Big headaches! Can't get stuff to work!! Help!!!

I have chased so many bunny trails trying to fix so many things that now I am just dazed and confused. Let me start at the beginning because now I don't even know what's important and what isn't!
1) moved from dial-up to wireless internet service with a D-Link wired router.
2)Win98 & Limewire worked great, but was concerned about no firewall protection.
3)PC crashed; hard drive wiped clean & reinstalled with WinXP. All worked great.
4)Wired D-link router to new WRT54GS ver.6 and wired the Linksys router directly to my pc. WinXP worked great. Limewire-not so much.
5)Followed portforward.com instructions to set up static IP and port forwarding for Limewire. Then it worked fine.
6)Tried to set up kids' old Win98 pc with WMP54GS (not compat w/Win98) and WMP54G adapter. Never could get either pc to find the network. Gave up!
7)Drilled holes and wired the Win98 directly to the WRT54GS. Problems began!!
8) My WinXP works fine, but Limewire won't connect at all. I've tried everything under the sun to get it to work and now I've tweaked so many things I have no idea what's right and what's wrong!
9)Kids' Win98 will connect to internet and open some pages (usually with errors and only red x's for graphics) and won't open other pages entirely. It won't open Microsoft.com at all so I can't try to download any fixes from there. It will open the Java update download page, but just hangs on the download. We think the Java download problem is caused by an old version of FlashPlayer, but we can't open the FlashPlayer download page. Very frustrating because it will open unnecessary pages like Ask.com, eBay.com and MySpace but won't open the pages I need to actually make stuff work! As for MySpace and Hotmail, it will open the home page but when you try to login it says Page Cannot Be Displayed.
The whole point of all of this was to get faster connection & downloads and to get the kids off of my computer and onto their own. Now all I have is frustration!!!
Like I said I've tried every "fix" under Linksys, PortForward and Limewire that I can find and now I just think everything is messed up and I don't know what to undo before I try to do anything else!!
Is there any hope?

wow... a lot of problem you have in there... i would like to recommend that you use only one router. because if you have more than one, you need to configure the ip addresses of the different routers. about the LAN-LAN and LAN-WAN connection that the network administrator asked, it is just a matter of "where you have connected the cable from one router to the other"
LAN-WAN
- the first end of the ethernet cable is connected to the numbered port/ regular port (not the internet port) of the router, and the other end is connected to the internet port. simply it means connecting a regular port to the internet port of the other router.
- in this type of connection, the ip address of the first router should be (just an example) 192.168.1.1 and the ip address of the second router should be 192.168.2.1.
- both routers are dhcp enabled
LAN-LAN
- the first end of the cable is connected to the regular port of the first router, and the other end to the regular port also. (not to the internet port)
- in this type of connection, the ip address of the first router should be (just an example) 192.168.1.1 and the ip address of the second router should be 192.168.1.2.

about your limewire, you just need to do port forwarding or triggering on your router (recommended to have only one router). you need to know which ports to open before doing the port forwarding or triggering. please refer to these:

also try decreasing your MTU on your router. decreasing MTU is only done whed speed is very slow, you can not access secured websites (such as microsoft.com), can not download large files. this is not done always so be careful. refer to this:

1. Use only one router, preferrably the Linksys router that you have. Since it has both wired and wireless capability.
2. Open ports for limewire on your router.
3. Decrease MTU not less than 1200.
4. Upgrade your pcs to windows 2000 or xp.

Can't get titles to work-Help!!!!!

I am using iMovie 5.0.2 and Im having trouble with my titles.
When I try to insert my titles to my timeline it will not load as it was expected to.
If I create the title in the text space provided (ie: My Titles) and then preview it, it works fine in the main viewer window - but when I "Grab" the "T" in the title window and drag it to the timeline, it appears very briefly (about 0.1 of a second) and then disappears !
The same thing is happening with my transitions - I tried to use the slow frame FX and the clip accepts it for an instant, then the clip reverts back to it's normal speed again!
Can anyone help please?

I'm holding the "T" until it gets onto the timeline, then letting it go! - But as I mentioned, it doesn't even stay there . . . . it simply does not want to sit on the timeline at all!
I don't get a chance to see the red bar at the bottom!
Looks to me like a bug or something . . . . I was looking for the cache files in the package contents/info of iMovie, so I could import the clips from my previous movie, . . . . . guess what . . . . the cache file with the .dv clips isn't there!
I may try re-installing iMovie . . . . is it on the DVD which came with my iMac G5 ?

I STILL can't get Bridge to work, Help

I have had Photoshop CS2 installed and activated for months. However, I have never gotten Bridge to work.
I get the apparently common, "Adobe Bridge cannot be used at this time because of licensing restrictions. You must have installed and launched at least one other Adobe application to use Adobe Bridge." I have consulted TechNote 331871, and have tried its suggestions. Solution 1, Photoshop CS2 IS activated. Solution 2, everything IS in its default location. Solution 3, removing and reinstalling Bridge doesn't help. Solution 5, I have removed and reinstalled Photoshop CS2 twice. (I have not removed the activation)
Which leaves Solution 4. Whenever I try to rerun the Common File Installer, I get "Setup has detected that a newer version of this product is already installed. Setup will now terminate.", and it does.
I have had uninstalled Adobe Premiere Elements 4, thinking that might be the problem. I also have Elements 3.0 and 6.0 installed. I have tried uninstalling 6.0 to no avail.
Anyone have any idea what may be going on, and what I might do next?

G5 Tower, replaced hard drive and now can not get it to work- HELP

My G5 (tower) crashed hard & after a trip to the Genius Bar at my local Mac Store I found out the hard drive was dieing.
The Mac person fixed some problem files & told that I could replace the hard drive. I bought a 350 GB SATA 3.5in hard drive and placed it in the second slot in the tower. I then used time machine & backed up the hard drive to the second slot (after I backed up on an external hard drive- just to be safe).
I removed the hard drives & placed the new one in the A slot. When I turned on the computer I had the ? folder. I turned off & restarted holding the option key and got two folders, one with a turn back arrow & a rt facing arrow. Clicked either did nothing. Does any1 know what I am doing wrong?? If so please let me know. Much appreciated.

Did you reset your PRAM?

Hold down all four keys as the mac starts up and wait for the chimes to ring twice. Then let the machine start up as usual.
If it works be sure to check your date and time settings (the system will tell you)
You can also start up from your system disk holding down the c key as it starts-- go past the language screen and open disk utilities from the menu bar run disk repair and then repair permissions. Set your startup disk to your new drive.
Hopefully that will take care of the problem.

Can't get game to work HELP

I down loaded SAT Prep Mathematics 2008 last night and sync it all onto my I pod that night to play but when i clicked on it to play, it came up with "this game cannot be played" and something about, connect your ipod back to itunes and reinstall the game. So i did but it still kept coming up with the same Error screen, and so i went on to this website and looked through all the Q and A about ipod games and tried everything and nothing worked.
please help.

Can't get X to work properly (ATI AIW 9800)

I have a few problems. My first problem is this. The dpi was messed up when i first install, so i thought no big deal, I'll just go and configure the defaultserverargs setting in the startx script to "-dpi 75". This does not seem to work. Secondly,I can't get gnome to work as my default window manager. I put this line in my .xinitrc file in my home directory:
exec gnome-session
I also tried this:
exec /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session
My last problem is that when i try to install the ati fglrx drivers with the stock kernel arch package but whenever the fglrx module is called, it says that the module doesn't exist. One thing i might mension which might be of importance is that i compiled a custom kernel during install without SMP and preemtivity so i could use my rt2500 wireless card. [SOLVED] I can't get virtual hosts working. What's wrong?

What I've decided to do is try to set up each domain name in the user folder to whom it belongs (for example: /home/username/somedomain.com/htdocs). I can't get it to work though. I keep getting an error saying that there's no index file (although there is) or that the location isn't readable (although it is). I'm trying to make it so that if the domain name matches with a virtual host section in httpd-vhosts.conf that a specific DocumentRoot will be loaded for that domain, etc. But, if the domain name points to my server but doesn't match, then I want the default location to work. I can't seem to make this work.

So, for example, I want it to be so that if I visit http://45.117.5.40 that it'll show the stuff ftom /srv/http/default/htdocs but if the domain name matches somedomain.com then I want the server to show the content from /home/normaluser/somedomain.com/htdocs.
What currently happens is that if I visit http://45.117.5.40 or somedomain.com, they both show the same content from /srv/http/default/htdocs.
If I comment out the first VirtualHost section, then everything stops working and I see the default "Access forbidden!" message.
What am I doing wrong?

I fixed it. In case any newbs come across this, I had to add a new <Directory> section for the DocumentRoot of the virtual host. Simply adding the VirtualHost entry in the vhosts file isn't enough.
For example, for the "somedomain.com" vhost in the example above to work, I added this to http.conf:
#This must match with the same location as DocumentRoot in httpd-vhost.conf.

Can't get Export to work in iPhoto 6.0

I can't get Export to work. I haven't been a big iPhoto user but just upgraded from ver. 2.0.1 to 6.0 four days ago. Never used export before; however, going through the '06 tutorial I have tried and failed several times (but dragging to the desktop works). I select a photo and File-->Export and the "Export Photos" dialog comes up. I hit the "File Export button at the top" per iPhoto Help. Nothing happens; the File Export pane remains blank. Hitting "Export" doesn't work either. Only the Cancel button works. I have a relatively small library: about 200 from before the upgrade and 100 imported using the new alias feature. Would appreciate any advice.

Hi Walt,
did you use an iPhoto plugin before? Maybe you have an outdated flickr plugin that needs to be updated or disabled.
Do a "get info" on iPhoto.app and see if you have that installed.
The plugins are listed at the bottom of the "get info" panel

Can't get Export to work

I'm relatively new to Fireworks. I created a small image map, but when I try to export the image and html to Dreamweaver, I get a message a message saying "Could not complete your request - The file was not found." I've tried Export, Export Wizard, rebooting, and a bunch of other stuff - but still can't get it to work. I'm using the Trial version (but it's the same as the regular version, right?) on a Mac running SnowLeopard.
Other than this, and an issue with the Text function that I posted about in a different thread, I like Fireworks a lot and was planning to buy it - so I hope there's a way to get Export to work with images/html so it won't be a showstopper. I'm assuming I must be doing something wrong.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to upload the file to you. Everything I try gives the "file not found" message (but the file is right there on my screen, in front of me as I'm getting this message), so I don't know how to get it to you. The only way that I've found to get the file "out" of Fireworks is to save it as a .jpg file (which of course eliminates the "hotspots" and associated html), and then open it in Mac's Preview utility and also in Dreamweaver. I could send you the .jpg file if you'd like, but since it no longer contains the hotspots and there's no html, I'm not sure that's too useful.
I tried adding the clickable hotspots back in with Dreamweaver, and that worked and also produced usable html.
I noted in a separate forum message that the Text function has also stopped working for me, although it was fine initially. However, I can no longer add text, and when I try to edit existing text, the existing text disappears from my image.
Has my copy of Fireworks somehow become corrupted? Should I reinstall? Other than these issues, I like the product a lot and would like to be able to use it.

Can't get iphoto to work after tampering with library in Finder

I think I made a big mistake when I tampered with the iphoto library in Pictures in Finder.
Now I can't get iphoto to work. All the pictures are gone in iphoto, the spaces are there but they are blank.
When I open iphoto it goes into the mode (little spinning wheel appears) where I have to "force quit".
Any supggestions on what I can do? Thanks.

The list that shows is just data files and such.
You can burn the entire iPhoto Library folder.
You can burn each Year folder or any other variation.
This is my workflow. The reason I do it the way I describe is because I want a backup of just the photos and video clips I take so I can copy them to a partition of my external drive and burn them to disc. On the other partition I backup my entire users folder
When iPhoto 5 first came out I really think it was programmed to import the smaller 30 sec video clips that cameras were taking at the time. Since then, digital cameras, at least my Canon S2 can take clips as large as your memory card can hold. The first time I tried to download my images and movie clips with my new camera, iPhoto stalled at the movie clips. I wasn't going to take any chances messing up my iPhoto Library so I started using Image Capture to download all my images and Movie clips. I actually like doing it this way a lot better. My movie clips are downloaded into my Movies folder where I then put them in a dated folder.
My photos are downloaded into my Pictures folder, where I then put them in a dated folder. I import the dated folder into iPhoto. I also keep all dated folders from photo downloads in the Pictures folder till I get enough Movie folders and Photo folders to fill a DVD. I burn them and then delete them from the hard drive.
This way I have the photos in iPhoto and I also have just the photos backed up to DVD.
The Movies I keep on the hard drive in their dated folders until I use all the clips for my iMovie projects for the Year. I then make sure they are all burned to DVD, then I delete those from my hard drive.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.

Backing up your iPhoto Library
1. Burn the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder to a CD or DVD
This method will give you a burned iPhoto Library folder that can be copied back to your computer to replace a damaged library. You can also use this method to backup an old library when you want to create a new Library to use as your current library.
insert a blank CD into your internal or external CD-RW drive and copy the iPhoto library to the CD icon on your desktop. When you drag the CD icon to the Trash/Eject button in the Dock, you are given the option to burn the CD. Click Burn and the CD is created. To burn a DVD backup of your digital images, use a DVD and a SuperDrive-equipped Mac
The easiest way to burn an iPhoto Library folder in the Finder that is larger than 4.7 gig to fit on one DVD is to burn sections of the folder.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop
Double click the folder to open it.
Drag each Year folder to the desktop.
You should be left with the iPhoto Library folder containing all the data files, and the Year folders.
Combine whatever year folders that amount closest to a DVD burn size on one DVD. Make sure that you have burned all the Year folders, then the iPhoto Library folder with all the data files.
If you ever need to use this backup, insert the DVDs into your computer and copy the folders to the desktop. Put all the Year folders back into the iPhoto Library folder. Then put the iPhoto Library folder back into the Pictures folder.

2. Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library to an external drive formated for a Mac. Do not use this as your only back up as the external can also go bad.

4.Creating your own CDs and DVDs for viewing in iPhoto
This method is a great way to back up Albums of older photos or even your entire library if it is small enough to fit on a DVD. This method will give you a library that will mount within iPhoto in the source column to be viewed. To import any images from this library they need to be dragged into your library in the source column.
If you just want to backup the images in your library:
1) Within iPhoto select the images, albums or rolls you want to backup. Go to Share>Export and export them to a newly created folder on the desktop. Follow the directions in the next link.
Creating a CD or DVD to be viewed in Windows or by a photo processing company
1.. If you backed up the entire iPhoto Library by burning within iPhoto or burning the folder in the Finder, make sure the burned copy is a good working copy before you delete the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. You delete the iPhoto Library in the finder by dragging it to the trash when iPhoto is closed. When you next launch iPhoto it will create a new empty library for you to start anew.
2. If you burned just the images, be aware that that is all you are archiving. No metadata will travel with the images such as comments, keywords, etc.
You can then delete those images within iPhoto by highlighting them and hitting the delete key, then empty iPhoto's trash. Do this often and in groups so iPhoto will not choke on too many images.

I have now purchased a new macbook Pro and want to begin to use Mail rather than Entrourage.
I have Entrourage on my new computer but i can't get it to transfer my information to the the Mail program

How can i get this to work. I can receive on Mail, but i can't send.

check your outgoing port settings and make sure it's using a specific port and not the default port, also you might want to check to see if it is using SSL, TLS or any other encryption. Verify the setting from your old machine setup.

If it's showing the red disabled screen due to incorrect passcodes then you may need to put the iPad into recovery mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 - you should then be able to reset the iPad via your computer's iTunes and restore/resync your content to it
