Beyond kernel? [sovled]

I was interested in using gensplash, and I noticed that the beyond kernel already had this patch.  At the time of this posting I can not find the beyond kernel in the database.  Is not intuitively named?

It is still in Testing.

  • Archck 2.6.15 lack of ipw2200, beyond kernel and other issue

    Hi!
    I've installed archck 2.6.15 and ipw2200 and of course my wireless connections doesn't work. I see the gap because I suppose that archck kernels will be discontiuned and in this place beyond kernel will be in use but beyond is still in the /testing I think that is not ok for users, don't you think?
    Now I have to switch to standard kernel ....
    Regards

    beyond is fine for regular users. It's in testing because I havnt prepared ATI and all the other drivers for it yet.
    ArchCK 2.6.15 should have ipw2200, but the latest ipw2200 package doesnt includes a newer firmware version than whats needed for archck 2.6.15.

  • Unionfs and squashfs module packages for beyond kernel

    It's nice to see a unionfs package for the latest beyond kernel has appeared - as it hadn't been included in the kernel package (beyond4-1).
    Previous beyond kernels included the module.
    It's puzzling to see a squashfs package for the latest beyond kernel, as this module is still supplied in the kernel package.
    Could someone please clarify the situation ... what is actually intended?
    iphitus? phrakture?

    yeah, i accidentally left it out, a file management error.
    beyond4.1 has it, and ought to hit the repos tonight. we'll clear squashfs up too.

  • Lilo fails after latest beyond kernel (solution found)

    The lilo message is as follows:
    [root@n6re ~]# /sbin/lilo -v
    LILO version 22.7.1, Copyright (C) 1992-1998 Werner Almesberger
    Development beyond version 21 Copyright (C) 1999-2005 John Coffman
    Released 17-Sep-2005 and compiled at 14:59:07 on Sep 21 2005.
    Reading boot sector from /dev/hda
    Using MENU secondary loader
    Calling map_insert_data
    Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz26
    write map file: Input/output error
    [root@n6re ~]#
    Obviously, I cannot reboot since lilo failed.
    EDIT2:  Powered down and rebooted into arch kernel OK.
    Re-ran Lilo successfully.  Rebooted into kernel26beyond and received kernel panic with reference to cannot find hda3.
    rebooted into arch and added the following to Lilo.conf ...append="root=/dev/hda3 rootfs=ext3"
    Now must run /sbin/lilo -v again before running the beyond kernel....
    Will report back...
    Any ideas to correct the error in vmlinuz26 map file?  Mebbe corrupt download?
    EDIT:  Since the error in lilo references /vmlinuz26 (not /vmlinuz26beyond) I assume that the arch kernel listing in my Lilo has been affected.  The wiki introduces an append to replace ...root=/dev/hda3.... which I assume to mean in the beyond kernel listing only.  Perhaps it is needed in the arch kernel as well?
    Below is my Lilo conf.:
    # /etc/lilo.conf
    boot=/dev/hda
    # This line often fixes L40 errors on bootup
    # disk=/dev/hda bios=0x80
    default=arch
    timeout=50
    lba32
    prompt
    image=/boot/vmlinuz26
            label=arch
            root=/dev/hda3
            initrd=/boot/initrd26-full.img
            read-only
    image=/boot/vmlinuz26beyond
            label=2.6.16-beyond
            append="root=/dev/hda3"
            initrd=/boot/kernel26.img
            read-only
    image=/boot/vmlinuz26beyond
           label=cpio
            root=/dev/hda3
            initrd=/boot/ray.img
            read-only
    image=/boot/vmlinuz26
            label=cpio2
            append="root=/dev/hda3 rootfs=ext3"
            initrd=/boot/rays.img
            read-only
    #other=/dev/hda1
    #        label=dos
    It would seem that the arch kernel needs the changes as well as the beyond kernel which isn't made mandatory in the wiki.  Am I wrong?
    EDIT3:   Ran kernel26beyond and again received ...kernel panic.
    Rewrote lilo.conf to change the append to...append="root=/dev/hda3 rootfstype=ext3" in all lilo references to beyond kernel  and cpio boots.
    Reran Lilo and will reboot into beyond kernel and report result.

    Utilized qtparted in another arch HDD boot to re-partition via USB IDE as sda1 and enabled a larger /boot partition from MB borrowed from sda2 swap partition.  Ran /sbin/lilo -v in sda3 partition.
    After rebooting into original arch HDD, successfully, rebooted to kernel26beyond and received.... kernel panic-not syncing-attempted to kill init...
    Iphitus advised that my Lilo was in error...initrd=/boot/kernel26.img....should be...initrd=/boot/kernel26beyond.img..  This change in Lilo corrected the boot of kernel26beyond.
    The original Lilo config was obtained from the wiki "Configurin mkinitcpio" which lists the wrong lilo config which I followed for the kernel26beyond.
    A word to the wise>>>>>
    Edit:  Iphitus advises wiki has been corrected

  • Who's got a -beyond kernel?

    .... well, apart from me - and iphitus, of course.
    It will hit the repos tomorrow, for those who want a package. Me, I like doing my custom thing.

    woot!  I've been waiting for this.   Eagerly awaiting kernel26beyond, and the subsequent renaming, AGAIN, of all the -archck drivers.

  • Kernel 2.6.18 beyond?

    I'm using the beyond 2.6.17 kernel. Is there gonna be a 2.6.18 beyond kernel, or are the improvements in beyond already in 2.6.18 vanilla?
    Should I just switch to vanilla?

    Great!
    found this yet?

    found this yet? http://iphitus.loudas.com/beyond/2.6.19 … yond1pre1/
    or even better, this?
    http://iphitus.loudas.com//entries/14.html
    http://archlinux.org/~james/kernel26bey … pkg.tar.gz
    2.6.19-beyond1pre1, is just a short release, so I can get some testing done while I wait for a few more patches, and so I can do some thorough testing of my own.
    2.6.19-beyond1 will be out shortly, and will go to the repos.

  • Kernel-headers and kernel26-beyond out of sync?

    Hello,
    I am using kernel26-beyond (currently at 2.6.19), but every time a vanilla kernel gets upgraded, I get kernel-headers upgraded also (currently at 2.6.20). I wonder if wouldn't be better if there was different kernel-headers-beyond package for kernel26-beyond kernels? I am just afraid I could have problems while compiling some programs while vanilla and beyond variants of kernel are out of sync.
    I imagine this is valid for other variants of kernels as well.
    Another solution would be to release all the kernel variants at the same time, but I don;'t know if it would be possible.
    Regards,
    miko

    mykey wrote:Just to get this straight - only when glibc is compiled against new kernel-headers (e.g. 2.6.21) it is safe to upgrade kernel-headers (to 2.6.21) even if the used kernel version is still 2.6.19 ?
    yes, and glibc will be recompiled when the kernel headers are updated, so you're able to upgrade safely.
    You can use any kernel you like (within reason), it doesnt have to match the kernel-headers version.

  • Upgrade kernel beyond not booting anymore

    Hi
    upgraded with pacman -Syu without paying much attention to the output I guess. I had the beyond kernel. After a reboot I get the following error:
    Unpacking Linux .. Ok, booting kernel
    Initial ramdisk loading Modules ...

    it's possible that I copied some of the output incorrectly, since I did it by hand.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
    Thank you

  • [Solved] Kernel 2.6.17-beyond, suspend2 and raid swap.

    Hi all,
    I'm using the 2.6.17-beyond kernel (x86-64) and would like to resume with suspend2.
    My root and swap are parititions are software raids and this seems to cause some undesired behaviour.
    The resume (hook?) loads before the software raids are assembled durring boot. That mean it can't find / (/dev/mdX) or swap (/dev/mdY), hence I can't resume and it fallbacks to a normal boot.
    So, is there a way to force the raids devices to assemble before the resume?
    Some info from mkinitcpio.conf:
    MODULES="sd_mod sata_sil sata_nv raid0 raid1 ext3 reiserfs"
    HOOKS="base udev resume"
    grub.conf
    [code]

    That did the trick. Suspend2 works like a charm.
    Thanks for the quick reply.

  • Speedstep-centrino in beyond doesn't work

    Hi, I have Arch running on an inspiron 9400 with a core duo. If I boot into the normal arch kernel, cpu scaling works fine. But, in beyond it keeps saying:
    FATAL: Error inserting speedstep_centrino (location of *.ko file): No such device
    when I try to modprobe it. acpi-cpufreq does the same thing.
    I'm not sure how to get more verbose output, but the device does exist as scaling works in the non-beyond Arch kernel, in ubuntu, in suse, and in windows.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I've tried acpi-cpufreq and it does the same thing.
    Also (it might be related) networkmanager from aur can't find any network devices while in the beyond kernel. This all works in the regular kernel though. Normally, I would be just fine using the regular kernel, but beyond supports the suspend to disk and the suspend to ram where I can't seem to get either working in the regular kernel.
    I originally had the speedstep-centrino in the modules array and that's where I discovered the problem. Both speedstep-centrino and speedstep_centrino have the same problem. If there are others that have this working though, maybe I could just try and reinstall arch again and see if I have the problem again.
    LB06: your problem is different, I'm getting a No such device error while you are getting a device busy error. n3rlynx might be right about your problem.
    Thanks for the replies.

  • Some changes to -beyond

    Another beyond, still working on that troublesome suspend2 update. If you've had any problems, please update to this one, and let me know how it works.
    I have setup a bug tracker for beyond to make it easier to track and deal with any bugs that arise. If you have any problems, please post a bug at:

    I just changed to kernel-beyond and followed the wiki instructions (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gensplash) to install gensplash.  I too am finding this error message appears though as I've just changed I cannot confirm that it's just with this beyond kernel.
    The error I get is:
    No 8bpp silent picture specified in the theme configuration file.
    My /boot/grub/menu.lst:
    title Arch Linux Silent [/boot/vmlinuz26beyond]
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26beyond root=/dev/hda1 devfs=nomount ro video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-32@60 splash=silent,theme:darch console=tty1 quiet
    initrd /boot/fbsplash-darch-1024x768
    I generated the fbsplash-darch-1024x768 image using:
    splash_geninitramfs -v -g /boot/fbsplash-theme-1024x768 -r 1024x768 theme
    I also made the modification in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf as per the gensplash install scripts instructions:
    # Added fbsplash as per gensplash's instructions
    HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata filesystems fbsplash"
    FBTHEMES="darch"
    FBRES="1024x768"
    Wish I could help with this but not an area I know ANYTHING about.  Any assistance would be welcomed and appreciated however.

  • Cannot use kernel newer than 2.6.16-ARCH

    I just got myself a new laptop (Toshiba U205-S5002) and was excited as hell to get Arch installed on it. The install went well.. until I did a pacman -Syu.. my system would freeze upon reboot and the fans would turn on full blast. I did a reinstall and upgraded everything besides kernel26 and it boots up fine. I tried installing kernel26beyond and it does the same thing as before: freezes.
    I thought it was an ACPI error, since that's the last bit of text I'd see before the system would freeze, so I did some searching and found a handful of grub commands to try in order to get the system to boot with a newer kernel. I tried acpi=force, acpi=no, nolapci, and some others, but to no avail; the system just froze at different stages. It usually freezes around the ACPI: IRQ statements... other times it freeze at SMP PREEMPT.. and sometimes it says SMP Motherboard not deteched.
    I also read that it could be a gcc error. I did a `uname -a` to see which version the kernel was running the the space where it should be is blank. Not just missing, but there is whitespace where it should go. I did a dmesg | grep gcc and found that the kernel is running gcc 4.0, but the installed version (via pacman -Qi gcc) is 4.1 ...
    Does anybody have any ideas? This is driving me crazy.
    EDIT: more searching uncovered the "nosmp" option. I thought this was going to be my saviour, but, alas, it wasn't. It still hangs, but without all the SMP errors.  :x

    phrakture wrote:As far as I know, "nosmp" is crap.  Try recompiling without SMP support and see if that helps... if it does, this is a bigger fish.
    I compiled a custom beyond kernel with SMP disabled and it still managed to hang at the "ACPI: Host Bridge" something or another. Thinking that SMP wasn't actually the problem, and after doing some more forum and wiki searching, I compiled the kernel a second time with "ACPI Processor" disabled and it still hung at system startup.
    I'm compiling it again with both SMP and ACPI Processor disabled.. hopefully it works this time, otherwise I don't know what else to do.

  • Pactching kernel with fbsplash.patch (SOLVED)

    Never patched a kernel before and i'm having problems!!
    This what i've done so far (as root):
    1. Installed kernel26-ck (2.6.22-ck) with pacman and rebooted into arch using that kernel
    2. downloaded the fbsplash via (genpatches-2.6.22-1.extras.tar.bz2)
    3. put the splash.patch file into /usr/src
    4. made a symlink for current kernel in /usr/src; giving /usr/src/linux --> /usr/src/linux/linux-2.6.22-ck
    5. cd /usr/src/linux
    6. patch -p1 < ../splash.patch
    # NOTE: looking into using the abs method of PKGBUILD'ing a custom kernel with patches - hopefully i'll do better!!
    The best way to do this is by emulating the abs versions of the standard kernel as described in these forums
    1. copy the abs version of the stock kernel26
    2. adjust the PKGBUILD to include spock's patch (not gentoo's)
    3. makepkg
    4. pacman -U the new kernel
    Then get on with fbsplash!

    I used to use kernel26-beyond kernel with fbsplash. Recently I found out that with this kernel any attempt to mount ntfs disk end with system hung. Can anyone write step by step what shuld I do?
    Thanks for any help in advice.

    Not that it answers your question but I have been using the latest beyond kernel since it came out and have had no problem with mounting and using ntfs disks resulting in system hangs. Also I have recently been using ntfs-3g which allows safely writing to NTFS partitions. I am using it for backups on an external USB drive with an NTFS file system. Give ntf-3g a shot before patching the kernel.

  • Ndiswrapper-beyond package

    It seems that in the huge upgrade, there was an update for ndiswrapper-beyond, however this driver seems to be compiled with the new gcc and the beyond kernel is still compiled with the "old", which means that i can't modprobe it:
    ndiswrapper: version magic '2.6.16-beyond SMP preempt 686 gcc-4.1' should be '2.6.16-beyond SMP preempt 686 gcc-4.0'.
    Anyone might have the old package or something?
    This kinda annoys me because I am experiencing crash with cedega and other issues with 2.6.17, so I just want to use the beyond.
    I have thought about recompiling the beyond package myself with new gcc, but I got some make error + md5sum mismatch.
    Thank you in advance.

    Thats all well and good... Unfortunately I cleared the package cache after upgrading (I know I should have at least waited until I knew that everything worked but well... whoops...)
    Still, I expect that the testing repository is for... surpise... testing! NDisWrapper blowing chunks shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone who actually bothered to test it. It's fairly apparent that somebody compiled ndis and never bothered to see if it worked or not. I'm sure it was an honest mistake or oversight but it's still annoying. Things should NOT be let out of testing if nobody has in fact tested them. That's just common sense.
    All in all, I'll chaulk it up to a mistake on my part. I should have kept the old package of ndis around in case I had to downgrade. It's happened to me before because ndiswrapper seems very, very fragile for me and I've had troubles before.
