Biege G3 Minitower + OS 9--- Sleep Question!

Hello Everyone,
I have a beige G3 running 9.2.2 and it asks for a password at startup, but not from sleep. I want to know if it is possible to required a password to wake it from sleep like in OS X???
Thanks
Jer

Oh outstanding JerBear!
I honestly don't know if MaxScreenSaver runs in
classic - I don't think it does. Let me check, since
I'm running that right now...
<checks classic>
Oooo! It apparently does run under classic..
Teehee-hee!
I did not realize this.
I think it's not conflicting with the OS X, since it
does not install a control panel into the OS 9 System
folder. As far as any program that loads a control
panel, Panther is tetchy about what it will and will
not let run. I have a copy of AfterDark Deluxe that I
haven't been able to run since I upgraded from OS
8.6, and that was due to some sort of compression
scheme that the modules had that was broken with OS
9. Boo-hiss! There is some sort of workaround, I'll
see if I can holmes it out, if you want.
No I don't use Afterdark so there's no need.
There used to be an abandonware site for classic apps
that had the full compliment of AfterDark modules
- Gaah!- the MaxScreenSaver just went on - let me
turn this thing off - yeah, it works..
- back to the modules,, oh yeah.. They had all of
them, the Simpsons, StarTrek, the lot. I have the
.sit files somewhere still. I should check if the
modules will run on DarkSide of the Mac. Hmm.
If you play with OS 9 lots still and are looking for
any code, let me know. I got tons of classic stuff -
data hound that I am.
Actually, I use my beige G3 exclusively for PageMaker and Photoshop.
I'm teaching myself how to design web pages.
Deb.

  • Turning imac display off without putting it to sleep questions?

I like to leave my iMac on overnight but I don't want to put it to sleep COMPLETELY. Just to turn off the display. I heard you press control-shift-eject or do a hot spot on screensaver on system pref. But my question is, would it hurt the iMac in the long run for leaving it on overnight so much or it's made to last like that?
I talked to an apple specialist at the local apple store and he said these aluminum imacs are made to last even if you keep them on overnight? But would it overheat over the years? or I shouldn't worry so much. Sorry this is my first iMac. I have so many questions about it.

So it will not overheat no matter what?
If you are playing some 3D action game, or having the computer encode video for one hour straight, it may start to heat up. But then, the fans should kick up to a faster speed (you'll actually hear them), to keep the temp within the acceptable range. If the iMac is just sitting there, waiting for you to do something, it will not overheat. Now... If there is dust blocking airflow, or the Mac has some hardware issue that prevents the fans from running properly, then it is possible for a Mac to overheat, which may cause it to shut down unexpectedly or give you something called a +kernel panic+ (which is basically a system-level crash).
When a computer is running, for most users, it spends most of its time waiting for you to do something. If you are doing something simple like writing an email or web browsing, 90% of the time, it is waiting for you to do the next thing. If you have it doing something like ripping a music CD, during that time, it is working hard to finish as quickly as possible. But since most people do not rip CDs all day, most of the time, the Mac is coasting along, not working very hard. So, there is not much stress on the hardware most of the time it is turned on.
But if you shut down every night and start up every morning, one stressful time for the hardware is at startup. This is because all the components, such as the hard drive spinning up, display turning on, and the rest of the Mac are being powered up, happens at the same time. Waking from sleep is a similar process, and although it is not as bad as a full startup, it may happen much more frequently if the user is sleeping the Mac and waking it up frequently. That's why I suggested using sleep at the end of the day, to save power compared to keeping it ON, but once you have the Mac running at the start of the day, don't have it sleeping and waking numerous times throughout the day; just let it run until you are done for the day, then use sleep until the next day.

  • ICal and sleep question

if you have an iCal event that launches a script which will restart the computer at scheduled times, does that work if the computer is in sleep mode? or do you first need to wake up the computer with the option in the "energy save pref"?

    Question withdrawn.

  • Simple task, sleep() question

I have a normal Cocoa application with an NSImageView and a button below it. When the button is clicked, I want to change the image that is shown, leave it changed for 1 second, and then switch it back to the original image. I can't seem to get this to happen. I got the code working where each click of the button would toggle the image, but getting it to toggle and then toggle back doesn't seem to work. The code in the click event handler looks like this:
    [imageField setImage:image2];
    sleep(1);
    [imageField setImage:image1];
When the button is clicked, the image stays the same throughout, but it does seem that the app is sleeping, because the button stays highlighted for 1 second and prevents me from clicking it again. The image is originally set to image1 so I would expect image 2 to flash for one second and then get set back to image2.
Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

It worked perfectly. I had a bit of trouble getting NSTimer to work, I was confused about the arguments and syntax. But I found some example code and it ended up working.
I do have another question regarding NSTImer (if it doesn't get picked up here I'll post a new thread). It looks like I can provide a target (say the instance of the ImageView) and a message (method, for this example setImage), but there's no way to pass additional parameters (like the image to pass to setImage). Of course I worked around this by making a new method in my class and just calling that, and that will of course pass the correct arguments to setImage, but it seems pretty limited to not allow passing arguments to existing messages. Am I missing something?
I see userInfo but that is just another instance I can pass along, not really more arguments. For example:
    [NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:1
    target:imageView
    selector:@selector(setImage:)
    userInfo:nil
    repeats:NO];
I would like to pass a variable to imageView setImage using the timer. Is this possible?

  • Another crash when trying to wake from sleep question ?

I've been reading the other topics about the sleep crash but my problem is slightly different.
Here's the situation when the crash has occurred twice:
I get home from work and start up the computer (It’s at the log-in screen). I walk off
Make a drink use the head whatever and come back to a black screen and the sleep light doing its thing. I hit the space bar to wake the computer the screen stays black and the fans come on high speed. I have to do a hard shut down to stop it. When I restart and log in everything is fine. When it sleeps while I’m logged in it wakes normally. So my problem (not sure if its really a problem) is if I let the computer go to sleep from the login screen is crashes. Anything I should do besides not letting it sleep from the login screen? Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, from what you describe, it is a problem.
No problems with "sleep mode" on this end. Are you experiencing any other oddities with your system besides waking from sleep?
    Possible problem areas:
Simple things first - in your User Library/Preferences, move com.apple.loginwindow.plist to your desktop. Log-out, log-in, log-out and try sleep. If it crashes again, see below.
directory corruption - have you verified the condition of your Hard Disk using Disk Utility? (you can do this without having to boot your Installer DVD). Just go to Disk Utility, select your Hard Drive, go to the First Aid panel, and select "verify disk". If there is a problem, you'll need to boot the Installer DVD, select Disk Utility from the Installer menu and run the same test as above, except this time select "repair disk". Keep running the repair until you get a clean run.
Hardware: Sometimes hardware problems can create operational problems. My hunch is this is not what's at play here, however, never hurts to check.
From your Installer DVD you can run Apple's Hardware Test. Boot the DVD holding down the option key. Release the option key when Icons start to appear. Eventually, you'll see the Hardware Test icon. Click on it, then click Next. A panel will appear explaining the Test. Select the "quick test" first. It will probably take about 10 - 20 minutes. Post back if it shows any problem with hardware, including RAM chips.

  • Monitor sleep question

I've just moved to a G5 from my G3. Temporarily I'm using the Sony trini tube from my G3 until I get an LCD.
With the G3, the trini passed thru and was powered by the G3. Sleep ran fine.
With the G5 (dualie 2G) it sleeps OK, but it is very slow to wake, like 30 secs. Any ideas? Will I face this same problem with an LCS?

bought an LCD. instant sleep or wake. guess the trini is getting weak.

  • Firewire drive connected & sleep question

I have an external firewire drive on my eMac. I hardly ever shut the eMac down and the drive is not powered through the computer. Do drives of this type eventually spin down after a while of non-activity, or is the thing always spinning and running if it is on - even when not being used? if so, is it best that I only turn it on when I want to use it, and if that is not at computer boot up is that a problem. I have the drive to do iMovie and iDVD stuff, which is not an everyday occurrence.
    thanks

My LaCie drive will "spin down" after a short while of not being used. I keep it unplugged when I don't need it. But it does not seem to be a problem to leave the drive connected 24-7 which I have done from time to time...everything works fine...computer sleeps...

  • Auto-update waking computer from sleep question.

Will the computer awake from sleep at the prompting of auto-update?
    Thank you.

    Hi, and welcome!
I very much doubt that the computer would wake from sleep. If my understanding is correct, the auto-update feature works by just checking every now and then if there are any updates available. It cannot perform this check while it is sleeping.
So, I think I can safely say that the answer is: no.

  • Sleep Question

    Hi all,
I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Lion a few days ago (still trying to get used to it, but I’m liking it). Anyway, one thing that keeps happening which does concern me a little is that the time that it takes my computer to sleep has increased quite a bit.
When I was running Snow Leopard my laptop would go to sleep in about 20-30 seconds, but now with Lion it takes well over 3 minutes. I haven’t timed it exactly, but I know that when I close the display and walk away for a few minutes then come back I can still hear the HD making noise and the sleep light is not pulsing.
So I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this problem or if it's just me.
Thank you in advance to anyone who answers.
    Cheers to all

Sonicray said "Lion stores a lot more stuff than other OSX versions".
tjk indicated what to turn off and uninstall.
micro85 asked about more ram installed.
I agree with all, but I also advise you to set hibernatemode to 0:
going to sleep in the default hibernatemode (3) means that all ram is written to your harddisk ("sleepimage" file which has the size of your ram). this is not necessary (only when you want to switch batteries in sleepmode).
There are several ways to turn sleepimage off:
    in Terminal type
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
    sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage
and then restart: now when going to sleep, you don't have to write a 4GB file, and you save 4GB on the hdd, by having removed the sleepimage file.
There is a "smartsleep" app in Appstore, but I am not sure it works well in Lion, this app can set sleepimage off or on.

  • Another sleep question

I have an imac 21.5" display with the i5 core and mountain lion operating system.  I just noticed when I put the computer to sleep either through the power button or the menu button, the moniter turns off but I can hear the harddirve still spining.  Is this normal for sleep mode?  Thanks

Klaus1, thank you I checked it and it and the settings were fine.  I guess I should have done some more research into it, but the main culprit was........I had a document left in my printer que and it would not fully shut down.  I love apple products, but this is rediculous.  Oh well, I learned something new.  Thanks again for your speedy response

  • Apple TV start up/wake from sleep question.

    Hi all,
I've scanned the forums but didn't see a similar question, so here goes. I've had my aTV since last week, and overall think it's great. Operationally, though, is it normal to have to choose the TV resolution every time I go to use it after long periods (8 to 12 hours or so) of inactivity? I would think this would be some sort of info that would be automatically saved.
    Thanks,
    Brian H.

Boottime didn't seem long, or at least not long enough to where I noticed it. It's just that when I turned my TV on, and switched to the HDMI input, the Apple logo came up on the screen for a few seconds, then went to the list of possible resolutions. After picking the correct resolution (720p), it went through the intro video and then to then normal starting list of TV shows, movies, etc. All of my other settings remained what they were.

  • Manual Sleep question

I noticed that when I select sleep from the apple menu - it takes 10-15 seconds to do so - and sometimes 3-4 seconds. I do hear the computer "working" during this time - so maybe it's shutting things down...??? My iMac G5 did it immediately however, my new iMac aluminum seems to respond quite differently to this function - does this seem normal? or is it a cause for concern? Probably not, but I'm slightly paranoid about this kind of stuff. Any ideas?

It doesn't sound like anything to worry about to me but if you want to double check everything we can do that. I'll need to know some more details about your system though like which iMac you have, how much RAM etc.. and maybe you can narrow down the times when it takes longer to sleep as opposed to when it sleeps faster. One thing you can try is to restart your computer and try putting it to sleep right after a fresh boot.
Another thing you can try is resetting the SMC: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446

  • Quick Sleep Question

I would just like some information because I'm not sure if there may be something wrong as I am still new to Apple.
I am sorry to keep comparing to my PB G4 but its been my only other Mac. When calibrating it I would use it until it shut off....it never went to sleep, it just shut off.
With my MBP when the battery gets very low to exhaustion it goes into sleep and doesn't wake up and then sometime afterwards its shuts itself off. Is this ok? I have tried to wake it up so I can just shut it down, but to no avail. I know that the options are to either shut it off or let it sleep for 5+ hours, but I just want to know if everyone usually shuts it off at like 2-3% or does yours also go into this non-waking sleep at exhaustion?

I'm not too worried about losing information because by the time I reach the warning I have saved my info.
My main worry is that it goes into sleep and then it shuts itself off, where with my PB it would automatically shut off( no sleep 1st) and according to Apple it's supposed to go to sleep for 5+ hours.
Am I confusing that "automatic sleep after exhaustion" with "manually putting it to sleep after the warning for 5+ hours"?
I second you on the calibration being a pain, but I do see much better results afterwards.

  • "Sleep" question on Lion

I have the EnergySaver on my iMac set to 10 minutes.  I am running a Home Automation pgm and when I look at the Log from the HA pgm it shows it is sending and receiving commands all through the night.  I have 16GB of RAM.  Could all of this be happening because of the large amount of RAM?  I am not complaining but just trying to understand how the Sleep function is working.
    Thanks
    Andy

    Thanks Frank
Which has presidence, the computer sleep mode or a program that wants to send out a command?
I don't understand how my Mac is able to receive input and process it if it is sleeping.  Mine does this and I don't know if it is malfunctioning or operating as it is suppose to be?

  • Sleep Question when "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep" is unchecked

In the Energy Saver options, I unchecked the "Put the hard disks to sleep when possible" option ... what happens if I close the lid? Does that option get overridden and the hard drive goes to sleep?
Will I be safe to move my mbp around in my backpack when I travel? Or do I have to shut it down totally? I tried finding the answer but couldn't find a real response.
I just want to know if the laptop's drive stops spinning and I can move it around safely or if I should always turn off my mbp when I put it in my backpack. Thanks for any answers.
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    > what happens if I close the lid? Does that option get overridden and the hard drive goes to sleep?
Yes, it's over-ridden, the heads park and you can move it around happily
Make sure it does actually go to sleep and not hang up on some run-away (BootCamp) process or similar ... you can tell by the noise. If it's not silent within 10 seconds of the lid closing open it up again and check Activity Monitor.
