Big Picture Questions on Aperture usage

Hi!
My company manufactures a product that our customers are nutso about. We encourage them to take photos of themselves, and send the photos to us. We then publish them on our web site.
As a result, I receive sometimes a couple of hundred photos a month, usually via email, and of widely varying sizes/resolutions.
I then categorize these with keywords, so when I need to find an image (for an ad, brochure, whatever), I can quickly trim these 8,000 images down to a reasonable number to choose from.
My questions are thus:
1. What is the best way to get these images into Aperture? I need to import them into a project so I can sort and keyword them, but they are not all a part of a single project...
2. Is there any way to create smart albums for images that do NOT contain a specific keyword?
3. I want to create an album of images that are of print resolution (150 dpi, or more). So I create a new SmartAlbum, but what EXIF data can I use as my limit? I don't see resolution, dpi, or anything similar listed anywhere... what am I missing, here?!?
I appreciate any and all help that people can provide!
Thank you,
- CJ

Hi CJ,
My .02¢...
Assuming you're having Aperture manage your photos (as opposed to referencing them), here is a possible workflow.
1. Create the projects you want to place the photos into, then save the photos into folders on your desktop with names that correspond to the project names.
2. Normally you'd create a smart album based on some kind of data, as opposed to non-data. Perhaps simply rating the photos you want in this album with one star, then setting up the album to look for photos with only one star.
3. DPI is done on export, as DPI is for printing not screen resolution. Screen res and dpi are different beasts. At any rate, you may want simply drag the photos your going to print into a normal album entitled PRINT, etc.

  • Big picture - conceptual guidance

As a newbie buying CS5 Web Premium I started using Flash Catalyst first. I initially found Catalyst was more useful to me as I am more interested in Flash use for web design. I tried out all the main features and loved it. However, there are some things that FC just will not do and so I need to develop my knowledge of Flash Pro.
Here's the thing I need guidance on. I find the Page/States so easy to grasp. They are excellent for tranistions and make designing web pages/sites so much easier, that concept is simple and fluid to me. What I fail to grasp is how one would operate in Flash Pro - in a similar way. I apreciate the Timeline use in Flash Pro for animation but Animation is not my thing. I will make more use of the 'website interaction' stuff that Flash is capable of.
So I guess the 'big picture' question is this - How does one use Flash Pro in a kind of Page/States way ?
Does one use grouped layers instead of page/states - or - does one use key frames instead of Page/States ?
Before I start designing, I really want to grasp the concept of operating in Flash Pro to produce websites so I have the foundation set in my mind.
I hope I got the issue across - I fear I have not communicated this very well but hopefully, someone out there will understand.
    regards

There are a number of different ways to approach a web site design in Flash, and all kinds of variations among them and in combining them since each can serve a useful purpose.  You can use the timeline to isolate separate sections, or you can use movieclips to contain them and manage their visibility, or you can have your sections as separate swf files (or library content) that get loaded dynamically, or you can have content that is created entirely dynamically using internal/external data resources.
I'd say rather than picking one to follow, learn them all since they all offer certain features that prove useful under varying circumstances.

  • Is there a maximum pictures number for Aperture?

The question is due to a reduced speed of Aperture in managing almost 17.000 pix.
The most of the pictures are Raw but stored in an external Hd.
I erased all the previews and now I'm trying to regenerate them in a smallest size with no success.
Aperture get paralyzed and I got to force it in quitting.
Recently I upgraded my MBP 2008 to Snow Leopard: maybe it's because of Snow Leopard?
I hope my question is clear.
    Thanks for any help.
    Simone
Ps: I even tryed to downgrade the Ram, from 4 Gb to 2Gb. I noticed some improvements not in speed but rather in stability.

I don't know if there is a maximum number, but if there is it is way more than 17,000 pictures. I know of people with hundreds of thousands of pictures in an Aperture library.
BTW you should upgrade to Aperture 2.1.4 if you're running Snow Leopard for compatibility reasons… have you done that?

  • Several Questions about Aperture Problems

Having used Aperture for some time, and being a Mac user since 1985, I have a list of questions about Aperture that I need help with.
    1. Periodically operating the sliders will make an image turn black. Sometimes this is early in a session, sometimes late. Various workarounds will bring the image back, but once this starts, quitting seems the only option. Can anyone help me with why this happens and how to stop it?
    2. About 20% of the RAW files from my supported camera display the Unsupported Image Format error screen. These files operate perfectly in the manufacturers software and in other image management software that does not use the OS RAW libraries. Can someone help me with the cause of this and the solution (not a "workaround" but a way to make it stop happening).
    3. ALL of my RAW files from my supported camera, when I try to lift metadata, return the error message that there is no metadata to lift. But in fact, the metadata inspector displays metadata. How can I stop this from happening and experience normal metadata lifting?
    4. When I use the DNG format from my supported camera, a great many EXIF fields do not display, such as lens data. Can someone help me with DNG files, since these never generate the UIF error screen (cf. #2 above) as the manufacturer's RAW files do. I'm forced to use DNGs to have all my shots, but the EXIF data is not fully displayed.
    5. Today I opened Aperture and no previews would display. Aperture froze while updating thumbnails. I'd not done any non-routine edits or imported any unusual files or formats. Aperture then would not quit. Is it safe to attempt to restart Aperture?
    6. At times Aperture slows to the point of not working at all. Long pauses simply in trying to enlarge the selection circles for redeye removal, for example. What would cause Aperture to slow down without warning at any point in the workflow? How can I experience a more consistent operating speed from Aperture.
    7. How do other image management programs like Lightroom compare on these points? Is Aperture typical or should I seek a change in my workflow, improvement in my hardware, or some adjustment in my installation?
Info: MacBook Pro, 4 GB RAM (apple), 320 GB drive, 45 GB free on drive; library of 3800 images. Fewer than 12 projects.
    Thanks for your assistance.

n #3. It looks like you're absolutely right on this. I went back and checked on photos I'd edited and there was the altered metadata. +Many thanks for dispelling that concern!+ I love being a happy camper. Check that one off the list!
On 1, I've followed the black-screen issues and pretty much all we know is that a workaround exists--usually selecting the crop box restores the picture, but a lot of times it blacks out again. Having used Apple products over 25 years, all of which was in my adult professional life, I haven't seen Apple willing to just let users tolerate an irritating "workaround." I think this is something that needs fixing.
On 6--I don't understand how the rotational speed would produce erratic performance issues. I can go a month of reasonable performance, and then suddenly things bog down. Also, if that is the reason, this really ought to be part of the System Requirements, or at least, a recommendation. Maybe it is already--I should check to be sure. I confess this is one aspect I had not thought about.
Thanks so much for thinking about these. I love my Apple products and have owned almost every generation of Mac since the "Fat Mac" (512K RAM! 800Kb Floppies!) and hate to stare at the screen and think I've been given a truly poor product--not in my DNA--but these things break my heart.

  • Dragging a Big Picture

Hello folks, I had been searching and found plenty examples on
how to print a web page, but....
Anyone here knows where I can find an example on how to print a picture
on the page, not the whole page ?
I found one, but was not well explain.....
    Thanks

Ok folks, I went trough all the posts and I can see what
the error is, there is a post about a coupon that should NOT be here.
Some how got into this area.  ( That was another question )
What I asking is for example on Java, CSS or PHP that let a person looking at
the page " with a coupon" in the very center, to print
" THAT COUPON" and NOT the whole page.
Like Ken Binney indicate above, just that I hardly getting a hand on CSS
( Got no idea how to )
The question about the picture, was on a script that let the viewer of your page
to click and drag the "Big" picture around, like Google those with their Maps.
I know the pictures are small pieces of the big picture, but cant find
a code to do this or how to cut the big picture according / for the script.
I had found plenty examples but they all use Flash.
Sorry, for all the mess, but the two questions got mix here.
One question was about printing a coupen that the customer see on the page
The other was about the Big Picture "Dragging" with the mouse like Google Maps.
    Thanks !  ( And Sorry )

  • Question about Aperture slide shows

Question about Aperture slide shows. How can I eliminate banding in a blue sky when photos are displayed in Aperture Slide shows?

What kind of banding? Do you have a screenshot?
It could be jpg compression related, I think the previews are all jpgs.

  • Small picture inset in the big picture

Why would the printer print a picture that has part of the picture set in the big picture?  On the page preview it doesn't show up but.  It has happened when printing a PDF and also when printing a bmp. file.  Any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • Windows users do not receive pictures sent with Aperture via Mail

Sometimes my buddies windows users reply to my e-mail saying that they have not received the attached picture(s).
It looks like their anti-virus software is cutting them off.
This happens when I send the picture directly from Aperture using Mail.
I've tried several times and I ended up exporting the pictures on the desktop and attaching them to the message.
    Like this it works.
In the e-mail export preset I use Email small-JPEG.
Is there anything else I should do ?
    Thanks
    Dual 2 Ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

I can verify that this does seem to be an Aperture problem; I have run a number of tests. If I "output" to eMail from Aperture there are two known problems: The progress of the send is not shown in the Mail window, as it should be, to let you know, visually, when something is in transit and when it gets to the other end it is treated as "malformed" by my colleagues' P.C.s. If I export the image to the desktop and drag and drop it in exactly the same configuration it arrives without a problem.

  • Displaying a Big Picture on Flash CS4

    Hello folks..........
It is possible to create a flash picture that the user
    can drag around ?
In another words, this will be a big picture
on a small area or screen and the person with
scrollbars or mouse can drag / pan the picture.
    Thanks
    Gesy

Yes, if you place the image inside a movieclip you can use actionscript to control the x and y properties of the movieclip (to move it around with scrollers) and to have it draggable.  You can also add a mask over it to define the area of it that will be viewed.

  • How to separate 2 divisions via authorization; Big Picture needed

    Hi,
we are going to use our CRM System for a second Division and we are planning to do this with the SAP Authorization Concept. (Main Issue: Div 2 is not allowed to see the BPs of Div 1)
I found some relevant SAP Notes for this; for example Note 545334(Separate the BP Transaction Results of the F4 Search) But I`m still missing the BIG Picture.
Does anybody have some hints for me how to get the big Picture?
    Thanks in advance
    Best regards

    Dagfinn,
You probably need to send email to Amit Levavi. Technically with my infrastructure/landscape project experiences, I would agree with Alternative 4. If SSL and Security is not an issue, and you have the same audience (external/intranet, etc.), then it would be my approach as well. Even with a Big Portal, with J2EE WAS 6.40, you can always add servers.

There was an error opening the database for the library “/Users/madis13/Pictures/Nikon Transfer3/Aperture Library.aplibrary”.
What to do when it comes to such a notice?
If I want to open the aperture program, followed by a message, and the only option is to quit, but the program is not avanegi

    chose import library.
    That might be the problem.
If you want to import an image file in to an Aperture Library, you use the command
         File > Import > Files
    or
File > Import > Folders as Projects.
    The command
      File > Import > Library
is for importing whole iPhoto Libraries or Aperture Libraries.  Have you tried to import the Aperture Library into itself?
However, the program did not open the catalog yet, and I did force quit.
Do you mean, after you tried to "import as library"?
Any success with the First Aid Tools as I suggested?
Hold the key combination ⌥⌘ firmly down and double click your Aperture Library. Then select a repair option from the panel.

  • KCLP - can someone give me the big picture?

In a project I have to review I stumbled into some log files displayed with Tx KCLP. It's some "external data transfer" logs.
Unfortunately I miss the big picture and I did not find much on KCLP. Can someone give me a hint what's the big picture, e.g. what kind of applications use the KCLP logs.
    Thanks Frank

I know KCLP is used by CO-PA to import external data via KEFC.
    THe bigger picture is
    - provide an import structure
    - define some transfer rules
    - post the data
