Big problem with plain blue screen on boot (not related to Leopard install)

Hi - eventually I have worked out how to post to this forum!
I have had a major disaster with my iMac this weekend. It began with a lock-up when I was working happily away in Blender. I got a beachball and the machine froze. I had ssh set up so I tried to go in from my iBook to kill a few processes to try to get it back on track, but without success, so eventually I had to hold down the power button to power off the machine.
When I tried to reboot, I got the grey screen and the spinning wheel, then a plain blue screen with no mouse, no beachball and the machine just seemed to stop. I could hear the CPU going like the clappers and was able to ssh in again and check top to see what was going on, and the WindowServer(?) process was maxed out at 100%. I wasn't able to kill it and again nothing happened and on a further reboot I just had a plain blue screen.
I have since spent a few hours trying various things to sort this out, so far to no avail.
- Single User mode, fsck -fy: reports everything fine, no change
- Reset PRAM, no change
- Tried booting off my backup Firewire drive (SuperDuper) but it won't boot to it, same blue screen hang
- Ran Disk Utility from Leopard Install DVD - permissions, checked disk, etc - no change
- Ran DiskWarrior in Target Disk mode from iBook, no change
- Ran Tech Tool Deluxe, no change
- Removed RAM (not third party), put it back in, no change
- Reinstalled Leopard using Archive & Install, no change
- Reinstalled Leopard again, using Erase & Install, no change
- I think I'm running out of options.
I'd have been on the phone to Apple by now but it's Sunday tomorrow and a Bank Holiday in the UK tomorrow so it will be Tuesday at the earliest, and I know I'm going to be frustrated by having to go through all this with them again!
A weird thing is - I CAN get logged in in Safe Mode now and again, and when I do, the mouse pointer has a small, almost transparent rectangular graphic attached that follows the pointer around. Barely perceptible but it's there - it looks like a Leopard icon for a txt file but barely visible. Has anyone ever seen anything like this?? It really feels like something has corrupted, but with a totally clean OS install, is that possible?
As it stands, I'm sure this is a hardware issue but I'm not sure. I had a couple of power outages lately which I suspect are behind this.
I'd be really grateful for anyone's thoughts on this - it's been a really frustrating couple of days.
Cheers.

As far as I can see, resetting the power manager on this model of iMac involves resetting the SMC, which is unplugging all cables for 15 seconds, plugging back in and powering up. Tried that too, same result. In terms of third party software, nothing. Clean Leopard install is the lot.

  • Just ran a recent update, and computer woke up with plain blue screen and spinning beach ball, was it the update that made the computer crash?

just ran a recent update for my macbook pro/mid 2010, and the computer just woke up with a plain blue screen & spinning beach ball - I had to do a hard shut down.
I am also having the problem of having my screen going black for a couple of seconds, I read up on it in Support.  But I was wondering if there is something else going on.
    Any ideas?

  • White Macbook has delayed start with a blue screen and will not wake when it goes to sleep

I have a late 2006 MacBook that I recently bought used.  When I got it I was experiencing very long boot times.  It would have the apple logo then go into a blue screen for about 5 minutes before loading to the OS.  Nothing I did fixed the issue.  I was told it was not a hdd or ram issue, but maybe a logic board issue.  I then purchased a new hdd since that was the concensus online.  After installing it I got the it to load right away when it booted from the install disc.  However, after the OS was installed, it gave me the same problem.  Also, when trying to update to Lion it would freeze on the apple logo with the spinning dots.  I did not try to install Lion on the new hdd as I wanted to use the machine and it was working with minor inconviences.  I then read about resetting the system by taking off battery, holding power for ten seconds, then replacing battery and restarting.  This actually fixed the problem.  I was able to install Lion and everything was working perfectly.  I then replaced the topcase becuase the one on the computer was scratched and dirty.  After I did that I was unable to load anything.  It would not go into lion or anything else.  I fiddled with the command lines and nothing.  I had someone else who spoke unix fiddle with it and I was finally able to get it to boot from the install disc.  After doing a clean install, from erasing and creating a new partition, I am back to square one with a long boot time and not waking from sleep.  This time the battery trick is not working.  I have done the PRAM reset and disc repair and permission repair.  All to no avail.  I know that it has the capacity to work because it did.  Please help me, I really want this to work.  Thanks.

It seems thst the MBP is not recognizing the internal HDD.  Look at this link and probably the section 'Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility' will be applicable:

  • Black screen on boot, not upgraded to Leopard

i have a macbook pro that has failed to work. The screen stays black when i boot up and doesn't seem to want to come back on. I booted it up with the "T" key to transfer files over to another computer and i can see the firewire logo moving around the screen fine. So i think the screen is fine as far as it is showing something. It does make a strange sound on boot as well, almost like a cd is trying to eject although there is no CD in the machine. Any ideas?

  • Big problems with Matrix and Screen Painter

    Hi all !!!
I have a terrible time with my matrix in screen painter. I looked over all the samples in SDK and tried different things. The closest i got to make it work is when my form loads, i can click in each on my cells on the first row of the matrix but when i enter data if i click on another cell i lose the data. My form is fairly simple. I got 4 fields as regular data and a matrix with 8 columns. Can someone help me with this !!!  Maybe one of you have an complete example for entering manually data in cells and then save it. I'm using a UDT (not UDO) table and using .net ...
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Alain
It's not necaserry to delete the matrix. Leave it there. Then access your matrix with the following code
    Dim oMatrix As SAPbouiCOM.Matrix
    Dim oColumn As SAPbouiCOM.Column
    Dim oColumns As SAPbouiCOM.Columns
    oMatrix = SBO_Application.Forms.Item("FormID").Items.Item("MatrixID").Specific
    oColumns = oMatrix.Columns
    oMatrix.Clear()
    then create datasource and bind
    oForm.DataSources.UserDataSources.Add("DataID", SAPbouiCOM.BoDataType.dt_SHORT_TEXT, 20)
    oColumn = oColumns.Item("ColID")
    oColumn.DataBind.SetBound(True, "", "DataID")
    Hope this helps

at least that the operator has confirmed to me that he called me. I also have problems with either the start of the mac with the power off. I can not understand if it crashes or is just very very slow.
Finally, I have a problem with the external hard disck. I often said to have been ejected incorrectly (not true) and I start to restore the startup recovery disk because disk utility is ineffective from the normal operating system .. is a shocking thing, but how you reduced. in four years it had never happened. seem to have windows or worse. Wake up.
I am an Italian, alas, and then I would like an answer to my language because my € are the same as German French or English.

You are on Windows 2000, you do not have a "Firefox" button, and should consider yourself to be fortunate in that you still have menus and don't have to do anything to get the menus back instead of the "Firefox" button. (The same applies to Windows XP users).
Use the "File" menu to get to Import. You are not on Windows 7 or Vista, and don't have to put up with the nonsense added for Aero.
If you want the "Firefox" button you can get it with View -> toolbars -> (uncheck) Menu Bar. The menu bar and the "Firefox" button were supposed to be mutually exclusive (which is impossible in some cases without being incompatible).
Once you are using the "Firefox" button ...
Use the "Alt" key to view the menu bar (temporarily) containing File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, and Help. On Windows 7 and Vista, the menu bar was hidden by default in Firefox 4 and above. These menu items are more or less available under the "Firefox" button which has the most used of the built-in Firefox menu items available in a different format.
To get back to having menus again. "Firefox" button -> Options (second column) -> (check) Menu Bar
You can make '''Firefox 7.0.1''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. got big problem with my iphone4 , its not charging as it did before i updated (5.0.1) Now its charging very slowly and it doesnt show the charging sign on screen..

How do you know its charging very very slowly? Is the screen back on?
Once a month you should charge your phone to 100% then drain it, then charge it back up to 100%.
Just leave the phone in and do what is said above.
How long do you think it will take to charge to 100%?

  • Blue screen, computer will not boot up

My computer, when powered up gets stuck on a blue screen and will not boot up. I have restarted & held down the shift button for safe mode & it goes to a white screen with a grey apple icon but will not move past this screen. How do I get the computer to boot up?

Sounds like your system is hosed. Try [repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417]. Of course, from the sounds of it, even if you get the drive repaired, it may not fix the problems with your system.
Do you have backups? If not, your only priority at the moment should be to figure out how to back up your data, or what data may still be intact if your drive is badly damaged. If you have another Mac, the easiest way to do this will be to boot the machine into [FireWire target mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661] and copy whatever data you can.

btw. i created new user, and everything is working ok.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Big Problem with Mighty Mouse

I'm having a rather big problem with my wired Mighty Mouse. Basically, the middle button is the only top button that works, and clicking with the left or right side does nothing but activate the middle button instead.
    Here's the nitty gritty...
The reason I can assume this happening is because I cleaned the scroll wheel to un-stick it. I did this by getting a sheet of white paper, turning the mouse upside down, and rubbing the wheel all over the paper, which left paths of dirt and fluff everywhere. Worked great, and the scroll wheel now works perfectly again.
The mouse worked fine after that which is what makes this problem odd, but later that night, all the top buttons just started acting as one middle button... So, (using my tablet) I changed the setting for the middle mouse button in the preferences to 'Primary Button'.
Now basically what I have is a one button mouse (with side squeezy things).
How do I make the left and right buttons work again? The preferences are set up fine... as in the right side is assigned to 'Secondary Button', etc, but it still only works as middle mouse.
Any ideas or help would be really appreciated!
    Cheers
    Cuby

If you are going to replace it, consider getting a plain old optical mouse that uses Apple's built-in generic USB mouse driver. I like the ones from Microsoft that have two buttons, a clickable scroll wheels, and that's it. This is the one that I use now.
    [Microsoft Optical Mouse (Blue)|http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-K81-00004-Optical-Mouse-Blue/dp/B000068M P2/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1244701238&sr=8-1]
It is reliable, comfortable, and sturdy. I've never cleaned it. And it's so cheap. I had a different basic Microsoft mouse before, and the only reason I got a new one was because I wore out the pads on the bottom that let it slide around.
Tip: Apple's generic USB mouse driver does not seem to have way to set the center button click. But if you set it to something when the Mighty Mouse is connected, that setting seems to continue to work with the generic mouse. Mine is set to do Exposé.
Not sure why you cannot do +reset PRAM+. If your internal speaker volume setting is muted so that you do not hear the startup sound, you need to turn up the volume a bit. The startup sound is your indicator (when you hear it for the second time) that you can let go of then four keys.

  • Big problem with playing videos on Vista

I have a big problem with iTunes and Quick Time on Vista. I know other people in the german cmmunity who have it, too.
If ich want to play a video with iTunes or Quickt Time my PC starts wokring very heavy. Then the programm shut down. Sometimes there is a bluescreen, too.
In iTunes it is enough just to leftclick on a video an the programm is freezing without an error message.
I bought a new iPod classic some days ago. With this error i can't use it and 350 € would be thrown away.
I installed both prgramms again and again but that's no use.

Seems to be a hard drive issue. I sometimes get the blue screen of death or a message that one of my 2 raid0 hard drives is starting to fall down. If I restart the PC (3 seconds on the power button... since iTunes blocked everything) and declare the hard drive is OK using the Intel Matrix soft provided by Dell on their website, everything is back to normal (as long as I don't use iTunes). Problem only occurs with iTunes. I am currently doing a backup of my complete HDD to an external drive. I'll try moving my iTunes library to this drive and see if it works better from a non raid 0 drive. Will keep you informed. But an external drive is always VERY slow compared to an internal so it can only be a degraded mode solution to the problem. Apple please do something!!!

  • Blue screen when booting Win7 on new board

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum, and I'm hoping I'm posting this in the right section.
I recently built a new system. The parts are as follows:
    OS
Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium
    Mainboard
    MSI 970A-G45 AMD 970 Socket AM3+ Motherboard
    RAM
    Patriot 8GB Divison 2 DDR3 1600MHz CL9 (2x4GB)
    Video
GIGABYTE GeForce GT 220 DDR3-1GB, HDMI OC
    CPU
    AMD FX-6100 X6 3300MHZ 14MB 95W AM3+
I put the system together, and tried installing Windows as normal. Boot from dvd, create a partition, format, install. It would get as far as one of the last restarts and go to a black screen saying "Starting Windows" and remain there for over an hour before I gave up and restarted.
I then tried installing drivers from the mainboard cd, but there were none that pertained to my system (weird I thought, because the cd came with the mainboard should have some relevant drivers). according to Windows.
I then tried a few different reinstalls with partitions of different sizes and still Windows would hang.
I took out everything but one stick of ram(which I left in dimm slot one) and the video card (since the board has no integrated video).
It would still hang. So I decided to try the BIOS and disable some options that I had read about online from people with similiar problems (and different parts). I went to set the board's SATA mode to compatible, but it only had Disabled, IDE, AHCI, or RAID. I tried each (except disabled). I could get farther with AHCI, actually back to the "Completing Installation" and progress bar, but it would still hang. I then tried turning off USB controller with no luck, disabling usb legacy support with no luck, and finally disabling USB 3.0. That let me get further. I finally tried the different modes. I tried ECO mode with no luck (skipped Standard mode since I had been trying it) and finally tried OC Genie II mode. Windows installed then.
I put it back on Standard mode and it wouldn't load. It would either reboot randomly, hand forever, or give me a blue screen relating to a "secondary core that was not responding." It will start windows only in OC Genie II mode, with USB 3.0 disabled and the SATA set to AHCI.
Does this sound like a bad CPU, board, ram issue, BIOS, or what?
The only blue screens I got were related to a secondary core not responding. It would only do this with SATA set to RAID or USB 3.0 turned on from what I can remember. The PC is at home, and I am currently at work. If there is any information I can provide to help diagnose my troubles let me know and I'll get it  once I am home.
I mainly want to know if it sounds like I have a bad part and why it has to be in the OC Genie II mode with USB turned off and AHCI on.

    Hello!
Lately Patriot seems to be more successful with their selling than with their information campaign. Increase memory voltage to at least 1,65 volts.
I always recommend as simple a system as possible when installing Windows, makes possible troubleshooting much easier. In the simplest terms, one of each component/device and no extra cards or USB devices.
We would also like to know name and model of the PSU.
