Better way to sync sound for animation?

Okay, just did my first actual animation in AE and I have to say, there were some crazy workarounds I had to go through to find the audio points of interest and then animate to them, the project turned out half as good as I wanted.  Here's the link to the video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upm-rsBz1kE, anyone have some advice on a better way to do this?

There about a million ways to do this. It all depends on the project. You can use the puppet tool and record pin movements in real time by simply pressing Ctrl/Cmnd and then dragging the pins around with your mouse. If you have an audio track you can hear it. (works best if there's a countdown in the audio so you can start on cue). I've used Trapcode Sound Keys to animate scale. I've use the built in Convert Audio to Keyframes assistant in AE to do the same. I've used time remapping and markers.
You might want to check out this tutorial from Aharon Rabinowitz. It's just one of several techniques. If we knew a little more about your project we might be able to help a little more. Don't forget Google either.

Is there any way to Sync contacts from Outlook for Mac to iPhone 5? Apple support says that only iTune can only sync contacts from "Contact" which is the default contact of Mac. If one is running Outllok on a Mac machine then it is not possible to sync the contacts with iPhone. It is strange that Apple distributors are promoting and offering machines with promise that Windows users can now run MS Office on Mac machines without any problem. While this is true, it is so strange that one cannot sync the contacts from MacBook Pro to iPhone5. If someone has found a way to sync contacts from Outlook to iPhone 5 please help as it is very frustrating to not be able to sync the contacts. Thanks, Amit.

  • How To Capture Sync Sound for Film Project

Wisdom from the Greater Good Sought OR Please Point Me in the Right Direction
Gearing up to shoot and edit an independent feature. Everything shot on film (16 and 35) sound recored on DAT. Film will be Xfered to DV and DVCPRO HD. DV will be cut on new Powerbook G4 using offline RT. Online (still using FCP) will then be done on a G5 using the HD tapes. Should we sync the DAT audio with the film to DV and HD Xfer - or capture seperately with a DAT deck into the powerbook and sync up with FCP? Syncing during the film to tape Xfer seems the simplest - but may end up eating too much of our limited budget. What sort of workflow issues will I be in for if we decide to bring the DAT into the computer separately? What else do I need to consider?
Any thoughts, ideas, warnings appreciated. Thanks.

What Jerry says. About the only thing to be done with the DATs after that is pulling off all the wild tracks for the sound portion of the edit.
Locling them up in fcp is, to my way of thinking, a TERRIFIC waste of time and offers you the most potential headaches when thinks get unlinked.

  • What is the better way to join table for ASE 12.5?

To join table with T-SQL, there are 2 options:
    select * from tab1 a join tab2 b on a.id = b.id where x=y
    select * from tab1a, tab2 b where a.id = b.id and x=y
this is only a syntax difference or there is a performance difference? which one is better for performance?

The first query (using the join clause) is the ANSI standard way of writing joins and is usually supported by all mainstream RDBMSs.
The second query is the T-SQL method of writing joins and may have limited re-usability with other RDBMSs.
In most cases which one you use is usually one of preference, ie, which ever one you're comfortable with.
From a technical perspective there are some join constructs that you cannot build with T-SQL joins, but can build with ANSI joins (eg, you may have problems in T-SQL with a table that you want to be both a) an inner table of an outer join and b) part of a equi/inner join).
Soooo, ANSI joins provide you a lot more flexibility in coding as well as portability (between other RDBMSs).  But if you're going to work with ASE you'll still need to understand how T-SQL joins work as you'll see quite a lot of T-SQL join-based queries.

  • Correct way of using LayeredPane for animation

    Hi,
before I post my questions some background info (it has become quite a long story sorry for that, you can skip to the bottom if you want):
i'm not an expert java programmer so I appologize for any stupid questions or remarks.
Currently i'm implementing a road traffic simulation. Cars drive over roads, intersections etc. To make the movements/animation look smooth i've used doublebuffering or page flipping (I'm not sure while I used the getBufferStrategy() from a JFrame: strategy = frame.getBufferStrategy(); )
To add my own JButtons created from .png file I've switched off the RepaintManager by creating a NullRepaintManager. The simulation thread is responsible for calling the repaint function, which is done every few milliseconds after the positions of the cars are updated. These buttons are added to the ContentPane of the frame which is made non-opaque to make the roadnetwork and cars visible (*i don't understand this)
Btw I've 'borrowed' these ideas from 'developing games in java ' from Brackeen: http://www.brackeen.com/javagamebook/
    The roadnetwork and cars are drawn on the a Graphics2D by calling: (Graphics2D)strategy.getDrawGraphics(); first I draw an image of the roadnetwork to clear the old vehicle positions and then the new positions of the cars are drawn. after that the screen/frame is updated: strategy.show();
    This all works fine.
The problems start when I want to have a popup JPanel to appear on the screen after I clicked somewhere on the roadnetwork. According to Brackeen this can be done by initializing a JPanel and add it to the LayeredPane of the JFrame and make it visible when needed. This does not work while the JPanel never pop's up and I don't understand why not, because the demo from brackeen works fine. When I add this JPanel to the contentPane it does popup but the buttons are shifted to the right which is not what i want.
    Also I want to add a JMenuBar to the frame, i thought I could simply used: frame.tsetJMenuBar(menuBar);
however the menubar shows up next to my custom JButtons....
    ====>My Questions:
What is the correct way to draw smooth animations inJava without slowing down the whole program when quite a large area has to be draw... this seems to happen e.g. in the Java demos: ..\jfc\Java2D
How can I popup JPanels or internalFrames ontop of the animation?? probably by using the LayeredPane?
I also want to add a JMenuBar in the normal position.
Sorry for the long text and questions... but I'm struggling for almost two month with this now (using an increadible number of java books) and haven't solved it yet.
Any suggestions are welcome Thanks in advance!!
    Rens

It gets the first address from the pxelinux.0, another one is usually handed down after it boots, but sometimes it reuses it again.
Usually what happens on a diskless system is it tries to use the dhcpcd lease from the last diskless workstation (or possibly reuses the same one it gets from pxelinux.0).  But it has enough logic built into that it looks for another unique address for the next diskless workstation.
Do you have your pxeclient.cfg/default appended options set correctly to be ip=::::::dhcp?
Of course from the diskless wiki:
    label archxx
    kernel archxx/boot/vmlinuz-linux
    append init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd initrd=archxx/boot/initramfs-linux.img root=/dev/nfs rootfstype=nfs nfsroot=xx.xx.xx.xx:/srv/tftp/archxx,v3,rsize=16384,wsize=16384 ip=::::::dhcp

  • IPhone sdk: sync sound with animations

    Hi,
I am sure this is a very basic question. I would appreciate if someone can point me to the right directions.
I want to play a sound (say a song) and then perform an animation based on the beat of the sound. I guess it would be similar to creating visualizations that many media players have.
I would speculate I need to get notifications from the playback when sound pattern detects a beat and then drive animation absed on these events.
What classes/samples should I be looking for?
    Thanks

Be sure to plug the iPhone into a USB port on the computer, preferably in the back of the Mac Pro, and not to an external hub or keyboard port.

  • Is there a better way to edit and create a Page Size list for InDeisgn CC 2014?

I have about 65 iMac machines I'm responsible for at a publishing company.  The users need a specific custom Page Size list to display when setting up a new document.  It's a very long list of sizes for various products.  The only way I know how to edit this size list is to open the .xml file in Dreamweaver and edit the code.  I would like to know if there is a better way to do this for InDesign CC 2014.  At the moment I have to take this one file and install individually on all users accounts on all 65 machines.  Here is the path of the file I edit by hand:  Mac HD/Users/(User Account)/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 10.0/en_US/Pages Sizes/New Page Sizes.xml

There is no special folder for templates. You just put them where it makes sense to you, and you access the same way you would open any existing file.
The only functional difference between a template (.indt) and document (.indd) file is the default opening behavior. By default templates open as untitled copies and documents open as originals. You can change from one to the other just by changing the file extension.
The advantage of using a template over a document size preset is the preset only defines a page size. The template can include multiple pages, multiple master pages, styles you want to use, objects already in place, etc. And the use of a template removes the temptation to "recycle" an old issue of a recurring project. Starting each issue fresh from a known clean template reduces the risk of accumulated minor corruption that can eventually cause a fatal problem.

  • Sync sound mono stereo issue

I'm currently syncing sound for a short film on Premiere CC. I synced all the clips in the timeline and it all syncs and sounds great. But when I "merge clip" the clips audio in the bin changes. The sync is still perfect but the sound goes from stereo to mono and tracks are added. The audio on-set was recorded in two ways.
    1) 1 track stereo L+R
    2) 3 track mono
When I merge clips with the the 1 track stereo, it goes from being one track to two. And it's no longer L+R. Both tracks are centered. When I sync the 3 track mono it adds 6 additional tracks. the top track being the audio and the bottom two being empty. Then the 4th track has audio followed by two empty tracks. Then the 7th track has audio followed by two empty tracks. Why am I having this issue and how do I fix it?
Tom if you're here I could use your help. Thank you!
    Dan

The issue comes from multi-channel .wav files.
I've worked on projects with multiple audio sources where the sound guy recording each one as discreet .wav files. So if you had two lavs and a boom for a particular shot, each take would generate three distinct .wav files. It took slightly longer to align on the timeline for syncing, but when I performed Merge with them, everything worked fine.
But on my current project I was working with a different sound recordist who would record those multiple sources into a single multi-channel .wav file. They were all recorded mono, but on some shots it would result in 6 different recorded mono tracks. Premiere displays those multiple mono tracks in their own separate tracks, already lined up on the timeline.
But when I merge this audio with picture, the resulting clip is crazy.
When the audio is synced and merged with picture into a clip, it exponentially adds blank tracks. Normally, during a merge, stereo tracks are split into two distinct mono tracks, one for each channel and mono tracks should remain the same. That is what is supposed to happen. But as we see here, an additional thing is going on that shouldn't happen.
Instead, with multi-track files, it treats ALL of the tracks as singular multi-channel tracks and tries to "split" them by creating additional empty tracks. But the most bizarre thing of all is that the number of dupes is equal to the total number if tracks. So for a shot with two lavs and a boom, there would be three tracks in the one clip. But Premiere is treating each of the three tracks as if each of them has three channels and creates three tracks for each of them; one with audio and two blank ones, for a total of nine tracks. For shots with three actors on lavs and with a boom, there are four tracks that are multiplied four times, giving me 16 tracks. I even have some takes where the five original mono tracks are turned into 25 tracks. Again, only five of them actually have audio in them and the rest are blank.
It's exponential. Had I been given an 8 track file, it would be turned into 64 tracks but 56 of them would be blank!
To make it even more fun, the real audio is spread out vertically on the timeline with the dummy tracks in between also equal to the number of real tracks. So a merged 4 track clip places the real audio on tracks 1, 6, 11, & 16, but audio from a merged clip with 5 tracks puts the audio on tracks 1, 7, 13, 19, & 25. So I can't just do a blanket "Modify Audio Channel" on everything and delete the dead tracks. It is all relative.
After the clips were borked up with the extra tracks, I went to Clip->Modify->Audio Channels and turned off all the empty channels, then saved a preset based on how many tracks there were. So in my footage bin I was able to organize by Audio Info and it listed the number of tracks it had. So I could put all of my 12 Mono Track clips together, highlight them all, then apply my "12 Mono" channel filter preset to all of them at once. Then I dragged them back to the timeline and they were fixed. Technically, those blank tracks probably still exist, but they are no longer visible.
And better yet, it doesn't put any vertical gaps between them. So if my audio was really on tracks 1, 6, 11, and 16 it places them on the timeline in tracks 1-4.
Now that I have the presets I can apply it to any further projects where I encounter this. It is still idiotic and obnoxious but not as catastrophic as I thought it was.

  • What's the best way to browse keystrokes for ornament fonts?

I have a number of fonts that are non-alphabet ornaments, such as Monotype Rococo and Adobe Woodtype. I can look at a selection of the ornaments in Font Book, of course, but if I see an ornament I like, I have to guess which key to hit to get it. If it's the first ornament in the top row, of course I know I use capital A, but God help me if it's someplace in the middle of the fourth row. The obvious solution -- opening Keyboard Viewer and choosing the ornament font as the displayed typeface on the keys -- is unavailable due to some technical limitation of the later OS's that I don't understand.
Character Palette sort of works, but very clunkily. Basically, I pull up the latin alphabet, then go down to choose the ornament font in the Collections window below and then click letter by letter above. I do see the ornament each key gives me. But I'm seeing them one at a time and am giving up the at-a-glance scan of the available ornaments I'd have just by looking at a keyboard.
If anyone has a better way of browsing keystrokes for this kind of font, I'm very, very interested!
    Thanks.
    Rob

On re-reading and following your directions, I really should have given you 10 pts. for that answer, Tom, and not 5.  I'd somehow misunderstood the glyph view, thinking it was only a matrix of a certain standard, limited set of symbols, like arrow dingbats and such. I see the way it works now, and it's quite practical.
    Thanks very much.

  • EXIF Dates - how to add/change using exiv2 . . . is there a better way?

    Hi, everyone!
INTRO: I'm new to Lightroom. I've gone through a few books and lots of tutorial courses on lynda and youtube, so I feel quite comfortable with LR 5's import process. This post and question is a pre-import/organizational issue.
I have more than 30,000 old, digitized (scanned) photos dating back to the 1950s. Obviously, most of were taken with old, analog cameras. These are now organized into folders by date.
GOAL: I want to import these photos into LR and be able to find them by metadata dates (Capture Date & Time).
PROBLEM: Obviously, old scanned (or even more recent manipulated) photos often don't have the correct EXIF creation date info. Even worse, many (or most) of these old images don't even have an EXIF date field!
WHAT I'VE LEARNED: Using exiv2 filename or evix2 -pt filename immediately shows whether there is or is not date info for the photo. If there isn't, exiv2 -pt filename shows nothing. If there is an EXIF date field, it will be shown.
For all these images with no date field, if I import them into Lightroom, there of course is no date info that shows up in the Metadata panel (under Default or EXIF), nor can you change the date (because the field isn't even there).
If exiv2 -pt filename DOES show the Exif.Image.DateTime field, then in Lightroom, you will see the Capture Time and Capture Date fields, and you will see an icon to the right of those dates that allows you to change that date.
If exiv2 -pt filename DOES NOT show this Exif.Image.DateTime field, you can ADD this field by using the command line:
    exiv2 -M"set Exif.Image.DateTime Ascii 1965:01:25 15:45:00" filename (or whatever your date/time is).
Now if you import this image into LR, you will find the Capture Time and Capture Date fields under the Metadata > Default panel...AND you can edit them if needed. That is, the above exiv2 -M command added the EXIF date field that LR needs in order to search by date.
WHAT'S MY POINT, AND WHAT'S MY QUESTION? I have no problem using exiv2 to add/change an EXIF creation DateTime field one folder at a time prior to importing them into LR. This will enable me to search on those date fields**.
My question is this: Is there an easier method?
Surely there must be tens (hundreds?) of thousands of "older" photographers like myself who have troves of old photos that have incorrect EXIF creation date fields, or missing the date field entirely (in which case, as I stated above, cannot be added/edited using LR, PS, FileMultiTool, Graphic Converter, etc.).
I realize that I could look at images based on the folder names or file names, or I could enter dates into tags, but such methods of finding images are not nearly as convenient as using Metadata. Therefore, if I know that an image was taken in June 1962, then I'd like the EXIF metadata to have this info so that I can search on it. To have no EXIF date field or to have a date field that is incorrect is useless.
I'D LOVE YOUR COMMENTS! If there is an easier or better way, I'd love for you to help! There are so many experienced photographers on this forum, and more than likely many of them have old photos with incorrect or missing EXIF date fields that they've brought into LR.
THANKS! I'll really appreciate any and all help you can offer.
    David
** there are other EXIF date fields that can be changed using exiv2: Exif.Photo.DateTimeOriginal, Exif.Photo.DateTimeDigitized, etc. But the principal date that LR uses to search for files is the one described above.
P.S. I've also tried jhead -ds1965:01:25 filename (or whatever your date is) to change the date. This works ONLY IF there is already an EXIF date field present. If not, jhead will report an error and not create one. exiv2 -M will create the field.

    John,
Thanks very much for your help! I had tried the plugin, exiv2, exiftool, and LR's Metadata menu option only on a single photo.
You are 100% correct about LR's menu option assigning different times! Thank you for pointing this out.
When I set the date and time for about 10 photos, LR's menu option assigned (seemingly random!) times to all of them. Why would LR do this? I can perhaps see offsetting each photo by 1 second (00, 01, 02,...), but simply assigning random times makes no sense at all. At least in the tests I just did, LR didn't shift the time by the same amount, but assigned totally (random?) times to every photo.
Another problem that I found with the LR menu item is that it failed to change the date/time at all for several of the images I selected! The Capture Time To Exif plugin, exiv2, and exiftool had no problem at all with the same photos.
I also looked at the ExifMeta by Rob Cole that you mentioned. It looks very powerful (and is free), but much more complex than what I need at this point.
Therefore, I purchased the Capture Time To Exif plugin, and it works great on multiple photos.
I now have good methods to change the date for multiple images:
    1. Prior to import: exiv2 or exiftool
    2. After import: John's Capture Time To Exif plugin
Thank you again for your help!
This brings me one step closer to importing my photos in a logical method.

  • Sound for games doesn't work on iPad 2

Sound works on iPad 2 for everything except games. Is there some special way to get sound for games to work?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

  • How to mute sound for app?

Is there a way to mute sound for one particular app? In windows, you can do this from the volume control. It list each app and you can control volume there. I don't see a way to do this in Windows.
Particularly in gotomeeting, there isn't any mute available. Safari is the same way.

  • Animation - Lip Sync sound problems

Hey guys. I used to have Macromedia Flash 8 but I've now got

high quality, and then import the sound to timeline and for each

I used to be able to do this in the old version fo Flash and
I hope that you can help me with this.
    Thankyou,
    Ryan

I can't walk you though it step by step (*maybe somebody else can). But here are some things to look at:
Echoes in a particular room, especially without significan movement of the mic, fall at ver specific frequencies. They can be greatly reduced with careful use of extremely narrow parametric equalizations.
The following is non-FCP specific but you'll figure it out. The short story: you want to set up a parametric EQ with a narrow band and with the gain pumped up.
Now sweep the frequency up from the bottom until the sound gets really boomy and annoying. You just found one of those frequencies. Center the frequency where it sounds the lousiest.
Now turn the gain all the way down. The sound should be much better. Tweak the bandwidth and the gain until the most objectionable echo is taken out without affecting the desired audio too badly. This is subjective.
You're not done yet. Repeat this process with another parametric EQ, sweeping up friom the frequency of the first one. Repeat all the above. And so on until you've got a handle on it. Most of the nasty echos will be in the boomy bass area.
If you're really finicky, you may now find yourself going back and raising the gain on some of these to get back some of the audio quality. Echo isn't all bad, but there is definitely such a thing as too much.
I guess I do go step by step... darn, I don't have time for that!
