Big desktop using gnome

I have successfully installed the ATI driver with big desktop configuration. (on xorg 6.7)
I'm using gnome as WM.
With my previous gfxcard using xinerama, if I maximized a window, it would maximize on the monitor it is on. The big desktop of ATI (which doesn't allow the xinerama option) streches the window over all monitors. (complete desktop) Same goes for the gnome panels that have the expand property. Also gdm shows the loginbox half on screen 1, half on second screen. Very handy  :?
Is there any way to alter this behaviour so that it acts like the xinerama mode?
I haven't found anything on the internet about this, besides this post with simular question, though it doesn't have a valid answer:
http://lunar-linux.org/pipermail/xfce4- … 12099.html
I'm using a pretty standard generated config, with
Option "MonitorLayout"              "AUTO, AUTO"
I can't seem to find out if xorg config or gnome config is responsible.
I'm sure the solution must be trivial as nobody else seem to have this annoying behaviour

I have the same problem when I use the merged mode with my Matrox G550. I don't think you can solve this one: the X11 system is fooled in having a large desktop spread over 2 displays, without noticing there are two screens. That's where xinerama jumps in: it's an extension so apps know on which screen they are and what size that screen has. Without Xinerama, there is no option to control placement or stretching. Maybe the drivers themselves solve something internal, but I wouldn't count on it.

  • Showing Desktop Wallpaper using Gnome 3 & Nemo

    Hi,
I just installed Nemo as my file manager since I miss some of the features in Nautilus. To work properly I set Nemo to display the Desktop Icons. Sadly this overrides my Wallpaper blank and I don't know how to configure Nemo or Cinnamon to show it again. As Desktop Environment I am using Gnome 3.
The current gsettings are the following:
    org.cinnamon.desktop.background.color-shade-type = solid
    org.cinnamon.desktop.background.picture-opacity = 100
    org.cinnamon.desktop.background.picture-options = zoom
    org.cinnamon.desktop.background.picture-uri = file:///usr/share/themes/Adwaita/backgrounds/adwaita-timed.xml
    org.cinnamon.desktop.background.primary-color = #000000
    org.cinnamon.desktop.background.secondary-color = #000000
    org.gnome.desktop.background.color-shade-type = solid
    org.gnome.desktop.background.picture-opacity = 100
    org.gnome.desktop.background.picture-options = zoom
    org.gnome.desktop.background.picture-uri = file:///usr/share/themes/Adwaita/backgrounds/adwaita-timed.xml
    org.gnome.desktop.background.primary-color = #023c88
    org.gnome.desktop.background.secondary-color = #5789ca
    org.gnome.desktop.show-desktop-icons = true
    org.nemo.desktop.show-desktop-icons = true
I have not yet configured nemo to start on login, so when I do log in my Desktop Wallpaper is shown properly, once I open Nemo it turns blank.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
    Greetings
    Dero
    EDIT:
I just installed cinnamon to test if the background works there and it did. Maybe there is something that needs to be edited in the gnome-session?

Looks cool, here is the an equivalent bash script for Gnome3, it's not random though, it just cycles.

It's supposed to work, but for me it does nothing.

  • [SOLVED] Subversion will not use gnome-keyring

    Hi,
Anyone know how to use gnome-keyring with subversion?  When I run svn up, I get the following warning every time:
ATTENTION! Your password for authentication realm:
    <https://123.456.789.012:443> Subversion Repository
can only be stored to disk unencrypted! You are advised to configure
your system so that Subversion can store passwords encrypted, if
possible. See the documentation for details.
You can avoid future appearances of this warning by setting the value
of the 'store-plaintext-passwords' option to either 'yes' or 'no' in
    '/home/david/.subversion/servers'.
    Store password unencrypted (yes/no)?
I googled a bit and found that you can use gnome-keyring to store passwords encrypted.  I tried setting "password-stores = gnome-keyring" in ~/.subversion/config, but this had no effect.
I have the package 'extra/gnome-keyring' installed.  From what I can see Subversion is always compiled with gnome-keyring support.  I also tried starting the gnome-keyring-daemon, since it's not started by default (I don't use GNOME as my WM).  I started it from the command line using 'gnome-keyring-daemon' command.  But this had no effect - subversion acts like it doesn't know gnome-keyring even exists.
    Any idea?
    Cheers,
    David

    I had the same problem.
When the daemon gets started it prints some environment variables with values to stdout. I think other programs like subversion read these to connect to the daemon.
    Starting the daemon like this:
    export `gnome-keyring-daemon`
in your .xinitrc or at a comparable place should solve your problem.
Of course, this only applies if you're not using the gnome desktop environment.

  • Downgrade Gnome 3.10 to 3.8 to use Gnome Flashback?

Do I have to downgrade to 3.10 to 3.8 to use Gnome Flashback?
According to this it says that it isn't supported by 3.10.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GNOME_Flashback
If that is not possible, is there another way to get my desktop enviroment to look like it?
    https://wiki.gnome.org/GnomeFlashback
I read here the problems that flashback has with version 3.10.

No you do not have to downgrade to 3.8 to run flashback but it will certainly feel much less broken on the 3.8 stack. What's meant in the wiki is that there are significant problems if you run the flashback desktop on the 3.10 stack (as was mentioned in the mailing list.) Flashback will run on 3.10, I've tried it myself but it doesn't run very well. The logout and shutdown dialogues won't work for instance. Desktop icons weren't working though I think that has been fixed now. Metacity doesn't know how to deal with the new titlebars in gnome apps yet so it leaves ugly black edges around the top corners. That kind of thing. It is possible to downgrade to 3.8 if you so wish.
Head to the this page: http://seblu.net/a/arm/
Download the packages and install them.
    pacman -Q | grep -i 3.10
is a good place to start if you don't know what to downgrade.  Bear in mind that you willl then have to edit pacman.conf and add the names of the downgraded packages to the ignorepkg section to ensure they're not upgraded by accident. Take care when downgrading because you could end up with conflicts and other similar problems.
Of course you'll have a much easier time with mate, xfce or gnome shell classic mode if the classic gnome like desktop is what you want but I guess you know that anyway. Be advised that the flashback packages in the AUR have been orphaned so there might be newer versions of gnome-panel etc. There isn't a 3.10 version yet though that's for certain.
Thanks for the advice! I think you're right, that seems like way too much work just to get it working. I'm looking into DWM, it's more similar to what I'm looking for than gnome classic or xfce, I've used both but they seem too, flashy for my tastes.

I use Gnome, but cinnamon-settings.py launches when I right-click on the desktop.
Also, I need to manually use gnome-tweak-tool to change the wallpaper; setting wallpapers

  • Cannot Delete CPTL file from Desktop using Vista

    Hi All,
I cannot Delete CPTL file from Desktop using Vista. Explorer
crashes. It is a Captivate 2 file.
I have tried (with no luck):
    - logging in as a different user and deleting the file.
    - running explorer as an Administrator
    - uninstalling Captivate.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Raef

    Hi Raef,
That is a strange issue. Here are a couple more ideas you
    could try:
    - Have you tried renaming the file (including suffix)?
    - Have you rebooted?
    - Do you get any error messages when trying to delete, such
    as "Acess Denied"?
    - Is your machine networked? Is it possible someone else has
    the file open?
    - Can the file be moved to another location or put in a
    folder (and then deleted)?
    - Have you tried using the Command Prompt / DOS mode to
    delete the file?
It sounds like it could be a Vista issue so I would look at
the Microsoft Vista forums too. Sorry I do not have an exact
    answer.

  • Help!! I have used an external hard drive on my Macbook Pro to save photos and edit.  Now I have purchased a desktop Apple machine, and new copy of lightroom, however, I cannot see the files on the desktop using the external hard drive.

Hi, I am wondering if someone knows if I can open/(how I see) the files I have saved in Lightroom on my Mac laptop, on my new desktop?

You want to transfer the catalog file to the new desktop using your operating system, and open that by double-clicking on it. Then reconnect the photos to Lightroom (if necessary) by these instructions: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

I have followed the "usual" way to build a pooled VDI desktop using Win7 or Win8 with success, but it fails when I use an image of Win Server 2012 as VM instead.
Am I overlooking something?  Should I need to prepare the image in a different way? (Sysprep differently?)
    Thanks

    Hi,
Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
Can you specify the error which you are facing during VDI setup for server 2012?
I might think that you need to check the memory setting for server 2012, as might happens that due to less memory you can’t setup the VDI setup properly.
Memory: If the Master VM is configured with static memory, it must have at least 1024 MB as startup RAM. If the Master VM is configured with dynamic memory, the maximum RAM must be at least 1024 MB.
Please check beneath article for information.

  • Can I use Type -- 'convert to outline' in Illustrator on Typekit fonts I've 'designated for desktop use'? I've not been able to as of yet.

I'm trying to print vinyl letters for a gallery I'm a member of and love the Cronos Pro regular font. i've designated this for desktop use and created 24 name files at 200pt. The person working with the vinyl asked if I could 'convert to outline' possibly to make the font a bit larger, I don't really know. When I tried to do this, I found that choice grayed out on the type menu. I am wondering if this means the Typekit fonts 'designated for desktop use' simply do not have the permission to be 'converted to outline'.

Cutting always requires proper paths/ outlines. This has nothing to do with the font or large format printing per se. Beyond that there should be no limitation in using fonts - as long as you can mangle them in AI, it means that somewhere those outlines exist internal to the program so the type can actually be rendered. Whatever prevents this may more likely be inherent in how you treat your text. you would have to provide more specific info on that. Either way, ask in the AI forum for more detailed answers.

  • [SOLVED] Slow desktop animation Gnome 3

This only happens with my nvidia gtx 460 with nvidia drivers. My laptop with open source intel works fine. The problem is that when I go to the activities with my notification area (bottom right) populated then the frames per second is horribly slow. When the notification area is empty then it works fine. Since the activities is pivotal to using gnome 3 it is the only thing stopping me from liking it and drives me crazy. I suspect it might be a problem with the way gnome works. Anyone have suggestions?

  • [SOLVED] 'ata3: EH complete' errors only when using GNOME

    Hello,
when I use GNOME as my DE, I start to get 'ata3: EH complete' errors on dmesg. ata3 is where my hard drive is connected to. Usually one would get those messages if the hard drive was going to failure, but the hard drive seems to be OK (smartctl and programs like Palimpsest gives no error).
It seems something related to power management.

This is parameter -W 1 passed to hdparm via pm-tools. (/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/harddrive)
Nothng bad with it. Anyway revise if some parameters are too agressive for your disk, edit values in /etc/pm/power.d/harddrive (new file) based on /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/harddrive.

the cc desktop app is used to install and update cc programs (and a few other thinigs).  but that does not include 'opening' the installed programs.
click your start button or your program files directory to find the acrobat executable to launch acrobat (and any of your other apps, adobe or otherwise).

    Use Oracle's free Sql Developer
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/downloads/index.html
You can just issue a query like this
    SELECT /*csv*/ * FROM SCOTT.EMP
Then just save the results to a file
