Bin folder on Desktop - Where does it belong?

While moving and transfering files from another computer, somehow a "bin" folder ended up on the Desktop. When I open it, "Kind" shows it to be a Unix Executable File. None of the 37 files gives a hint as to any special folder that it might belong to. Some of the files are named: bash, cat, chmod, cp, domainname, echo, kill, etc. What has happened? What do I do with it? How can I find out what it belongs to?

Neil, I am not sure I understand. If, under Devices, I click on Macintosh HD, it shows a bin folder which is grayed out. Opening this shows the same files as the bin folder on the Desktop. Should the bin folder in the Macintosh HD be grayed out? Should I move the one on the Desktop into the Macintosh HD? If I delete the one on the Desktop (which is not grayed out), will it also take the grayed out file away from the Macintosh HD? I don't want to do anything that will cause a problem.
Thanks

  • ClearOnAppStop - where does it belong? Application.xml

    I see the documentation about using clearOnAppStop, but its not clear what file its supposed to be put into!?
    Does it belong in Application.xml?  Event.xml?  httpd.conf?  main.asc?  In the HTML of the player?????
    Sorry, I'm far from an expert on all of this stuff.  I have been able to successfully publish multibitrate HDS and HLS, but I'd like the stream files to go away.
    Update: I added the recommended configuration to the Application.xml file:
    <Application>
        <ScriptEngine>
            <ApplicationObject>
                <config>
                    <clearOnAppStop>true</clearOnAppStop>
                </config>
            </ApplicationObject>
        </ScriptEngine>
    </Application>
    After 600 seconds of inactivity, the stream files, and the directory they were in, were removed.  I found helpful info about this here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/755484
    Also, I'm assuming that this setting has no affect on the livepkgr/events/_definst_/<event>/*.stream files?
    Is there a way to clean up the events?  I'm creating a unique event and stream names for each event, and when the event is over, it will never be used again.
    Update: I still haven't found an automatic way to remove the event files.
    Thanks!

    clearOnAppStop is not something which AMS server does it for you. It is jus that the default livepkgr application that is shipped with AMS uses this flag to do cleanup, when the aplication stops.
    It is just that, AMS allows scripts to acess configuration variables in Application.xml if specified under certain specific tags and hence the livepkgr tries to store one such variable in Application.xml...I would prefer top have this variable in Applicatios; own copy of applicatyion.xml rather than mentioning it it server's copy of Application.xml...It makes no sense in having this variable(specific to a given application) specified in Server level Application.xml.

  • Where does "everything" belong?

    After an Uninstall/Reinstall (which I probably mishandled,) some of my former presets are intact (actions, plugins, scripts,) and some are not (workspaces, keyboard shortcuts, tool presets, and others I've probably not thought to look for yet).
    Is there an Adobe document that details exactly where each customized item belongs? Between the applicaton folder, the root library, the user library, etc, I'm in over my head. I don't only want to put things back as I had them, I want to put them where they should have been in the first place.

    There's a nice Adobe page online that describes where all the various files are kept:

  • Where does "Library" directory location belong.

    Where does Library directory location belong.  Had to move things around and not sure it got back in the right place.. /Users/forister/Documents .. forister is the administrator and only user now after trying out profiles.
    Then I wanted to install something and it said to put it in this location, but it isn't working.  Did I screw it up?
    New Mac user.
    thanks.

    "~/Library" refers to a folder (directory) in your home folder, not in /System/ or elsewhere. (The tilde is UNIX shorthand for the current user's home folder.)
    You haven't said which version of OS X you are using but if it is Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or older, ~/Library should be visible in Finder views of your home folder (the one with the house icon). If you are using Lion, you won't see it there but you will see it from the "Go" menu if you hold down the option key when you click on that menu.
    Another way to get to the folder in Finder is to type Command + Shift + G, then type "~/Library/Services" (without the quotes) & press the Go button.
    As the Read Me for QuickFiles says, you may have to create the Services folder in ~/Library/ if it doesn't already exist. To do that, open ~/Library/ & type Command + Shift + N, then type "Services" to name the untitled folder, then press return.

  • [Mac][JS] Where does InDesign store last "Save As" folder path?

    Is this location accessible to scripting? I've looked around the preferences objects as well as the "Class" properties of the File and Folder objects without finding anything.
    Coming up empty-handed there, I looked through the filesystem for .plist files it might be using. It must be stored in some such place, because the location persists across sessions and survives a trashing of the InDesign Defaults file at ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 7.0/en_US/InDesign Defaults. It also seems to write the location to wherever it lives immediately upon a Save As rather than at application close. I've tried discovering the location with lsof but either can't catch it in the act or am missing which of the hundreds of files InDesign has open is the culprit.
    It does not appear to be in com.adobe.InDesign.plist or com.adobe.mediabrowser.plist. There is a path property (NSNavLastRootDirectory) stored in the former file but it's not the one.
    I hope I'm making this more complicated than it is and that it can be accessed in a DOM property somewhere. Does anyone know?
    Jeff

    So you're asking the wrong question. You dont' care "where does InDesign store it," you care "where can I get it?"
    Actually I'd like to set it as well as get it. I would like to integrate with InDesign's expected behavior as much as possible; it would be ideal if, the next time a user did a Save As, it defaulted to the location they had chosen when they ran my script. Little inconsistencies like that drive me batty. It's a small issue and quite likely not worth the time I'm spending on it, but at this point I'm so confused by how InDesign is maintaining these paths that I would like to understand for understanding's sake.
    The InDesign Saved Data cache file you pointed out does indeed contain a lot of paths, and these kinds of save, import and export locations appear to be among them. They jump around in the file a lot, though. If you have any experience parsing this file and can help me look for whatever markers it uses I would be grateful.
    While in my earlier tests I never saw any path property in com.adobe.InDesign.plist but NSNavLastRootDirectory, I have since sometimes seen NSNavLastCurrentDirectory:GetFile:0 and NSNavLastCurrentDirectory:PutFile:0, and these do hold what you would expect. However, all installed versions of InDesign read and write to this file without affecting each other's behavior in this regard. And I haven't been able to figure out yet when InDesign writes or reads the path to its cache file and when it uses the .plist file.
    Complicating things further, it looks to me like calling File.saveDialog() in CS5 brings up the folder in NSNavLastRootDirectory, regardless of what was last chosen during a Save As in the UI, while CS4 respected the last Save As. Using the value in NSNavLastRootDirectory via
    var startFolder = Folder(app.doScript("return (do shell script \"defaults read \" & \"com.adobe.InDesign\" & \" NSNavLastRootDirectory\")",ScriptLanguage.APPLESCRIPT_LANGUAGE))
    will at least allow me to prevent the user from landing in a restricted folder in CS5.

    Firefox saves downloads to wherever you specify. Check your settings in Tools > Options > General, Download section. If you have it set to "Always ask me where to save files", then only you know where they were saved.

  • When I transfer photos from my camera to my computer, where does the computer store them?

    When I transfer photos from my camera to my computer, where does the computer store them?

    Assuming you're using iPhoto 09 or later.
    By default the photos are stored in the iPhoto Library in your Pictures Folder.
    The iPhoto Library is a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. This is a simple protection from users inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
    Want to look inside?  Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
    Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things,, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
    As an FYI: There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    (Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
    You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
    For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
    Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
    b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • New Folder On Desktop

    Need some help with this:
    I want an Automator plug-in workflow that creates a new empty folder on my desktop titled with the current days date. So the new empty folder would be labeled 10-7-08
    When I was running Tiger I created an Automator plug-in that that did what I'm trying to do in Leopards version of Automator, and when I upgraded to Leopard last year the Automator plug-in I created in Tiger continued to work great until today when it said the workflow couldn't be found. So I thought, no big deal, I'll just create a new Automator workflow plug-in. I was right it was no big deal, very easy to do:
    In Automators Library I simply select *New Folder* and in the name space I dropped the variable *Today's Date* and under the Where dropdown I select Desktop. That's it, that's all I need. So I click the Run button, the workflow runs and in less than a second I have a new empty folder on my Desktop named with today's date. So I go to File > *Save As Plug-in > Save Plug-in for Finder* and name the plug-in workflow *New Dated Folder*.
    Here's where I need help, when right click or control click to access the the new workflow (usually on my desktop) *More > Automator > New Dated Folder* The workflow runs, it creates the folder with today's date, but instead of stopping the workflow continues to run and starts coping my Desktop folder inside the new new folder, and inside the copy of my desktop it does the same thing and inside that, the same thing, and it just continues to copy folders inside folders.
    I try to stop the workflow but clicking the stop sign button in the menu bar doesn't work so I have to force quit *Automator Runner*.
    Please advise, this workflow worked great in Tiger. How do I get it to NOT copy my Desktop folder? I'm not telling it to copy anything. It works perfectly directly from Automator just not as a Finder Plug-in
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Wow, that's the answer I was looking for, thank you!
    I had noticed that it was carrying my right click on the Desktop thru, but I couldn't figure out how to tell it not to do that. I looked all over in Automator I even tried right clicking in the workflow window to see if any contextual menus popped up. I had no idea it was hidden in the upper bar of the Action and in my frustration I didn't see the Action menu
    Thanks again you saved me from completely pulling out my hair.

  • Where does iWeb save the contents of my website now that iDisk is not available?

    With the latest change to iCloud and iDisk not available anymore, where does iWeb save the contents of websites?
    I looked for the files undel Library/Application Support/....but could not find the iWeb folder.
    Any ideas please?
    Thank you.

    In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
    To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
    do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
    You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
    Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
    WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Where does my exported document go?

    I am finding this very frustrating- please can someone help me?
    I opened a document in a folder I sent it to pages so I could make some changes then I exported it.
    When you export a document in pages where does it go?

    There is a shared folder on the ipad that you can see fromapps on the iPad, and from iTunes on the computer.
    You would add the file to this folder using iTunes. Then on the iPad, you import that file into the actual apps file list. This makes a copy in the sandboxed area for the app. A copy stays in two locations now. One original copy in the shared folder, one being edited in the app.
    If you mess up the edited file, you can delete it and reimport from the shared fielder.
    If you want to keep the changes on the iPad you can export back into the shared folder which you can then see on iTunes.
    Be careful, make sure that if your about to delete an app, you first sync and copy all files to the desktop before deleting it. I lost a bunch of files in numbers because it apparently deletes all files associated with the app.

  • Where does 3.0 save synched Notes on the computer?

    Where does 3.0 save synched Notes on the computer?
    thanks

    Solved now thanks to another discussion.
    Attempting to sync brought up a message 'Syncing Notes' but I couldn't find them.
    A terminal search revealed no sign of Notes.mbox in my ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes folder even after multiple sync attempts. I had a look to see if there was a Notes.imapmbox there as well, as IMAP mailboxes have a different suffix but that wasn't there either.
    The poster advised taking the following steps (first make sure that you have Sync notes checked in the Info tab of iTunes:
    1. eject the iPhone from iTunes and disconnect it from the USB port
    2. force quit iTunes using Command-Q
    3. switch off the iPhone completely
    4. reboot the iPhone
    5. re-connect the iPhone via the USB port
    6. allow the sync to take place
    I had my ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes folder open in a Finder window and shortly after the sync, up popped Notes.mbox. I still didn't see anything under Reminders in Mail but I selected Mailbox/Rebuild in Mail and now I have Notes available under Reminders. I have five active email accounts, each with a Notes folder available, but the one note I had left after losing all the originals during one of my sync attempts appears under On My Mac.
    To be honest, now I have got it working, I'm not sure how much use it is so I doubt if I will use it. I had thought that it would sync via Mobile Me and that there would be a desktop application to go with the iPhone one, or it would be integrated into iCal.
