Big clunking boxes around buttons (grow when button moved)

I've created a menu by first picking the blank menu, adding a background image, and 3 images then turned to buttons
I edited the rest of the look I wanted in photoshop... but I end up with some big clunking boxes around the buttons that grow when I select and move the buttons around.  I've included a small screen shot that shows the Red borders around the buttons. (Then turn green when selected).
How can make these boxes conform to the size of the image plus text?  What is it inside the botton groups in PS that control that?
I've also included a small screen shot showing the typical organization of a button in photoshop
PS - Oh, yes,   I did unhook automatic button routing and make sure the routing was what appeared sound.
And now the photoshop screenshot showing organization of buttons (2 open groups 1 closed to keep size down but the arragement is the same as the other two)

Stanley nailed it.
When doing editing in PS, I always turn on Visibility for each Button (remembering to turn the off, before the final Save), and then twirl closed each Button Layer Set. The reason for that is that I will then ONLY Select the entire Button Layer Set, when I begin moving things about. That keeps me from dragging an elemental Layer in the Button Layer Set and also making sure that any Move operation does so for every element in that Button Layer Set. Before I adopted that workflow, it was common for me to accidentally grab an element, and Move it, or grab most, but not all, leaving elements behind. Now, I cannot make that mistake.
Also, and as an aside, one can increase the area of a Button, if needed. Normally, we're trying to shrink the size of a Button to allow for tighter locations on a Menu, but imagine that you have done dupe Menus, so that a graphic appears to be part of the Button in a roll-over state. On a computer, the user will need to Dbl-click on the initial Button, as a computer DVD software player will not allow for AutoActivation. If there are elements that "appear" to be part of the actual Button, but are not, the computer user might be clicking on areas that are NOT part of that Button. By including a larger, but totally transparent rectangle, the area of the Button has been increased to what the user might expect it to be. It's almost like including an "Easter egg" inside a real Button. As you have seen, one does not need be able to see all of the elements of a Button, but the Bounding Box will definitely be influenced by the largest element of that Button, and all others, if they are outside of the bounds of that one. That Bounding Box will transcribe a rectangle that encompasses ALL elements in that Button, and leave a few pixels around them.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Black box around buttons and windows

My 19 month old daughter has learned to climb up to the desk, and OPEN my laptop! Before I could stop her, or turn on AlphaBaby, she had pressed a number of keys, and now a little black box highlights various things in the programs I have open. As I type this, the red circle at the top left to close the window has a box around it. When I was trying to find how to turn it off in system preferences, the bar at the top with the arrows and Show All button had a box around it. In Mail my inbox window has a box around it.
Any ideas as to how to turn it off?
    Thanks!
    Heidi

    Your daughter shows great promise!
Go to System Preferences/Universal Access and turn OFF Voice Over.

  • Faint Boxes Around Buttons in Dialog Boxes

Sorry if this is answered elsewhere, but the discussion search seems to be deactivated.
When dialog boxes appear in any application, there is a faint lighter gray box around the UI elements like buttons and text. Not impacting performance, but it's just driving me nuts.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

I am also experiencing this issue:

    Orangekay:
You make an interesting point about Carbon/Cocoa apps and perhaps a subtle change in background colour on the dialog boxes being responsible.
I have experienced this on iTunes 7.7 (released early-July) - see http://www.flickr.com/photos/jammylammy/2738394376 but it doesn't appear on Safari - see http://www.flickr.com/photos/jammylammy/2735078907.
I wonder if the Safari team (within Apple) knew about the change but the iTunes team didn't...

  • Strange... Black boxes around buttons and files

Anyone seen this issue or know how to fix it?
Sometime last week, black boxes started appearaing around files or folders on my desktop, buttons in the finder, and file names in open windows. It is always one box at a time (whatever I select or mouse over.)
The box is 2-3 pixels thick and has a white stroke around it. It's not effecting performance, but it is really anoying.
    Thanks in advance!

Ugh, sounds like your video card may be going.
If you create a new, clean & fresh account and log in, do you get the same thing?

  • The yellow box around the pages when using Word Processing

I am somewhat new to the Mac, work with "Pages" to do newsletters. The first time I chose to use the Word Processing. Next I tried Pages layout.
It was when clicked on "View thumbnails" in Word Processing newsletter that I noticed the yellow box all around the pages. If I tried to delete a page, they all went. Luckily there is an "undo delete" button. (o:
I have since read the difference between layout and Word Processing from one of the posts. Is there any way to delete the yellow box?
    Compumom4

There is one yellow box for each Section of the document. When you delete a Thumbnail, you delete the entire Section, however many pages are in that section. In Page Layout, each Page is a Section, so it may be deleted without affecting other pages.
To delete one page out of a Section in a Word Processing document, the easiest way is to highlight all its content and hit the Delete key.

  • I just put up a new iWeb website and firefox is putting BIG BLACK BOXES around all my photos. Why has this not been fixed yet? I have to tell everybody who views my site NOT to use Firefox. This is unacceptable. Please fix ASAP. This is my site below.

with 3.6.19 it works well, no black boxes
with 5.0.1 there are black boxes

You will have to wait for Firefox 6 to get this fixed. It is a bug only in Firefox 5. That bug existed when the Firefox 5 code was split off and Firefox 5 didn't get the fix that later version got.

  • Click boxes revert to continue when file moved

For a long time I have been the only Captivate user in my department as a result, I just left the primary file on my hard drive and just put copies in our network drive as a backup. When I did this, I just opened it to make sure it didn't get corrupted and then closed it without actually playing it.
Then recently my co-worker started using Captivate as well and we started collaborating so I had both of us put copies of our files on the network (keeping our original files on the respective hard drives for safety purposes). I opened her file and tried working with it when I noticed something - all the click boxes she had set to jump to specific slides had reverted to "Continue."
We quickly checked my network copies and the same thing was happening.
Thinking maybe it was the network causing that somehow, my co-worker tried copying the file from her laptop to her desktop with the same results.
Any ideas what is causing it and how to fix it?  We are both using Captivate 6 from Tech Communications Suite 4. (We do plan to upgrade to suite 5 shortly.)
    Thanks in advance

    HI there
The option "continue playing project" needs to be DE-selected. With it selected, when your user clicks the Click Box, play will resume.
There is no way I'm aware of to influence the browser behavior as it's up to the configuration on each user's PC as to whether you see a new window or a new tab.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Boxes around text in PDF's

Sometimes I get a white hairline box around some text when I export to PDF doc. Is there any cure for that?

That's a transpaerncy flattening artifact called "stitching" that normally doesn't show up in high-resolution printing. The obvious answer is to stop flattening the transparency by exporting to PDF using Acrobat 5 or higher comaptibility.
If you search for stitiching in this forum you will find more information than you can read in a week.

  • I have these black boxes surrounding things, e.g., there is a black box around the red "close" button on the upper left corner of this page.  There is also an oblong black box

Hi - I'm not only having trouble waking up my MBP from sleep and having to restart repeatedly which is a pain in itself, but now when it restarted, I have these black boxes surrounding things, e.g., there is a black box around the red "close" button on the upper left corner of this page.  There is also an oblong resizable black box sitting on top of anything.  The content changes depending on the actions I take.  Right now it says, "You are currently on a close button.  To click this button, which closes the current window, press Control-Option-Space."  Right now I'm open in Firefox, but it doesn't matter if only Finder is open, it's still there.  I've tried closing all my applications and restarting and I also reset the PRAM.  It won't go away.  It's probably something simple, but I don't know how to get rid of it.  Any suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks,
    Janet

Thanks so much.  I saw this on "desktop strangeness" immediately after I posted and tried to retract my question.  It worked perfectly.  I'm not sure how VoiceOver got turned on unless something happened when I was trying to wake up the computer.  I open the lid and it flashes whatever is open and then the screen goes black and I can't wake it up.  Still looking for the resolution to this.

Help, my iphone 5 is locked and will not function! I've turned it off and on and it has the same fault. What ever you press on the screen highlights with a box round it. When you press the round button with the square in the centre the voice on the phone tells you the time. Then the voice says screen lock. If I try and unlock the phone the voice says phone unlock but you can't put the code in. If you hight the box it will say the number but not put the code in?! What's the crack?

Quickly Triple tap the home button to de-activate VoiceOver.

  • Make the purple box around text and icon of a button go away?

I have noticed that the first button of a group (or the last one pressed) displays a purple box around the text and/or the icon of a button. I don't want this. How do I get rid of it?

Have you tried setting the colour that you want manually? Or perhaps setting the setOpaque() method with false?
Not entirely sure what you mean...what look and feel are you using? Is it the Metal LAF or something else?

  • My home button is loose and snappy. When resting my thumb on the home button I can gently slide it around. Also when pressing home buttonit sounds snappy...!?!?!

WHen i rest my thumb on the home button... i can gently slide it around. Also when I press the home buttton it sounds snappy... Similar to when pressing the center of a jar cap after it has been opened. Is this normal? Do I have a defective phone?

The button has multiple functions.  Pressing, tapping, reading your finger print,..  If you think it is too loose, visit an apple retail store (with an appointment), and have them look at it.  But I think that it should have some play, as to access reachability, you have to touch it twice, while tapping it twice brings up the app switcher.

  • Black border around buttons and boxes

My browser displays a thick black rectangle around buttons and dropboxes. It affects webkit browsers, luakit and surf. This is a stripped down atom desktop. There is gtk 2 2.24, libwebkit 1.8.3, standard xorg, xf86-video-intel 2.20.5 (i915), and cairo, all from the arch repo, and linux-ck-atom 3.5.3 from AUR. I have cairo but no mesa and no compiz. Adding mesa doesn't fix it. But it's possible I removed some important graphic library. Any suggestions how I might fix it?

Thanks for the suggestions. The accelerators don't make a difference, neither does today's new intel driver. I've had the same version of cairo since June (1.12.2-1 -> 1.12.2-2) and this problem is recent. As a last resort I'll try to find an old cairo package. But maybe I should look into libwebkit or gtk first.

  • Slideshow captions appear to have boxes around them when viewed on mobile devices

Hi... I searched for this problem but couldn't find a reference - appologies if I didn't quite use the right search terms and it's already been answered.
I am having problems with a basic slideshow widget - when viewed on a PC (iMac in this instance) the image captions, counter and navigation buttons do NOT have any visible borders (I haven't stroked or filled the container boxes, other than the nav buttons). However, view the same slideshow on an iPad, or iPhone and there appears to be boxes around the caption, counter and nav buttons. I would prefer there to be no visible box outlines.
The problem page can be viewed here (remember, fine on a PC, not fine on a mobile device)
    http://mikehiggs.co.uk/musesite/case-studies.html
There are two slide shows on the page as I tried two different widgets - both have the same problem.
The odd thing is, I used the same method on the Home Page slideshow at the top of the page and this is working fine.
If anyone can shed any light on this 'problem' I'd very much appreciate it - I have tried everything I know at this stage.
Thanks in advance of any help.
    Addendum...
If I change the slideshow transitions from 'horizontal' to 'fade' the problem goes away. But I would prefer the slideshow to slide.
Just thought this extra info may help diagnose the problem.
