READY", so we can make sure that we will have a clean system and users will not receive any notifications regarding the past requisition approvals?
