Bilingual English/French Keyboard...

Greetings from Montreal, Canada!
I am wondering if there is a way to get my MacBook with a bilingual Eglish/French keyboard as I am required to type in both languages.
If not an option, how am I supposed to type in French with accents etc?
The option for a French Canadian keyboard will make it French only along with all software components in French as well.
Most computer companies in Montreal offer bilingual keyboards...if anyone has any help it would be greatly appreciated!

Bonjour,
I had the same issue as I live in France.. I need to work in English but communicate on a personal level in French. The accents are a bit of a pain on my MacBook International English keyboard, so I just bought myself a French wireless keyboard, and use that when typing in French.

  • [HELP] rc.conf configuration - English System, with French keyboard

    Hi
    I just finished the first part of the Arch installation.
    I'm a french user, and I want to do something different than the last installation
    I would use my system (TTY, Desktop environment in ENGLISH) but I want use my french keyboard (Azerty).
    Also, I have some files (music, movie) who contains special caracters like "é,ç,è" and I would be able to play theses files using VLC, Sonata...
    I've looked the wiki, and i'm curently configuring my rc.conf but I don't know what put in.
    LOCALE="en_US.utf8"
    HARDWARECLOCK="localtime"
    USEDIRECTISA="no"
    TIMEZONE="US/Eastern"
    KEYMAP="us"
    CONSOLEFONT=
    CONSOLEMAP=
    USECOLOR="yes"
    Can you help me ? Gives me the right thing to add my rc.conf please ?
    Does the lines CONSOLEFONT, LOCALE, & CONSOLEMAP depend on my keyboard configuration ?
    Also need help to configure the locale.gen file
    Sorry for my english, I don't speak english well :S

    I use the same setup, and I found the archlinux.fr wiki to be really helpful.
    I have those set in rc. conf :
    KEYMAP="fr-latin9"
    CONSOLEFONT="lat9w-16"
    Then just read through those two pages, they contain everything you need. Just skip the parts about setting the french locale and such.

  • How to use French keyboard with FCP English Shortcut

    Hi,
    I have a new MAC PRO and im using FCP, the shortcut wont work
    when my keyboard is French keyboard. I always need to change it back to english
    to be able to use them. Since im always writing in french, it became a pain to switch it 20-30 times per days
    On my last mac I didnt have that problem, I tried looking for some setting in FCP
    but I can't find any.
    Does anybody know how to make this work ?
    Thanks !

    Remapping is where you set keys on your keyboard to perform specific functions that aren't otherwise set to keys. Once you change your keyboard to French, you lose some of the pre-mapping capabilities. Go into Tools/Keyboard Viewer, and you can map from there. If it's confusing, look it up in the manual. It's clearly outlined for you.
    Bonne chance!

  • Yosemite kill french keyboard and switch to english

    Hi,
    I am on Yosemite system.
    The keyboard is switched to english each time I switch off and on my imac ( 2011). I generally see it when trying to surf and I can't enter some of my passwords because of the qwerty keyboard.
    So basically when I go to the preferences and then to keyboard options,  french keyboard disappeared and I have to manually add it again each time I am opening my imac.
    As I am french it's highly annoying to have to change each time this way.
    It was working perfectly before updating to yosemite.
    Any idea to fix this ?
    All the best for this new year starting :-).

    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
    Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
    Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
    If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
    Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

  • Can a French keyboard be switched to English

    Can a MacBook Air with a French keyboard be switched to an English keyboard?

    Unfortunately, switching either the keyboard or the language (Settings>General>International>Language) to French has no effect on the content of the generic dictionary that you reach by double-tapping a word in, for example, iBooks, Safari or the email.  Oddly, though, if you change the language to French and the dictionary does not find a definition of a word you tap, the panel that offers you Wikipedia or Google is in French.  Is it possible that people in France are stuck with an English-language dictionary, even as the iPad2 itself is using French?

    Alvanh - I had similar problems with a German keyboard. Try installing the script called Keyed Up. This will let you change shortcuts at will, and should allow you to find replacements on a French keyboard that work. It can be found here:

    Or are you on CC? This script might not work on CC...

    when i first time turn on my new macbook air i wrote my new passport. i wrote on qwerty keyboard but when i changed langues on french, i need writing everytime on "imagine french keyboard" but when i changed again langues ENGLISH this stay same...
    in my pasport is letter " m" but if i writing i need push " .etc... where i can change this?
    thx

    Yes. The external drive containing the files should also be attached to your computer, of course. As you are new to Mac the external volumes , when mounted will show up as an icon on the Desktop on the right hand side (under the Macintosh HD icon). You can double click that and a Finder window will open for you to browse the files contained. Leave that open to one side and have iTunes open just beside it. You can now drag the files from the external and drop them onto the Device of your choice as it appears in the iTunes side bar. The Device name (for example "So & so's iPod" will get a blueish window around it; a small green circle with a "+" sign will appear letting you know that all operation can be completed. Drop away! The files will go to the correct categorization in the iPod: audio to songs; videos to movies; podcasts to podcasts and so on.
    Go ahead and give it a try.

  • Mail Syntax on Yosemite French Keyboard

    Hi,
    Which is the right hyphen ?
    On Mavericks, i set Mail so that i could send emails from different accounts using keyboard shortcuts. And that worked fine.
    On Yosemite, the syntax has changed. My problem is I don't know how to type the corresponding dash with my French keyboard.
    Any suggestion?
    Note (in case the above mentioned isn't clear)
    I created my Mail KBSs the following way:
    1. System Preferences > keyboard > shortcuts > application's shortcuts > Mail
    2. I selected Mail and typed my name, a dash and my email address. For example, my name being Hercule Poirot, I typed:
    Hercule Poirot – [email protected] (with KBC: ctrl-alt-cmd-P)
    I tried all the dashes I could possibly find (even all those in "Edition > Special Characters"), but no success, the KBS I set for my different Mail accounts don't even show up in Mail when trying to compose an email. I've been trying for weeks, shut down Mail, shut down my computer and so forth.
    On the US keyboard, I've read "option-~" generates the right dash. But not on the AZERTY Fench one.

    Found the solution (myself eventually).
    Here it is in French, sorry.
    Pour appliquer le BON tiret:
    1. System Preferences > keyboard > shortcuts > application's shortcuts > Mail
    2. Juste AVANT de placer le tiret, basculer votre en clavier en "English (U.S.)"
    3. Pressez ALT-)  (ALT et Parenthèse fermée)
    4. Revenez au clavier français
    5. Ouvrez Mail et... YOU'RE GOOD TO GO , les raccourcis sont de retour.

  • Missing US english Qwerty Keyboard Layout?

    Hello,
    in the Systeme Preferences > Language & Text > Input Sources, I have a lot of exotic, and definitly nice, keyboard layout, but there is no basic US english QWERTY keyboard layout.
    The closest would be "british" or "canadian english" but I want us qwerty for programming so I am not sure they are convenient...
    So here's my question: where can I download "ready-made" keyboard layout for OSX and where to install them afterwards?
    Thanks a lot for your replies!

    Tom Gewecke wrote:
    I have never heard of an OS X install that did not include "US" in that list.  Are you sure it is missing, have you scrolled all the way down?
    So do I! It why I am really surprised...
    Actually the mac is a refurbished one coming from Nederland (and with a french keyboard...)
    Here's some screenshots:
    beginning of the list :
    search for qwerty layout (the hidden one down the list is Uyghur) :
    Searching for us is empty!
    I will search on the install key and with your softwares.
    Thanks for the references!

  • Can I physically replace a 12" iBook G3 french keyboard to a 14" G4 iBook?

    Hi,
    I have a dead 12" G3 iBook with a french keyboard (600MHz, late 2001). I would like to transfer the G3 keyboard to a G4 iBook (1.42GHz, 14" screen) that have an english keyboard. Both keyboards are the same dimensions. Can I just switch the keyboard from the G3 to the G4?

    Unfortunately, I don't think so. I checked with PowerBook Medic, and it appears that if you want to order a keyboard, you have to specify if it is for a G3 or a G4 and if it is for a 12" or a 14". They may look the same on the top, but I think the cabling may be different underneath. It shouldn't be too difficult to look and see.
    Good luck!

  • Swing + french keyboard input.

    I have a java swing application running on a custom debian kernel with java 1.5.
    How do I allow user to input from a french keyboard for eg.
    I do know that Resource bundle is available,but that is for displaying non-english messages.
    However, when user is using a french keyboard, what is needed from java side to accept and
    process it. Is there any parameters, that i can provide while starting the java application ?
