BFG 6800 Ultra causes K8N Neo2 Platinum to not POST - Problem finally resolved!

I'm able to run with an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and a PNY 6800 GT with no problems, but as soon as I plug in my BFG 6800 Ultra I can't get it to POST. The D-Bracket indicates it's doing "Processor Initialization". I don't see any output at all even though steps prior to "Processor Initialization" should be writing a few things to the screen. I should be getting plenty of power as I've got a good PSU and have two of the lines going to the BFG and nothing else. I've tried using several different combinations of lines as well so that doesn't appear to be the problem. I've already changed all the usual suspects in BIOS that might affect the AGP. I've also put the BFG in a crappy Dell system with a crappy PSU and it handled it just fine.
Anyone got any suggestions? I can't seem to find anyone else reporting this problem so apparently I'm the lucky one. Pleeeeeaaaaase! Someone help me fix my problem!

Keep in mind that not all Motherboards regulate their VCore and VDimm almost entirely from the 12v rail. However while it does task that rail it does provide a way for the manufacturer to provide more stable voltages and power. So different boards will react slightly different based even on the same exact set of parts. With so many parts needing 12v these days you have to make sure the PSU is up to supplying enough for everything.
The second thing is how differently each MB sets up in Bios. This can have quite an impact on RAM timings. Loosen up the timings a tad and maybe things will also go a tad easier. However if you can't get any poost then you may have to try an older stick of something like PC2100 or somesuch so that you can enter Bios and set appropriate timings for the RAM you want to use.
Third you can read the various stickies like Basec Building tips to help you get things properly setup.

  • News - BIG PROBLEM - MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum - DOES NOT POWER!!!

    Hi to everyone.
I'm a proudly owner of a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum that in one year gave me no problem until yesterday morning.
I used the computer in the night before and when I finished I turned it off and I went to bed.
Yesterday morning I found the power led blinking (like if the system was in standby), and there was no way to turn the PC on.
I even took off the battery for more than 12 hours and I left only minimal components installed:
the video card (Gainward GeForce 6800),
    the psu (Antec TruePower 550W),
    1 x 512 MB Ram Crucial Ballistix,
and I checked them into another computer and they work perfectly.
I tried shorting the MB power switch pins with a screwdriver and I've even tried to power on the system without the Memory or the Video Card... I've tried everything that came across my mind with no efforts!!!!
Every time I give power to the MB appens only that the power led starts blinking, but pressing the button the PC doesn't turn on.
PLEASE HELP ME... I really don't know what else to do!!!
    Thanks,
    Alberto

    Hi thanks for the answers.
I do have a D-Bracket, but my problem is not that the system does not boot or does not post... my system DOES NOT POWER ON (!!!!), so d-bracket is useless!
When I plug the system power    the only thing that happens is that the power led starts blinking (with the system still in soft-off), and if I press the power switch button nothing happens!
I've the bios for 7025 v1.8 and the settings where for OFF on power-loss ond pressing the button (can't rememeber if it was more than 4 sec) was meant to turn off the computer, but considering that I un-powered the pc more than once without the MB battery the settings should be factory default by now.
I went through the Windows-XP shut-down system, and i could not be an electrical problem as I always used the PC with a pretty good UPS unit.
Right now these are the full specs of my sytem:
    - MB MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 Ultra
    - GAINWARD 6800 2600 GLH 256 MB Ram
    - PSU Antec TruPower 550 W
    - CPU AMD64 3500+ core Winchester @11*210 Mhz (this cpu has never overclocked very well)
    - HEATSINK Thermalright XP-90 with a 12 Cm Enermax Fan (CPU temp in always below 55 °C when stressed)
    - 1 x 512 Mb RAM Crucial Ballistix DDR400 optimized for  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
I left only these things inside my computer in the hope that it would turn on... it did not work. I tested each component but the MB, and they work perfectly.
    Again...
Thanks for you efforts, any help will be appreciated.
    Alberto.
All parts have been tested: CPU/RAM/GFX/PSU/HD/DVD,  just not the MOBO ?
Checked if the MOBO is shorting in the case ?
Have you tried using the reset switch as power, on/off switch ?  I've seen before when the power switch stops working (lose/bad wire busted spring) after swapping  reset to power, then the system turned on. Worth a try, as sending it back to USA won't be cheap. If its over 1 year old it mite not be covered by the re-seller and or MSI. Best to check this out as law and warranty is different from country to country.
    Good Luck

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum 7125 not posting after overclock testing okay

    Hi Guys,
I'm having a real stinker of a problem with my 7125 board.  I have all good components, but can't seem to get this bastard to post reliably when I'm overclocking.  I was thinking that it was my power supply so I bought a new Antec Neo3 650W supply and it doesn't matter.  I also got a new Opteron 165 processor and it still has problems.  I even RMA'd my board and then sent me a new one.  Here is my setup.
    7125 ver1
    Opty 165
    Crucial PC3200 Ballistix
    Nvidia PCIE Gforce 6200 video
    Antec Neo3 650W
    2x Seagate SATA 80gig (matched) 7200.9
RAID 0 via the SIL 3114
extra 160 gig HD (using the Nvidia SATA port)
Pioneer DVD 109 DVDRW - pri IDE
Sony DRU-820A DVDRW - sec IDE
    Hauppauge PVR150
3.5" card reader (connected via internal usb header)
    Lian Li case
When I run the system at stock speeds everything works fine, including the initial posts.
However, when I overclock, everything is erratic.  Sometimes, I can overclock the entire system to 290x3, 166, stable memory settings, and prime 95 orthos the  out of it for days on end (max CPU at 49C), but when I select restart in windows, it shuts down fine, but will subsequently not post. I have to hit the reset key several times, then it recovers itself and undoes the overclocks.
I have tried all sorts of memory timings from the crucial info - it recommends 2.8V and 2-2-2-8 timings.
I have heard that my memory is good for overclocking, but I'm now starting to wonder if it is the MSI Neo4 board or the Nvidia Nforce 4 ultra chipset.
Could it be the Raid 0 on the Sil 3114?  I haven't messed with this as I would rather have a RAID 0 setup, then a little overclock.
Is there a good NF4 ultra board out there that is better than this?
I can't imagine anything else to do except keep spending more money to eliminate more variables.
    Your thoughts?  Thx Nick

relax your CPU HTT freq. by 10-20Mhz and retest.
relax your memory timings e.g. from 2-2-2-8 to 2.5-3-3-8, to findout from where its comes then find optimal settings.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum freezes on post/windows

I searched the forum, but couldn't find an answer to my problem. My computer seems to freeze on post screen with d-bracket leds usually pointing to a problem with Testing Base and Extended Memory. Sometimes (1-5% of reboots) it freezes on Boot Attempt. When after 10-20 tries I get it to boot windows, it freezes on loading Windows or a few minutes after logging in or even after 12 hours of using Windows, no matter if comp is idle or 100% cpu usage.
It started a few weeks ago when I noticed that my comp had frozen in the middle of the night while I was sleeping. Then it started to froze sooner and sooner and now often freezes in the middle of post. I've taken my mobo and all out of case and tried every combo of RAM I have to no avail. Doesn't seem to matter which dimm slot I use, it still freezes. I've run memtest86 and all ram sticks passed. Second time I tried later, the test froze like Windows usually does in this case (memtest manual said this could happen). CPU doesn't show any sign of overheeting: now at 41C (comp has been ~1 hour on). I used to have 2 other HDs and a dvd-rw drive on, but removing them didn't help. Also the configuration of my comp has been the same for about a year before this problem started. I've tried a different videocard (ti-4200), didn't help. I don't have another PSU that's as good as the current one, but I would think removing components would help if it was a power supply issue? Or changing the videocard to a less powerful one would? But it didn't. I don't have another 939 cpu so I can't test if it is the cpu and not mobo that's crashing, but somehow I doubt it would be.
    I'd appreciate all answers.

Get a new cmos battery and replace the one on your mobo .
Theese sympthoms you have are pretty much the same with a dying battery .
I bought a new battery, but it has no effect. Forgot to mention in the first post that I tried updating BIOS to 1.C, but then it didn't find my HDs and it kept freezing still, so I changed it back to v1.2.
It seems that when I boot my comp after it's been off for a night or so, it freezes pretty soon in the post and I have to reboot something like 10-20 times before it stays on for 15 minutes to a few hours. But if my comp has been on for some time, even tho it's crashed and had frozen a night before, when I then reboot it usually stays on for sometime (15min to hours) without having to reboot 10-20 times (maybe only 1-5 times). It's weird. Somehow seems that it stays on longer when it's "warm".
Any ideas? This mobo is over 1,5 years old and I don't think there's any warranty left.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum (7025) Nvidia LAN problem

Just noticed that Nvidia LAN is working in very strange way(was using Realtek one before).
If I connect to the router, it can automatically acquire network address, but I am not able to ping the router! Status window shows "0" packets received and nothing happens.
If I connect to ADSL router, I can connect to Internet through it (!?), but - I still cannot ping the modem, status still shows "0" packets received, and it is acquiring address at least every 30 seconds, constantly displaying Network disconnected - connected.
There is no IRQ for Nvidia LAN, but it "is working properly".
    How this is possible?
    Thanks.

I think I have done evetything possible - reinstalled drivers (5.10; after cleaning with drivercleaner), repaired winsock etc.; except haven't reinstalled Windows. I have now tried the bundled drivers  (Ethernet NRM driver version 4.42 (WHQL)), 5.11 and 5.10, and the result is exactly the same.
Connection can obtain autoconfiguration IP address, but in status window there is 0 received packets.
Also, cannot ping router or whatever is connected (neither can view router's configuration page).
Could it really be hardware problem? I think I need some expert advice.
It is unlikely that it would be possible to get IP address without physically receiving anything. I have tried to connect to the same router with Realtek connection without any problems, also with some usb LAN, so it cannot be a problem of router too.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum will not boot

Hello Poeple , I was wondering if anybody could help me , I have purchased a new board and the thing lights up for about a 1/2 second then the power supply shuts down, I have taken all the components off the board including the ram and processor , and still the same problem. The power supply is a 500 watt casecom model, the processor is 3.2 , Has any body got any thoughts on what i could try next? or is it a faulty motherboard.
    Thanks in advance .
    Scott

look at some other posts here, maybe try searching for help. look in the troubleshooting guides
if you'd seen other posts, you'll know that with little information that you have provided, you'll just get vague answers
list your hardware details in full, maybe even create a signature, then you don't have to keep repeating them when you start a new post
and look at the label on the side of the PSU, and list the amp ratings for the 3.3v, 5v and 12v rails

  • Help! My new K8N Neo2 Platinum will NOT play any sound from the on board card!

Does anybody have any idea what to do with this? I've updated the drivers and still it doesn't work... I haven't a clue what could be happening...

Sorry for being so vague guys... Well yes I've tried all the above suggestions, it's plugged into the rear ports on the back of the motherboard, I did try using the front ports but to no avail... In the sound manager I try to set my speaker configuration and it keeps crashing... Also in multimedia it can't find the device even though it is listed in device manager... Currently I'm using two Labtec speakers plugged into the line out port and it still isn't working. I haven't tried plugging it into any other device as i don't have any other devices or the knowledge on how to do that. :D
I hope that might be of some more use...

  • MSI Neo2 Platinum will not POST, but fans spin.

I bought this board about 2 months ago.
I install the board and it works fine, until a few weeks ago. Im playing fear and it crashes into BSOD...then every time i try to load a game BSOD. This points to the memory- so i look at my DDR booster, and teh memory is a little off...i correct it and the game loads fine. I play for a little longer, then exit to windows and then the computer just starts BSODing like every 5 minutes. So i was like " it" im going to cut the memory back...strangly, the only dividers that work were 133 and 183...the rest just did not work.
Then finally, i restart the computer, and no POST screen. I clear CMOS, nothing. Take the battery out for an hour, nothing. Take the memory out, no POST...I dont get it...the fans spin and everything powers on, but no signal is sent to the monitor.
Then today, a few weeks later, I plug in just a PSU and a video card.  Same thing happens:  Fans spin, no POST.  oddly enough, whenever power is supplied to teh mobo it turns on, it doesnt wait for a power button to be pushed.
2 things that might help diagnose the problem:
Almost every BSOD pointed to ntfs.sys
The PSU makes that clicking sound like its restarting about every 10 seconds when i boot up and there is no POST.
Anyone know what i need to do? All other componants work fine in a AV8 3rd Eye, so it is the mobo.
    Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum.  Please post complete system specs by creating a "sig" as described in the forum rules. Be sure to include complete power supply specs (brand, model and amps on 3.3, 5 and 12 volts) as shown on the label on the side of the power supply itself.  The fact that a component works in the ABIT board does not mean that it is not the problem in your board, so don't forget to list all components in reasonable detail (e.g., memory size brand specs, hd, cards).  Please confirm that you board is MSI #7025 too.  Good luck.
EDIT - We need to know your Bios version and whether you flashed, and if so, how and from and to what versions.
fixed.  All info should be in sig.  I have tried 2 different PSUs, my Powersream 520 and my Antec SL400 all to no avail.
I did flash my bios via booting off a floppy to the most recent beta bios, but it worked fine for a good while before eventually failing.
All the componants in the sig were working fine in the mobo, and my HTT was 305x9 Stable.  I was using a DDR Booster.
And im sorry, what do you mean by MSI #7025?

HI! i'm the one wih the raid problem on a k8n neo2....
That's what a i Did.. i unpacked the exe and copy the files in a floppy... question is: if i do that, windows instaler askme for some files that aren't in the .exe, anway it reconices the raid and everithing goes fine until the first BOOT on windos... it shows a blue screen, butremoves it so fast that i cant read it or pause the system. But i know it's a raid problem because if i install it on a ide disk it works.
The nforce3 drivers are almost a year old, and i'm not sure if nforce4 is compatible...
I think the're compatible because if you enter in msi driver download page and select my model, they put the Nforce3 and nforce4 for win64 and my model is only nforce3. The thing is they havent released the nforce3 for WIN 64.... So.. It's normal that win asks me for some files that ain't in the .zip file (i extracted the files o course) and Which driver should i put the Nvidia one year old nforce3 or the new nforce4. (the nforce3 for 32 bits is rejected by windows) or... i have to wait the new nforce3?
    thanks for helps

Now... don't LOL, but there is a reason I picked the 3200+ instead of the 3000+, but I can't remember why???
Probably because the 3000+ only has a 9x maximum multiplier, whereas the 3200+ will go to 10x.
2600MHz at 9x means a FSB of 289MHz and ram at 289MHz for best performance.  Will your ram do 289MHz?  Of course you *can* run your memory and fsb async, but I prefer not to.

Which SATA / Raid Driver did you install ? The ones from the nforce driver package provided by nvidia, or the original MSI driver ?
    Go here:

And download and install the SATA RAID Driver, make a backup of your Data first.

Well, I have seen this post and it makes me wonder what are the differences between nforce chipset driver packages and the MSI ones if any? Thanks in advance.

First off have you been using Driver Cleaner to get rid of all the old bits of drivers? if not go get it read the instructions and use it.  Re-start the driver process again.  The latest ones on the Nvidia site are probably a safe bet at the moment.  So clean your PC with that prog and install new drivers.
Then do as you say you have done and ensure 'FastWrites' are turned off.  This is most important.  Get 'Riva Tuner' and this will comfirm you have them turned off.  Also get the 'Coolbits' registry tweak.  Run this and it will add overclocking capability to your display properties.  You can adjust both 2D and 3D speeds.  Now what you must ensure is that they are both set at the same speed!  sometimes the 2D comes set lower than the 3D this can cause symptoms like you are having.  Set the 2D to the same speed as the 3D.
I have an XFX6800 Ultra  in my K8N Neo2 Plat and it works superbly so fingers crossed doing the above will sort it as they are the main probs with the 6800Ultra cards.

  • New K8N Neo2 Platinum, AMD 64 3500+ sytem freezing

I have posted to a couple of forums and still can't get this problem resolved, hope you guys can help.
I put together a new system last Friday night and spent all weekend trying to fix it. I ended up with 2 bad power supplies, one fresh from the store was dead, but got that resolved. Got the system up and running, got online, surfing and FREEZE..everything stopped.  Rebooted, 5 minutes later, same thing, over and over again.
Tried checking memory, it's fine, both sticks, power supply is fine, everything seems to be running fine except it keeps freezing after about 5 minutes.
I wonder if it's a bad board, so I tried to RMA it with the vendor and they want me to try outside the case to see if it won't freeze there, haven't had the time yet cause I'm working, will try that tonight.
Also, one guy on a different board suggested that I try a fresh install of windows xp as the old drivers might be interfering with the new drivers. I will try that tonight also.
If anyone can give me any other suggestions, I would appreciate it. If I can't get this resolved, I'm going to send back the board for a new one.
    Below are my specs:
    AMD 64 3500+
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo
    2 x 512 Kingston ddr400 (pc3200)
    antec true power 480
wd 120gb hd, wd 80gb hd
    cdrw generic, dvdrw generic
    bfg 6800 oc video card
    thanks

Thank you both for your posts, they are both informative and I will be using your information Friday night. I'm just so tired after work, I don't want to get part way into it and have to leave it for the next day, I have to get up at 3am everyday and get home around 6-7pm and I'm beat!
So, Friday after work, I'm going to start with just the basics and go from there, using all the information I've been getting from this board and a couple of others. Seems like the best thing to do is, start with barebones, reset cmos, reset battery and install fresh windows os.
I will post Friday after I start and hopfully I will get this problem  fixed.
    thanks again

  • Poor gaming performance K8N Neo2 Platinum

I recently installed a new video card - BFG 6800 Ultra and the fps during gaming has dropped drastically. I thought the problem might be the video card so I flashed it to a newer bios, this had no effect. Then I swapped in my old video card - 6800 GT and the problem still existed. I also tried turning off Fast Writes and there was no change. I had my CPU overclocked and tried setting everything to default values, but there was no change. I ran Sandra benchmarks and the CPU / Memory is performing as it should. I would like to figure out if the problem is with a bios setting or the motherboard itself. Here are some benchmarks:
