Better voices?

DOes anyone know of any sources for [free] better quality voices for the built in text-to-speech function in OS9..? (might also be applicable to OSX). Fred and Victoria and the others (even high quality) are just not that great. Thanks.

Heh heh. Okay, i'll just mark this as "answered" because it's obvious there is no answer. Apparently i have to use MS Windows to do this. There are high quality voices all over the internet for download for XP, and they are free (in a sense).

VoiceOver - Better Voice?

Is there any way to buy and load a better VoiceOver voice? The one on the iPad is pretty bad I have had better ones on my computers for over 10 years now. I would really appreciate having a decent voice and am more then willing to pay for it. Taking a 10 year step back in technology is painful even for something as nice as an iPad.

The only way to buy and load anything for the iPad is from the app store. If you have searched there and not found anything suitable, then I don't think there is any way to add it. You can tell Apple you want this here:

Any better voices for Voice Over?

Does anyone know if there are any other voices for the Voice Over utility? Does Apple offer any? How about free ones?

Apple offers no other voices at the moment, though there are some queued up for Leopard when it comes out in the spring.
I haven't found any free voices either, though there are some Unix ones that would need to be compiled and installed—not a process for the faint-hearted.
Voices from Cepstral are available in a number of languages, and are comparable in quality to the Apple voices. They cost $29.99 apiece, and integrate quite well with VoiceOver, although there are occasional stability problems.
Other voices are available from Acapela as part of their Infovox iVox package. They work best when integrated with the VisioVoice package from AssistiveWare. This costs $249, but there is a special deal at $185 until 31st December 2006. The voices alone are available through AssistiveWare at $199 for US English, with again a special offer price until 31st December of $149. This gives you 5 high-quality (HQ) voices, which are a great deal better than any of the Apple or Cepstral offerings, and 2 high-definition (HD) voices, that sound less lifelike but can cope with special characters, and distinguish between upper- and lower-case letters.
In particular, the British English voices (slightly more expensive, but can be added separately) are superb quality—the best text-to-speech on any platform anywhere. I can also confirm the quality of the French voices, but am not qualified to judge the others!

Iphone 5S ios 7 voice memo

Is anyone experiencing the same issue as me ?
After recording a voice memo on the new ios 7,
I name the recording and then try my best to edit it.
I record in Logic Pro so I am very familiar with cutting audio files but this is ridiculous :-)
When I try to trim the beginning of the voice memo from the left red marker , the right red marker moves also in the opposite direction making it impossible to edit properly. I've looked for tutorials, I've researched this on the web but have found nothings at all, I assume because it is so brand new.
Wondering if anyone else is suffering from this.
It also gets worse the longer the voice memo, I recorded an acoustic set I did recently and wanted to edit out some background noise before I started playing and I just can't do it captain .

I am feeling your pain right now, this editor is an utter catastrophe!!! I have just tried for 20 mins to edit out 5 mins of an hour long clip and it was nigh on impossible. I gave up, imported it into Logic and spliced it up that way. The old voice memo was perfect, don't know what Apple is thinking by changing it to this fumbly interface. I'm actually in mourning over the loss of all the once perfectly usable and great (and now pretty much UNusable and awful) apps in the new iOS7. Voice memos I use daily and rely on them heavily for music....
Back to the drawing board...maybe Samsung does a better voice recorder now? Anyway rant over. I know it didn't help you to figure out the problem - but at least maybe you don't feel like the only one with this issue!

Is there a way to hear the voice to the speakers with a microphone plugged in the combo jack?

I have do frequent web conferencing with couple of people with me and one person on the other side. Each one of us takes turn to speak but we ALL need to hear what the other person on the other side is saying.
For better voice quality, it is best that the speaker at our end use a microphone but we all hear the voices of the remote person through the loud speakers or any external speaker
however, given that there is a combo jack in ThinkPad, as soon as I plug a microphone in, we are not able to hear the sound of the remote person through the laptop loudspeakers.
Is there any configuration or any software that could make this possible?

It's more of a hardware question than a Mac/PC/Audition question. Specialist sound interfaces (usually USB devices these days) have a feature called direct monitoring which lets you do exactly this. It's incredibly useful for all sorts of multitrack applications (including yours)--in fact, I'd call it essential for any serious audio work.
However, very few of the basic built in interfaces now included with computers allow this--they're more for playing games or watching films than serious recording.
I can't answer for the Mac specifically (still a PC person) but an external interface will solve your problem and improve your recording quality at the same time.

SBA Communications, the mobile-phone tower operator for both AT&T and Verizon Wireless, agreed to buy Optasite Holding Co. in a cash and stock deal to add installations in 31 U.S. states. (Note: Did not include the entire article due to the financial nature of the article.)
While it may appear that AT&T or Verizon is better to some than others, it would appear that their towers are this same towers possibly being run by a single 'outsource agreement' with SBA Communications.
This may reduce the AT&T is better or Verizon is better chatter which dominates this forum. It all appears to be the same tower!

Competing cell phone companies often share common tower sites so they all can save some money. You can see 3-4 sets of antennas on towers sometimes. Those are different cell phone providers.
Verizon Wireless and AT&T use different incompatible technical standards for their radio networks. I am over-simplifying, but Verizon Wireless and Sprint use technology based on the cdma2000 family of 3G standards developed by the organization 3GPP2 (see 3GPP2.org). AT&T, T-Mobile use the GSM/UMTS/HSPA family of standards developed by 3GPP (see 3GPP.org).
Which network is better? It varies by technology and implementation (how the technology is deployed). Standards evolve and improve also. Today, in the US, I think cdma2000 is better for heavy voice users (fewer dropped calls, better voice quality, etc.). For data, I think cdma2000 and GSM/UMTS/HSPA are comparable, with GSM/UMTS/HSPA pulling ahead in the longer term (and catching up with voice), expecially with the deployment of the longer-term technology now under planning by 3GPP, called Long Term Evolution (LTE).
I am getting an iPhone but only because I do not use a cell phone much for voice. If I did, I would keep my Verizon Wireless phone instead of getting an iPhone.

Can't download enhanced quality voice for Siri

I am trying to download the enhanced quality for Siri, and I can't. First, I'm having wifi problems. I can't turn it on, it's greyed out. I believe that is why I can't download it. Is there a workaround without needing wifi? I hate this little robotic voice she has.

It doesn't nesscarily need to be downloaded. I've seen other iPhone 4s' with the better voice. That's why it brought it to my attention.
I don't know if I mentioned, but I can't solve my wifi problem. That's why I asked was there a workaround.

If you are connected to WiFi, no data will be transmitted over the 3G antenna. Leaving it on will consume a very small amount of additional power relative to turning it off (where it will default to the EDGE network). But, it's minimal additional drain. If you do get a call, 3G can be better (voice and data are carried on the same network), since 3G performs better at low signal strength because it uses signals from multiple towers simultaneously.
Personally, I leave 3G on all the time, and have no issues with battery life (I do recharge nightly).

MuVo Voice Recording Qual

I've been a happy MuVo NX user for over a year, EXCEPT for its voice recording. I use it to record parts I'm supposed to sing with a chorus. When more than a few people are singing, the result is lots of loud static. I don't need a high-quality recording, but I would like to be able to avoid the static. Do any of the more recent MuVo units have a better voice recorder? Thanks.

I've bought a Muvo TX FM 52 and I'm having the same problem. The buzz/noise is too high. My friend has a different one (also TX FM 52) and the recordings have some noise too but it is acceptable. I'm so disappointed with this function of this player. I installed the new firmware but it didn't help at all. I intend to return it if I cannot resolve the problem.

What happened to Siri's voice? Why is it so robotic? Please help!

Hello there!
I recently purchased an iPhone 5s and I am noticing that while using Siri, her voice sounds very robotic and not like the Siri voice I left behind on my old 4s.
I purposely did not backup my iPhone 4s when I purhcased the 5s because my phone was buggy and the Apple reps said to do everything from scratch when I got my new phone. (They didn't want the old crap to transfer to the new so I started fresh).
I read on some blogs that if people turn off / back on Siri, she 'finds' her new / better voice, but I've had no such luck. Some people also said to turn off the 'enhanced' slider and turn it back on, which I've done as well.
I've given it 3 days -- thinking maybe she'd get a secret update or something. But sadly, she still sounds like a robot. I mean, she is a robot -- but she sounds WAYYYY more robotic now and not like the more natural sounding female I had on the 4s.
How can I fix this? I use Siri ALOT and it's bugging the heck out of me!

New female and male voices will be available initially in U.S. English, French, and German. You can change the gender by going toSettings > General > Siri > Voice Gender. Your iOS device initially uses a compact voice for Siri. iOS will automatically download and install a more natural-sounding voice when you first connect to power and a Wi-Fi network.

In Playbook we can have a single character password, why not on BB10? "too short" well it is my decision, isn't it?
There is no way to go next/previous while reading an e-mail. Please add these functions.
Add to the e-mail client, Next Unread / Previous Unread.
E-mail or Hub should have more buttons at the bottom in landscape mode. Why keep only three (or four in e-mail view) buttons when you have the real estate. It would be extremely handy if you allowed users to edit which buttons should go at the bottom. Next Previous is really needed while reading an e-mail. For example I would love to add "File" button at the bottom as a shortcut instead of forward, I rarely forward, but I file all the time. Maybe allow users to have two row of keys, add next/previous/unread. Or it could be done with a gesture. How about swiping the account name (top blue bar while reading e-mail) left and right?
When you create a new contact in BlackBerry, it gets synced to all accounts on the Hub. There is no way to limit the new contact to a specific account.
Sometimes when you file an e-mail to a folder, it stops and waits few seconds with no message. Even when it files immediately, there is a confirmation message that takes time to appear and disappear, and the folder list does not disappear automatically.
Messages filed automatically by server using server side filter rules are still showing up on Blackberry hub/inbox. In older BB versions the filtered messages did not show up in the list, filed messages still did.
When you filter your e-mails using Filter / Unread function, new unread e-mails do not show up until you close the filter and re-open. It won't just keep refreshing your screen with unread e-mails. Can BB add a button to the hub "Unread Hub" so when hub shows 8 or 2, you can actually see unread items easily without having to through so many taps.
Native BB QR scanner (Smart Tags) does not work with barcodes (it only scans with no way to use the information). There is Open In function but it doesn't work properly.
We need to add more customs search providers, and be able to add custom search strings/wildcards. For example currently there is Google, Bing, Yahoo, Foursquare, etc..
I hope BB introduces the ability include more standard & custom searches, IMDB, PriceGrabber, Ebay, Youtube, XYZ Forums, ABC Newspaper, 123 Database, Etc.. Most sites nowadays provide search string in their URL Search=?* etc...
None of the Battery apps can access system settings to add a battery icon to the top. I wish battery percentage was there.
There is no way to check carrier/mobile signal strength.
Blackberry, please add the date and carrier / SSID info to the top. Sometimes we just want to glance at the top to see the date without having to swipe.
Please bring back keyboard shortcuts. Since we can easily swipe up to bring the keyboard, just add keyboard shortcuts in e-mail, phone (true speed dialing, dialing by word?), and browser, etc.. if possible. I could always call 1800SOMETHING# now I have to look up the number or use dial pad.. Please bring it back.
Camera zoom function needs to be fixed, also please include option of fixed focus by tapping on the screen to focus. The auto focus in video is focusing in and out to various objects all the time. Stabilization feature also causes tearing/ripples, I guess it is good if you are stationary. Or use Volume Keys to Zoom.
Please allow more than 12 icons in an icon group/folder, I hated Apple for limiting apps per folder, please fix it.
Auto ON/OFF feature is not there anymore. BB should consider Auto DND (DoNotDisturb) or Auto Silent/Airplane modes instead.
Please find a way to stop the music app from automatically starting up every time it connects to bluetooth like car audio. This is very annoying.
No Panaroma mode in Camera app, why not? It is very easy to incorporate. This could be a nice addition to next release, and easy.
The text selection grips needs to be a little bigger, sometimes I cannot see where I am moving them, they work better in Playbook, nice big tabs.
Call Functions, before answering a phone add sideways gesture functions, like swiping right will forward the call, swiping left will answer with a test message, etc..
Or there should be a way to reject the call without sending it to voice mail, phones had this function a decade ago, I don't know what happened to it.
We used to be able to see the "History" without having to save the contact. Now I don't see any way to "View History" of a certain phone number, it just keeps adding
them as individual entries to the log. Now I can't see when was the last time they called me, how many times we spoke which day, etc... I loved this feature in BB5.
Where is BB Traffic? Where is BB Weather, without having to run an active frame? It will eventually disappear if you run too many apps. I liked a little Icon that shows me what the temp is, instead of running a whole app.
There is no Skype. This day and age with all other platforms having it, please either get skype (Microsoft) to cooperate, or open up BBM to other platforms. If necessary, pay Skype to develop the app, then charge BB users for the app. Most will gladly pay.
Can we tap and hold on an active frame to pin it, or can we pin two favorite apps between Call and Search & Search and Camera buttons in the bottom bar? How about Close All running Active Frames app to quickly free up ram?
I hope next generation devices have two speakers or speaker that is facing forward. When playing games or watching videos in landscape mode, I find my palm muting the speaker. I have to hold it gently with fingers to have a gap in between, something I don't want to do when I am on the subway or bus.
Blackberry Maps should have a Zoom In/Zoom Out buttons, sometimes using it with one hand, it is impossible to zoom in and out. (Zoom in is OK but we can't zoom back out)

Trouble w/Linksys WRT54G2 connecting w/Linksys Phone Adapter SPA2102

I am trying to connect my new VOIP phone adapter Linksys SPA2102 with my wireless router Linksys Cisco #WRT54G2 V1. I have DSL and previously had the wireless router connected with a Vonage Phone Adapter and everything worked fine. When trying to connect my new phone adapter Linksys(SPA2102) it does not work. It will work if I connect the new adapter directly with my DSL modem but will not work through my wireless router (WRT54G2 v1). I have turned everything off and restarted all products several times along with the PC and still no luck. The only way I can get my DSL to work with the new adapter is to wire it directly to the DSL modem. Everything worked yesterday prior to trying to use the new phone adapter. I hope this makes sense lol. This is not allowing me to use my laptop through the wireless router. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

NO Customer Loyalty

Been a customer since 2003 and been eligible for an upgrade since 2011. We finally upgraded our phone for better voice quality service. $149.00 for a basic phone, but it's for business and that's what we need. We got lucky by surfing online and using a coupon to get a discount. There is a $30 upgrade fee which I think is silly to impose when you already agree to a contract. With AT&T they charge you the upgrade fee but then waive the fee as soon as it is purchased. I asked customer service if they would consider waiving the upgrade fee and I got a very short reply that they simply don't do it. It's not great when you don't feel good about your purchase or your phone carrier.
Why Verizon, why?

Verizon is a horrible company no matter how you look at. I plan on cancelling my entire Verizon account due to extremely poor customer service and ridiculous practices; see Extremely Dissatisfied Death in family.
Why put up with this company when there are so many to choose from.

A/V Syc Problems

Hey everybody.
I'm the videographer for one of my school plays, and I'm having editing problems. In order to get better voice recordings from the stage, I used a microphone seperate from that of the video camera. I have had no troubles syncing the audio and video in iMovie at the beginning, but when I shuttle to the other end of a the scene, the audio is roughly fifteen seconds out of sync. The scene itself is about 20 minutes long. I tried slowing down the video to compensate, but a one pixel difference damatically overcorrected the issue. Back to square one.
So then I tried importing the audio into Audacity to see if a could spped it up the tiny amount required. Unfortunately, Audacity seems to be having problems importing AIFC files. I'm unfamiliar with them, too.
I want to try converting the files inside Quicktime Pro, but I don't have it, and my parents won't buy it until someone else says it'll work.

This sounds like you've been using a Canon camcorder, and with the audio possibly set to 12bit (32kHz) instead of 16bit (48kHz).
Canon audio tends to slip out of sync in any single continuous clip over about 20 mins.
You should be able to adjust it with Audacity: try importing again, and just snip off half-a-second of audio here and there - say every fifty seconds or so ..just under every minute.
To edit it with Audacity, just 'Extract' the audio in iMovie. Then do the following:
1 - In iMovie, double-click the extracted audio clip to see what iMovie calls it: ignore the 'Name', but make a note of the 'Media file:' ..it'll probably be called "Extracted Audio 01.aiff". Save your movie and close iMovie.
2 - In the Finder, go to your 'Movies' folder (or wherever you've stored this particular movie) and Ctrl-click (or right-click) on the particular movie's name, and then choose 'Show Package Contents'.
3 - Then open the 'Media' folder, and drag the file "Extracted Audio 01.aiff" (..or whatever it was called..) onto your Desktop or into the 'Movies' folder ..anywhere as long as it's out of the Media folder within the 'Package' which comprises your movie (because Audacity won't be able to find it if it's hidden within the 'package' which comprises your movie).
4 - Open Audacity, and choose File and Open, and navigate to where you've stored that "Extracted Audio 01.aiff", and choose that. It should import into Audacity with no problem.
5 - Do your editing (see below) and then Save and close Audacity.
6 - With the Finder, open that 'Package' which is your movie - by ctrl-clicking or right-clicking on it again - and drop the edited "Extracted Audio 01.aiff" back into the 'Media' folder.
When you re-open iMovie, your edited "Extracted Audio 01.aiff" should play correctly.
When editing it in Audacity, try to snip out a bit of silence just before someone speaks: the very slight resultant lack of sync probably won't be noticeable in the video from where your camera was standing. Try to chop out teeny bits of silence, rather than cutting out actual sounds.
Congratulations on choosing to use an external mic instead of the camcorder mic, though!
