BIA for Cognos Front-end
Hi,
We are in the process of migrating BW front-end tool as Cognos. Is anyone know if we implement BIA, Cognos will use it and get better result?
Thanks for your reply.
Regards
Ramesh
Hello Ramesh,
Cognos (as well as any other 3rd party front-end) will benefit from BIA. How much faster your queries will be depends on how much time is spent on the data selection. The higher the time now, the faster these queries will be with BIA.

High availability for Web front END server
Dear All
I am unable to understand the high availability model for Web front end server
I am currently working on MOSS 2007/IIS 7 but I think for all versions it will remain the same
I am now running single WFE server and my installation mode allow for adding extra servers to the Farm
now when I add Extra server what will happen next ? should I add extra web application and site collections ? will load balancing include lists, library items and workflows
how this stuff will be stored on one database
it's too vague to me so extra explanation will be appreciated
RegardsTo get a fault tolerant environment you need to do two things.
1) Add a second server that is running the the Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Service. That's the service that responds to calls for the web site making the server a WFE.
2) Implement some form of load balancing to distribute HTTP requests for SharePoint web sites to the two servers. This can be done with something as simple as Windows Network Load Balancing or with dedicated hardware like an F5 Load balancer.
Once you've added a load balancer and a second server you don't need to do anything else.

Solutions - Seeking input for web front end to storage
I am being bound by business process and privacy issues, and we want to keep our storage in house.
At the same time, all our users see and love drop box and google drive. So how can we, in our own private cloud, setup a web front end to our exisitng storage. Is there some MS product that will already do this? Points to consider,
will it integrate with DFS? SSL? Still be able to map drives directly from in office locations. Encryption (far back seat) options would be awesome. An MS product would be prefered, but are there other solutions??
Am I over thinking this? can I just setup a web server, and maybe code something in house?
BlankMonkeyHi,
If you need an application works like Google drive or Dropbox, it seems that OneDrive for Business and/or SharePoint online could help:
OneDrive for Business
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint-server-help/what-is-onedrive-for-business-HA102822076.aspx
OneDrive for Business seems more close to your requirement if you just need a place for storing data on private cloud.
SharePoint Online

Can we have Cognos front end connect to OBIEE repository
How Can we have OBIEE repository be taken as Input in Cognos Framework?
Any suggestions?Hi,
If your using Cognos version like MDX/XMLA then it should be possible. (on older cognos version you migth have to "reroute" trought an SSAS service.
http://www.biblogs.com/2007/11/26/essbase-integration-with-obiee-101331/
OBIEE with Essbase as datasource-what I need to know
Just fyi...
You can't connect directly to the Cognos cube, you have to go trough the Cognos Reporting server:
OBIEE -> Cognos Reporting Server - > Cognos Cube
or
OBIEE -> MS - SSAS server - > Cognos Reporting Server -> Cognos Cube
But if you are already on Cognos why do you want to transfer data to OBIEE? Cognos is NOT an ETL tool. A Cognos Cube File is only a data file for a Cognos Reporting server.
Thanks

Hi,
I've attended an interview on SQL and PL/SQL yesterday. Being a fresher I prepared only basic concepts. But I was posted a question regarding output for the front end application. The question is
"I'm having an exception in a function from a package. Now I can get that in backend using dbms_output.put_line. Tell me how the front end guy will come to know about the error/exception"
Please answer me>
"I'm having an exception in a function from a package. Now I can get that in backend using dbms_output.put_line. Tell me how the front end guy will come to know about the error/exception"
>
Your question isn't clear.
You can't get the exception in the back end using dbms_output unless you have an exception handler in the function. Then you can use dbms_output to capture the error code and message and use put_line to write it to a buffer.
It is up to the code calling the function to request the text from the buffer.
If you asking how a tool like sql*plus can get the dbms_output text then use SET SERVEROUTPUT ON and when the package function completes all DBMS_OUTPUT text will display. -
Can we Report BW Cube using Cognos Fornt End tools
Hello, Experts.
We need some inputs on how to Report BW cubes using COGNOS front end tools.
is this possible?
do we need to develop new cubes out in cognos again for making reports?
and in BW cube some attributes of material are not navigational if we go to cognos can we use this attributs for drill down or filtering?
Thanks in Advance.
Bharath.i am currently working on bi 7 with cognos 8.2 and go live very soon
- best approach is to use query as datasource for cognos (cognos consultants agree)
.......without query as datasource, cognos cannot see any reusable objects.
- If i recall, cognos can leverage attributes as navigational even if bw does not have them set that way.
- one downside is that you need to make sure all your rkf descriptions are locked down 100% because cognos uses the description in their xml definitions.
- Make sure you have an experience cognos framework modeler that knows ins and out and does not use simple wizards. same happened to us and lots of settings occured very late and slowed project.
reach out to me via my profile and i can give you pointers. -
<B>hello

<BR>
i have a simple question .as all of us when make a small application that is accessible over the web has two parts(always).one is for all users of this site and other only for administators.
front end accessible over the web is jsp page(in my application).my question is ,is it more appropriate to design the front end for adminstrators using java components.like by using javax.swing package or it must be the jsp page in which beans are used or applet. i have a confusion in the usablity of these as i want to design interface for admin usind swing components.
which approach is better and why ?plz expalin ur answer also. waiting for reply inorder to design my application. thanX.I would choose jsp/servlets with login protection for admins only. I would choose that, because I like to program, but like to do things fast. With applets or stand alone java applications, I would have to code the client server communication and still have to code some login protection. Also you are less likely to run into firewall problems when you just use port 80 and http like the users do.

Lync Server Front End 2 Hardware Load Balancer IP
I currently have the following Setup.
I only have 1 Hardware Load Balanced IP for my Front End Pool.
After running the Lync Planning Tool it actually states that i need 2 Hardware Load Balanced IP, 1 for internal and 1 for external.
My question would be would i be able to configure for mobility and external access with just using 1 Hardware Load Balanced IP?
Because i seem to have problem with connecting to the front end server based on the following scenario.
Without Reverse Proxy Mapping (port 80/443 internet to port 80/443 reverse proxy to port 80/443 lyncpool frontend)
Internal Access (No Issue)
Lync Mobile 2013 App (Can Connect and chat but intermittent connection) *gets disconnected if i access video/audio
Lync Client 2013 Externally (Cannot Connect to Server)
https://meet.domain.com (working)
With Reverse Proxy Mapping (Port 80/443 internet to port 8080/4443 reverse proxy to port 8080/4443 lyncpool frontend)
Internal Access (No Issue)
Lync Mobile 2013 App (Cannot connect)
Lync Client 2013 Externally (Cannot connect)
https://meet.domain.com (Not working)
Would i actually need to have a additional front end pool IP for external access? or can i maintain it as it is?
I do not understand why without the mapping it can work whereas if i do the mapping according to technet article it won't work.
Everything is running windows server 2012 R2 and Lync 2013, Loadbalancer / Reverse Proxy is the same F5 Appliance
Any assistance on this is greatly appreciated.Hi Greg,
I have been making use of it (https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com/) to test my autodiscover and remote
access.
Like i mentioned it is weird that without doing port mapping from 80/443 to 8080/4443 i was able to pass
the autodiscovery and all but once i changed to the proper steps to do port mapping it stopped working.
and im not using TMG but using a F5 Hardware Reverse Proxy which also happen to be my Load Balancing Appliance.
Is there anyone who can help give me more details if i need 2 VIP for the front end ? -
Lync 2013 Enterprise load balancing on the front end and edge pool
Hi,
I am setting up a Lync 2013 Enterprise deployment consisting of a Front End pool (x2 FE servers) and an Edge pool (x2 Edge servers). I'm seeing some conflicting advice regarding load balancing using hardware or DNS for the front end and the edge.
On the front end I have 2 internal DNS records 'lyncfepool1.contoso.local' each of which map to one of the IPs of the FE servers. I've used my details to populate the Detailed Design Planner excel spreadsheet and am told that I require a HLB to load
balance my front end pool. I'm aware of the need to load balance HTTPS traffic internally (which will be done by TMG) however other traffic to the front end (SIP, etc) can be balanced by DNS only, and not require a HLB?
Can someone clarify the front end requirement?
Also - looking now at the edge pool - this site again have two edge servers in a pool. We are using a total of six private IP addresses, two per edge service (2 x av.contoso.com, 2 x sip.contoso.com and 2 x webcon.contoso.com). These will be
NAT'ed by the external firewall and directed to the respective external (DMZ) IP addresses on the Edge servers on port 443. I know this isn't true roundrobin due to the intelligence of the Lync client when connecting (in that the Lync client will connect
to one of the public IPs and if it can't connect, it will know to connect to the other service IP), however I want to clarify this set up, particularly the need to direct the external public IP traffic at the DMZ Edge IP specified in the topology builder.
I've attached a basic diagram of the external/DMZ/Edge side which hopefully helps with this question
Persevere, Persevere, Per..That is because you will always need HLB for a front-end server since it hosts the Lync webservices which use HTTP/HTTPS traffic.
The description on the calculation tool also describes this correctly:
Supports Standard and Enterprise pools (up to 12 nodes), with pure device-based load balancing or a combination of DNS load balancing and device-based load balancing (for
Lync web services)
You can use either Hardware or DNS loadbalancing for SIP traffic only, but you will always need a HLB for the webservices. Both are applicable for the Front-End so you have either
full HLB for both SIP and HTTP(S) traffic
DNS LB for SIP traffic and HLB for HTTP(S) traffic
Hope this is more clear :-)

2 Front-end vs 3 Front-end server
Hi everyone,
Our front-end pool will consist of 2 front-end servers for high availability. One front-end server should support 10,000 users, but since the recommendation for a front-end pool is 3 servers, i want to know if deploying only 2 could be a real issue. What
I understand from the Technet documentation is that the way user data is stored (1 primary copy and 2 backup copies) is one reason (but I would thing not enough reason for us as a company of 1200 users) and that you need to shutdown and bring them up again
in a specific order. Am I missing something what would definitely make me deploy 3 front-end servers?I'd say just never do two front end servers, it's not recommended at all.
Check out these links to learn more and see some experiences:

Per TechNet "If you do not want to deploy three Enterprise Edition Front End Servers and want high availability and disaster recovery, we recommend you use Lync Server Standard Edition and create two pools with a paired backup relationship. This
will provide the best high availability and disaster recovery solution with only two servers."

SWC Unified Communications -
My challenge at the moment is that I need to create a dynamic filter. To explain this is a cascading filter but not your normal cascading filter,
ie, Year/Month/day etc.
Here we have a single Dimension, Organisation. It contains every level of a business,
Site,
Dept,
Company name,
Division
Holding
Strategic Area
From these as a default we have 4 built hierarchies with a different combination of the above.
Activity (Strategic Area, Dept)
Organisation (company Name, site, Dept)
Sites (Division, Site)
Holdings(Holding, Strategic Area, site, Dept)
At any given time we have have additional Hierarchies created within the Dimension, further adding to the hierarchy list.
We now have a challenge where we require our users to be able to in the first filter select the Hierarchy they want to use, ie, Holdings, Site, Organisation
or Activity. This should then cascade to the second filter and contain the relevant hierarchy and levels as a multi select filter. Of course this also needs to be connected to number of graphs, charts and scorecards on the page, dynamically.
I have gone around the houses to get this to work but not having any luck. Tried the variety of filters available, MDX, member selection, tabular,
SharePoint, and attempted to mix and match to get this to work. I cannot find a way but I don't believe this is not possible.
If it is not possible we must look around for another front end solution for our BI Dashboards which I would prefer to avoid. Any response or suggestion
would be much appreciated.
Regards,
ShebThis is possible within PerformancePoint 2010. Filters can be cascading. There is one restriction that might affect you, and that is the cascade only works on the preceding level. For example, let's say you have 4 filters, Country, County, City, postcode,
that have been set up in PerformancePoint as cascading filters. Now when you choose a country, say United Kingdom, only Counties within the UK will be displayed. That's exactly as you could expect. However, now if you select Norfolk county, all the cities
with "Norfolk" county will be available. That's including the cities within "Norfolk" Massachusetts. This is because PerformancePoint cascading filters only work between two levels.
Here's a link to setting up cascading filters http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh272541(v=office.15).aspx
Hope that information is useful to you and the cascade limitation doesn't limit you too much.

Hi,
Assuming below setup for Enterprise edition Lync 2013
Single Pool Stretched architecture with 4 FES servers
Site A Data Center
Site B Data Center
FES
2
2
SQL
1 Primary
1 Mirror
Fact: In a situation when we lose network connectivity to Site A DC, and due to less than 50% FES servers, Quorum will be lost and as a result Front End Service will stop after 5 minutes.
The question is, would I be able to do a manual intervention by using this command
Reset-CsPoolRegistrarState –PoolFqdn <pool name fqdn> –ResetType QuorumLossRecovery , and start FES with just 2 FES servers in Site B DC and 1 SQL
Server?
The reason I am asking this question is because it is mentioned in one of the Lync manuals that at least 85% of the servers must be available to recover once the Quorum has lost. The same manual also mentions to use above
mentioned command in order to recover from Quorum Loss despite the fact that the lost FES servers are still not available.
Thanks in AdvanceHi,
In Lync server 2013 Stretched pools are not supported for the Front End, Edge, Mediation, and Director server roles. It need two Lync pools.
If one pool fail to connect, An administrator can declare an emergency and fail over the pool to the backup pool. That is done by using the:
Invoke-CsPoolFailover –PoolFQDN <Pool fqdn> –DisasterMode –Verbose
