Better way to connect nylon camera strap?
I'm concerned about the connection to the slender metal slots on the side of my 7D. Is there a more sure method -- the 7D is heavy and I recently had a strap separate at the juncture.
I don't use the factory strap -- partially for this reason, but mostly because of comfort.
Check out either (or both) the Black Rapid straps and the Carry Speed straps. They make several models. I use a BlackRapid RS-7 strap.
These straps attach to the tripod mounting bolt socket on the bottom of the camera (or to the bolt socket on a lens mounting collar if you've got a heavy lens attached.) The mount bolt slides on the nylon strap and you wear the streap over the shoulder opposite where you rest the camera. This means the camera rests quite comfortably upside down when you're not using it. When you grab the camera to lift it to your eye for shooting, the bolt connector slides up the strap. It includes some limiters which allow you to restrict how far it can slide.
These things are MUCH more comfortable if you're going to be wearing a camera all day.
The traditional strap was designed in a time when a cameras didn't have long lenses. Today's camera lenses make the camera point downward and that puts a pinch on the strap connection as well as makes the camera not very comfortable to wear.
The Carry Speed brand strap has an optional attachment plate which also includes an Arca-Swiss style dovetail plate so the camera can still be mounted to a tripod head (as long as the head has the standard Arca-Swiss style 1" wide dovetail saddle.) without needing to remove the strape or plate (although disconnecting the strap is a simple operation and you can leave the dovetail plate attached.)

A Better Way to do Multi-Camera
I am able to do multi-camera edits, synchonization and playback but I suspect I am doing it inefficiently. All of the tutorials I've seen start with only the clips that will participate in the multi-cam ALONE in a sequence. And I know all the steps from there. But what I don't know is how to efficiently proceed if there are may clips in a sequence and I only want to do multi-cam on one stack of clips in the sequence. For instance, let's say that I have 10 clips on the timeline. All are on video and audio tracks 1. But the 6th clip also has multi-cam clips on video and audio tracks 2-4. What I currently do is
1. copy these clips (only the clips located in the 6th spot tracks 1-4 on the timeline but not the entire sequence)
2. paste them to a new sequence (sequence #2)
3. create another new sequence (sequence #3)
4. drag sequence #2 into sequence #3)
I know all the multi-cam steps after this.
The question is: is this the most efficient way to do this when I'm starting with a sequence that has clips on them other than the ones that I want to participate in multi-cam. I'm creating 2 new sequences to accomplish this. Can it be done in only one new sequence?I edit a lot of things the same way you are talking about when you have many clips on video 1 and then just a few where there are mulitple cameras.
If there are only 2 shots (Video 1 and Video 2) here is what I do.
1. Line up Video 2 over top of Video 1 in the proper place.
2. Right click on the clip in Video 2 and select "Unlink" (Unlinking will unlink the audio and video. You do this so that when you cut video 2 you do not also cut the audio)
3. Place the CTI so that it is on your Video 2 Clip and then double click on that clip. This will open the clip in your Source Monitor.
4. BEFORE moving the CTI, Right Click on the tab of your Program Monitor and select "Gang Source and Program".
5. Now turn off the eyeball on Video 2
6. When you scrub through the timeline you will see both your video in both the Program and Source monitors moving. Unfortuantely you cannot just play the video and watch both. You can play it and watch the Program monitor and when you stop the Source monitor will catch up.
7. Use the Cut tool to cut out spots of Video 2 so you can see Video 1.
8. One tip is that if you are going to cut the very first part of Video 2 the best thing to do is to get the CTI where you want Video 2 to start and then use your selection tool to just trim it to that spot. If you cut it and delete it you will loos your video in the source monitor. Not that big of a deal because all you have to do is Double Click on it again and re-select Gange Source and Program, but it saves you from having to mess with it.
If I have 3 or more video clips I just highlight them all and right click and select "Nest". That will make your new sequence for you with all your clips you selected. Just then do a normal Multi Cam edit.

What is best way to connect new camera to iMac.
I just got a new camera - canon PowerShot sx40 - I want to connect it to my iMac to down video. It does 1080 dpi. My computer was from feb 2010. It has 4 USB and one FireWire 800 port. No thunderbolt. What cables do I need.
The camera shoud have Firewire 400 cable (arrow looking port), all you need is a Firewire 400/800 (boxy looking port) adapter.
This will allow the camera to stream video to the computer and transfer at the fastest speed.
If you only have USB on the camera (may be USB mini port), then it's really for transfering, your Mac only has USB 2 ports, so find out which ones are the USB 2 (as some are USB 1 which is slower)
Newer devices may have USB 3, but it's backwards compatible with USB 2 and 1, just slower. -
Is there a way I can have a single link to all the shared folders on the PC in one Window?
I'm a new Mac user and trying to connect to my PC.
I tried a few different ways while I was muttling through the process and at one point I thought I had it. I think I was able to browse through all the shared folders on the PC from the Mac, but I couldn't see the Mac from the PC. Once I renamed the workgroup to match the PC, I could easily browse all the folder on the Mac from the PC, but now my access to the PC has changed.
When I connect to the PC, I'm given a choice of which shared folder I want to connect to, and an icon link for that single folder appears on the desktop.Hi Chip, all my PCs are switched to Linux at the moment, so I can't test it, but I think there's 2 ways... or more.
First, I think you could place Shortcuts to the Folders you wish to access on the PC, into one Folder on the PC.
On the Mac side you could make Aliases of those Icons once mounted, and put them in a Folder on the Mac, then you could even drag that folder to the Dock, between Applications and Trash, so you get a popup menu of the PC's Folders.
Though a security problem if the PC is connected to the Internet... I just Shared the whole C:\, D:\, E:\, etc. with my Macs -

I am having trouble transferring files from an old MacBook (2007) to a MacBook Air over a wireless network. The connection was interrupted and the time was over 24 hours. Is there a better way to do this? I'm using Migration assistant. The lack of an ethernet port on MacBook air does not help.

I am the Video Coordinator at Samford University and have found the quality of video capture on the iPad 4 AMAZING, however I need to convert all my files through a canopus in order to Capture and Cut live like I do with a regular video camera. I can get the tripod and mount for the iPad, I was just wondering if anybody knows exactly how/if there is a way to connect to the canopus from an iPad.
Look forward to hearing what you guys and girls say.I'm a bit vague about what it is you wish to accomplish. Are you trying to capture video through an external box? If so, that's not posssible with any of the Canopus boxes I'm familar with. In fact I don't know of any external video capture solution that works with an iPad, though I can't state definitively that none exist. I really don't think an iPad would be well suited for this even if it's possible. I'd strongly suggest you look into a MacBook Air or one of the current MacBook Pros. Those are far better suited for on-the-fly video capture and editing.
If that's not what you mean, please post back and explain further what it is you wish to accomplish.

Actually there have been reports of certain USB keyboards working through the USB adapters like the Apple Camera Connection Kit . But they are far from consistent. The best bet is to find a simple keyboard without any bells or whistles as you want one that consumes the least amount of power.
But yes there some that do work through there.

I film with two cameras then copy the files from each camera into their own folders. I then use ClipWrap to convert the MTS files into AIC. If the recording was one long contiguous session, many cameras will split the MTS files into 2GB chunks. ClipWrap will Convert Multiple to Span to reassemble them properly. With the AIC .MOV file from ClipWrap, I then use FCP X to Import the MOV files from camera 1 and camera 2. I prefer to do it that way versus using FCP X Import from Camera. I then move the clip from camera 1 onto the timeline in the "primary storyline" (FCP X terminology). I drag the camera 2 clip above the camera 1 clip and line up the audio from the two cameras while that audio is still attached to the video so everything stays in sync. FCP X has a way to automatically sync two soundtracks, but I have not gotten around to that yet. With camera 2's clip attached to camera 1's clip as a "connected clip" above the camera 1 video, I then do an edit to go between the cameras as seems best to me. When the connected clip of camera 2 video sits above the camera 1 video, it will take priority over the camera 1 video. I then split camera 1's video clip taking out sections when I want to go back to the camera 1 view. Of course I can trim camera 2's clips until I get it the way I want it. Since FCP X uses the magnetic timeline concept, and camera 2's clip is "connected" to the camera 1 clip, as you split and trim camera 2's clip, everything will stay in sync across the two camera "tracks". When there is no camera 2 video above the camera 1 video, camera 1 video will be seen. When camera 2 video is above camera 1 video, camera 2 video will be seen instead. With a single editing pass, I can then do all the editing I need to go back and forth between two cameras. The same concept is expandable to other camera "tracks" as long as you are using vertical position in the timeline to determine which camera is seen when. If you would like for it to look like a multi-camera track composit like before FCP X, you can simply select all your clips and make a compound clip out of it. You will then see the multiple camera clips side by side in a single "track". Double click on that "clip" in that "track" to go into the structure and editing individual "tracks" around if needed. Think of a compound track as what a sequence used to do. Anyway, there may be other, and easier ways to do this, but with a single edit through my recording, I can easily and visually cycle back and forth between camera views. It's just that things are called differently now ... and, as of this time, we do not have a single button camera switching function to let us view multiple cameras simultaneously and switch between them using a keystroke for each camera. Still, I have a way to do it, and it has worked very well for me, in fact I was pleasantly surprised at how easily I could do multi-camera in post. Hope this at least gives you one option. Others may have a better way. Best wishes.

}PLSQL does not go through Java to access the database. The actual access to the database is via the same mechanism for both, so in some sense, both perform about the same. However, PLSQL datatypes have the same representation as database datatypes so there is no conversion. Java datatypes have different representations than database datatypes so there is a conversion cost associated with moving data between Java and the database.
If your processing is simple and you are moving a lot of data, PLSQL is likely the better choice. If your processing is more complex and you are moving less data, Java is likely the better choice. There are other things such as portability you should consider, but the amount of data and complexity of the code are the first considerations.

A better way to make Automator mount a volume?
I made an Automator application, using the Record function, to mount a volume on a drive connected to my Mini. I also made a similar one to eject it. I use them as Calendar-triggered events as part of my backup scheme.
They work well ... until I restart the Mini, when occasionally my two connected drives will mount in a different order. What happens then is that the sequence of mouse clicks recorded in Automator don’t find the correct volume.
I wonder if there’s a better way to automate the mounting of a currently ejected disc (and later its ejection). Automator, as far as I can see, does not have the actions I need. It has Ask For/Connect to/Get specified Servers, but they seem only to be for network-connected stuff.
Anyone know a better way?Welcome to Unix.
The key part of that shell script code is the test for the existence of the mount point (if [ -e /Volumes/dbamp ]), followed by a conditional block that — in the "else" section involved when the mount point wasn't found — creates it, and then mounts an AFP file system on that mount point. Most of the rest of the baggage in that script is used to get the mysqldump database dumps over onto the target disk, once it's been mounted.
Here's a very quick overview of the basics of scripting , Apple's introduction to the command line manual, there's a generic bash intro (which is good, but doesn't line up exactly with how bash is implemented on OS X) and O'Reilly has some reasonable books on bash and bash scripting. A better way to deal with lost hyperlinks when converting Robohelp to Printed doc?
I have inherited a 750-page manual that is
"single-sourced" in RoboHelp X5. When I generate printed
documentation, all of my hyperlinks and converted to plain text.
Everytime we release a new version of the manual with any changes,
we have to re-generate, and then manually go into the MS-Word
converted document and re-create some 350 hyperlinks and page
number references. Somebody please tell me that there is a better
way to do this, or a better tool to manage single-source

You found that using the Style Mapping template solved the
images problem but the document stopped generating at 450 pages.
That was sort of what I hoped for. Rather than go to the step I
will suggest in a moment, I suggested you try something else but
you never came back to the forum to indicate you had tried it, so
the assumption is you did and it worked. Patently it did not so
let's try what I would have suggested next.
On my website there is a topic on Print Issues and one of the

thread. You can try RH's Multi file find and replace but FAR from
http://www.helpware.net/FAR
may get better results. I think with this error you usually get a
message. Do you have the Output pane opened and have you read right
through it for clues? View | Output on the menu. Whether or not the
Output pane mentions this error, I would search for it anyway.
Other Points:
A] It could still be a resource problem. The document is very
large so, as Harvey mentioned, resources come into it. I know the
PCs that won't play nicely have good resources but whilst I am no
expert in this area, don't foget XP is using more of them leaving
less available to you. It could be an issue but I am inclined
towards it being something else.
B] I also suggested a hunt for a rogue topic.
"What I would try is copying your layout so that you have
three versions of it. Then delete two thirds from each one. If all
three work fine, it sort of confirms that size is a problem. If one
fails, your on the track of the rogue topic."
Did you try that? Like I said, if all three work fine, then
we are back with the resource problem but we will have ruled out
other issues. It should take less than fifteen minutes to set that
up. Longer to run it but you can be doing something else at that
point.
C] On FrameMaker, no real answer but you will soon see
evidence that Adobe are continuing to better integrate all the
products we are using. I don't think you will see what you want in
the upcoming version though.

3] Then post back how it went. If unsuccessful, tell us if
the Output pane gave any information about things the process did
not like.

A better way to write last_day query
Hi folks,
I am looking for a better way to write a query to find last_day in month but if its sunday or holiday it should move to day before last day.
So for example if 31 is sunday it should go for 30, if 30 is holiday it should move down to 29.
I got this so far but the connect by level is hardcoded to 15. Want to see if there is a better way to get this working:
