BI strategy for the SME

Hi all,
First of all I live in Belgium so I cant preview any of this software:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/powerbi/default.aspx
Now most of my customers are SME in the fashion industry and we are going to develop a data warehouse platform where they connect to with a client application to view KPI's, scorecards and dashboards. Most of them have a SQL Server on site now here comes
the challenge.
1) We know how the data warehouse looks like, it will also be made in Sql Server. Now we want to put it in the Cloud so they will always have access to there data. Does it matter where we host it? In a datacenter or Azure?
2) What would be the best way to upload the local data to the warehouse? A VPN connection to the datacenter, webservices?
3) What would be the role of Power BI in this story? Will it only pass the data to the clients (ios app and Excel) so may I see it as a Client tool? or is there a possibility to create the warehouse in Power BI?
Thanks for the clarifications!

My experience with the power bi preview and the US only restriction is that it's limited to your email being a .com and selecting 'United States' as your country. So just register a .com domain for a few bucks from a registar that supports email forwarding
and you should be able to get your hands on it :)
re your questions
Can't really help with 1 or 2, but it depends on the size of your data and which option gives you the best throughput and i/o for your money, and whether you plan on using any of the other features that come with azure. I don't see how you could load anything
using webservices though unless your dataset is tiny.
although if i had to make a call, If you're going to be putting it in azure you'll need to use the heavy IO VMs and install sql server. I don't think azure sql can be used for any kind of data warehousing at the moment.. not enough optimisation features
and i don't think it supports backing up/restoring using .BAKs to on-premise and vice versa.
3. both, although the semantic models that are persisted inside PowerBI are limited (excel powerpivot only at the moment - it supports an api generated dataset and a model created in the powerbi designer, but these aren't as feature rich as the full
v2 powerpivot/bism model). The new powerbi preview supports on-premise tabular cubes according to the doco (haven't tested this yet, haven't been able to get the AD working) so it will work as a front end tool. I think it sends the dax direct to the cube
and then visualises the result.

  • [Best Practices] Which versioning strategy for the web applications?

    Hi all,
An important question when starting to develop a web application is how to correctly make the releases follow-up?
That involves to adopt a versioning strategy to definitely fix the version numbers which will be associated to each release.
The versioning strategy i have imagined is based on four different numbers with format like v.X.X.X.X:
       - The first one represents the version number of the database structure.
       - The second number is linked to the different finalized releases of the data model layer.
       - The third number concerns the different releases of the interfaces
       - And finally, the last number is the Subversion (or other code control system) last save. This strategy involves:
       - The subversion number is systematically reported
       - Changes on the database will affect both the data model layer and the interfaces; also, among the three first numbers only the first one will have to change.
       - Changes made on the data model level automatically involve a new interfaces release and will also be represented on the second number and not on the third.
       - Finally, bring some changes only on the interfaces level will affect the third and the fourth numbers only.My questions are:
       1) Is my choice correct?
       2) Maybe it already exists some versioning convention?
       3) What is your strategy?
       4) What is the strategy for the Jdeveloper versions?Best regards,
    Tif

I would like people to be able to watch it in a flash player embedded on my site (and have it look good even if they click on a full screen button) or download to their iPod.
Use the H.264 setting for iPod in Compressor. The h.264 file will play in a JW Flash Player and it's able to be downloaded for iPod viewing.

  • Oracle Strategy for the UIX & BC4J in the new JDeveloper version

What is Oracle Strategy for the UIX & BC4J in the new JDeveloper version:
    - Like DataBinding
    - BC4J Integration
    - UIX controller
    - Internationalization
    - Supporting for Palm, phone and pager.

    Hi,
Are these questions all BC4J specific?
General databinding info is discussed here:
What's the developement direction of UIX?
For BC4J/UIX integration, in 9.0.5 we will continue to support our existing api's, but you can also use uix as the view and bc4j as the model in adf, which is described here:
    http://otn.oracle.com/products/jdev/htdocs/905/sod_otn.html#adf
Aside from bug fixes, I don't think there are major changes in the controller/internationization. Did you have specific questions about the controller and internationalization?
We are planning to support Palm web browser 2.0, but due to the timing of the release of a platform that supports it and our own schedules, I don't think it will be officially supported in the 9.0.5 release. We won't have phone or pager support in 9.0.5.

  • Release strategy for quantity contract

    Hi Gurus,
In quantity contract ..  target value will not filled by the value(in header details) as it is quantityt contract.
We may have different line items with different cost..
my doubt is how the release strategy will be triggered for the quanityt contract and how the system will consider the whole value of the contract..
    please explain/clarify
    regards
    subbu

    Hi,
The release strategy for the contract will work in the exact mechanism as for the PO i.e. it will be determined  based upon the total net value of the entire purchasing document.
    Cheers,

  • Release strategy for Release POs

    Hi Every one,
    We have a requirement.
A contract is created and approved as per the regular strategy.
The releases (POs) are created against it and sent directly to the vendor.
As the Contract is already approved, standard SAP does not apply the release strategy for the POs created for the contract.
But the business wants the PO releases too to follow the release strategy.
Can you please look in to this and let me what changes we need to make this happen.
    Regards
    Pavan

As the Contract is already approved, standard SAP does not apply the release strategy for the POs created for the contract
This statement is not correct, it's upto you to use or Not to use Release Process for release Orders (PO) created w.r.to Contract.
As the table & fields are Common for both Contract & PO release ..you need to choose the PO relevant fields & values in the Release Strategy..
So that the Release Process is applicable to PO's created w.r.to Contract also..
For ex: if you use the field purchase Doc category as a Character  in  the Release , it differentiates whether it is PO or Contract..
So that you can define different Release Strategy for PO & Contract
Or  if you maintain the Doc type of PO in the Contract Release Strategy in CL20N / CL24N trxn code..
then the release strategy applies to PO also..

  • Patch strategy for ECC6 in SAP NW2004s environment

    Hi Experts,
Our SAPNW04s landscape consists of ECC6, BI 7.0, EP7.0 , SRM, XI, Solution Manager systems.  We are drafting patch upgrade strategy for the ECC6 system & have 2 options:
Option 1: Apply patches only in ECC6 & not in other components.
Option 2: Patch ECC6 together with other components like SRM, BI, EP etc.
Option 2 will make things complicated but for Option 1 below are the 2 concerns/questions raised:
    1. Option 1 will lead to doing UAT twice for Business Processes which have a tight integration with ECC6, for ex. UAT for data extraction needs to be done after applying patches both in the ECC6 & the BI systems. This will lead to arrange for more user resources.
    2. Due to the tight integration between ECC6 & other components applying patches alone in the ECC6 might lead to other systems like BI, EP,SRM, XI etc at a lower level & they might not be able to connect to ECC6 or work properly with ECC6.
Can somebody share how they are managing the ECC6 patches upgrade in a big NW2004s environment with other components present, are the ECC6 patches done standalone & other systems like EP, BI follow their own different time schedules for patching or ECC6, BI, EP are recommended to be done together.
Are there any best practices recommendations from SAP on the same?.  Can somebody share the blueprint or any strategy document they are using.
    Thanks,
    Abhishek

    Hi Abhishek,
For the reasons you outline in 2, it is recommended to patch entire business scenarios (i.e. business processess that are coupled integrated across systems) together.  Rather than go into a full discussin here, I recommend you see my paper [How To Design a SAP NetWeaver - Based System Landscape |https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/50a9952d-15cc-2a10-84a9-fd9184f35366].

  • Release Strategy for Condition Records

    Hi,
This is a requirement from my client. The client needs to give 4 levels of release strategy for the condition records created. The selling price for the products will be entered by person 1. This has to be approved by the sales execute (person 2); then by the sales manager (person 3); finally by the General Manager (Person 4). The selling price of the products ranges from 10 lakhs to 40 lakhs. so, the release strategy is needed. This type of release strategy is available in MM for PR and PO. Please let me know whether similar facility is available in SD. Any alternative is also solicited.
    Regards,
    K Bharathi

    Hi,
    Thanks for your valuable reply.
I defined 3 Processing status (Menu path: SPRO >> SD >> Basic Fn >> Pricing >> Define Processing status). They are EU-End user, KU-Key user, MD-Final authority. These processing statuses are assigned to Release status. First two processing status EU, KU were assigned to A (Blocked). The third processing status MD was assigned to Blank (Released). The purpose is: at processing status EU one person will upload the price master. Second person will check the price and will change the processing status to KU if he satisfies with the accuracy of the price master. The third person (final authority) will check the price and set the Processing status MD. Once the condition record gets the status MD, the prices can be used for creating sales order because it is released.
In the condition record for PR00, when I enterthe processing status  EU or KU the release status shows 'Blocked' release statuses. When I enter MD in the processing status, the release status show 'released'.
My question is how can assign the responsibilities of changing the processing statuses EU to KU, KU to MD to two different persons.

  • Release strategy for Invoice

    Dear All,
Can we have a Release strategy for the invoices ? Here my client wants to have approval for all the invoices irrespective of whether there is variation or not. They don't want to park & post option also.
    regds,
    CB

    Hi,
For Inovices there is no release strategy but you can use
If an invoice item containing a large amount is entered, it is advisable to initially block this invoice to check the amount, especially in the case of invoices that do not refer to a purchase order.
In Customizing for Logistics Invoice Verification, you can define:
Setting in Customizing for Logistics Invoice Verification
    If the invoiced amount should be checked then;
Invoice Block>>> Item Amount Check>>> Activate Item Amount Check
    The purchase orders in which the amount should be checked in invoice items, depending on the item category and goods receipt indicator of the order item. then;
Invoice Block >>> Item Amount Check >>> Set Item Amount Check
    The amount as of which an item should be blocked the ;
    Invoice Block >>>>Set Tolerance Limits.

  • Release strategy for GR?

    Hi,
My company has requirement that GR should be subject to approval process before it can be posted. As far as I know there is no standard functionality in SAP for this (at least in ECC, as in SRM there is one).
Has anyone encounter this before? And how you deal with this? I have tried to persuade the user to drop this, but the problem is they already have this functionality in their legacy (which is custom made web based application), so it is pretty hard to argue with them in this area.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Best regard

    Hi Yosea,
Yes you said is right that there is no Release strategy. And can't imagine the situation in the legacy as well for this approval process thru Release strategy while doing the GR. But there is another way of accepting the goods either partial or full using movement types, you can do so.
My question is why do you (i.e., your client or company) want to control (through the approval process) at Goods receipt level. That makes complex and un logical as well, thats why there is an approval process comes into picture at PO (Purchase order is an external purchase document and is going out to an external party /vendor /supplier) against that they can supply the material /provide the services to the Organization/company and is required to control before issuing this perticular document called PO (i.e., work order and is required to be controlled thru Electronic release strategy in SAP) instead of manual before in legacy since there is money matter involved and needs to control over investment on Inventory /services purchases.
But where as GR, this is an incoming document, what the meaning in controlling it through approval process. That is the way you have to conveincene the client or company.
Ok fine. If still they want this functionality to be implemented (that is to controlling at the GR level for the goods coming in. Then there is another way to control it through receiving the stocks into different stock types using the respective movement types, but not through Release strategy such as Blocking (GR blocking), Quality stock (for checking the quanlity standards thru Quality Inspection) and then later you can move these stocks to Unrestricted use stock, so that this can be allowed to use further.
I dont think there is a functionality in the SRM as well. As I know that you can receive the Goods in SRM through Online Desktop confirmation that too partial or full quantity, that is nothing accepting/approval for the Partial or full quantity that is received against the PO which is created wrto to respective Shopping cart. And that is how you can control the goods that are coming inside / received at Stores/WH inorder to maintain the good quality of Inventory.
Note: Controll always suggested at the time of making agreement  (i.e., Release strategy for the PO) but not at the time of receiving the goods. Here while receiving the goods only thing that a Stores person can see tmainly is needs to check for the Quantity, Quality of the goods that are ordered, Delivery time, Mode of transport, Shipping instructions, etc. This will help them further in evaluating the vendor.
Hence there is no logic is going for that option
    Hope it clarifies,
    Regards,
    Sapsrin

  • Release strategy reversal for the purchase requisition.

    Hi all,
I have a scenario were we have three release levels to release the PR through ME54N tcode.
After all the levels are released,If at the first level the PR release is cancelled all other levels are automatically cancelled.
Now my concern is until the 3rd release cancellation is done, 2nd and 1st level should not be allowed to cancel the release of PR. and until 3rd & 2nd release cancelltion is done, 1st level should not be allowed to cancell the release of PR.
Please Let me know if any BADI or any enhancement is available to acheive this back release strategy for PR.

  • Reset Release Strategy for any change in the Purchase Order

    Hi,
Is it possible in SAP standards to reset release strategy for even minor changes in the Purchase Order irrespective of whether it is value change or any change in the text or Purchasing group change or whatever it is?
If so, where do we need to make the configurations.
I have seen in some thread about resetting the release strategy for decrease in Purchase Order value.Even that was possible through some BAPI.
    Thanks in Advance.

    hi sandesh,
sorry, i know it's too late.
i tried your suggestion, it works blocking the purchase order after release strategies are setted.

  • What is a good strategy for keeping the OEM GRID up and running?

    Hi,
What is a good strategy for keeping OEM GRID up and running? Currently, we have grid installed on one linux64bit box with 4 cpus and 8 gigs of RAM, oms 10204, repdb 10204, agent 10204. In addition to using this oem grid for notifications and performance monitring, we are also using this oem grid for scheduling over 700 jobs running over 30 targets.
What is a good strategy to have to backup the grid so that when this box goes down, we can restore and then recover the grid? Please lead to white papers or documentations. Thank you.

  • Release Strategy for Credit Note un the QM Module

    Good SAP Guru's,
I have a very important question for you:
Is it possible within in the QM module (Transaction QM12) to implement a Release Strategy based on the value of the credit note to be created.
This should work on the same lines as the Purchase Order Release strategy.
Any guide lines and/or assistance will be gratefully appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Leslie

    Dear Leslie
We had done a similar kind of development in notification, not for credit memo though , but certainly can be incorporated in this case.We had done this for approving Short shipment and devaitions. If there has to be short shipment to be sent to a customer  a notification will be trigered to manager and if he approves it will go for higher approval.
Please find my suggestion for this development
    1) Make 3 task codes. for eg Task 1 for  credit note is for less than u20AC500.00 . Task 2one for more than 501 and Task 3other one for more than 2001.
    2) According the need of the credit notes to be created let the user assign the task and release it.
    3) For task no 2 and task No3 a workflow triggers to the corresponding roles Sales manager & General Manager. ( please note that notifications are workflow freindly and standard workflows are available for the same)
    4) if Manager wants to approve he can make the Task Complete. ( Notification tasks have 4 stages, outstanding, release, complete, Succussful)
    5) Based on the status of the task you can make use of the action box in notification for creating the credit memo.
    6) The credit memo creation will have to be  developed. You will have to get ABAP support for this. They can either do it through user exit, or call transaction , and incorporate the same in the Action box of notification. (QQMA0001: User Subscreen for Notification Header, QQMA0014 Checks before saving notification )
please let me know your apprehensions

  • What is the backup strategy for your rpool?

    Hi all,
May I know what is your backup strategy for rpool? like how to integrate with the netbackup or any other backup software
Is it using zfs send a data stream to a file and backup that file using backup software??
Aside the above method, can we also use the UFS method?
backup software to backup entire / /var..........  etc....
         1. re install the OS
         2. install the backup client
         3. create a zpool (rpool-restore)  using a 2nd disk,
         4. mount the new zpool  (rpool-restore) to /restore
         5. restore all the file in  /restore
         6. install boot blk,
         7. boot from 2nd disk
    Any more idea?

    HI Willy,
According to the Flash Archives limitation stated in Oracle website, if the OS is with a child zone, it will not work right?
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19253-01/821-0436/6nlg6fi8u/index.html
I am thinking that using the traditional way to do it.
Use a backup software, for example, networker, TSM, netbackup.. to back up the following:
    /rpool
    /export/
    /export/home
         1. re install the OS
         2. install the backup client
         3. create a zpool (rpool-restore)  using a 2nd disk,
         4. mount the new zpool  (rpool-restore) to /restore
         5. restore all the file in  /restore
         6. install boot blk,
         7. boot from 2nd disk
    will it still works?

We have some options like a single centralized SLD or a local SLD or something between them, e.g. an SLD for dev systems, etc.
Could you share your opinion -- what is a good SLD strategy for CE? Thanks!

    Hi,
It  wud depend on the landscape u have and requirement stategy.............
If you have a productive version...............obviously centralised SLD wud be preferred.....
Either case......juz to touch-base features of CE 7.1 i.e for exploration and R&D purpose..........lacal SLD and developer edition wud do.......
