after reading some of the forums on this error code i think i will have to buy a new hard drive. i was hoping if i got HP recovery kit i would be able to fix mine. i also got a error code 0xef0003. i tried to use the built in recovey but no luck. now all i have is a black screen that says  no bootable disk. so i have is a 2 part question.
1. if i buy a new hard drive will i need the recovery kit that HP offers? i dont have any back up disk.

Btheone, welcome to the forum.
You are correct that the hard drive failed.  The maximum hard drive supported by Win 7 is 2 GB.  Yes, you need the Recovery Discs provided by HP.
Here is a guide to help you Recover the system after you replace the hard drive.  Read it carefully before buying the new hard drive.

  • BIOHD-2 error code but starts anyway

    Hi!
I've refreshed my HP computer which was working alright with windows 7 before. Now I've installed windows 8.1 N and when Im trying to start up I get to the HP screen, if I try to diagnos the problem it says that I've got a BIOHD-2 error, but after exiting the diagnosis the computer starts up as normal. If I get to the set up-screen it also starts up as normal after I've saved and pressed exit.
I don't really trust the compuer even though it acts normal after it started. Any tips on what could be wrong and what I can do about it?
I really don't know much about computers.  Appreciate answers

I highly recommend that you save all important data (documents, photos etc. ) to an external storage device. ONce you have replaced the hard disk you can return the data to its place on your desktop PC.
BIOHD-2 is a diagnostic code that indicates imminent or pending failure of the hard disk. In order to resolve the error you will need to replace the hard disk with a new desktop SATA hard disk.

  • PC Doctor Error Code BIOHD-2

    HP Pavilion FK484AV-ABA, model m4900t running windows 7 64 bit. RAID-1 setup.
PC crashed. Cannot restart. On cold boot, received the error message that RAID-1 and both hard drives failed. Ran PC-Doctor and received the following diagnostics:
CPU, Memory, all hard drives OK.
    Boot Path Diagnostic
    Error Code:     BIOHD-2
    Warning:          No drives detected.
Suggestion:    Turn off system and verify the drive cables are securely attached.
Since PC-Doctor verified that both drives were OK, I am assuming that the cables also were OK. Any suggestions on what the problem may be??
Thanks in advance for your help.

Go into the BIOS to see if the drives are recognized. Post your results here.
That is an unusual condition for PC Doktor to report. Normally a BIOHD-2 error code means that a hard disk has failed, but I do doubt that both drives failed at once.

    Hi,
It would look like your Hard Drive has failed and will need to be replaced.
As your PC is still under warranty, you should contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.

My HP computer won't boot up.
When I run Diagnostic Tools on intial startup (F9)
I get and Error code "BIOHD-2" when it is testing Boot Path
    It says
    "Error Code : BIOHD-2"

I contacted HP support that they want me to pay $59.99 for a one time service fee to test the system!
I think that is rediculus. They won't even tell me what's wrong or what that error code is? I've had no problems with this computer at all since I bought it FRYs 6 years ago

    Hi,
As already mentioned, BIOHD-1 code means No communication and most of the time reseating the cable helps. I don't think this would damage the HDD.
    Good luck.

    Hi WayneB1,
You are correct that you will need to contact HP and get a set of recovery discs. Once you have those you will need to replace your hard drive. In Big_Dave's second post there is a link on how to replace a hard drive. The link below will help you order recovery discs.

  • Error Code BIOHD-2 During Hard Drive Test No Drives Detected

I am working on a HP Pavilion p6214y Desktop PC.
Just to list the specs for any unusual problems:
OS = Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
MB = HP P/N: 513430-002 with AMD Athlon II x4 620 Quad Core
    HD = Western Digital 1TB
    Power = 350W LiteOn
    Ram = 8G
I am getting a blue screen that shows 4 options and I chose F9 for diagnostics and it gave me error code BIOHD-2 when checking the hard drive. It said no hard drives were detected. I have read on this here and checked the bios and it does not find the hard drive. So most people then say it is a bad hard drive. Although, I put the drive into another computer and I can pull files up from the hard drive and view them. It finds the drive just fine in the bios. I also put a working hard drive from that other computer into this HP and it will not recognize a hard drive through the bios.  Since the mother board is not recognizing hard drives throught the sata ports I would assume a mother board failure. I then put in a bootable usb version of Ubuntu 12.10. It runs smoothly and will access the internet and everything. So, from my small amount of knowledge, that means that the mother board is still ok, right?  I do not believe that I have read anywhere that the motherboard can go bad only at the sata ports. Does anyone know if that is a possibility? Is there a chance that I could salvage the situation by purchasing a set of recovery disks for this specific model and just reinstalling everything? I have heard that they are usually $20 so that would be a cheap trial and error.
Also, it will make it to the recovery screen sometimes on the blue screen, but it won't do anything because the keyboard stops working at that point.
    Just another tech junkie.
    This question was solved.

    Hi:
If you are running the ubuntu from the usb flash drive and not the hard drive, then yes, there is a definite possibility the motherboard sata controller has failed.
I believe the motherboard in your model is notorious for sata controller failures as is evidenced in these many threads below.

  • HP pavillion Error Code: BIOHD-8

I have an HP pavillion p6000 desktop with windows 7 with an AMD Athlon II x4 635 processor. I recently downloaded C cleaner to clear up some space, and may have deleted something important. I went to reboot at a point, and my computer would get to the loading screen for windows, an then just reboot over and over. Running the startup repair did nothing, sat there for hours and hours. I accessed diagnostic tools in start up - it scanned my CPU and memory and they passed but the hardrive failed with these details :
    Error Code: BIOHD-8
Error: A SMART test failed on the drive.
How can I resolve this issue?

    Hi,
That's not a good news, the HDD is having big problem. Please do a HDD self test again:
    1. Restart the computer.
    2. Keep tapping the F10 key when the HP logo appears. This will take you to Bios Setup Utility.
    3. Select the Diagnostic tab.
    4. Select the "hard drive self test" option and press enter to perform the test.
Note: This test may take up to 40 minutes or more.
Pass - The hard drive is not damaged.
Fail - the hard drive is damaged and may need to be replaced.
    Regards.

  • Hp pavilion elite m9340 will not boot from hd or cd. i get error code biohd-3.

Like title says, box won't boot from HD nor from recovery disk, OS- Windows7. BIOS and system diagnostics recognize both drives. I opened the box and unplugged HD SATA cable and was able to boot it from recovery disk. It seems as though something is wrong with HD that won't let system boot correctly. Any help is greatly appreciated. Mike.

    Hi,
The error code that you are getting normally indicates a bad hard drive. Be sure that the power connector for the hard drive is on tight.  Plug the HD into a different SATA port and see if the same issue occurs. If it does, then you have a bad hard drive.  You might need to hit the ESC key at the HP splash screen to pick the boot device since you moved the cable if you get that far.
A new 3.5" SATA hard drive under 2 TB should work just fine.

Normally a BIOHD-8 error, means the hard drive has failed or is about to fail. Sometimes a bad motherboard may cause this error but most bets are on the hard drive.

    Hi,
BIOHD 8 is a failure of the short SMART test on the Hard Drive and would indicate the drive is failing and will need to be replaced.
