Beyond Oracle Designer - data modeling

Dear All,
has anyone of you left Oracle Designer successfully? If you have a good modeling tool in your hand then please share its name and your opinions about that with me.
Thanks,
Franky

Franky, I'm still using Designer. I know it hasn't really changed at all in the last 10 years, but at least it works, it's well integrated with Oracle and I know my way around the repository.
I have looked at other tools over the years. Some have better version management; others have better integration with non-Oracle databases. You pay your money and you make your choice. It all depends what you need.
Are you building business level ER models? Are you just documenting database schemas? Do you want a UML to nuts solution? What diagramming notation do you prefer? Do you need version control? multi-user? multi-site? checkin/checkout? etc etc
Some (free and paid for) tools listed on this 2002 page.

  • Generation of DDL similar to Oracle Designer (Data Modeler 3.0 EA1.)

    Hi,
Will the production version of SQL Data Modeler allow the creation of separate DDL files similar to that which Oracle Designer does? For example, I can create a sequence number generator in Data Modeler (DM) and then make a call to that in an Object Type method. However the DDL file that is generated by DM has all DDL in one file. This would allow to take dependencies were taken into consideration, that is create the sequences before object types, packages and tables, then object type bodies, package bodies, etc...
    Thanks,
    ScottK

At this stage we do not support multiple files. We do plan to do this in the future. However you can work around this by repeating the DDL generation for the different objects types you want to have files for.

  • Oracle Retail Data Warehouse (RDW) Vs Oracle Retail Data Model??

Oracle Retail suite of applications include Oracle Retail Data Warehouse (RDW) application. It is integrated with Point of Sale via TLOG and other applications. Is Oracle Retail Data Model leveraging the existing data in RDW? If we use Oracle Retail Data Model, RDW becomes redundant?

Oracle Retail Data Model is independent of RDW and RGBU applications. It can be used with RMS and Point of Sale, but there is no pre-built ETL to load the data included with the product, although there are some options available thru partners.

I have an application of oracle network data modele witch contains node , link , plink and path tables. and i like to view this whith mapviewer application on web page, i was setup mapviewer 10.1 with OC4J and i saw the mvdemo without errors ... please get me the steps to do for visualizing my network.

First may I recommend that you use the latest MapViewer quick start kit, which is 11g R1.
On your mapviewer web site, if you click the "Demos" tab, there is a link to a simple Network demo page. Have you tried using that? You should populate it with your own network data (network name et al). Let us know if you need more information on how to make this demo work with your data.

  • Oracle SQL Data Modeler -COMPARE/MERGE

    Hi all,
I am trying to compare/merge or just trying to merge a relation model with another in Oracle SQL Developer DATA MODELER.
    Scenario:
I have tried to import from data dictionary the hr schema into 3 parts.
Table employee is alone imported in one design model's relational model(say DataModelerDesign1- DMD1).
Table Departments,Locations and Countries in another design model's relational model(say DMD2).
Table Job_history,Jobs and Regions in another design model's relational model(say DMD3).
Now, I tried to merge all this into one design model's relational model, here into DMD3.
    Requirement:
I want all of this relational model's tables to get merged with exact mappings as if it is in HR schema all connected to each other. But they are all getting merged as separate entities not conencted to each other when taken from Compare/merge option. How should i do this task?
    Issues:
    1) I can never see anything in the compare model when i try to click on view compare mapping. Can anytime we see any data here?
    2) In realtime scenario, when will we try to merge a table into another or split it. Because some foriegn key violations are happening here. Is it ever possible to succeed our requirement while merging itself instead of creating relationships between entities manually in main relationship model DMD3 in example here.

I have found on occasions the diagram pdf would be missing a few relationship lines. Usually it happens after I have been doing a lot of work in the tool or printing a bunch of diagrams. Seems to be a memory leak of some sort. If I close Data Modeler, re-open it, then print to PDF, the diagram is fine.

    Hi ,
I am using Oracle report 10G
And trying to create report with dynamic table
    SELECT &COL1, &COL2
    FROM &TAB
If I put this on data model it gives below error
    ORA-00936: missing expression
    ==> from
Can anybody advise to solve this issue.
    Regards,
    Brajesh

Look in the Reports Builder Help:
If you want to use lexical references in your SELECT clause, you should create a separate lexical reference for each column you will substitute. In addition, you should assign an alias to each lexical reference.
Does adding the column alias solve the problem?

File is corrupted, you can import the excel into dashboard using import button.
Design you need to come up with your navigation first and what you need to display in dashboard. If possible explain that we can help you better on this.

  • Oracle Designer : Process Modeler vs. Dataflow Diagrammer

    Hi,
I have several questions about the integration between Process Modeler and DF Diagrammer, they seem to be quite similar, even if in the first we can define Organization Units (that are equal to Business Units), while in the second tool we can add the information about the entities and attributes related to a certain function, specying better the data flow between business functions.
So, it seems that both tools are necessary to decompose business process, to specify which organization units perform a certain activity, to definy dataflow and which entities/attributes are related to a certain business function.
In this case, what is the correct way to use both these tools, avoiding creating double diagrams (one with the Process Modeler, the other with the Dataflow Diagrammer) ? Does anyone know if there is any guideline provided by Oracle ?
My idea is to create a huge DFD, using all the process steps defined within the Process Modeler at the lowest level of the diagram (including them as global functions), specifying the dataflow between each other and the entities related to the single process steps (in the DFD they are called business functions).
Has anyone ever followed an approach like this ?
    Thank you very much !!
    Flavia & Rodrigo

Unfortunately, these two diagram tools are not as well integrated with Designer as I would like. They also do not play well together. Normally, I want a process model to show an overview, and want to choose whether to hide the details of a process, requiring a drill down, or expand them on the same diagram. In a DFD, however, I always want to drill down to expand each process. In Designer, you must choose, break processes into sub-processes, or have one big process, you can't have it both ways. Effectively, I must choose to use the Process Modeller or the Data Flow Diagrammer, but not both. For communication with users, I prefer Process Models, but having one big process not only screws up the DFD, it also screws up the Functional Hierarchy Diagrammer, which eventually can screw up any menus you generate.
There is also a problem with the "swim lanes" in the Process Modeler. They have nothing to do with the External data sources and sinks in the DFD. They also don't generate security and role information in the physical design.
These are areas where Designer could use some improvements, but it isn't going to get them. Oracle has decided that Designer is "mature" and is now in maintenance mode.

  • Dimension table design Data modeling question

    Hi Experts,
Sorry if I am putting my question in a wrong forum and please suggest an appropriate forum.
need your opinion on the existing design of our 10 years old datawarehouse.
There is one dimension table with structure like following
    Dimension Table
Dimension Key Number (THIS IS NOT A PRIMARY KEY)
    Natural key (from source) Number
    source name character
    current record indicator char(1)
    form_date date
    to_date date
many other columns, which if change a new current record is created and previous is marked as H-historical
Data is stored in the dimension table like this
Dimension_key Natural key Source Name current record ind from_date to_date
    1 10001 Source1 H 1-jan-2005 31-may-2005
    1 10001 Source1 H 1-jun-20005 12-dec-2011
    1 10001 Source1 C 13-dec-2011 NULL
    2 20002 Source1 H 1-jun-20001 12-dec-2011
    2 20002 Source1 C 13-dec-2011 NULL
The problem I see in this design is that there is no surrogate key, if any attribute is changed the new record is inserted by first taking the dimension key based on the (natural_key,source_name,current_record_ind).
Shouldn't it be stored like following based on the data-warehousing principals.
Dimension_key Natural key Source Name current record ind from_date to_date
    1 10001 Source1 H 1-jan-2005 31-may-2005
    2 10001 Source1 H 1-jun-20005 12-dec-2011
    3 10001 Source1 C 13-dec-2011 NULL
    4 20002 Source1 H 1-jun-20001 12-dec-2011
    5 20002 Source1 C 13-dec-2011 NULL
Please let me know the pros and cons of the current design.

And what if you have both the features something like this :
Lineno  Dimension_key Natural key Source Name current record ind    from_date         to_date
         1              1       10001     Source1                  H   1-jan-2005     31-may-2005
         2              1       10001     Source1                  H  1-jun-20005     12-dec-2011
3              1       10001     Source1                  C  13-dec-2011            NULLI mean just add a new column and populate it with required order by clause. Because what i guess, that in the second example you just added a new column which is something like a line number.

  • Go beyond the blob data model?

is it possible to build a richer data structure for the value?
right now it's a blob/bytes array. is it possible to provide a hook to the insert() code
    so that when we call
    insert(key, some_value)
we do not simply write the "some_value" to overwrite the old value, but we provide an operator
    insert(key, op)
so that after the node corresponding to the key is found, the operator is carried out, with the old blob value being fed
into the operator. i.e. op(old_value), op() could update the old value in place.
would this model be useful to other users?
the reason I am bringing this up is that I experimented with abstracting out the storage engine of apache Cassandra. it currently uses its own storage implementation. the current storage implementation allows partial updates to a value to be done in place, so that if you have a lot of operations such as adding a delta to a value , like adding a user's action to a list of past action history, you do not need to serialize and deserialize the entire record every time.
    Thanks a lot
    Yang

The first step would be for you to come up with a serialization format such that you can quickly calculate, for a given field, what bytes the field occupies and therefore what bytes to replace, without having the deserialize the entire record. If you have that, you can use JE's DatabaseEntry.setPartial feature to replace those bytes.
This avoids deserialization and serialization. It does not avoid having to read the entire record (the whole byte array) and write it again, when the record is read from disk into cache and written from cache to disk. There is no way to avoid that with JE.

  • Oracle Designer Import - Missing Application Systems

    Hi,
I'm tryiing to import an Oracle Designer data model into SQL Developer Data Model 3.0, which I downloaded today. I seem to have my connection to the Designer repository set up OK and I can select the non-versioned Workarea. When I click Next none of my application systems are displayed. The Oracle Designer build is 9.0.4.6.19 and the the DMBS is version 10.2.0.4. Any suggestions as to what I'm missing, greatly appreciated.
    Ian

    Phil,
Any idea on liikely timeframe for a fix? Our situation is basically that we are worried about potential issues with Designer as we upgrade to Windows 7 and Oracle 11gr2 some time next year. Other parts of the company use PowerDesigner and that is one alternative; we're hoping Oracle Designer will continue to work but we want to be proactive and we'd also like to look at the SQL Developer Data Modeler 3.0 as another option. I can show people here some of the features, but a clean import of the Designer data would be a huge plus as we have 3,000 + database objects. If this is something that is slated to be corrected reasonable short-term, I'll just wait to give any demonstrations and push the product further until that functionality is available. Alternatively, if this is not available any time soon, I can try to demonstrate some of the functionality with a "build from scratch" modeling exercise.
    Thanks,
    Ian

  • Data Modeler goes to Oracle Database Repository ?

    Hi Philip,
Thank you very much for your quick answer. Hope that this forum is the correct one right now.
To us it seems to be inpossible to use the data modeller v3.1 with SVN.
The recent designer-toolbox hasn't been updated by Oracle since 2007.
That's why we have created various interfaces and workarounds of our own:
    A cg-refcode-interface with multilingualism, a table- and module-api, a hyperion application
to generate ddl-statements from case-repository (using user-extension for the new features of v10g).
These interfaces would not be possible with XML structure and would be discarded.
Central data modeling is a strategic approach for our company (financial) and has been
    classified with risk class 1.
Because of this fact, I'd like to ask again:
Is there a timetable for converting Oracle's Data Modeler from XML structure to database?
By the way: This was promissed by Mrs Sue Harper in 2007.
    Regards,
    Reinhard

    Hi Reinhard,
To us it seems to be inpossible to use the data modeller v3.1 with SVN. Why is that? Is it forbidden to use SVN in your company or you have other reasons.
Is there a timetable for converting Oracle's Data Modeler from XML structure to database? Not for functional repository. We have reporting repository and our target is all information to be there. You can have history of your designs (snapshot at specific time) in reporting repository and then you can run your tools against it.
That's for the moment. I'm not going to make other promises.

  • Path direction in Oracle spatial network data model

    Hi all,
can any one help me how to implement path direction using oracle network data Model?
We are using Oracle Spatial database. there is one feature called network constraint in Network data Model. but how to implement path direction of my Network ? Please help me any one

The path direction in a Spatial network is enabled at creation time when calling the create network procedure such as SDO_NET.CREATE_LOGICAL_NETWORK. If you describe the Create procedure you're using you should see a IS_DIRECTED argument, which when set to TRUE will enable path direction. Then just ensure that your links are created in the right direction -specifying correct orientation for start node and end node.
    Cheers,
    Stuart.
