BEx Roadmap

Hi,
Ive been looking for a Roadmap for BEx but cant seem to find one. Is there an offical SAP document anywhere on the future of the Business Explorer (BEx tools) toolset? I think Query Designer has some sort of future and I now the other Bex Tools arent being developed only supported - to 2016?  But I'd like to see a formal document on the issue. Thanks.

Hi Joel,
In the overview tab of this topic you will find the related info:

  • BW (BEx) and BOBJ Reporting-Tools

    Hi All,
I'm looking for an article or anything, that describes the difference between SAP BW (BEx) and Business Objects- Reporting tools .
which tools is suitable for what purpose?
    thanks
    brad

This isn't mine - it may even be yours - but just in case anyone looks at this thread, here it is
    BO vs BEx
    Ease of use:
BO - Very user friendly interface, Minimal requirement for MDX code, Some queries take more time in BO analysis, when compared to BEx Analyzer
BEx - Difficult self service reporting and analytics, Being Excel based, it needs extensive VBA or Macro programming for a great UI
    Features:
BO - Export functionality (PDF, MSOffice etc), More chart types, Has more advanced features, Design and Preview Tab in the same page, Provides offline capabilities
BEx - Is mostly for SAP only but With integration can access BEx query from BO, Web App Designer is effort intensive, Build and preview are separate views
    Support from SAP:
BO - Part of SAP integration roadmap, All current and future dev. in the BI front-end is focused on the SAP BO BI solutions, Crystal Reports is now main reporting tool, replacing BEx Report Designer
BEx - BEx is no longer the strategic direction, BEx product line will be phased out completely by 2016
    Compatibility with other data source:
BO - Able to merge data from various sources in the same report, Can connect to any Database, very flexible in design
BEx - Gets data from BI
    Implementation effort and ownership cost:
BO - Longer deployment period compared to BEx, Additional server needed, May require additional components setup for BW, May need separate license for Business Objects Enterprise (BOE) platform, BO uses OLEDB for OLAP API via BEx query, may cause an overhead, BW Accelerator may be needed to improve query response time, scalability and visibility.
BEx - Only MS office and BEx client are needed for installation, BEx is bundled with NetWeaver

  • Best approach to "migrate" from BEX reports to Webi reports ?

    Hello,
i have read lots of documents regarding best practices on how to built webi reports and universes on top of BW.
But i can't find any document about best approach, not in performance way of thinking but in best way of using reports.
i mean: when end users are coming from bex reports (where they can drill down through hierarhies and use free filters ) to webi reports (where layout is quite beatiful and user can change it easely), this is not the same way of consuming reports.
I come from BO world and are new on reporting on top of BW.
for me webi is good for quite static layout reporting where data is clear and available.of course you can have prompts for interactivy and more accurate reporting.  Drill down is just a functionality but is not the real purpose of the report tool.
So ,according to me there is a gap between both tools (BEX and WEBI) but end users are the same.
So i 'm wondering if you have any feedback for the best approach to build webi reports where end users are coming from bex reporting.
And how to choose between prompts, drill-down (with available filters on top of the window), fold/unfold and input controls or just having diffrent levels of hierarchies in the table/ section/ breaks but without drill down (because if you drill down, report begins weird with diffrent levels) ...?
So , if you have any feedback , advise....
    thanks in advance,
    Rgds,

    Hi,
WEBI don't replace BEX reports, is for different audience, in fact BEX is for OLAP reports and analysis.

  • Future of BEx Query and BEx Query Designer

Folks, I understand SAP's future reporting tools is BO suite. All of us need to move to the new tools which are better or more reliable in 2010. Meanwhile our customers are reluctant to use BEx tools for any new development. Being on the techi side I dont see how BEx Query will be replaced by Voyager or Polestar or WebI or Crystal. I just need to report on my multiprovider without a universe layer. Have any of you experts come across documentation that layed out future of BEx tools explaining the end of support period? I have see roadmaps for tool availability but no dates for end of support.
    Thanks in advance.

    AFAIK,
Bex Query designer and BEx query will continue... Polestar might be proposed as an alternative for BEx but then it is meant for ad-hoc analysis ... but BEx query and Query designer have specific query requirements also...
Voyager etc will start coming in...

  • SAP BEx + SAP BO or SAP AA + SAP BO

    Hi Everyone
I have gone through a lot many articles on Advanced Analysis available on the Internet but the doubt still remains:
-Is SAP Advanced Analysis capable of replacing SAP BEx Analyzer and BEx Query Designer?
-Is there a separate license fee for SAP Advanced Analysis?
We need to zero-in on the selection of the best tool for the reporting and hence very confused between the selection from SAP BEx + SAP BO or SAP AA(Advanced Analysis) + SAPBO?
    SAP AA and SAP BO
    - All the complex logic can be processed using SAP Advanced Analysis and user interface will be Business Objects Layer
    - Ability to talk to disparate systems in single report
    - Add-in available for Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 too
    - It is a new product and hence it will take time for people to understand and implement it
    - Skill set is scarce
    - No successful Case Studies verifying the potential of the tool
    - It features into the future roadmap of SAP and hence SAP support will be available for the long term
    On the other hand
        SAP BEx and SAP BO
    - No additional license for SAP BEx as it comes with NetWeaver Stack
    - All the complex logic can be processed using Business Explorer and user interface will be Business Objects Layer
    - SAP BEx has matured over years and the likelihood of show stopper bugs is less
    - Skill set is easily available
    - Successful Case Studies verifying the potential of the tool
    - The support from SAP will continue for next few years
    - It no more appears into the future roadmap of SAP
    Please suggest !!
    Regards
    Gajendra

We still have to use both tools - BEx analyzer and Advanced Analysis.
Some of our users need the same query fed into the excel file many times, but with different years.
    Ex. (profit for 2005, 2006, 2007, etc...)
I could not achieve this with AA - however, it works well with Analyzer.
I beleive performance is better with Analyzer, but Advanced analysis is more user friendly/intuitive.
Our strategy is to use both tools on a case by case basis.
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • Webi in post-BEx world..?

    Hi,
I believe that the general direction from SAP is that BEx will be sunset in a few years, and that Voyager or its successor will be the way forward for this type of functionality.  Is this a valid assumption?
If so, since it seems like most BObj reporting uses BEx queries as the source for BI data (vs. directly from cubes etc), just curious if anyone has compared using Voyager vs BEx to source data from?
    Thanks,
    Darryl

    Hi Darryl,
take a look at the integration roadmap here at SDN in the BI area. that one outlines the future of all the tools.

  • BEx or Business Object

Since the union of BO and SAP, BEx will stay as the suite tool for buildind BI Apps??
or Business Object will replace all BEx suite?.
Nowadays . Certification courses are incluiding BEx in the syllabus and nothind abour BO, is this course un-upgraded?
    Best Regards
    Joseph

Anyone interested in how the BOBJ acquisition plays out really needs to review teh roadmap document and one of the SAP or ASUG presentations.  It is a complex and fluid situation.
While the roadmap appears to show many BOBJ products "replacing" existing SAP BI tools, you need to be careful.  Things like WebI, Xcelsius, Voyager/Pioneer are "premium" offerings - what that means is you will need to buy them - they will not simply be delivered to you as part of your existing BW base licensing.
There is even confusion about Crystal.  I was just at an event at SAP Americas HQ in Newtown Square.  A consultant making a presentation to the ASUG chapter reported that they had just met with SAP execs with one of their clients and was explicitly told that Crystal would also have to be licensed, however an SAP employee siad that you would receive a restricted license for Crystal as part of your BW base license, but it would only be usable to report on BW data. If you wanted to use it to report on R3 or other data sources, you would have to purchase additional licenses.  So I don't know who's right in this case.
Your BEx tools don't go away in 2010 - they are supported for several years beyond, at least 2014, or perhaps it was 2016, however they will not be enhanced beyond 7.1.  BEx Query Designer remains regardless.  You would still use the Query Designer, with quereis becoming the basis for BOBJ Universes.
Visual Composer also remains and will be enhanced.
It is important to understand what will be coming, and I don't think SAP has done a very good job of explaining how the BOBJ products must be purchased.  They need to provide more,  better, and consistent info regarding products, costs, etc.  I suspect they will be flexible on some of the licensing and if you have good negotiating skills and /or are a referenceable client, you may be able to do better.
Everyone should press their SAP Reps to clarify the Roadmap document and costs.

  • IF and ABS condition statement in BEX query designer

    Hi,
I would like to ask the best way for me to produce an acceptable result from Excel IF and ABS Condition statement.
The condition statement that I have on my Excel file is
    =IF((A2-B2)>0,ABS(A2-B2),0)
I'm trying multiple times to reproduce this in BEX Query designer, unfortunately I'm getting a bad result or unacceptable formula.
Anyone who could help me with my issue?
    Thanks,
    Arnold

    Hi Arnold,
    Thank you,

  • Inconsistency between Bex and Back end

Hello, I have a query about bex issue. I have few fields in my DSO/Cube which has data showing correctly in the back end but in Bex it shows partial of those values. like if i have something like this:
    ZField
    000000000000000000008
It shows correct in DSO table but in Bex it only shows the zeros. do you know why and how to get this to show the whole field value?
    Thanks.
By the way this is a characteristic and not keyfigure.

    Hi Vekant,
If you have not did any speecific thing at query level then value should be shown correctly.
Please try this once and check.
Create new test query on your data target drag and droup your charecteristic.please execute your test query and see if you are able to see the correct value.
    try this.

  • Error while trying to Open and Delete a BEx Query in Query Designer.

    Hi Experts,
I have been facing this issue with BEx Query in Designer mode for a couple of days now in Development Environment in BI 7.0.
I would like to Delete an unwanted BEx Query because I need to give it's name to another BEx Query.
Whenever I try to Open this Query in BEx Query Designer to Delete, it gives out an error saying:
"An error occurred while communicating with the BI server.
As a result of this error, the system has been
    disconnected from the BI server.
    Detailed Description:
STOP: Program error is class SAPMSSY1 method : UNCAUGHT_EXCEPTION
STOP: System eror in program CL_RSR and form GET_CHANMID-01 - (see long text)"
    Details text is as below:
    Diagnosis
This internal error is an intended termination resulting from a program state that is not permitted.
    Procedure
Analyze the situation and inform SAP.
If the termination occurred when you executed a query or Web template, or during interaction in the planning modeler, and if you can reproduce this termination, record a trace (transaction RSTT).
For more information about recording a trace, see the documentation for the trace tool environment as well as SAP Note 899572.
I have tried with SAP Note 899572, but still it's the same.
Has anyone faced similar issue? Could you please let me know if you have better ideas or solution?
    Your time is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chandu

Arun - Thanks a million. You saved me Nine. It worked.
Could you also please tell me how to rename (Technical) a Query or is it still "Save the Query As" the only way...?
    Points already assigned.

  • Report performance while creating report on BEx

    All all!
I am creating a report on BOE 4.0 on top of BEx connection as a source. I have developed reports on top of universe in the past and i know that if we keep calculations on reporting end it hampers the report performance. Is this the same case with BEx? if we are following the best practices is it ok to say that we should keep all heavy calculations/ aggregation on BEx or backend for better report performance.
Can you guys please provide your opinion based on your experiance and knowledge.  Any feedbacks will help! Thanks.

    Hi,
Definitely  best-practice to delegate a maximum of CKF to the Cube where possilble,  put RKF in the BEx query, and Filters too.
also, add Default Values to your Variables (this will speed up generation of the bics transient universe)
also, since Patch2.10, we are seeing some significant performance improvements  reducing 'document initialization' and  'time to prompts'  by up to 50% (step such as these often took 1.5 minutes, even on sized systems)
Also, make sure you have BW corrections like this implemented:  1593802    Performance optimization when loading query views
In the BusinessObjects landscape - especially with BI 4.0 - it's all about Sizing and Tuning . Here is your bible the 'sizing companion' guide : http://service.sap.com/~form/sapnet?_SHORTKEY=01100035870000738725&_OBJECT=011000358700000307202011E
Pay particular attention to BICSChunkSize registry settings
Also, the  -Xmx JVM Heap Size for the Adaptive Processing Server  that is running the DSL_Bridge service.

  • Concatenation of Data from 4 infoobjects into a single cell in Bex Report

    Hi,
I have loaded ODS with the description data. The source system for loading the ODS is the flat file. The ODS data should be a replica of the flat file.
In the flat file, there is a description field corresponding to a particular ID. This Description is greater than the standard 60 char length. So, I had to split the description while loading the flat file using single line routine in the Transfer Structure.
So, while loading different  the data, I split the description field data from the flat file into 4 infoobjects and the flat file data was loaded into the ODS.
Now, from the reporting point of view, I need to display the entire description data from the 4 info-objects into a single cell in the Bex report.
Please suggest a solution for this.
