Big mistake...renamed disk image on desktop...

Yup. I just can't leave well enough alone. I set up time capsule with little trouble and it ran for 3 weeks. Then, like a jerk, I renamed this little disk image on my desktop. Couldn't remember it being there before...so I just renamed it and tried to throw it away!
BIG MISTAKE.
Now time machine says it failed and is now unable to mount the backup.
So I just "entered the time machine" and then exited. No big deal.
BUT...
After that, any attempt to backup leads to a total crash requiring a restart.
Is anybody as dumb as me? Without admitting dumbness, is anybody willing to offer a solution? or should I just start all over again?
Bill

Now any time I try to back up, or merely access TC, I get the total, dimmed-screen system crash. SOMEBODY HELP!!!!!!!

  • Time Machine placing multiple disk images on Desktop

    Hi,
I have recently set-up a 2TB Time Capsule for one of my clients.
Each time Time Machine does an hourly backup - it places a Disk Image icon on the desktop called e.g.'Backup of Anya' - which is basically the sparse disk image mounting from the Time Capsule on the Desktop temporarily whilst TM backs up to it - the problem however is the disk image does not auto-unmount when completed ...
An hour later it will mount another Disk Image backup on the desktop - and so on and so on and so on ...
by the end of the day there are close to 10 unmounted Time Machine backup disks on the desktop - and subsequently in each machines 'Devices' panel in the Finder - all across the network ...
Does anyone know why or how this is happening?
It's my understanding the the image should automatically unmount when TM has completed its hourly backup.
    I'm stumped ...

  • Disk image on desktop

What does it mean, and what did I do wrong, if every time I click on a program, it mounts to the desktop like it did when I first installed it, thereby leaving the image on the desktop until I eject it?

    Jargra,
A Disk Image is like a "virtual disk" contained in a single file. This is the "disk image file." When the file is opened, the "volume" it represents is mounted on your Desktop just like a physical disk. Once mounted, it behaves like a physical disk.
Many OS X applications come in disk images. You are supposed to either 1) run the installer that is stored in the disk image, or 2) drag the application that is stored in the disk image to your "Applications" folder.
I think your confusion comes from the idea that dragging the application, still located in the disk image, to your Dock will "install" it. In fact, all this does is create a shortcut to the application that is still located in the disk image.
Mount the disk image on your Desktop. Open it up, and find the application that is stored there. Open your hard drive, then open the "Applications" folder. Drag the application from the disk image to the "Applications" folder. You can now eject the disk image, find the disk image file, drag it to the trash and empty it. Once you have done this, drag the current icon for that application out of your Dock. Locate the copy of the application that is now in your "Applications" folder and drag it to your Dock.

  • Downloading programs creates disk image on desktop...

When I downloaded Picasa (and Skype) from the web, it created a disk image instead of just installing the program.  When I try to open it from the disk image, it says it is from an unidentified developer and asks for permission to open it.  Is there a way to get this to install the program like others?

You should be happy to get a dialog asking for permission and your password - with all the malware all over the internet, it is much safer that way.
Most of the time, you will get a .dmg and you will need to authorize the install - another safety feature.
Now, a new feature of ML is that safety net of any application that does not come from the app store or the developer has not yet signed with Apple that his apps are ok, you will get that dialog. You can turn it off by going to the Security & Privacy Pane in System Preferences > General > and check "anywhere" (you must click the lock and enter your password first). Or, you can leave the default setting, and when you click to open a downloaded app, hit the Control key while clicking to open and you will get a regular "open" dialog.

  • On install, no disk images on desktop - HELP!

Installing to an iBook, everything loaded seemingly fine. But then...
    - There are no HD or Finder icons on the desktop. Completely blank. As a result, it's rather difficult (but not impossible) to navigate. There is a Dock, however, and I can use that.
    - A spinning disk is continual.
    - When programs are closed, it's impossible to use the Apple-Finder-Edit-View..etc part of the desktop. (I can use the Dock menu to use most apps, but downloads and navigation on the opening screen are impossible.
I tried using Disk Utility, but I can't get that to work even on my two successful installs (iMac G5, MacBook G4).
The vanished Finder seems to be the the problem...but how do I get it back?
    Thanks

Sorry to hear that...I had the exact same problem. It would take a few restarts to get to the desktop, and when I did get there, all the icons were missing and the Finder was locked up. Hopefully, you have backed up all of your data. If not, I was able to navigate to Backup/HD by using Spotlight. I tried restarting the Finder several times, but no luck.
If you have a Tiger intall disk or the restore CD's, try to boot from one of those and run Disk Utility to repair permissions. That helped a bit for me.
Ultimately, I had to boot from CD and erase the hard drive. I ended up re-installing Tiger, and I am going to wait for some of the bugs to get worked out in Leopard before I try again.
    Good luck!

  • Why can't I undo a big mistake renaming folders--help my library's wrecked

I was backing up a CD we bought for the kids to learn spanish. I multiple edited all of the album's details to call it spanish cd and after I pressed enter a box appeared that said it was processing, and to my horror all the names of my whole itunes library appeared momentarily as they got worked over. Now my whole library is called 'spanish cd' and no albums are together anymore. I tried to undo the action but cannot. Can anybody pLEEEZE help me. I feel that I will have to reload sixty + CDs. Help, help, help. SOS.
Aidan. PS I tried to unchech boxes that say itunes should arrange folders as one entry on the forum seemed to be saying this causes 'undo' problems in other ways. NO result. Help!!!!
    Thankyou.

iTunes does not have an undo feature and will not necessarily warn you that you are about to do something catastrophic.
If you have the files on an iPod then you could recover them complete with correct tags using methods in this post from Zevoneer: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6273675&#6273675
Failing that, you could try MusicBrainz PicardTagger. This is supposed to be able to extract an audio fingerprint of your media files and compare them with a database to determine the correct tag info. It works best however when the files are still arranged in related groups.
Unchecking the "Keep iTunes Music folder organised" option now is a horse & stable door scenario. If you'd done that before your mass edit a simple tagging tool could have rebuilt the album titles from each file's folder name.

  • IDVD 6.02  track initialization problems and no disk image

"There was an error during track initialization and iDVD can't continue burning this DVD (the disc has not been touched yet!). Select 'Delete Encoded Assets' from the Advanced-menu and try burning this project again."
This has happened 5 times now both when trying to burn to DVD-R and trying to save as disk image on desktop. Very frustrating.
Project exported to IDVD from Keynote 3.01 running OSX 10.4.7 on a Powermac G5 D2.3 GHz with 2.5GB RAM.
The project is just 1GB using iDVD 4 theme "Transparent Blue" with a run time of 15:14 mins and HD has over 20GB free.
Also tried it from the other internal HD which has over 100GB free.
    PBG4 Ti DVI and PMac G5 D2.3Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Both TV (using a Sony DVD player) and on my Lacie
Photon 20 monitor - the slideshow jpegs and Keynote
fonts look poor compared to the straight QT movies
that are part of the project and made using iMovie.
Your QT movies are probably much higher resolution than your DVD.
    JEPGS are pretty hi res.
Ultimately, all the resolution you can get on an NTSC DVD is 640x480 pixels in the square pixel terms of digital cameras. The HD discs we can create today have the same 'limited' resolution - they just stretch the pixels on playback.
Someday ... when we can all afford systems with TRUE HD format burners and players, things will get better.

  • Rename Volume in Disk Image

I'm trying to make a few copies of a home movie DVD a friend made for me. I would like the new discs to have a different title from the generic one.
However, when I use Disk Utility to "create new image from disk", even when I set it to a read/write image I cannot rename the volume when I mount it. Everywhere I've looked the answer seems to be "mount the disk image, rename the volume, unmount, and you're set, burn away." But I can't rename the volume from Finder, in the 'Get Info' properties window, etc. This is driving me mad, I appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks!

What if anything happens when you try to rename the mounted volume? Is there an error message? Perhaps your drive needs repair:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
As an afterthought rather than creating the disk image from Disc X instead click on the New Image icon the toolbar, set the required image size and name, select read/write and no encryption. Make the destination the Desktop and click on the Create Image button.

  • CDs, DVDs, disk images won't appear in Sidebar or on Desktop

    Hello,
Brand new iMac 2.16, right out of the box.
CDs, DVDs, and Disk Images won't appear on the desktop or in the Sidebar. Nothing is shown over the horizontal gray line at the top of the sidebar, no Macintosh HD, Servers, etc. Disk Images are fully functional, ie Disk Utility recognizes and mounts them just fine.
I checked Mac Help and followed its instructions:
    (1) In Finder preferences:Pane:General, all 'Show These Items on the Desktop' boxes are checked.
    (2) In Finder preferences:Pane:Sidebar, I checked all boxes under "Show These Items in the Sidebar. BUT these changes are NOT retained. After I close the Preferences, the Sidebar does not change. If I re-open the Sidebar preferences, the relevant boxes are now unchecked, as if I'd never done a thing.
Restarting was the only way to fix the problem. Thereafter, the upper items in the Sidebar (Macintosh HD, external drives, iPod, CDs) sometimes SPONTANEOUSLY disappear. They still show up on the desktop, but tweaking the Sidebar preferences is again ineffective. Restarting is the only solution.
    Thank you for your help,
    Andy

Hi Andy, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
1] Everything elmac says is helpful and correct.
2] An upgrade to 10.4.8 with the 10.4.8 Combo from blue apple / Mac OS Updates might fix your hiccup. If you don't want .8 then .7 combo.
3] [OT] For some minor security issues, it is better to surf the internet in a standard account. If you are surfing in an admin account then here is how to switch and maintain prefs.
Set up a new account in System Preferences / Accounts / +
and make it have admin priviledges. Be sure to remember short name and password since you will be asked to "authenticate" when running in your standard account. This new account is often called "test" in these forums.
Once that is done convert your regular account to standard.

  • Inconsistencies between sidebar and desktop for disk images

    Hi;
I'm tweaking my settings to keep just those things visible that I want to have visible, and I have noticed that a mounted disk image is treated differently by different parts of Finder Prefs. In the General tab of Finder Prefs, I make a mounted disk image appear on the desktop (or not) but checking/unchecking the External disks checkbox. So the desktop treats a disk image as an external disk, not a hard disk.
However, in the Sidebar tab of the Finder prefs, a mounted Disk Image is treated as a Hard disk, not an external disk.
Can anyone shed any light on why this should be?

On my system, both the General & Sidebar tabs fail to display mounted disk images only if the "CDs, DVD's, & iPods" box is not checked. Weird, but at least it is consistent.

  • Disk image of HD -- "image/device too big"

I'm trying to make a disk image of my hard drive as a backup. I did this with the other three Macs in my house, using Disk Utility and saving them to an external Firewire drive. No problem. But when I try to do the same thing with my G5, I get a message saying "image/device is too big." If I was getting this message from my wife, I guess I'd be flattered ... from my Mac, not so much.
The thing is, I should have plenty of room. The external drive has 139 GB of space available and the G5 is only using 51GB. Get Info says I have 148 GB capactiy and about 97 GB available. Does the external drive need room for the whole 148 GB to create the disk?
The main difference between the other operations and the troublesome one is that I save the other Disk Images using my G5 running MacOS 10.4.11. The other Macs all were running 10.3.9. I'd access them in Target Mode on my G5 and save the Disk Image. When I tried to reverse the process and used the newest 10.3.9 machine (a G4) to save a dmg of my G5, I get the "too big" message.
Any suggestions? Would Carbon Copy Cloner (or something else) allow me to do this from the G5? Any help would be appreciated.

    Found answer elsewhere.

  • Disk Image too big in iDVD 6.0.1

I created a 1 hour 27 minute movie in iMovie 6.0.1 and dragged it into a new iDVD 6.0.1 project. Used Travel widescreen theme and the default audio clip for that main menu. Removed the audio clips from the chapter menus. Created a disk image: 4.29GB, which seems big for an hour and a half movie...
Then I noticed a typo. So I deleted the movie from iDVD and dragged my modified iMovie in. Rebuilt the iDVD menus. This time I added a 3 minute AIFF piece of music instead of the default on the main menu. Created a disk image: 4.41GB. Toast Titanium 7.0.2 wouldn't let me burn the disk image to DVD-R unless I used their built-in compression feature; which I did. Looks virtually the same as my original DVD.
I looked at the sizes of VOBs in both images. The main menu VOB (use MPEG Streamclip to find it) was 524.3MB in the disk image that would fit on a SL DVD-R. The one that didn't fit was 914MB. I have to assume that's because of the length of the music on that main menu.
I then edited my 3 minute music to 30 seconds and used that clip. Deleted encoded assets, and re-encoded. That disk image is 4.26GB and squeaks on a SL DVD-R without using Toast compression.
With a movie running only 1 hour and 27 minutes, this "too big" should NOT be an issue.
I did post this here too: http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html
    G4 DP 1.25 GHz 2GB RAM 4 Drives 770GB Mac OS X (10.4.6) 2 SuperDrives (SL 8X & DL 16X)

The problem seems to be the same as in
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=450944&tstart=120
I also submitted the problem to Apple.
AplleCare did not provide a solution.
I think I have some leads on how to fix it, but no clear solution yet.

  • Desktop acting like Disk Image?

I am having some very strange issues with my Mac right now. Whenever I try to move something from the desktop to the trash can, I get a warning saying the item will be permenantly deleted immediately. This is before I empty the trash. I am also having some issues when I try to update Adium or 1Password or a couple other programs I get a weird error:
    Update Error!
1Password does not have permission to write to the application's directory! Are you running off a disk image? If not, ask your system administrator for help.
I know I have Admin rights, I have repaired disk permissions, I don't really know what to do next. I get some weird things when I do the Repair Permissions though. It says:
ACL found but not expected "Applications/Utilities"
ACL found but not expected "Applications"
ACL found but not expected "Library"
    Thanks for your help.

Just an update on what I have done:
Did an archive and install at the recommendation of apple support and that didn't fix it.
After that they recommended I delete the user and then restore all the settings and everything from the disk image that is created. This actually fixed the problem, but now it turns out that the permissions on all the files are screwed up. Here is a picture of what it looks like.
    http://skitch.com/adamteece/ghfc/permissions-issues
We tried to fix them, and I fixed a lot of the permissions but you have to go through file by file to change it. We tried resetting permissions from the leopard disk, repair permissions from disk utility, but nothing seemed to work. It is usable for now, but there are still issues here and there. I hope Apple will fix it. I am not the only one having this permissions problem now, here is a thread describing it better.

  • Application disk image won't eject off the desktop?

    Hi,
Lately I've been having this problem with either Firefox or Safari and I download something and the dmg extracts and I'm left with the white casing shell where the app is housed and it won't eject. I can't eject it from finder but dumping it to the trash from finder took it off the sidebar. I can't get them off my desktop unless I restart my Mac.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it? I'm using Leopard 10.5.2.
    S.

Thanks to DeltaMac I figured out all the problems I was having with my Finder. I was missing a lot of options under my Finder tab like Empty Trash, Preferences, Quit etc. Also I had no option to right click and eject disk images or external hard drives.
All you have to do is download Onyx here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20070
Then open up Onyx and go to OnyX/Parameters/Finder
put a check in the box next to Show Preferences item, Show Empty Trash, Show Quit item, and Show Eject item and whatever else you want. You have to do them each individually though and wait for the prompt. Then item log out and back in again and everything should be back to normal.

  • Disk image keeps appearing on my desktop

    Hi there,
There is a 'dodgy' disk image that keeps popping up on my desktop...
It just says 'installer'... I suspect it is some malware that is trying to get onto my computer.
how do I get rid of it?
    many thanks.

You can find out where that disk image file is by selecting the "disk" on your desktop and choosing File -> Get Info. In the General section of the info window, it will show you the path to the source disk image file. If it's in your Downloads folder, or wherever your browser is set to put downloads, then you just need to delete that file.
However, I suspect it will be somewhere else, such as /private/tmp, in which case that means it was downloaded by some other adware installer that you downloaded and opened. Whatever bad software got installed is probably still trying to get you to install the contents of that disk image. Remove that adware, either using AdwareMedic, as Matt suggested, or the manual instructions found in my Adware Removal Guide, then make sure to restart the computer. Look in the location where that disk image file was, and delete it if it's still there.
(Fair disclosure: I may receive compensation from links to my sites, TheSafeMac.com and AdwareMedic.com, in the form of buttons allowing for donations. Donations are not required to use my site or software.)
