I was on the phone today with a video camera company (tech support likely outsourced to overseas). I was having trouble with their videos displaying on my computer.
They asked me for my permission to install software on my computer!!
How is it possible for them to do that from elsewhere?
They are a big name, legit company... but if they can do it with my permission, who can do it without it?
Appreciate any insights on this.

You'd have to open the gate for them to install it first off.
That's why you have settings in Apple menu -> System preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall.
As for trouble displaying videos, many companies like to rely on Windows Media videos which can be viewed if you add http://www.flip4mac.com/
Nobody can install software without your permission unless you deliberately open the gate for them to do it.

The gray area here actually has to do with breaking encryption- under US copyright law, users have always been allowed to make a single back-up (Fair Use) of any recorded media they have purchased. It is possible that media companies are, themselves, in violation of copyright law by making it difficult to make said backups by encrypting their media. Also, copying (ripping, recording, etc.) any DVD in any way would seem to be covered by the warning at the start of all DVDs (including soundtracks), which would include Audio Hijack, for instance. This all came about when the digital revolution made it possible to create exact copies. Back in the day, copying an LP to cassette, for instance, was not considered a problem, because you would lose a generation. BTW, ripping music DVDs can be problematic, as they are mastered differently than are "movies," and some Mac ripping programs have difficulty with them. Proceed cautiously and consider legal ramifications, but also consider retaining YOUR legal rights as well.

I purchased a used iMac on CL. The owner said he had reinstalled the original OS (v10.6.4 and upgraded it to v10.6.8. to remove his personal data. He did not install the Applications disk. The computer works fine. The model identifier is iMac 10.1. He gave me what he said were the original gray Apple-logo Applications and OS dvds. I tried to install the Applications DVD but receive the error " Alert: you cannot install this software on your computer." He says these are the original disks. I'm new to the Mac and would like some help. Thanks.

Sounds like you might just need the > Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 which can be installed over the 10.6.8 system version.
Then if that doesn't work, start over fresh and use the combo update above.

Installing leopard, error : cannot install software on this computer

i have a macbook 13 inch, new, it's been one month bought it.
i have tiger 10.4.11 and i want to upgrade to leopard.
i had this install disk ( leopard 10.5).
the problem is that, while installing, when i choose the language, an error pop up saying:" cannot install software on this computer"

Most of the problems I see of this nature are being caused by people trying to use a "Drop-In" upgrade DVD that was designed for a specific machine.
The problem is that some people think they can run any 'friends' upgrade DVD to upgrade their Mac also.
If this is what's happening, and your computer is really only a month old, then you probably qualify for some type of upgrade from Apple. Or you will have to buy a retail version of Leopard to upgrade your machine.

Software Update doesn't have any new software for your computer at this time

I manged to get all my updates downlaoded and on my server, i have currently enabled 133 of 400 updates.
I have changed my snow leopard machine to point to the internal update server
But then after a while of checking this displays software Update doesn't have any new software for your computer at this time
Which is a Lie, because i know there are updates on the server that the computer needs to have.

Perhaps you can copy it using a different computer, from the disk to a USB key.
However, external DVD drives are cheap and in my view essential.

This is a common problem on many laptops, not just HP ones. I guess that the device BIOS might be bugged and cause troubles but that is just my guess. I haven't seen any solution for this except restoring the computer to a previous working condition but if the computer is a new one and the webcam hasn't worked at all, it may not work ever at all.

Late reply, but if anyone is experiencing the same problem, I've found a solution. For whatever reason, some macbooks don't recognize usb flash drives during the boot-up phase, even though the usb ports themselves are powered (I tested this with a multimeter). The solution then, was to use an external USB hard drive that has its own power supply to install Snow Leopard. I don't know why, but it's the only way I got my macbook (Macbook 2,1/A1181) to recognize the install drive. Every was smooth sailing from there!

I'm trying to schan a doc into my computer from a Printers\HPF7A4F8 (HP Photosmart Plus B210 series). I'm using windows 7. All other funtions seem to work but when I try to scan the doc, the HP message says it doesn't find the printer (yes, the printer it brought up to ask what I wanted to do).

If the top bar menu is not displayed in top left of your iTunes Library, use the CTRL+B keys to turn it on:
