Big grey bar & grid emblazoned across Quicktime movies

Hi,
I'm having an odd problem I've never had in nine years of editing video on Macs.
I recently got a new MacBook. I had been using an iBook G3, which was running Final Cut Pro 5.
I have Final Cut Express on my new MacBook.
Now I understand Express won't open Pro projects. But projects which I had saved as Quicktime Movies will not display properly on the MacBook either. When I view the clips, they have a grey grid and grey bar superimposed over them.
When I drag these clips in Express or iDVD this gray bar / grid pattern remains.
Even unaltered Quicktime clips which I had uploaded using Final Cut Pro are displayed in this manner.
Is this a sign I need a more sophisticated version of Quicktime, or do I need to upgrade to the latest Intel version of Final Cut Pro? Or is it some other problem?

Quicktime will play these clips correctly, but Final Cut Express and iDVD 7.0.4 will not.
Yet the older versions of iDVD on my iBook -- 7.0 and 6.0.4 -- had no problem with these clips.

So, let me try and explain...
I have recorded gameplay footage of my game directly from my Mac screen using Quicktime's Record Screen option. I've tried recording both in fullscreen mode (with my game also running in fullscreen mode) and a section of the screen by dragging the mouse to select a 640X960 box (with my game running in windowed mode which is displayed at 640x960 resolution).
This initial recording direct from the screen displays fine, both when I view it in windowed mode and when I view it fullscreen, with the height of the game stretching to the full height of the video area but obviously with big black borders to either side in fullscreen mode (as it's basically iPhone ratio in portrait mode).

The problem is when I try to import the movie into iMovie, mess around with some fade-ins and music and stuff and then output the edited movie via iMovie...
When I then try to view this outputted movie in windowed mode on certain sites (Kickstarter) my game footage doesn't take up the full height of the video and instead floats in the middle with big black bars at the top and bottom, which I don't want. It's fine when I go fullscreen but the problem is that when I load this video into Kickstarter it shows the non-fullscreen view of the video with this big black border and it looks really amateur.
This is what Kickstarter shows in windowed mode i.e. the way you see Kickstarter videos by default when you press Play; unless I go fullscreen and then it takes up the full heigh of the view.
Note: Windowed mode actually looks fine when viewed directly on my Mac but I know it's not Kickstarter that is causing the issue because I can see in the thumbnail preview on my Mac that the video is somehow encoded with the big black bars at the top and bottom. Also, I uploaded the unedited videos to Kickstarter just to check and they display fine. So it's definitely iMovie that is adding these annoying black borders at the top and bottom for whatever reason (and I'm not intentionally scaling the video down in iMove or anything like that as far as I know). I also can't use the unedited footage however because it has no sound and no transitions etc.
Does anyone know what night be causing this and how to get rid of it.

You are lucky to see anything - iMovie 5 is not really compatible with Snow Leopard, which only supports iMovie 6 and above.
Snow Leopard only runs on Intel Macs. iMovie 5 was never written, AFAIK, for Intel, just for the PPC Macs they had in those old days!

It should be in the Users/ Shared folder.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Note the option to check and repair Library Permissions

Large grey bar across screen on custom *.desktop session

hi all,
as a bit of experimentation i set a custom session that starts no window manager, but just launches Chromium-browser.
it worked fine (and blindingly fast too) but for some reason there is a thick (60-80 pixel high) default-grey bar across the bottom of the screen.
anyone know why?

In short, there isn't. Not without a window manager.
An X server does not have a concept of "maximized" window, it only cares about rendering it's content [usually] in a box with externally specified geometry. That geometry is passed to the X server by the application itself or by other means, like window manager.
You may try to run Chromium with the --geometry=XxY+0+0 parameter if Chromium supports it. Or you can look for some other ways to set an X window geometry. I'd say the easiest way would be using a window manager. I guess you'd like to go for something minimal, like twm or matchbox.

HELP. Quicktime Movies from FCP with DVCPro = Black Boxes across image.

When exporting my HD movie from Final Cut Pro (5) using either Quicktime Movie or Quicktime COnversion with the footage's native setting of DVCPro HD 720p the resulting movie has thick black rectangles on the left and right sides and one right in the middle.
Is it a codec issue?
Please help.

It is a 16X9 CROP, not some sort of anamorphic distortion... so just choose that, and export...
If you set it to be 320X180 THAT will distort it. It should start as 320X240. The crop then results in 320X180. If it's new software it's Compressor 3.

Quicktime mov too big

Hi all again - I have a Quicktime MOV file on my iMac which is reported to be 2.6GB in Finder. When I put it to iDVD- it is reported as 4.16GB and iDVD refuses to burn it on a single layer DVD. Can anyone help me understand this. The Apple Theme is only 120MB in iDVD and there is nothing else added
Would I have more luck with Toast as I find iDVD unreliable and prone to crashing as well & would Toast resolve the sizing issue and compress to fit a SL disk as other products do?

The 2.6GB size of the .mov file is irrelevant. What is relevant is the length in time of the video. iDVD can fit about 2 hours of video on a single-layer DVD disk; up to about 4 hours on a dual-layer DVD; and less in each case to the extent you use themes, menus & put other stuff in the project.
What is the +codec used+ and +length in time+ of your .mov file? Open it in QuickTime, then do +Window > Show Movie Inspector.+ Tell us what it says for +format & fps.+ Then, in the QT player window, move the playhead to the very beginning of the video; then see what it says for the length of the video (hh:mm:ss) at the right side of the playline (it will be a negative number).

How did I remove the thick grey bar across the top?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Ipad screen has a massive grey bar through it??

I turned on my Ipad this morning, and it seemed to be working just fine, except that there was a thick, pixilated grey bar right through my screen. I tried restarting it several times, but nothing changed. I connected it to power and it didn't go away. I haven't tried connecting it to my computer yet, as my computer is broken at the moment (not my fault, I'm just really unlucky) but I'm pretty sure this is a hardware problem, so that wouldn't help anyway. I haven't dropped my ipad, put it in heat or humidity, got water on it, put it in extreme cold or treated my ipad roughly. It stays in a case safely on my desk whenever its not in use. I have only had it for just over two months, so I am very annoyed that it has broken after such a short time. Anyone have any advice?

Well mrdoozie, you're lucky. I bought an I pad in dec 2010 and had the same issue (grey,black bar about 2 inches thick just above of centre across the screen with multicolored thin lines in some place inside the bar) develop about 20 days ago. I took it to the apple authorized service centre in mumbai, India and they said apple has not authorized anyone in India to open it and repair and given its a hardware issue and warranty expired in december 2011 they can replace it for a cost of Rs 23,000 eq to $ 480!
I did not think it was worth it. First I did not expect apple to make hardware that could develop such kind of issues. And if it such a regular thing then they should repair or replace if it's not the fault of the user. .
So I took it back and decided I will buy a new galaxy tab instead. With samsung, don't have this kind of support issues in India.
I can't use this I pad because all the messages come in the centre and do not move up or down so get covered by he bar.
I should have realized this early when within 3 months my adapter got burnt. I ignored it. For those who may think it may be a voltage issue in my house, I charge my iPhone thro the same socket with the same chargers

Grey bar through QT thunbnail, QT not working in ProApps!

I'm on the latest Macbook Pro 2.66Ghz Intel I7
OSX 10.6.3
Quicktime 10.0 (113)
My quicktime movies all display with a grey bar through the preview thunbnail on the desktop and on my external drive! And when trying to edit some footage inside Final Cut Pro 7 I get speratic issues in the canvas including Grey freezes, Distorsion, gliches.
I put the external drive on another mac and the files are ok so it leaves me to believe it's just within this mac. Also the issues pop up in Imovie so it's not FCP either. It's Quicktime problem!
I'm an advanced user and have done all the usual fixes including disk utility, reset PRAM, trash prefs.....
Can anyone please help me?

I have flash player and it works fine, but the affordable affiliates site wants to play the movie in QT.
It is not just with these two sites. QT Player plays the video but there is no sound on the video, and when QT loads to play an mp3 there is no sound.
Can anyone help me?

Embedded Quicktime movies and DOM layering?

Is there any way to overlay something on top of a quicktime movie in a web page without the quicktime movie showing through it?

I have a low res and high res version of a trailer where clicking the high res link overlays the movie in the a thickbox on the page. depending on the browser, the low res movie with show through the layer.
I've been searching the web for a solution but the best one I've found is to remove the low res movie with javascript when the high res link is clicked. not exactly ideal but doable if that's the only thing that works.
Is this a general problem with the quicktime plugin and dom layering?

I'm sorry for saying that David, but you are not right in this point. You would have right if you say that every web page embedded object (flash, quicktime, activx, etc.) has a parameter (wmode, window mode) which is set to true by default. BUT if you are using flash object (flash video) you can set the wmode parameter - as far as I know there are no other embeddable objects which accept this parameter.
And I think it's a bug, and not in browsers but (in this case) in Quicktime - I can't understand why Apple can't solve this problem. It's one key problem why most web developers (neither I) can't use QT on more complex web pages or in web applications. Easy examples:
__ you can't drop a popup over a QT video (you can do it with a Flash video)
__ you can't embed QT into fixed header/footer web pages with scrolling content (it overflows the header/footer
__ you can't put any navigation over QT objects (imagine the situation: I'm working on an UI which has self slide-bar to navigate within a video, you can add/remove annotations, logs, messages etc. and not for just one video but for more synchronized ones > you I'll need a scroll-bar to display all of these, but if you scroll the videos 'under' the navigation hides the navigation...)
So to conclude this short message: In my opinion this is a big problem with Quicktime, and I'm wondering why such a big company like Apple can't manage this problem (probably the web 'market' of QT is not big enough - in fact this is an issue why web developers don't like QT embeds...)

Exporting QuickTime Movie seems to re-render everything

I've done a search thru the forum and couldn't find anything covering this topic. Though I'm sure we're not alone on this problem. In the last couple of months a some of our editors have noticed a change when we export a QuickTime movie from FCP. In spite of having all our elements rendered (all render bars show either blue or grey) when we go to export a standard QuickTime Movie the "Writing Audio and Video…" task bar comes up and instead of zipping thru crawls. Most noticeably it slows over any clips with filters or different formats.
This is new and not cool! Previously when everything is rendered it just spits it out. Now were taking MUCH longer to export QTs.
We thought that perhaps the project files we're using are corrupt. So I created brand spanking new projects and started everything from scratch. It still happens.
We're outputing everything as AJA Io- NTSC US SMPTE 10 Bit Uncompressed 29.97fps.
Any help (including pointing us to a page that already covers this) would be greatly appreciated.

There's only one reason FCP would want to write new media, you're exporting to a slightly different codec than than you are using in your sequence. Over the last few months, something quite subtle has changed in your pathway, not your workflow. New AJA software perhaps? Dunno, never used one.
Your render settings are fine, they don't apply to the export. Your project files are not corrupt, different set of symptoms for that issue.
Lots of folks use the term "export" synonymously for several unrelated functions. Check your export settings carefully and then check them again. Get Info or item properties on one fo the exported movies and compare those specs carefully against your sequence settings.

Large Quicktime movie to fit i-DVD

Hi people,
I have a very quick, and slightly embarassing question...
I have a movie that is approx 85 minutes in length, shot on DV PAL. When I export it as a Quicktime movie, ready to burn on i-DVD, the overall file size is 18.05GB
i-DVD then compresses it down to 5.75GB, which is way too big for a 4.7GB DVD, which is what I need to burn it onto.
What I need to do is reduce the file size by a few GB. I've used the Custom setting and reduced the quality to approx 15% but the file size is still coming out at between 17.5GB and 18.05GB.
I've tried so many settings - adjusted frame rate, sound, quality etc and still I'm not able to reduce the file in order for it to be accepted on a 4.7GB disk.
Can someone please help and advise how I can reduce the file size.

no hair pulling, please ... the stuff might end up in your DVD burner and then you're back to square one...
as i said, leave the movie as it is - iDVD is only interested in LENGTH (min)
i would recommend starting a new project. set the encoder settings first.
you'll find the encoder settings in your iDVD preferences under general. set them to best quality, this will automatically uncheck background encoding.
next import your movie and set up the menu. then go to the customize panel and click the status tab. iDVD will show you how much space each component is taking up on your disc. if everything is fine, choose file > save as disc image from the menu and get some coffee...
post back if there are problems (sure hope not)

Quicktime movie export from Flash CS3 is skipping frame.

When I try to export Quicktime movie from Flash CS3, the
resulting mov file is skipping frames. i.e.: The movie is showing
frame number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 7, 10, 11, 12, 12, 12, 15
etc...
As you can see the frame number 7 is repeated 3 times and
frame 8 and 9 are nowhere to be found.
The last configuration I used is 960x540, Sorenson video 3
medium quality, 25 fps, keyframe every 25 frames. 6400 kbits/s.
I tried various configurations,with different codecs and even
with keyframe all frames and I always get simillar problems.
Anyone have an idea what is going on, and how to fix this?

The QT exporter in Flash is honestly my least favorite
feature - not the feature itself but how it
works (or how it doesn't work in some cases). For me it is
almost unusable unless you have a very
short timeline, small stage, lower frame rate - like AS
generated effects or something - otherwise,
for true frame accuracy to video output - it is not reliable
enough and not fast enough for any real
world production environment.
So typically for me - I love SWF2Video (www.flashants.com) as
it takes any SWF and makes it into an
AVI that is frame accurate no matter what the frame rate is -
quite incredible - enough so that I
always felt it should have been bundled with Flash (as well
as Wacom tablets).
Harmony is an incredible product - as is SOLO and TBS (Toon
Boom mStudio) - each of those programs
are dedicated animation programs designed for output to video
- Flash has a lot of hats to fill and
it was never really designed for animation to video even
though many of us have found it suitable
for all intents and purposes as an animation program for full
production.
But all in all - the quicktime exporter doesn't really
deliver how we would expect it too I am sorry
to say - I only hope it works as well as it does on the Mac
(Mac users could always choose to export
to Quicktime Video but not PC users).
For now if I am exporting to video I keep it all on the
timeline or nested in Graphic symbols or use
the SWF2Video tool.

Error message when trying to import Quicktime movies

All of the sudden, I'm getting this weird error message when trying to import various Quicktime movies. I've never seen this message before:
File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown
Any thoughts why this might be happening? Any input would be appreciated.

I now see that two of them have been encoded using the AAC, Sorenson Video 3 codec which is not one I've seen before so I suspect that would be it.
The other one I'm having trouble with is encoded using Integer (Big Endian), Animation. I know I've seen the Integer (Big Endian) codec before so do you think that because it's animation that's a problem? I imported several other uncompressed files that were encoded with Integer (Big Endian) that worked fine so that's my suspicion.
