Big PDF files

Why are the PDF files that come with some installed programs so big? For example, the "iMovie Getting Started" file is 23.3 megs while the exact same file downloaded off the support website is 1.2 megs. There's no obvious differences between them. When looking up the file information for the 23.3 meg file, I noticed something called "Readit version 1.02" as an item. I think that's what may be causing the file bloat but I have know idea what purpose Readit serves.

Nope, I examined the pictures closely for differences. One interesting thing I failed to mention is that Get Info on finder will show the big file size but when you use Preview's Get Info function, you get a file size that is roughly the same as the file downloaded off the support site.
This kind of supports the multilanguage theory, as it probably means that only the english version of the PDF was open, and thus Preview only recognized the file size of that version. Still don't know how Readit works exactly.

  • How can I transfer a big .pdf file e.g. 9 MB from my Macintosh Performa 5200 and its OS 8.1 to an USB-flash drive?

How can I transfer a big .pdf file e.g. 9 MB from my Macintosh Performa 5200 and its OS 8.1 to an USB flash drive? E.g. is there any adapter available in order to connect the SCSI with USB? Or is it better to use a compression software and transfer it to 10 3,5" floppy discs?
    Thank you
    Emanuel

    Hello Emanuel,
The Performa 5200CD did not have built-in Ethernet as standard, so unless an Ethernet card (or an external SCSI or LocalTalk-to-Ethernet adapter) has been added, that method would not be available in this case.
Your suggestion involving compression software (such as an appropriate version of StuffIt) with segmenting capabilities could of course be one alternative.
If you have an internal or external modem for the Performa, another way could be to use the telephone lines for transfers. A communications program would have to be used on both sides (for example, ZTerm or the communications section of ClarisWorks on the Performa).
It is even possible to connect two serial modems directly. A simple line simulator (in principle, a 9 V battery in series with a 680 ohm resistor in one of the leads in an RJ-11 to RJ-11 cable), which can be built in a couple of minutes, is sometimes needed. Do NOT use a line simulator for units connected to the public telephone network.
Yet another solution could be a null-modem transfer to a PC with a (DB-9M) serial port. This would require a null-modem cable (can be designed by combining a Macintosh modem cable (MiniDIN-8M to DB-25M) with a normal PC-style (DB-25F to DB-9F) null-modem cable . HyperTerminal or another communications program can be used on the PC.
What do you have to work with (other computers/models/platforms)? Is this a one-time transfer, or do you plan to send additional files later? Is the intention to continue to use the Performa 5200?

  • RenderPDFForm is generating big pdf files

    hi,
In a workbench process Im generating a xdp file that I convert to a PDF file using the renderPDFForm component. This is working, however, the generated PDF document is not being compressed. In the renderPDFForm properties I can´t find any property to compress the pdf file.
My guess is that the component is generating the pdf with fonts included...
    What can I control this?
    thank you

Embedding the font shouldn't make your file size too large.  To answer about XCI URI question, I have no idea.  I've not done any work with that functionality.  Some things you can check though:
    1.  If you have images anywhere in your XDP/PDF, make sure they are NOT embedded.  This can be checked in LiveCycle Designer in the properties for each individual image.  Images really crank up file size.
    2.  Make sure your form is only a dynamic PDF form if you need it to be.
    3.  Make sure ONLY the fonts that you need are embedded.  Say you only need to show Courier to the user.  It may be possible that other fonts are embedded in weird places too.  Sometimes captions that have no text, but are in a different font, will cause that font to also be embedded.  Sometimes an empty "" part of a text field somewhere is set to a different font.  It's a pain, but Ctrl + F through the XML view of your form to try to find any random places an extra font could be set.
As far as the compression goes, I was unaware that FormsService even compressed the PDF by default, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't.  It's possible I've just never investigated it.  But if you have a pretty complex form with a lot of XML data, it's not uncommon for a PDF to end up a couple MBs in size, especially if there are a lot of repeatable subforms/table rows in the form.

  • How to emai a big PDF file without it sending as a zip file so can be read on a pc?

What's the best way to send large emails containing pictures and text from
MacBook to pc without it being received as a zip file

First, you have to investigate what's the max size your and your recipient's mail providers permit. In many cases, that is the main limiting factor. Next, you need to configure the mail program you use to avoid auto-zip'ing the attachments.

  • PDF File Size - any way to compress further?

We have are using the Crystal for .NET export method to export a report to a .pdf file, and are having an issue with the pdf file size on a report that contains images.  The images are stored in a SQL2005 database as blob or varbinary(max).  The report executes a stored procedure that selects data (including images) to produce a quotation.  There are input parms to decide which images to print (for example A, B or both A&B). Both types of images can appear at the line level on the quotation. Type A images print in the main report, Type B images are in a subreport.  Both the main report & subreport execute a stored procedure to select an image type.
Our issue, when both Type A and B image is selected to print on a 293 line quote.  The PDF file size is 44.23MB
When Type A only is selected, the PDF file size is 2.64MB
When Type B only is selected, the PFD file size is 43.95MB.
There are more Type B images that would print at the line level than Type A, but is there any way to compress this down further as it is too large to email.

You mention that you are using Crystal for .NET, but not what version; CR for .NET 2003, 2005, 2008. 2010?
Applying the latest fixes for the correct version of CR would be the first thing to do.
Next, I'd have a close look at image B as it appears to be the one adding the most "bulk". How is this image different from image A?
    General tips re. images:
    Save the files a BMPs.
When .jpg image is inserted into Crystal Reports it is converted into bitmap format and as the result of the conversion the report may loose some quality, scale and other issues may arise... E.g.; Crystal Reports is not so good a graphics management tool
When an image is saved as a .bmp, then there is no conversion required and thus the quality of the image should be preserved.
Best practice: save the image with high resolution and required size as a .bmp format then insert this image into Crystal Reports.
Resize the image to the smallest possible size and downgrade the DPI to 72. This will ensure your image is as small as possible and Crystal Reports will have to put in the least amount of work to display it.
Have a look ar KB [1241630 - Exporting a Crystal report (XI) to PDF generates a big PDF file|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/oss_notes_boj/sdn_oss_boj_bi/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/scn_bosap/notes%7B6163636573733d36393736354636443646363436353344333933393338323636393736354637333631373036453646373436353733354636453735364436323635373233443330333033303331333233343331333633333330%7D.do]. This KB, may apply to your version of CR, or not. In any case, you will have to use the KB as a guide and determine what the appropriate registry entry would be for your version of CR.
One more thing. Many people like to use jpg files as they are smaller than bmp files. However, as far as Crystal Reports is concerned, this is inconsequential. The report file will be the same size if a file is inserted as a jpg or a bmp. This is due to the jpg conversion to bmp Crystal Reports does internally.

  • Is it possible that 1 RTF template with 1 xml file produces many PDF files

    Hello,
We are using XML publisher with eBS.
As part of it, we've got treatments that generate invoices.
One treatment produces 1 big XML file with many invoices in it.
Currently, this big XML file generates one big PDF file with all the invoices.
I'd like to know if it's possible to keep the big XML file (with many invoices), and instead, generate 1 PDF file per invoice ?
Basically we would like to split the big PDF file into small PDF, one PDF file per invoice .
If it's possible, then, how can we do it ?
I hope my explanation is clear.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Olivier

    Hello all,
I've solved this problem... may be it isn't the best solution, but now I don't have any problem with big pdf files.
Sometimes Acrobat Reader may not be properly displaying the PDF file within the browser. And I've found that, to solve this problem, Adobe recommends configuring Acrobat Reader as a 'helper', not a 'plug-in'. To configure Acrobat or Acrobat Reader as a helper application:
1.) Exit or close your browser.
2.) Start or open Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
3.) Select your version of Acrobat and follow the instructions below.
Acrobat 6.0 or above on Windows:
1.) Select 'Preferences' from the Edit menu.
2.) From the Preferences dialog box, select 'Internet' from list on the left.
3.) Uncheck 'Display PDF in browser'.
    Acrobat 5.0 on Windows:
1.) Select 'Preferences/General' from the Edit menu.
2.) From the Preferences dialog box, select 'Options' from list on the left.
3.) Uncheck 'Display PDF in Browser' under Web Browser Options.
    Acrobat 4.0 on Windows:
1.) Select 'Preferences/General' from the File menu.
2.) From the General Preferences dialog box, select 'Options' from list on the left.
3.) Uncheck 'Web Browser Integration' under Options.
    ( I've found it at: http://www.aspplayground.net/forum/m_382719/printable.htm )
Now, when you click on a pdf link the file is opened outside the browser using the Acrobat Reader applicantion and without any problem.
I hope this helps you _

  • Viewing large PDF files over Ethernet

maybe it'ts not the right forum, but users handling big PDF files might have a tipp.
My PDF files are about 180 MB big and about 30 pages long, consisting highres images. The scrolling throug the document takes ages. I do have a fast Windows 2003 server connetect over 1GB ethernet to my XP workstation.  When I copy the PDF file to the workstation it works fine.
Is there a trick to get some kind of caching the open filestream during scrolling?
    I use Acrobat 7.1.0.
    thank you

  • How do I combine pdf files into one?

I am trying to combine pdf files into on big pdf file. I have an account and I am signed in but when I try to create a file the options do not pop up. Only option is to open a single file, not combine them.

You are asking in the Adobe Reader user two user forum. Adobe Reader cannot combine PDF files.
You spoke of a "service".  The  forum for subscription services is  the acrobat.com forum.

  • Big pdf landscape sliding

Ok, i have a ipad 2 wifi. And i have a big pdf files which has 257pages. And I view it with ibooks under landscape(horizontal). There is the problem:
When i slide to a previous page, say from page 156 to page 155, the first attemp alwyas failed, and the scond attemp succeeded mostly. This make the user experience very very bad. However, when in the vertical mode, this problem doesn't exist any more. So how to solve the weired problem? Is is related to the pdf files?
    Any ideas will be appreicated.
    Best wishes
    Hu Jingfei

Sorry for my poor english. I need to explain it further and clearer. OK, now I view the big pdf file with iBooks in landscape orientation and the current page is 156, for example. After a short stay on the current page, I want to switch to the previous page, i.e. page 155, then I slide from left to right. However, the first sliding always failed, the current page can move to right a little, but never across the middle of the screen, so the current page is still there. And the second sliding succeeds mostly. Just slide from the left to right slightly, the current page moves out, the previous page moves in. Now I always need to slide twice in order to switch to previous page, which makes user experience very very bad. This phenomena won't happen under the vertical orientation. How to solve the weired problem? Is this related to the pdf files such as its width and height?
    Thanks
