Big black X on Battery, Power Cord Stays Green

I've tried a few things i've read on this board. Can't seem to get my battery back charging. When i take the power cord out the system shuts down. Any ideas? Could the battery be dead?

There is a good chance your battery may need to be replaced. There are a number of power related issues that seem to be going around. Some seem to be caused by a faulty power supply... but in those cases, the MacBook will see the battery and the LED indicator on the MagSafe is usually dimmer than usual. For those that have the "X" through the battery, that indicates that the MacBook does not think there is a battery installed. You should go through the usual steps... reset the power management unit by shutting down your MacBook, removing the MagSafe and battery, and holding the power button in for about ten seconds. You can then put the battery back in and connect your MagSafe connector (reseating the battery is also recommended... but you will have done that in doing this procedure). I had exactly the same problem as you seem to be having. I stopped by my local Apple store and they replaced the battery and that fixed it. They had me stay there for a few minutes just to make sure it was working okay.

I plugged my g4 ibook in and it turned the computer

nothing happens. The battery on the bottom only one

In addition I removed the battery and the power indicator light went to green without the battery in and the power in it, but absolutely nothing. Replaced the battery and nothing. Please help I am in Ghana, and have no way to get help!!!

    Hey Ryan,
Can you hear drumming [I studied with a Ghanian master from the Univ. there for 5 years and have a few hand carved djembes which are awesome].
I'm hoping that will divert you because you're not likely to find a new adapter there but that's undoubtedly the problem. I bent the prong on one slightly and it did the same thing, it's possible yours is like that. If you don't have any knowledge of it being bent it probably happened inadvertently, so you might try letting it sit out in the hot African sun until the gold is very malable then just run your fingers round the prong very lightly try to align it. I tried all night and this didn't work but it did get the thing closer so it might work for you.
Here's a link to a very good price where I got my replacement and it's good $38: http://store.shentech.com/ap24v145wsqs.html

  • Can I use my old battery & power cord with my new machine?

    Hiya everyone,
I recently trashed the screen of my iBook bought in Sept 03 (by spilling water on it.) I've now bought a new one, and as the battery and power cable from my old machine are still fine, and as I could do with a spare of each, I just wanted to check it would be ok to use them with my newer machine.
Both machines are 12 inch iBook G4s, the only differences I can think of are as follows:
    Old machine:
    30GB hard drive
    1 GHz
    256MB ram
    New machine:
80GB hard drive (I had it customized)
    1.33GHz
    512MB ram
I'd appreciate knowing whether my old power cord and battery can be used with my new machine, so if anyone could answer my question, I'd be most grateful. Thanks everyone.

    Hi Charity,
Yes, you can use both. They have the same specs.

  • Battery/power cord problem

I have a new PowerBook Aluminum G4 and if the computer is plugged in for awhile and in use, it will automatically switch over to battery, thus running it down. Is this normal?
To get it running back on electrical power, I have to unplug the charger from the wall and plug it back in. Seems rather odd.

Does it do this every time, or just occasionally? These chargers are designed to shut off when they detect power surges, and unplugging+replugging is the right way to reset them. Perhaps the charger is defective, or your electrical power may be funky. Users also seem to report more problems like this when using the 2 flip-out prongs (duckhead) as opposed to the cord with 3 prongs.

  • Hp 2009m, black screen, power button stays on

    I have a HP 2009M. Windows Vista 64 bit. 4 yrs old.
I can turn my computer on fine, check email, watch videos, etc. but then the monitor screen will go black. The blue power button stays on. If I turn off, and back on. It will work for like 5-10 min or so, then it will be a black screen.  If I am watching a video when it goes to a black screen, I can still hear it playing.  I do hear a very faint buzzing sound coming from the monitor which I never heard before this happened.  Is it my desktop or do I need a new monitor?
    This question was solved.

    Hi NSCY,
The quickest way to isolate the problem to the monitor would be, if possible, either: try a different monitor with your PC or try the monitor on a different PC.
Check your graphics and power connections on both the PC and the monitor also.
Your graphics card could also be causing this issue.

I have searched for replacement cords, but have been unable to find the right one. I need the portion of cord that connects to back of PC and has a black box at the other end. What is the actual name for this piece of the cord and any suggestions on where I can get a replacement?? Thanks!!

  • MacBook goes dead as soon as power cord is unplugged..time for a new battery or other problem?

For months now my MacBook has been iffy with the battery percentage. It will show 2hours then within the next minute 25 min then 10 minutes then it shoots all the way up to 3 hours. Now it won't stay on unless the power cord is plugged in...and says "not charging" at the top of the screen. Am I in need of a new battery? Or is it something else? Have never had this problem before...my MacBook is approximately 3 years old...

You are posting in an iMac forum. I'd recommend re-posting in the MacBook forum.

  • IBook screen goes black after unplugging power cord

I originally posted this topic in the wrong discussion group for iMac G4, the computer is actually an iBook G4.
My wife's iBook bought about 2 years ago shows battery 100 percent charged. But when she unplugs the power cord the screen goes black. Can not be restarted until she plugs in the power cord. It seems like it might be the battery. She got extra batteries when she bought it. Is there a way to tell if it is the battery before having to replace it?

Did you check on the status of your battery using "About this Mac" under the Apple on the menu bar? Click on "More Info..." and select Power under Hardware. It will tell you capacity and cycle count.
You may have a dead battery.

they said leap year added extra day so too late out of warrenty, sorry but can sell you new one  i called apple said same , a company that big should take care of customers the origanel receipt should of said under date of purchess warrnty to end date following year,

That's strange, because no where in the iPhone's limited warranty does it state "365 days", but it does state 1 year. I think the only way they could get out of that is because of the battery, which is not covered by the warranty. HOWEVER, it is stated on AT&T's website that claims are handled from 31-365 days, which would explain why the Apple people acted as such. I know you have Verizon, but since it is (essentially) the same device, it's under the same warranty.

Many people have had stories about issues happening as soon as their warranty expires, with products in general.
I'd just consider upgrading, and selling your old one.

  • My battery isn't charging, and when I unplug my power cord, it immediately dies.  There is an "X" inside the battery icon, and the power cord light is green...how can I fix this?

    Hi,
I bought a Macbook Pro last February, and this is the first time this issue has occurred.  My computer has been working fine, but this morning the battery icon is showing a big "X" through it, and when I unplug my power cord, the computer shuts off.  Also, the power cord light is green, which I take to mean that it can't be charged anymore.  How can I fix this?
    Thanks!!

I had similar issue with one of the macbooks in the office. Make sure you've got latest firmware installed (run Software Update). This resolved the issue for us instantly (you may need to reboot mac AFTER firmware upgrade for this to work).

  • Have a G3 pismo, works great, but when I plug in the power cord, the light won't come on to indicate its charging. It is charging, and the battery is good, its just that the light won't come on. Could it be something with the backup battery?

I have a G3 bronze keyboard that works, with a good battery, but when the power supply is plugged in, the charging light on the back of the laptop
will not come on. It is charging however, and have two different apple power adapters and both will charge the main battery, it's just that the light won't come on.
Did a reset of the pmu, but no changes. The date stays current, but wondering if the backup battery could be getting weak and affecting it , or is something else going on?

The power connector in the G3 PowerBook is a weak link.  Removed, it looks like this:
    [image from http://microdocusa.com/specials.html ]
The connector probably hasn't failed, but the solder joints where "legs" on  the connector  attached to the logic/power board are under a lot of stress after 10 years of use. Little bumps and tugs on the power cord eventually degrade the connection. You can check for looseness easily---see if the connector feels loose when you GENTLY wiggle it with a fingertip. It should have zero play if it's still firmly attached. You can also plug in the power adaptor and see if slight movements if the plug make the light turn on. Pretty diagnostic of a loose connector.
    The date stays current,
Make sure you are doing this check correctly. If you have an always-on internet connection, the date/time are fed froma  network time server and will always read properly unless you test with the internet connect turned off or disconnected.

  • Macbook pro turns off when taken off the power-cord, is the battery bad?

For a while my MCP when I take it off the charger it doesnt hold the whole time as it should and the battery doesnt last long, and now the past couple days when i take my laptop off the power-cord it will stay on for five minutes then shut down. I dont know what is going on, maybe a bad battery? I got my computer august 2006 . These are my numbers.
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 590
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 431
    Amperage (mA): 685
    Voltage (mV): 12575
    Cycle Count: 167
isnt the fully charge capacity a little low? what should I do?
    thanks!

If your MacBook Pro is a core duo model you may have a bad battery and be elgible for a battery replacement. The batteries on the original core duo MacBook and MacBook Pro had the warranty extended and extra year. The details are in this link.
MacBook and MacBook Pro Battery Update 1.2
Call Apple at the number in the link and explain your problem. You could also go into an Apple store and get help there.
