Big problem! Can someone help me?

I was using software update yesterday, and the computer crashed during installation of the update. I started the computer again, and since then, nothing is mounting to the desktop, and the finder won't open. The dock is still there, and most apps still seem to be working... Safari, iPhoto, etc. No external hard drives will mount, so I don't have any way to back up my photos, or anything else on the computer. I had just bought an external firewire drive to use with Time Machine, but hadn't gotten it set up yet, so nothing is backed up... (read: I'm an idiot). I can't access the Mac HD either.
Is there a repair utility for the desktop and/or finder?
I can view my photos, but the computer says nothing that can burn a disk is attached... including the internal combo drive. Is there some other way to get the data off of the computer so I can re-install Leopard? Shared folder? Terminal mode?
Any help would be REALLY appreciated. All my kid's pics are on here, as well as my iTunes library, contacts, and about a gazillion documents I want to keep.

This is on an iMac G5 running Leopard by the way.

Lack of access to devices sounds like a permissions issue. You don't state what updates were applying when it crashed. Major update (10.5.2) or smaller ones? If it was 10.5.2, then get online with Safari and download the combo updater and reapply it (you stated Safari was still working).
You could also try booting to your Leopard disk and running Disk util from there. Repair permissions and the disk if you are able to. If that fails you can force a repair from single user mode, though Apple do not recommend this.
Try the above and post an update if you still need more help. None of the above should effect data on the machine. As with any update or repair operation though, you may experience issues.

    Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
    If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
    Settings>Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    Go back to Settings>Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.
    You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again.
    You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again.

  • Having CD data disc problems, can someone help?

    I have a power mac G4 dual 1.25 GHz running OS X 10.3.9. It has a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R1312.
    For about the last week or so I haven't been able to burn back-up data discs. They seem to be burning fine, but I get an error message during verifying, saying the disc could not be verified. If I then mount the disc, some of the files open, but most not.
    To complicate matters, I seem to be able to burn music Cd's just fine, as many as I need to. And I am able to burn one, sometimes two, data discs upon start-up in the morning, then any more fail to verify. Incidentally, the discs that fail to verify won't load at all, seeming to be ruined.
    Oh, by the way, I'm using Verbatim CD-Rs, I have tried others with no change (Maxell).
    Can someone help? Is there a firmware update for the Toshiba burner? I can't find one.
    I would appreciate any information greatly.

    It may well not be the burner, esp. if Audio CD's are OK.
    Dust on the lens can also cause quirky issues, so you may want to try a DVD lens cleaning disc.
    You may want to invest in TechToolPro4 or similar app, so you can check & repair your file system/directories as needed. It sounds more like a data corruption issue.
    At the very least, you can use Disc Utility to repair permissions & verify your HDD.

    this is the story so far.
    I use Garageband then iWeb to do some Podcasts. I send them to my own .Mac page and then to good old 'iTunes' and here is the problem.
    First, I am new to all of this, a 'beginner' lets remember that part.
    So, I have 2 Podcasts on iTunes, very simple ones for the moment all in Education, although they should all be in the 'Higher Education' section but they are not. Anyway I just want to add a new episode to one of them ( RPE 202. episode 2 ) but when I try to 'submit it to iTunes ( using iWeb, as you do ) when i get to the first page with the URL feed inserted already ( by iWeb ) I get that wonderful message stating that the 'Feed has already been submitted' Yes I know that, it's me. So can someone tell me please how to add a new episode to a Podcast already on iTunes please !!!
    It should be a lot more simple then this, but it is not ( In my mind anyway )
    Why don't Apple ( in iTunes ) just have a 'Tick box' asking you if you are just
    'updating or adding another episode' . You tick ( yes ) and then it lets you do what ever you are trying to do. If I am using the Software they suggest then why does it not work properly ? Why does iWeb give the same Feed to one that is used, why does it not add either another 'Letter or number' to let the system know ah I know that Feed, it wants to be added to 'that' Podcast.
    Sorry for the rant at the end but I am sure this could be made easier for us all.

    If the feed is already submitted, you don't have to do anything else. Add your podcast to iWeb, publish, and wait. iTunes will get the feed.
    I too publish a podcast. When I update the website, it is automatically (maybe a little delay) added to iTunes

    I have a huge problem with upgrading my iTunes to the new one.  Have been struggling with this for months with still no joy have tried everything suggested , the latest being to install a trial of the WinRAR archiver which seemed sucessful until just near the end - the upgrade could take place as it could not delete the old version of Bonjour64.msi. From my searches I cannot find it exists so I cannot delete it!
    PLease can someone out there advise me cos I'm getting close to throwing out my computer!!!

    Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

    To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
    Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another install. Does it go through this time?

    Today, my iBook started to act goofy. It would work about 5-10 minutes, then it would freeze up. I would restart it by using ctrlcmdpower. I would log in, and about 10 minutes later, the computer would freeze up again. I regularly ran disk utility. I tried reinstalling the operating system. That worked for a while until the computer froze. I ran hardware test, and my computer passed the test. Can anyone help me fix my computer? Thank you!

    I can not start my computer from the install disc that came with my computer as well as the Tiger install disc. The computer starts up normal, and then goes to a blue screen. Is it worth my investment to fix the iBook, or invest in a new MacBook?

  • Masking problems- can someone help?

    I'm trying to create a mask by copying and pasting an image I made in Illustrator. The times this has worked seemed erratic and random. Most of the time the image comes over and the mask is applied, but nothing is masked out. I took a screenshot of what's going on.

    The mask of the jellyfish is on, but the solid hasn't been masked out. It's just on top of the solid... I'm not sure why this is happening.

    First:
    Why are you doing this, rather than using the Create Shape Shapes From Vector layer feature? With that, you can import an Illustrator file and convert it to vector graphics shape layers in After Effects. This is almost always much better than using masks on solids, which is the old way from before we had vector graphics shape layers.
    Second:
    Don't just paste onto the solid like that. Copy the shape in Illustrator. Create a mask on the solid with the Pen tool in After Effects; just clicking once to draw a single point is adequate. With the mask path property selected (it should actually already be selected because you just created it), paste. This puts the path from the Illustrator layer into the right place with the right properties already set.

    The problem is that when I try to add for example 3 Jbuttons to JApplet I can only see the 3 one(the last one which i added last). Do you know how can i fix the problem.
    I am using BorderLayout(2,2). If i don you any of these just default layout, than i have no problem. I can see two buttons. With the BorderLayout definded in the right under class name. I am getting BIG button and only one no 3 like i wanted. WHy i can not have 3 or more buttons with BorderLayout. Any idea??

    If your code does something like the following, you'll get one big button called Three. The other's are there, but they're behind the third button because they've all been added in the same place.
    JPanel p = new JPanel();
    p.setLayout(new BorderLayout(2,2));
    p.add(new Button("One"));
    p.add(new Button("Two"));
    p.add(new Button("Three"));
    BorderLayout uses constants to let you tell it whereabouts you want the component to go; these constants are things like BorderLayout.NORTH, BorderLayout.CENTER, etc.
    You need to do the following:
    JPanel p = new JPanel();
    p.setLayout(new BorderLayout(2,2));
    p.add(new Button("One"), BorderLayout.NORTH);
    p.add(new Button("Two"), BorderLayout.CENTER);
    p.add(new Button("Three"), BorderLayout.SOUTH);
    If you don't include the second parameter, it assumes you mean center - that's why all three buttons were going into the same place before.

    I was given notification to upload the latest version of itunes recently, so I clicked installed. However it has since corrupted my itunes and I get the error message:
    "This application has failed to start because MSVCR80.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem".
    In poor timing, I have also accidently damaged my phone and have a new one to restore it to an old back up.
    It is because of this I am reluctant to completely delete itunes off my computer and start again for fear of losing my back ups.

    Hey I finally got an older vesion of itunes to work!!! 10.7  x64 for windows 7
    After uninstalling all apple products even  quicktime
    I had to delete everything from (program files, and program  files x64, program data,)
    And all downloads from apple, and I went in to search deleted  other stuff from apple, and itunes
    But definently not my itunes library and Playlist
    Down loaded 10.7 x64 for windows 7, but checked (do not start  when done)
    Then I emptied my recycling bin and restarted my  PC
    I ran geek tech tool box same as reg cure pro, also PC Tools  registry cleaner, and CC Cleaner
    Then I emptied my recycling bin and restarted my  PC
    And wallah... It finally works, and I Love the older version  anyways.
    Easier to download and transfer  music!!!!!

  • My iMovie is not working, it tells me there's a problem but does not know the problem, Can someone help me figure this out please?

    A couple of days ago, my I opened up my iMovie and it just goes into the blank screen. I am able to click on things like, "import" or "create" and it will take me into the next window, but when I choose an option, I receive a message that there is a problem, but they don't know what the problem is. It has been like this for the past couple of days. I have deleted and re-downloaded the app about 3 times and it still comes out the same. Please assist in any way possible!

    Try a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
    When it's rebooted you can force a backup via Settings > iCLoud

  • Command Key Problems - can someone help?

    Apple Wireless Keyboard: Command Key on right side does not work the same as the left command key. In CS4 Illustrator and Photoshop, I can't command ( - ) or (=) for zooming, but I can do so with left command key. These commands have now changed to the pen tool commands "add point" and "delete point". Not sure how this change happened, but I'm so bummed cuz I've used these commands for years, so not sure why they don't work anymore. They're my go-to commands! Also command 0 doesn't work on right side; only on left side. Another go to command (view - fit all).
    I've scoured the web and posts for answers, but haven't found anyone with my specific problem of one command key working different from the other.
    I've reset PRAM & SMC three times, removed and re-added in Bluetooth, along with trying a whole bunch of other suggestions.
    The final solutions I can see is either getting used to stretching my fingers aukwardly across the keyboard to get my commands done, or get a new keyboard.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Nevermind. After hours of scouring... I figured it out. My **** command key doesn't work! Ahhhhh... It's like losing your keys then you find them in your pocket!
    This keyboard was doomed from the start. The R button has caused me many backspaces and editing!

    Update to OS X 10.6.8, then download and install Xcode 3.2.6.

  • Have a problem, can someone help

    After googling for hours and trying unsuccessfully to contact Dell (their chat reps were useless) and Creative (will explain in this post) I am still at a dead end on getting a solution to my issue.
    I had to reformat my PC (running Vista 32bit) and when I went to reinstall all my drivers and whatnot, it asked me for an activation code. I don't have the sleeve that the disc came in (that came with my Dell Laptop).
    Dell told me to contact Creative, and I was gonna do that through the customer service email tech support thing, but it's asking me for a model # or something and I don't have the information. If I had access to THAT, I'd have access to my activation key as they're on the same label I think.
    Anyway, I can't record audio from my soundcard until I get this fixed, and I refuse to pay for software I already own just to get a key.
    Anyone else having this issue and is there any hope of Creative being generous and giving me another activation key or are they gonna tell me to stick it and, as Joe said in Reservoir Dogs, "cough up the bucks ya cheap b*stard"?Message Edited by jazzysoul2007 on 08-29-200708:2 PM

    It's hard for Customer Support to assist you if they have no idea which product you have in the first place. What I can suggest to you is at least identify the exact product name with Dell first since it's bundled with it. With this information, you can then check with Customer Support for assistance. If you know the product name and it doesn't have any model number/serial number, just key in some random number in the e-mail support request form but make sure you explain yourself in details under the 'Description' column.
    I suspect you have the Sound Blaster Audigy Advanced MB since you mention laptop and activation code.
