BI Publisher Enterprise vs BIP Desktop

Hello,
I have been using the desktop version (the plug-in for MS Word) of BIP exclusivley but now I'm trying to dabble in the BIP Enterprise app. I have my data source defined, I have my .rtf template uploaded, but I'm not sure how to incorporate my .xsl file. Using the plug-in for Word, I add an import statement to import the .xsl file, but it doesn't work when I try to use the same .rtf template in the Enterprise app. When I remove the import statement I get results in my report...otherwise I get a not-so-helpful error message ("The report cannot be rendered because of an error, please contact the administrator.).
I've tried using <?import:file:///D:\product\......\xhtml-to-xslfo.xsl?> and <xsl:import href="http://.../xhtml-to-xslfo.xsl" /> but neither work and I'm not sure if my problem lies in the import statement or my lack of knowledge in BIP Enterprise.
Thank you,
Tammy

Hi Pieter,
I'm afraid the white paper isn't telling me anything I didn't already know. I've tried to import via the http:// and file:/// route but I still get a generic error message - The report cannot be rendered because of an error, please contact the administrator. I have "Disable External References" set to False.
Here's what I'm doing...maybe you can see if I'm doing something wrong:
- After adding the import statement to my .rtf file, I edit my Report in BI Publisher Enterprise and upload the .rtf file under Layouts, Manage Template Files (I also added the .xsl file for S&Gs)
- Next I create a new Layout, selecting my .rtf file as the Template, then select the output formats.
- Then I click View and select my new Layout and whatever format (pdf preferrably)
- This is when I get the error message
Am I doing anything wrong? The only thing I can think of is maybe BIP isn't finding my .xsl file??
Thank you,
Tammy

  • Logon from BIP Desktop - username/password details shown in logfile

When user logs in to BIP Enterprise from BIP Desktop, the logon details are recorded in the logfile - this poses a security issue. Is there any way of preventing at least the password from being written to the logfile?

    Hi Tim,
    Sorry for my late answer.
Turning off loging is not possible for production. There will be too many requests from our internal users like "why didn't that work"...
Additionally to that - there is a big security issue if the BI Publisher Plugin connects to BI Publisher standalone server with HTTP. You probably should provide an HTTPS-Interface.
kind regards and have a nice weekend

  • BIP desktop vs BIP enterprise edition.

    Hi,
WHat is the difference between BIP Desktop and BIP Enterprise editon. I installed BIP Desktop first and coverted few Answers reports. I tried to sftp the report and was not successfull. I contacted oracle support and was informed that I need to install BIP Enterprise edition and apply a patch to the server version for the sftp to work. Now I have both desktop and enterprise edition installed on my machine. Now I am totally confused. I have few questions.
    1. In which case do we BIP Desktop and BIP enterprise edition.
    2. Will the microsoft word pugin work only for the desktop version?
    3. When I connect to BIP now I am not sure if I am connected to Desktop version or enterprise edition.
    4. When I run BIP from presentaion services I see that I am connected to the desktop version as I see few of my developed reports in there.
    5. After I installed BIP Enterprise edition I see the 'Start BI Publisher' and 'Stop BI Publisher' in the start menu. When I click on start BI Publisher I am connecting to BIP and in there I dont see any reports. SO I am assuming it is the enterprise edition version.
    6. If I want to ftp reports from enterprise edition version how do I do it.
Please help. I am totally confused with two versions installed. Thanks in advance.

BIP Desktop is for Report/ RTF template development and testing purpose. It is against the static data or if you have installed Enterprise, you can connect to live data as well. While enterprise is the complete product with all the functionality.

  • Crosstab Builder doesn't appear as an Insert option for BIP Desktop

According to entries in the Forums.oracle.com, the Crosstab Builder was rolled out in 10.1.3.2 (BI Publisher
Yet when the 10.1.3.4 BI Publisher desktop plugin is installed alone the BI Publisher > Insert > Crosstab functionality does not appear.
Are there any special requirements for making this functionality appear?
Note: Oracle Enterprise integrates BIP into the PeopleTools layer as "XMLPublisher". Users install the BIP Desktop tool alone without having BIP Enterprise installed on the same desktop. Could there be libraries installed with the Enterprise layer that are required to see the Crosstab Builder option in the menu?

In Global Support we are using BIP 10.1.3.4 Build 129 and DO see the Insert > Pivot table. The customer is using 10.1.3.3.2 and "Cross Tab" is in the menu.
Does this mean there was an internal product name change for the same functionality from "Cross Tab" to "Pivot Table" with the roll-out of 10.1.3.4? The Desktop Plugin 10.1.3.4 built-in Help has a whole section regarding "Cross Tab [Builder]" but nothing regarding "Pivot".
Can you help point to documentation for this feature? A check of 10.1.3.4 New Features, Release Notes, and Developer's documentation doesn't find any hits for "Pivot" or "Cross tab" and only one minor reference to both in the User Documentation under "Online Analyzer". Does this mean the feature is only available as part of the "Online Analyzer"?
I am trying to narrow this down so as to be able to help determine if Crosstab/Pivot is a feature supported by PeopleTools' integration of BIP.
    Thanks for your help.

  • BIP Desktop - windows security update issue

    Hi Wizards,
My PC has automatically installed Windows 7 security updates yesterday. As a result, the BI Publisher Add-In has disappeared from the ribbon in Word (it is fine in Excel though). A similar situation happened in August, where BIP did not work correctly due to another update.
I have already removed and re-installed BIP Desktop (11.1.1.5.0) with no success at the end.
I urgently need the fix, could someone point me to the right place in this forum or somewhere else, please?
    Thank you, Peter Subert

  • BIP Desktop Install Problem:  Run-time error '9' Subscript out of range

    Hi All,
I am trying to get my BIP Desktop to work. I have notice previous threads regarding the internet explorer security patches affecting BIP Desktop and my problem is similar. Here is my problem:
    1. I installed BIP Desktop 5.7.146.
    2. I start Template Builder for Word Language by selecting Start>Programs>Oracle BI Publisher Desktop.
    3. A dialog box prompts for UI Language and I select English
In the midst of the Template Builder for Word Language attempting to initiate/change the user interface language to English, it throws the following error:
Run-time error '9' Subscript out of range
Here are some details regarding my PC:
    XP sp2, MSXML6, jre1.5.0_15
Also, my CPU performance hits it maximum while I am doing this
Any thoughts on how to correct this?
    Thanks,

  • Compliance between BIP desktop version 10.1.3.3 and APIs version 10.1.3.2.0

    Hi guys!
We've built a solution that uses basic BIP APIs (RTFProcessor basically) and now are considering to migrate BIP desktop to version 10.1.3.3 since it could address some difficulties we have with previous version. The fact is that we've done heaps of tests using APIs in version 10.1.3.2.0 and would like to avoid regression tests that would be necessary if we migrate APIs to 10.1.3.3.
Question: can we built templates using 10.1.3.3 and keep APIs in version 10.1.3.2.0? What issues could we have doing so? e.g what unsupported features? would we miss only new features for 10.1.3.3?
Couldn't find any reference web site documentation.
    Many Thanks!

    Hi all,
Oups..., the answer is in Oracle BI Publisher documentation library
    Look at :
    "New features" http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10383_01/doc/bip.1013/e10416/toc.htm
    "Release Notes" http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10383_01/doc/bip.1013/e10410/toc.htm
There's also two patchs to install (if you encounter problems corrected by these patches)
    Patch 6499814 : http://blogs.oracle.com/xmlpublisher/2007/10/31
    Patch 6689777 : http://blogs.oracle.com/xmlpublisher/2007/12/17

  • Run time error '9' while installing BIP Desktop 10.1.3.4.1 for Windows

    Hi,
I've been getting 'run time error '9' Subscript out of range error while installing BIP Desktop.
I have MS Word 2003 and the laptop's OS is Windows XP SP3. I have searched the net and this forum for suggestions
and followed what was recommended (install .NET framework 2.0, make sure no MS Office processes are not running while
installing the software, Admin rights at Registry level on BI Publisher folder etc..) but no use.
This is a new laptop which I just received. On my existing laptop (which has similar configuration), I've installed BIP long time
ago and do not remember facing this error. If any one has come across this problem recently and was able to trouble shoot it,
please share with me how you were able to overcome the problem.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Srini

    Hello,
Since I haven't heard from any one, I have opened a service request with Oracle support.
Support recommended that I down load a desktop publisher from edelivery.oracle.com but even that didn't help.
    Will keep you posted.

  • BIP Desktop installation "java runtime environment not installed"

I keep getting the "java runtime environment not installed" error when I try to install BIP desktop.
I have JRE both as part of the BIP Enterprise Edition install and also because I installed (and reinstalled) SUN Java SDK.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I reinstalled JDK with the JRE. That seemed to do the trick.

  • Strange problem with bip desktop. 11.1.1.5

i have a couple of hundred reports made by bip desktop 10.1.3.4.
all reports that i have made is for bip emebedded for enterprise one (9,0).
they work as the should. but now the company upgraded to win7 and office 2010
so i had to upgrade to bip desktop 11.1.1.5.
and now if i download a reports thats made with the old tool. and i change something in it an upload it again the report stop to work.
heard from a partner company that they had the same problem.
it works if i make a complety NEW rtf template. but i cant make changes in the old ones.
anyone experinced this problem and got a soulution for this.
or do i have remake all my reports again with the new desktop tool ?
its very annoying problem. i got tons of changes that is needed to be done in old reports and i dont want to touch them if this will make em stop working
    //Magnus

We have the same problem -- many upgraded report that didn't successfully upgrade from 10.1.3.4.1 to 11.1.1.5. One problem now is that templates are now case-sensitive, and all the reports switched from lowercase to uppercase during the upgrade, so no output is produced.
There are many subtle changes in many of the underlying Java libraries. The handling of dates in both output and input paramters seems to change with every version of BIP. Also, report parameters specified as integers appear in the XML output as floating point numbers, so they now fail equality tests in XPath expressions in the templates.
If you have very intricate XSLT/Xpath code in your templates, I would worry about breaking them. Always save the original file before manipulating it in the Desktop add-in. Make one change at a time and test it, because you know debugging templates is not fun.

Click Layouts > New > enter Name ….. > Click Layouts > borrows .rtf file in Manage T file > Upload > Save > Click View
It is showing only the .rtf file without data. Why there is no data?
Please guide me to solve this issue.

  • BI Publisher Enterprise integration with 11.5.10.2

    Hi all!
We are currently trying to leverage the XML publisher of 11i for any new report requests we have so we are more in line with fusion when we get there, if ever! The question for the group is that we found it a little conveluted to create the data definition and were wondering if we could leverage the enterprise edition (we have licences) to actually do that and load them in the database... Anyone any idea/experience in doing so?
    Thanks,
    G

    Hi Paul,
Thanks for the reply on this post. The reason we are looking at BI publisher enterprise is that is seems to provide a better GUI for developers to design the data definition. Right now we have developers using Jdeveloper as an XML editor following the guidelines provided in the XML 5.6.3 user guide which per my developers comment is not as easy to use as Report builder which provides a lot of flexibility.
So our hope/goal now is to find a better way to develop the data definition or at least make it as efficient as possible. Am I missing something? Maybe there is already such functionality in XML that we are not familiar with...

  • XML Publisher Enterprise Installation

I installed Xml Publisher Enterprise version 5.6.2 to our test PC with its own oracle home as c:\ora_xmlp. The installation ran successfully. But when I ran xmlpserverstart.bat, it stopped at the line: "Oracle containers for J2EE log (10.1.3.0) initialized..." and didn't go on. Should I use the same path as oracle database or application server?
    Please help, Thanks.
    - Jessie

    Hi Jessie.
That's what it's supposed to do. That message means the OC4J engine started properly. Now you can access the application by going to:
    http://localhost:15101/xmlpserver
unless you changed anything in the install (which I'm assuming from the formulation of your note is nothing).
    Cheers,
    Dave
