Big Bang and GD65 (8D) PCI Loading

I am trying to compare the Big Bang and GD65 (8D) for a hypervisor.
My plan is to have two different video cards.  One would require a x16 slot, the other would be OK in a x8.  Now, I would like to determine how to best configure the drives and an extra NIC.
I am expecting 8 drives, 6 SSD and two HDD.  4 of the SDDs are for the host and 3 VMs, the other 2 are for buffering the 2 HDs.  This four-set, it seems, have to be on the onboard SATA3 to use the hardware caching feature.  For this, either board would seem to work.  Then the other 4 SSDs can be serviced with a discrete 4 port SATA for the GD65 or a 2 port for the BB.  The onboard SATA, I would guess, have dedicated PCI lanes.  But when a card is added, do all the ports share the cards lane?  So the item I am stuck on is whether the x8 slots for the GD65 will comprimise the SATA's through put for simultaneous access.
What would be a good setup?

HU16E,
Wow, that was an eye opener.  Thank you for the details.
So the best I could hope for would be to use the two Intel ports for a RAID cache, and then have a controller card to pick up another two ports that can be configured as the Intel.  Am I getting close?
1)  Is there any advantages for putting the 2 HDDs and 2 SSD on the same card versus splitting them to on board and discrete card?
2)  Is there slot arrangement trade-offs to coordinate the need for speed on the SATA3 ports and the one high end graphic controller?
I did not realize that caching the HDD was a RAID function.  But I have not been able to locate an online description (RAID #).  I have found a variety of proprietary solution white papers but no details.
Any idea what I can look for to learn more about this?

  • MSI Big Bang XPower II - Firewire and PCI issues

    Hi all,
yesterday i recieved my new MSI Big Bang XPower II and got some really strange issues:
First of all ill let you know my hardware:
MSI Big Bang XPower II (BIOS v1.4) new
    Intel I7 Extreme 3960X new
    G.SKILL 64GB RAM Kit 1600 new
Palit NVIDIA GTX 680 - 4096 near new
3 x RME Soundcards used but okay
7 x WD 2TB SATA where 3 are OS Systems and 4 are Storage used but okay
Be Quiet Dark Power 1200W new
    1 Problem:
There is absolutely no Firewire available. I tested the onboard connection (which is at the backplate) and i also tested the extension connection with a additional firewire slot. Also it seems that wether Windows nor Linux is recognizing the firewire at all. The strange thing is that i recieved this new board after i send the first one back to my reseller with exactly the same problem!!! I also take a look into the BIOS if there is any option i need to activate but as far as i see there is nothing to set for 1394?
    2 Problem:
As you can read above i use my GTX680 and all 3 RME Soundcards each with one PCI Slot. But some of the slots are not working fine. If i, for example mount my GTX680 to Slot 1 and want to mount my first RME Souncard to slot 4 (2 and 3 are covered under my GTX680) its not working. If i try it in slot 6 for example, the soundcard works fine.
    BUT:
The slot 4 is not damaged cause if i set my GTX680 to slot 8 and retry my RME Cards in slot 4 its working...
    Never had that before!
I connected the 24pin ATX and both 8pin connectors (the 4pin additional connector for the graphics is not used).
Would be nice if someone guiding me through the dark

With so many components and shared resources, you are gambling with IORQs and I/O addressing space.
Mmmhmm i dont thought about getting interrupts, MSI is offering the board with that configration/features and if there is one user out who try to use the board near to the fullest it should of course work or not?!

    Hey Guys
I´ve got a big problem with my Big Bang Xpower II Mainboard. Although i´ve got at PCI-e compatible (Gigabybte GTX760 OC) which is placed in PCI-e Slot 1 and PCI-e Gen 3 activated my Board doesn´t activate PCI-e 3. I´ve already tried to install the UEFI on several ways but nothing helped.
    My specs:

Aha, but how windows changes will affect BIOS PCI-e version reading?
etc: this one which you said:

You can see the PCI-e Version activated before the Xpower BIOS Screen shows off (the where it show all data about the ASMedai chip ...
or this still shows 2.0 during bios post screen?

  • MSI Big Bang-XPower, Corsair AX1200W and 6-pin motherboard connector

Hello, I apologize if this has been answered but I didn't seem to find it on the forums. I have the Corsair AX1200 power supply and the MSI Big Bang-XPower motherboard. The board has two ATX 8-pin connectors. I know that the second one is only needed if you are doing serious overcloking. But I assume it's ok to plug both in whether or not I'm overclocking?? I see the AX1200 has two EPS/ATX 8-4 pin connectors so I am fine there.
My real question is that the mother board also has an ATX 6-pin connector for the graphics card. Firstly, is this needed since the graphics card has it's own power connector (I have the EVGA SuperClocked 015-P3-1582-AR GeForce GTX 580). The card needs a PCI-E 6 pin and an 8 pin connector. I see the AX1200 has six 6+2 pin connectors so I believe I'm fine there.
But for the motherboard connector, can i use one of the PCE-E 6+2 pin connectors (just 6 pins obviously), or is this not good sine the connector is not labeled as an ATX connector?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Bumping this as it is the question I have. How does the motherboard access this power from the EPS? It is constantly available to the cpu? Would it not be better to plug in the 2x8 pin EPS anyway as it gives a greater redundancy?
I am sorry if this is a stupid question but I recently got flamed on a forum for carrying on about connecting the EPS cables up to my Corsair Ax850. The flamers carried on and on about how I would never need to use the EPS unless it was LN2 cooling.
I cannot see the harm in it but I would like to understand computer power supplies a bit more and how exactly they work. For example why do some vid cards have 6 pin and other 8 pin when it looks as if both plugs just have a 12 volt lead on one row and the other row a ground lead?
    Anyhoo.
    Happy first post to me.

  • Big bang Xpower SATA 1-6 problems and Sound Card wont install.

My new system came in the mail today and I put it all together only to find out that my Hard Drives and DVD drive would not be recognized from time to time. The BIOS would sometimes not detect the drives and sometimes it would. I finaly was able to get windows 7 installed only to have the compter freez on me. (I belive the freez was due to the drives being dropped, cause I could still move the mouse around but the rest was froze) I also could not get the included sound card to detect, I had it plug in to the spot the manual says to have it and durring my many reboots(due to the drives dissapearing) one time the plug and play wizzard showed that the card was detected but befor I could install the drivers the cpu froze again. I am useing the system now via the 2 SATA 6 ports/ ports 7/8. the computer runs fine on those 2 ports. One of my questions is the are the 2 6gb/s SATA ports controled by a differnt controler then the 3gb's SATA ports? Im just trying to understand why those work and the others dont. What could be damaged on the board that would cause the 3gb/s SATA ports to not function and drop the drives connected to them at random? Also the sound card not detecting could that have some tie in to the SATA problme? The sound card uses PCIE port 1 to funtion but I have no problems runing my video card and its on a PCIE slot. Maybe the sound card is controlled by the same controller used for the SATA ports that are not working??? Let me know what you guys think. I have a replacement board on the way but I would like to know for sure that its not something else causeing my problem. Sorry for the spelling errors/typos, its late and Ive been fighting with this all day.
The new parts I got today are as follows

I am using the 6.0 ports as we speak with 3.0 and 1.5 devices and its working fine. It even detects the speeds of the drives upon startup. Are you mistaken on the backward compatibility with this chipset.
Sometimes we can't believe some of the reviews & articles we read. I'll research that a bit more too.
I currently have a ticket in with Tech Support concerning two things, one the Quantum Wave card sound crackling like a walk on corn flakes. Also trying to get confirmed if the PCI-E slots E2 thru E7 support anything other than VGA's. Faulty audio controller maybe. Tested Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty Champion & it crackles too. Not so sure W7 64 bit doesn't have something to do with it.

"The new 6.0 spec also offers enhancements to support multimedia applications, enhancements for increased functionality, and is even backwards compatible with earlier SATA implementations 1.5 and 3 Gb/sec."

  • New build with big bang x-power board. Any help welcome and appreciated.

Started new build with big bang x-power board, i7 960 processor, 3 x 4gb mushkin cl7 ram and imation m-class 128gb solid state drive running Windows 7 ultimate x64. This particular SSD is probably just temporary. Since I don't have the SSD I really want (yet) and this 1 was given to me at no cost, by a friend who really hated it, I thought it would suit my current needs. The specs & reviews were not encouraging, but they were not exactly "terrible" either.
Anyway, I was unable to install the OS on the Imation drive, while connected to a sata2 port. Got repeat bsod despite many variations in settings, including fail safe defaults. After clearing cmos and switching to a sata3 port, I got it to install no problem after putting settings back to cpu voltge: 1.35, dram voltage: 1.65, mode: AHCI and all others: default with only 1 RAM module seated.
So... I think this may be a BIOS issue and was hoping someone could point me to the most recent BIOS version available for me to update my BBXP board. I believe v1.6 is what i'm looking for, unless my info is outdated. Since my plan is ultimately to run the OS from an SSD using a sata2 port, I definitely want to resolve this, and hopefully any other issues with the v1.0 BIOS that I just haven't encountered yet.

Thanks again HU16E, and sorry for any confusion and/or lack of information. I'm guess you can tell i'm still new at this, but I'll try to do better with specifics in the future   -please forgive me.
SSD = Solid State Drive. The brand of this particular solid state drive is "Imation" and the series is "M-Class." It is a sataII device that would not install the OS while connected to any of the sataII ports on the board. Initial attempt was made with all settings on auto. When that didn't work, I adjusted voltages because it seemes unstable with repeat freezes and restarts. The install seemed to start ok with adjusted voltages but still would not complete.
I then moved the sataII drive to a sataIII (marvell) port, put all settings back on auto and the install went further (loaded files, copied files, expanded files, etc) but would froze several times during windows start up attempt. I then changed cpu & dram voltages back to the adjusted values I tried when the drive was connected to the sataII port and everything worked fine. Tested under load for 4 hours and no problems of any kind. Its still working now. I do however suspect I will have many more problems when I move the solid state back to a sataII port, or when I add my other Hard Disk Drives.
BIOS version showed: 1.0.0 but i can check again to assure I didn't misread anything in my haste. If i'm mistaken, I will post the correction. Hope I answered everything the way you wanted & didn't just make matters worse and more confusing  lol.  thanks for the link as well, i'll check on it asap

  • Z77A-GD65 vs Big Bang-XPower II

    Hello all,
i am curious can anyone tell me if the  Big Bang-XPower II has KILLER™ E2200 GAME NETWORKING
and which one of them is better?!?!?
I am building a desktop for all purposes, but mostly gaming.
    Thanks in advance...

As Z77A-Gd65 is a socket 1155 board and BB XPower II is a high-end socket 2011 board you can't compare them. If you are into multi gpu and benchmarking records or pro overclocking a socket 2011 board might be the better but way more expensive choice. Z77A-GD65 is good for a way cheaper gaming machine.
None of these boards offers Killer Lan. It is anyway mostly known for issues rather than for a better gaming experience. The board with Killer Lan is Z77A-GD65 Gaming which is a different board based on Z77A-GD65 but with Killer Lan, Sound Blaster audio and a different color scheme. All the rest is identical with Z77A-GD65.

  • Big Bang bundle and i7-3820 heavy oc.

    So!
My set is now "run in" and I´m about to do some (hopefully) heavy oc:ing.
    Spec:
    Big Bang Bundle
    Xpower II X79
    i7-3820
    MSI 7970
    32Gb G-Skill 1600Mhz ram
    2x256Gb Samsung 830(Raid0)
    3Tb WD Hdd
    Cooling
2 massive loops with each a 320 rad an PnP Scythe fans!
    Cpu: EK supreme HF
    Gpu: Ek Acetal/Nickel
    temps in original settings:
    cpu:
idle, 21-28c (a bit strange core 0 and 3 are several c higher, remounted block and paste 2 times with no different result, so It just cant get better:( )
    Load, 45-55c
So, there´s room for good oc:ing
Gpu (here I know what to do with all settings)
    idle, 21
    load, 28.. hell yeah:)
    Now the cpu q:s
Haven´t been overclocking since the s478 platform and all I had to do then was cranking up the fsb and select a good ram divider (and maybe some cpu voltage)
so, is there anything special with this X79 platform? or just simple tampering with hmmm.. bclk(fsb) and ram freq. and maybe som voltage tweaking? I´m hoping to get an stable clock around 4,7-5+ (for 2h a day, it´s only a gamingsetup)
And I wonder how my Corsair HX850 will hold up with all the oc?
Tips an maybe a complete setting scheme?
    Thanx in advance!

It looks like it is closer to 4.4 than 4.3 with a reported 4399.89. Unless you want to lose all the power saving features, do not take CPU V. out of Auto. If bclk 106 is stable, I would say it is OC'd to a reasonable level with power saving still intact. As for graphics card tweaking, I leave all mine at reference, only so many FPS the human mind and eyes can detect, and will leave that for others to advise.
As for the RAM, again, once the CPU OC is confirmed stable, try DRAM Freq. at 1600 and see what happens. Not sure of what the DRAM V. by the manufacturer is suggested for 1600 speed, but probably will need to increase the DRAM V. up some, but not exceeding 1.65v's. SA V. probably 0.965v's, I/O V. to around 1.1v's.
Yepp it reports more n more 44, but decreased it to 43 anyway!
But 106 seems no longer stable, was stable a couple of hour bencmarking, playing etc. then I turn it off for 2-3 hours! and now it frteezez without any load at all!  why is that?  (went down to 100 again) so runninbg 4.3 now!
But I want more, preferrably 5Ghz, based om my temps with IBT(max test) reaching only 50 celcius! can live with 70c.. how do I get there? (mem, comes later)

    Hello,
I mistakenly trashed the applications list. In order to restore the applications list, I pulled the list out of trash to the desktop and then back to the sidebar. At this point, the applications were not available to the other users of the computer. I then copied the list to the universal applications folder. Hello Mike:
Welcome to Apple discussions (from where you were on the dark side):
    Try a couple of things.
Run repair disk from your software install DVD (until it reports no errors).
If that does not work, I would opt for an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
A&I installs a pristine version of OS X (which would have to be updated, of course) while preserving your files, programs, and settings.

  • Big Bang Xpower and enabling XMP = BSOD

first off all @ flobelix MSIHQ Red Rockets Team Member Global Moderator really sorry for the previous post ... did not realise my bad ...
now to the issue at hand ....
i have recently bought three 4gb memory modules (http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=DCFB005EA5CA7304) and when i enable xmp and turn on the pc .... it makes a first start (fans and everything turn on ) then seems to shut down again (for a couple of seconds) and then turns on again .... after that it takes it ages to get in to windows and randomly (especially when it is game stressed but not exclusively ) it gives me BSOD error 0x00000124...i have version 1.7 on bios ....is this an issue with the memory or the board ...?   ... shouldn't xmp work out of the box ....( i previously had the same issue with 6 dimms of 2gb each from corsair .. xms3 i also have a gigabyte ga ex58 ud5 and i have no issues like that) ... i have also tried, to up the mem to 1600mhz with xmp disable the issue remains .... any suggestions would be more than welcome....
    ty all

i will prob do that ... but also i am thinking of going back to the gigabyte mb ... the big bang was given to me by my brother (no oc done on it previously, was used for light gaming and mainly as a HTPC) since he doesn't have the space or time for a gaming PC and went to a less power hungry 3d generation Core I ...... although these timings are the standard default for this memory so if i have to "downgrade" there must be a reason which is either compatibility (according to crucial no such issue) or damaged parts .... and that is what i am trying to determine ... before i decide 100% what should i do (i think the mb might still be in guarantee from the retailer but i have to check on that)

  • XPower Big Bang PCIe Lane Allocation

I'm a bit confused about the way this motherboard allocates PCI Express lanes. Here's my current configuration starting with the first 1x slot ('-' is unused):
    1: 1x Creative X-Fi (sound)
    2: 16x Nvidia 9800GT (video)
    3: -
    4: 4x 3ware 9650SE-4LPML (raid #1)
    5: 1x Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 (tv tuner)
    6: 8x 3ware 9690SA-8E (raid #2)
    7: -
There are two problems I ran into. First, the tv tuner was a recent addition to an existing setup. I initially had both raid controllers in slots 4 & 5, so I tried installing the tv tuner in slot 6. The OS did not detect it at all. I moved it to slot 7 and the same thing happened. Nothing new in the device manager.
I started thinking that maybe those two slots weren't working, so I put the sound card into slot 6 and the tuner in slot 1. Now everything worked fine. Both are PCIe 1x cards, so I have no idea why swapping positions would allow both cards to be seen, while in the original setup only the sound card showed up (I checked the contacts, everything was ok). After some more testing I figured out that basically putting the tv tuner into any slot other than 6 or 7 works, which is why I now moved the second raid controller down.
My second problem is with how many lanes are actually allocated to each device. Using GPU-Z (0.4.4) I found out that the video card is only running with 8 lanes allocated to it instead of all 16. Furthermore, while the second raid controller is given 8 lanes, as I would expect, the first one is allocated just 1 lane instead of 4. This was determined by viewing the controller status using 3ware 3DM2 management interface.
Could someone explain why the video card and the first raid controller are not running with the maximum lane allocation? By the way, I did try moving raid #1 to slots 5 and 6. It was always given just 1 lane and the second controller is always given 8. I suppose for storage it doesn't make a huge difference, but can anything be done about the video card running at half capacity?

I'm not very familiar with this setting.
Neither am I.  What it basically does (analogous to an audio signal) is to modify the "volume" instead of the "frequency" and thereby modifying the signal strength.  The alternative name for that option is "PCI Express Clock Drive" or "PCI Express Clock Drive Strength".
Unfortunately, I was unable to get a hold of the the basic PCI-Express 2.0 Base Specifications, which are in fact available here:  http://www.pcisig.com/specifications/pciexpress/base2/ ... but only for registered users/members.
However, I googled around a bit to check the default setting for that option on other mainboards and found that a 900mv is also widely used as a standard setting.  This is one of the examples I found:
    http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showpost.php?p=11296184&postcount=1427
    Quote
    PCI Express CLock Drive [900mV]
Even though I did (as I said) not find official minimum and maximum ratings, the example at least indicates that the  supposedly extreme value of 1000 mV can be relativized when the default range is assumed as 800-900mV.
    Quote
It is possible to damage the motherboard and/or any PCIe cards by leaving the amplitude at 1000mV?
To be honest: I simply don't know.  May suggestion is that if the 1000mV setting in combination with that firmware fix for the card really has a significant effect on the problem, you should report your findings to MSI Technical Support and get their oppinion on this scenario (even though there may be a slight chance that this matter of facts may not really be part of the standard experience/knowledge repertoire of the average tech guy (the fact that you find almost nothing about this via google is rather symptomatic).
Under the bottom line, my assumption is that there is room for the possibility that the problem may be the card rather than the mainboard.  If the problem really had to do with the general strength of the PCI Express Clock signal(s) it would be hard to explain why only that one card is affected.  Perhaps the card is just super-sensitive (may that be a sign of a malfunctioning card or a general problem of that specific model).  I strongly recommend that you test another x4 RAID Card (model) and see if the problem still occurs.  In case it doesn't, this is a sure sign that your card is to blame rather than the mainboard or BIOS.

I recently purchased a Bing Bang Trinergy mobo. It's combined with an Intel i3 540 cpu and 2 Kingston KVR1333D3N9/2G ram modules. The mobo came with BIOS 1.1 version. When I've tried to update the BIOS to any version above 1.1 (1.2, 1.3, 1.4) and DUAL MEMORY CHANNEL is used, the system rans to slow, jerky sound immersed (can't play any video), the cores show above 60% load all the time, playing games is impossible (system hangs or blue screens appears), takes ages to load win7 Ultimate. I've tried everything, manual setting the timings of the ram, voltage, command rate 2N, nothing works. I've also test the system with 2xKINGSTON KHX1600C9AD3B1/2G ram modules but the same results obtained. I've checked all possible positions in dual channel mode, nothing. When only one module is used (single channel) then everything is ok. All the ram modules passed the memtest and verified for the their good working state.
The strange thing is that when the BIOS 1.1 version is used everything runs smoothly. BIOS update was perfomed with 2 different ways : 1. MSI windows application and 2. in DOS mode. Also the sound card (if God makes it a soundcard) sometimes worked and sometimes didn't.

The course of action seems clear. Revert & use 1.1.
This thread may have some good advice; https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=141272.0
Recommend to open a ticket with MSI Tech Support detailing your findings. They may be able to duplicate everything & address it in an updated bios. For bios flashing, it is highly recommended to use this forum's USB Flasher. You can find it along with instructions in the Download Section of the forum. It is also always recommended to do a 'power cord removed' from PSU clearining of CMOS after a flash.
