Big drop in download speeds

Hi and help me please.
Two days ago the broadband became so slow is was impossible to even load an Internet page.
I rang the bt help desk yesterday and after replacing an adsl filter and moving the hub to the main phone line in I seemed to have my usual connection back.
I have come to use the Internet again today and the speeds have dropped massively again. And is becoming very intermittent with its speeds mostly being under .5mb/s.
ranging from .019 to 17.8mb/s download speeds, the upload speeds have been fairly constant at 0.8 - 0.95mb/s

As additional information  i have only 1 phone socket (the master) and no extensions, nothing has been changed in the set-up and all has been fine for years.

  • Airport WEP Security drops my download speed

I have two routers: one from my ISP (which issues my IP addresses) and an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (which serves as a bridge). My DSL speed is 5MB, which I've been getting with both routers unsecured. I secured the ISP router and nothing changes as far as my speed is concerned, but when I secure the AEBS, my download speed drops to 3MB, a significant drop. Any suggestions how to correct this?

    1 don't use WEP, it's crackable in 30 seconds.
2 don't use two routers unless you have to
3 if you must use two routers, set them to use different networks

  • Yosemite Drops WiFi Download Speed 25%

I really had no problems with Yosemite on my late-2013 MBP Retina...until I did a Speedtest.net test of my Internet speed, in this case over a wi-fi connection to my router.
I routinely get 55-60 Mbit/sec download speeds, but with Yosemite I got only 40-45 Mbit/sec, roughly a 25% reduction. In case it was just a slowdown from my ISP, I checked using wired Ethernet, which showed my usual 55-60 Mbit/sec throughput. Toggling immediately back to wi-fi, the speed went back down to the 40-45 Mbit/range.
I saw others with wi-fi issues under Yosemite and tried the proposed solutions that some said fixed the wi-fi speed (and wi-fi drops) problems--turn off Bluetooth for one. Nothing helped. So I restored the Time Machine backup of my Mavericks installation and...everything wifi-related is back to normal. Same network speeds as before Yosemite.
Lesson learned--always do a full backup before a major OS upgrade just in case.

Please check below video, I have 46080 / 3072 kbps for download /upload... Tried all possible settings combinations without success. Stamina mode never used..

When near router 2-3 m without any obstacles download speed is ok.
Any other my phone (Samsunf S3 for ex.) have no such issue in same location...
Please advise what can cause such issue or it is my Sony hardware specific issue ? How can I solve it ?
This issue is not router specific, because same behavior at home and at work.
just in case following settings I have at home: router in mixed mode, 20/40MHz auto, WMM enabled
Download this and take a look which channel of your router had the best signal and make changes on your router to the best channel within 1-11. Try your speed test again to see if this helps.

  • BT Infinity 2 - sudden 30% drop in download speed ...

On the 11th April my line speed dropped from a great 60Mb/s to just over 40Mb/s for no apparent reason, even though I've experienced reconnects at random times over the last month or so (this may have been an early warning there was an issue). This was logged with the BT Customer support team in India, and after over an hour on the phone going through all the support checks, no fault was found. This was then supposedly escalated to the next level of support and a phone back was promised, and I even recieved a text reminder I was going to get a call back and a text to let me know this was being investigated, however the call did not happen.
A second call to support, a repeat of all the support steps (I'm totally amazed that there is no log of what was done on the previous call) and wow surprise surprise, this did not find anything either, so a call escalation was requested and after nearly 40 minutes of arguing with the support person I was guarranteed a call back from a supervisor, which did happen - Great... well not really as this resulted in yet another set of the same checks, explaining everything yet again and a promise that the line would be monitored for 48 hours and I would be called back at a set time slot, which amasingly did not happen.
So another support call placed, this time to the Tech Support number which was UK answered by a very helpful lady who ran yet more tests and explained that the line has a profile set of around 45Mb/s and when asked if this could be rectified she stated that this can only be done by BT Wholesale who would not do so as the line is within limits! She also suggested turning off all the equipment for at least an hour to let the line reset itself, which I've done even though I had my doubts if this would do anything, to which I was proved correct.
So my plea is for someone to please help in finding out what the issue is and help get it resolved as I work from home on a regular basis and this is proving unreliable, and with 3 teenage kids all busy with homework/games/video and everything else - the issue is now at a desperate level!
And out of interest, my neighbour has a rock solid 60Mb/s connection on the same package, so something specific to my connection I would presume...

And to add to this, the connection is very unstable when it comes to any game play, the delay (lag) is varied and quite bad to the point gameplay is close to impossible.
Line is still capped at 45 Mb/s today ....

  • Sudden drop in download speed and increase in uplo...

I have seen a number of discussions on this on the forum but they all seem to just fade with no resolution.
I have HH3 with Infinity and up to about 4 weeks ago I was delighted with it.  Consistent 21Mbps download and 6Mbps upload.  Then one afternoon the speeds just went sillly - download went down to about 6Mbps and upload to about 10Mbps.  It's been more or less like that ever since.
It's wireless so thought there must be some interference somewhere.  I've installed inSSIDer 3 to check for other router interference and there isn't any (I'm the only one on channel 6).  I've restarted everything a number of times and given it weeks to pace. I've switched off everything that uses the router and even sat right next to it but all to no avail.  The speeds just won't budge from these new low speeds.  I've ethernet attached and run tests and it looks fine - 53.5Mbps upload which is great.   So the problem is somewhere between coming into the house and my laptop.   I thought it might be a problem with my wireless adapter but the problem is the same on another couple of laptops and a desktop.  Even the iPod has slowed down.
I have found an uknown device on the wireless and every time I delete it it just comes back but I did manage to remove it for a few minutes - enough time to run the test - and the speed problem was stilll there.  I've looked at entries for this strange uknown device but as I said above, the discussion just dwindled into nothing without resolution.  I tried the sugggestion to limit access to the internet for this device but it didn't seem to help.  It may be a red herring anyway although the mac address doesn't seem to match anything in my house. An internal device to the router maybe?
Anyway - I'm getting more and more frustrated as I've seen what speed is possible and I want it back !!!
So - any help would be hugely appreciated

Sorry - yep I meant download.  I was in a bit of a hurry and went off piste.
I have been so close to the router with my laptop that I could have rested it on the router.  However, I will go round one more time to see if there is something that we started when it all went wrong such as a new device of some kind.  Clutching at straws but worth a try. It might be that an old device has gone bad so I'll do what I can with those (switching things off).
yep rebooted router a couple of times and allowed a few weeks for it to settle.
inSSIDer shows strength fluctuating between -48 and 50 although I dimly recall that it was -42 when I was getting the good speeds.  Hub claims 130Mbps and device claims 54Mbps.
If all of that fails to work I'lll try resetting to factory settings.  It just seems odd that one minute it's fine then the next it just goes into  snail mode.
Thanks for the sugggestions - very welcome ...

  • Continous major drops in download speeds Using HighSpeed

I have been having this ongoing issue for almost two weeks now with my highspeed connection dropping instantly from 2.294 to as low as 0.034. My web pages won't load,my music won't play and my games have become totally useless now to me. I have contact Verizon multiple times in regaurds to this issue. Last I was told was it was an issue at the Central Office and would be fixed on April 10,2011 by 5pm. Well here it is April 13,2011 and i am still having the same issues.
I have a few other friends in the neighboring area who also have been having the exact same trouble with their connections.
I am going to contact live chat again and request yet another report be made.
We have done all we could think of on MY end-checking wires, restarting modem, settings,pw's,wireless settings, scans for malware/virus,you name it,it's been done.
I am seriously considering leaving Verizon as my provider if the issue is not fixed and soon.

You are making us shoot into the dark. It would help to know at least:
#1 What is the brand and model of your modem?
#2 What is the brand and model of your router?

  • Apple Extreme AC 6th Gen - Wifi slow download speed

My Apple Extreme AC seems to be behaving strangely and wanted to find if anyone else having the same problem, or if anyone know how to fix this.
The router is set to bridge mode and get it's connection from:
FTTH Modem (300Mbps connection) > DLink 865L (primary router) ==fast ethernet== Linksys switch > Apple Extreme AC (WAN port), the Linksys is Gigabit switch.
If I run speedtest using JPERF or WAN (speedtest.net) with a wired connection to my laptop, I get symmetrical download & upload speed of 100Mbps (benchmark).
Doing the same test on WIFI N 5Ghz, laptop is equipped with Intel Centrino 6300 AGN (450Mbps nic), I get a maximum of 45Mbps (download) and 95Mbps (upload). The upload is definitely okay, but what could cause the 50% drop in download speed? Even testing with JPERF i get similar result, except upload went even higher to about 120Mbps.
iPhone 5S connected to AE AC doing speedtest.net also yield similar result, 45Mbps (download), 80Mbps upload.
Doing the similar test (same laptop and same iPhone) with the DLINK 865L (main router) wifi 5Ghz as well, I can get:
Laptop: 150Mbps (download & upload), it varies a bit but not much
    iPhone 5S: 65~80 Mbps download, 80Mbps upload.
Is my AE AC faulty? Can I get Apple to "repair" it although I don't really know what is wrong with it.
I've tried manual radio selection & auto, nothing improves it, only degrade it further
On 2.4Ghz channel, i get half of what i get on 5Ghz, i.e. 20Mbps download, up to 40 Mbps upload

  • Slow BB download speed after 16:30. Works fine in ...

I'm at wits end with BT and the service I receive. I only wish I could choose to pay a 10th of the price for the service I receive. I have tried to use the BT call centre with no avail. The words “chasing ones tail” spring to mind. Hence adding my troubles to the already growing forum.
As the performance is there during the day, this doesn’t sound like a hardware problem, but something that BT is doing on their side when the demand gets high. I can fully understand a drop in download speed, but I think a 10th of the speed is over the top.
    Please can someone help??
     My Problem:
After 16:30 the BB service starts to move at dial-up speeds, but will work fine again after 02:00 am... Yes I am that sad that I have tried to work at that time.

I have an early 2008 8-core Mac pro, 6 GB RAM, running 10.6.8. I'm connected via ethernet to the HITRON CGN3 modem/WiFi router from Rogers. I'm only getting about 20Mbps download, and 10 Mbps upload. However, when I connect my 13" 2011 MacBook Pro (8 GB RAM) to the modem, also running 10.6.8 and using ethernet into the same port, I get about 80Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. Even using WiFi, my MacBook Pro is able to get about 80Mbps download.
My network settings are the same in both my Mac Pro and my MacBook Pro. I should be getting around 60-80Mbps download on my internet plan, but my Mac Pro is underperforming.
Anyone know the solution, or have experienced a similar issue?
    Thanks in advance.

Grant, you sir are a mega genius.
The culprit was the ethernet cable. I plugged the cable I was using for the Mac Pro into my MacBook and experienced a drop in download speed. Upon inspection, the cable had 6 wires. Who knew? This cable worked with my previous modem, and my speeds were pretty good. I just upgraded my internet package, and got this new modem, so I guess the cable is no longer incompatible.
Now that I've replaced the ethernet cable to my Mac Pro, my download speeds are smokin'.
Thanks, man, you saved the day!

  • Fluctuating Download Speed

I have just moved house had had my infinity re-installed.
The router had to go in the hallway as the by engineer didn't wan to install it anywhere else.
This means my ps3 needs to be connected over wireless rather than wired.
I expected a slight drop in wireless connection speed. However, This has dramatically dropped my download speed to 2meg (should be getting 70meg from router).
On the advice of BT, I bought a power line connector for the sockets to Ethernet the PS3.
When I do a speed test tho, I get mixed readings on the ps3 of around 800k dl and then up to 20meg dl.
It changes each time and it's fluctuating like mad.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Speedtesting on the ps3 is the worst you can do as it doesnt give an accurate indication of your speed at all.
Id make a complaint against the engineer who installed it as they are meant to install where you want.

  • Opening second tab, no address causes download speed to drop from 160 kbs to less than 5 kbs and sits there doing nothing, does not happen with IE, why is this

after firefox updated from 27 to 28, when i download a file, play music, watch a video, or run a speed test, normal speed is about 160 kb/s (dsl connection 1.3 Mb/s) - just opening another blank tab (not any address) or try to open another page like google search page, download speed drops to less than 5 kb/s - downloading stops, and second page does not open, why is this happening, it does not happen with internet explorer and the version of IE i have is out of date,
history/cookies all clear automatically when close, i have disabled all add on, run malware, adware searches - show no problem, norton antivirus is up to date, i have spent hours on phone with ATT isp and connection is showing no problem - if i run a speed test it shows good, if i try to run a speed test and open second tab - speed fails and speed test will not even finish, ATT suggested I try the same thing in IE and there is no problem - so it appears to be an issue with Firefox 28

What is the CPU load when this slowdown happens?
Are you using a specific driver in Windows to mange the internet connection that might not get enough processor time to run properly?
It is also possible that other (security) isn't able to do its work and takes additional CPU time.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
You can try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem if starting Firefox in Safe Mode didn't help.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

  • Wireless Router Dropping download speeds

I have a WRT310N router. Ever since upgrading to Snow Leopard, my wireless download speeds decrease the further I get away from the machine. While my signal indicator is full strength, my speed drops from 16mbps download to just around 1-2mbps. I've upgraded to the latest firmware, turned off any potentially conflicting wireless devices (baby monitor, Wii, etc) and nothing seems to effect. Interestingly, my upload speeds remain uneffected.
    Any ideas?

Did you reset the router after upgrading the router's firmware..If not then, reset the router and reconfigure it from the scratch.

  • WRT110 drops download speed if I use ESET NOD32 Antivirus

My PC: Pentium4, Windows XP SP3 Home Edition.
D-Link dsl modem, Linksys router WRT110
    DSL download speed 15 Megabits/sec.
    WLAN turned off.
One PC connected to the router.
Without the router and with NOD32 Antivirus installed on my PC:
    Download speed is 15 Megabits/sec.
With the router and with NOD32 installed on my PC:
Download speed drops down to 2 Megabits/sec.
If I uninstall NOD32, everything is OK,
the download speed is 15 Megabits/sec again
    (with the router).
    What should I do?

    What should I do?
I connected only one PC to the router with an ethernet cable
and turned off the wireless connection during the tests.
The tests were performed several times. But I got the same results.
