Big memory leak in Snow Leopard?  Active memory out of control!

I just restarted my computer about 40 minutes ago to solve this problem once and my active memory is already out of control.  Activity monitor says there's over 5.2 GB of active memory, but looking at the process list there's not nearly that much.  I'll add a link to a screenshot of my activity monitor.  I have run absolutely nothing that is not in the list currently.  Any idea what's going on?

Well, thanks for your concern, but I won't miss you if you don't post another reply.
I did some watching and I have a little more info.  I kept activity monitor open and kept an eye on it after another reboot.  The apps I had open were: FCP, Compressor, Safari (open to gmail in the background and this thread in another tab), and iTunes.  Nothing else.
At some point, without me doing anything specific to prompt it, the active memory (yellow) jumped from ~1.3GB all the way up to ~5.5 in the span of about 5 or 6 seconds.  When I say I didn't do anything, I mean I happened to be doing something on my phone when I noticed it.  I suspect it has something to do with Safari, but even when I shut every program down, the active memory stays at around 5-5.5 GB.  The only thing I can do to get it down is to reboot.

  • ATI HD 3870 & 10.6.2 Snow Leopard - no TV-out !!!

    Ok,
    Mac Pro 2.8ghz with 16gb RAM & HD 3870
Upgraded to Snow Leopard, no TV-out. Downgraded back to Leopard via Time Machine and TV-out is back. Someone else said they cleaned the contacts and it works ... doesn't make sense.
Anyone having problems with the HD 3870 and Snow Leopard?
    Aaron

    Bump,
Anybody. We use this for our live Video Announcements at our school and would love to benefit from Snow Leopard as BoinxTv is now optimized for it.
Please, anybody else using the TV-out on the HD 3870 under 10.6.2?

  • Try to install Snow Leopard says memory too low

I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard for my MacBook Pro.  It says I do not have enough memory.
I am not a big gamer nor have lots of software.  I have a some movies (iTunes 36 GB) and lots of photos (13.8 GB).
    1)  I assumed that the new OS would overwrite the old so I would not need huge amounts of available memory.
    2)  The system says I have 185 GB memory but only 1.8 GB available
    3) I assume my big player software is OFFICE, and the usual mac stuff that comes on all the computers.  Office is under 1 GB and even less on the pre-installed software.
I just can not find add up to 183 GB used anywhere - how can I find / discover why it always says I have not enough memory and where the rest of my memory is?
    Thank you

You can download and install the free OmniDiskSweeper:
    http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/
This will scan your system and give you a good graphical representation of what files are eating up your hard drive space.  A common thing that can eat up space is podcasts unless you have set iTunes to delete them after you listen to them.... but your space can be taken up by just about anything.

  • 3 Beep when i try to boot Snow Leopard (after memory and sad upgrade)

    Good night,
I have a Macbook Pro Later 2011 with Yosemite installed and today i tried to upgrade memory and SSD.
    Memory: 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 (2x8) Corsair 11-11-11-30 1.35v
SSD: Corsair 120GB Sata 3 Force GT
After installation of my new gear, i tried to install OS X Snow Leopard through DVD and i get this 3 beep when boot start.
So i reinstalled the original hard drive, keep the new 16gb and started correctly.
Tried boot DVD again with the original hard drive and new 16gb but the 3 beep continues...
Then i removed the 16gb, but still doing this 3 beep stuff when i try boot from DVD.
I tried all combinations with new and old hardware but nothing more works...
I have changed the slots with both, the 16gb and old 4gb.
    Could be the DVD corrupted?
Now im running my Yosemite with the original hard drive and the new 16gb memory without any issue.
Im already do the memory test nothing wrong appear in results
    My configuration:
MacBook Pro (17 polegadas, Final de 2011)
Processador 2,4 GHz Omte; Cpre i7
    Memória 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Gráficos Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    Could anyone help me plz?
    ps. sorry for my english

The DVD's too old for that Mac. If you need to install an OS on it, connect it to the Internet and start it up with the Option, Command, and R keys held down.

  • Severe memory problems in Snow Leopard

This is actually happening on two computers, one with the latest Snow Leopard PC, one with the latest Snow Leopard Server. On both of them, certain applications seem to use huge amounts of RAM if left open for a long time:
On the PC, FireFox uses 1.4 GB of RAM after a while, eating all but 90 MB of the available RAM. Safari and a few other apps also use a lot of RAM compared to Leopard but do not seem to eat all of it. This is Snow Leopard specific because the same FireFox on my Leopard iMac works fine.
On the server, Finder slowly eats all of the RAM. In a few days, it takes all of it and slows down the services. I have to force quit it to make it use less. Before force quitting, it took 1.5 GB of RAM, then one I force quit, it took 90 MB.
I found that putting stuff into 32-bit mode fixes most issues, but I can't put Finder into 32-bit mode. Also, in both modes, the PC completely crashes (and shuts down) from Flash plugins on certain news sites while watching videos, and the server's Safari crashes when watching Flash videos. I have reinstalled Flash on both.

I've heard of Firefox and Chrome eating lots of RAM with a lot of heavy tabs opening and closing, something about allocating and then not giving the RAM back or some other thing.
With 64 bit processors having access to huge amounts of RAM (past the 4GB 32 bit barrier) it's looking like there is a silent war going on to see who can grab the most RAM.
Clearly there is huge performance potential in RAM, the more a program like Chrome or Firefox has, the more faster it will and can do anything.

  • Type "purge" in Terminal and get:   -bash: purge: command not found   Is there another built-in command to clear memory leaks?   want to clear memory periodically

I have 10.6.8.  When I type "purge" in Terminal I get:   -bash: purge: command not found   Is there another built-in command to clear memory leaks?   I have FreeMemory (works well) and considering FreeMemory Pro, to clear memory periodically, say every 20 minutes, or preferably when a threshold is reached, say when only 100MB is available.

To get purge to work you need to install Xcode from Optional Installs on the 10.6 install DVD. Also be sure you install CHUD Tools with it.
But running purge or anything like it is pointless if within a short period of time the VM just grows back again. Sounds like you need more RAM.
Where are the memory leaks? Just because the VM reaches a certain size doesn't necessarily mean it's from a memory leak.

  • Snow leopard Active directory account taking a long time to verify password

    Hi,
My mac is configured to use an active directory account (windows small biz server 2008), i configured a mobile account when i was still under leopard and it was working fine. Since i upgraded to snow leopard i started experience the following issues:
When i am out of the office (not connected on the domain), logging in to my mac take about 5min after i type the password, same thing when the mac awakes from sleep, i type my password and it says verifying password and this takes about 5 minutes to complete! Another issue i am experiencing is that whenever i put my mac to sleep, when it wakes up most of the running applications crash and i have to restart them. i was hoping 10.6.2 would fix that but it didn't.
Sorry for the long post. Thank you in advance for your support!

I guess we will have to wait for someone to give us a clue, or for apple to release 10.6.3 .

  • Big Project:  Upgrade to Snow Leopard Server and new drive

Hi guys, with my early 09 Mac Pro (with maxed RAM) I need some advice. I am a guy who sticks with things for a long time, cautious about change, and likes consistency.
So, I have a copy of Snow Leopard SERVER I want to install from scratch. I also have 4 WD 1tb black caviar drives I want install -- replacing the current startup 640 gb drive. How would I best accomplish the backup of my current data on this smaller drive and then restore it onto the new 1tb drive?
I give you the following objectives I have for the use of these 1tb drives on the system and would appreciate any other advice you might have to offer.
    1) I envision using two of the drives as primary, and the other two as backups using TimeMachine.
    2) I would like to have the following partitions on the startup drive (#1).
a)one boot partition for installation of Server OS and Application programs.
b)one boot partition for future Mac OS installations.
c)one data partition to house the /Users filesystem - 4 named users in household who share two macbooks.
d)one or more partitions for separate deployments of Guest OSes for XP, Window 7, etc. using Parallels.
    3) As far as partition sizes, I am thinking 50 Gb for each of the MacOS bootables and apps, 100 Gb for the Guest OSes. Leaving about 500 or 600 Gb for /Users, including an iTunes library, and the wife's scrapbooking.
4)Ok, drive #2. I want this drive dedicated to demanding storage needs of video.
    5)Drive #3. TimeMachine Backup for Drive #1.
    6)Drive #4. TimeMachine Backup for Drive #2.
Thoughts? I appreciate your questions and critique on my outline here.
    Thanks much!

Off load /users to another hard drive
don't use internal drives for TimeMachine, especially both. Safer to be external. And if internal, use extra drive sleds.
Depending on what you use it for, the 640 might be fine. Maybe use it as a bootable clone though.

  • I have an older mac, i purchased Snow Leopard so that i could upgrade to Yosemite but now it says Snow Leopard is too out of date to update to Yosemite!

So i have an older Macbook that ran Leopard and i was told via Apple that in order to upgrade fully to Yosemite i would first have to purchase Snow Leopard, then i'd be able to update to Yosemite for free. I got the Snow Leopard disc (it was scratched which REALLY ****** me off, since i paid $20, but it seemed to work installing the new OS so whatever), and it's now at version 10.6.3 - i tried to run software updates and it says it's successful, but that i need to restart my computer. Every time i try, the screen just freezes with the desktop image and never restarts. And now i can't update to Yosemite because i need to have 10.6.8! I am very frustrated and not sure where to go from here. Can anyone help?

Don't panic. You can download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. Then you can access the App Store in order to download Yosemite.
Meanwhile you need to reinstall Snow Leopard properly:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Front Row on Snow Leopard has audio out of sync on movies and TV shows and some movies wont show images.

I have an iMac Core Duo 2GHz (yes, first Intel iMac). I have Snow Leopard v10.6.8 (latest/last MacOS version I could load) with the most recent Security Update (2013-003).
I have two issues with Front Row:
    • Some of the movie files will not show the images, but I can hear the audio.
    • On other movies and TV shows they start fine, but within a few minutes the audio is out of sync with the images, running about 3-5 seconds ahead... Looks like a bad dub of a Japanese movie from the 60s.
Now, I know it's related to Front Row, because when I jump over to iTunes and start the same movie or TV show it begins where I left off in Front Row, but images are fine and audio is suddenly in-sync.
However, with Snow Leopard being 2 major upgrades back - 3 if you count the upcoming Mavericks release - I doubt this registers as a "brouhaha" on Apple's radar screens. Then, again, maybe the spirit of Steve won't tolerate this Microsoft-like quirk, even if my iMac is still chugging along after 7 years and multiple MacOS X upgrades & updates...

I think I found my answer... or culprit. It has to do with Snow Leopard, and my iMac Core Duo, being the last of the dying breed of 32-bit systems, and that iTunes v11.x is 64-bit (heavily, at least)...
Guess I need to break down and replace my 7 year old iMac, even though it still works beautifully (otherwise).

  • Snow Leopard has no keyboard brightness control, why?

Why does Snow Leopard have no brightness control on the keyboard ? Also why will the magic mouse not wake the screen from sleep ?

    For brightness F14/15.
    For magic mouse: Sys Prefs>Bluetooth>Advanced

  • Snow Leopard randomly logs out

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard the system logs me out and takes me to the Login Window repeatedly. There doesn't seem to be a trigger. It just happens. All applications are quit and I have to login again with my password. Super frustrating!
I have four accounts on my MacBook Pro: the main admin account, one with parental controls, one guest account and one other user.
Does anyone else have this experience?

Yep, add one more this morning. I was using PowerPoint 2004, which is pretty unstable at the best of times, but this is the first time it's caused everything to shut down and all users to be logged out. Not pressing any particular command-key sequence that I can remember.
From the diagnostic report it looks like a seg fault, maybe due to array bounds error?
EDIT: also, my machine is a Core 2 duo, so why does this program day it's spawning 6 threads? Do these represent OpenMP threads in the normal sense? If so, surely there's not enough separate CPUs to run them on!

  • N73ME Memory leak when 3G is active

    My Phone firmware details
    V 4.0812.4.2.1
    21-03-2008
    RM-133
    Problem:
After turning on 3G on the phone for 3 to 4 hours it is saying memory full and doesn't allowing me to open any application.
It is working fine with 2G, problem is with only 3G.
Does anybody facing the same problem?
    Thanks,
    Suresh

alot of that has to do where u live? the edge should only come on when you have reached at&t or verizons boundries, the edge has your phone bounce thru other carrieris... does the edge come on alot where u live and which provider, that could tell me alot, the same thing happens to me but its only when i got to my cabin which is remote in colorado, it works 50% of the time there if i catch the "E"

  • Memory requiremtents for Snow leopard

I know SL needs 1 Gb of memory. My question is how much more of my free memory will it consume. I am fine now with my 1GB but am close to the point where I might do well to add another Gb. Not so close that I should anyway, but if SL is going to take another chunk of what I have left, I would like to know.
    Thanks
    ROn

I agree with shldr2thewheel. When it comes to RAM, there's no such thing as too much. My MacBook2,1 has 4GB installed (3GB usable). I ran with 2GB for years, but when I started using Parallels Desktop regularly for localization work, the extra GB came in VERY handy.
At the end of the day, it's mostly about the applications you use. Memory is cheap. The best advice I can give is to always put in as much as you can.

  • Memory leak - Managed beans kept in memory in ADF

    Hi,
Our application occasionally runs out of memory, and what we are finding is that the managed beans beneath components on the page are not being cleaned up, even after the user's session has expired.
What I am finding, by using the JDeveloper debugger and Heap window, is that there are instances of com.evermind.server.http.EvermindHttpServletRequest left in memory, which hangs on to the entire page, and therefore all of the instances of the ADF Component classes and managaged beans.
Has anyone else come across this and found a way to clean up all of the page information left on the EvermindHttpServletRequest after the page is no longer in scope, and the session has expired?
Any assistance which anyone can provide on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I'm quite sure I'm hitting the same problem here. This is really serious!
